Some of the Fantasy Football Scout community around the globe were suffering from bleary eyes this week, as they looked to eek out an advantage from the early teamsheet announcements ahead of Gameweek 23. We look back on the barmy events from Tuesday night, along with recent discussions on replacement strikers in the light of Aguero’s hamstring twang, and the chatter on shedding the big-money stoppers and freshening up our defences with some budget buys. As always, we also reserve time to call in on the latest community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Sergio Aguero’s injury during City’s victory at Spurs left many Wildcard teams in tatters as the community hurriedly looked to assess alternative striking options. Christina in his Kunundrum post believes that, with a key Champions League clash with Barcelona and FA Cup tie with Chelsea on the horizon, Aguero looks unlikely to be risked for the forthcoming league outings with Norwich, Sunderland and Stoke. Team-mate, Edin Dzeko was among the options canvassed as a replacement, with Wild Demel, in particular, cheerleading for the Bosnian. Evs, meanwhile, was contemplating a dramatic points hit to bring in Robin van Persie and Jay Rodriguez for his crocked strike pairing of Aguero and Romelu Lukaku.

In the light of this debate, we enquired whether you considered van Persie’s £13.6m price-tag as less of an obstacle with Aguero off the scene.

While attacking options dominated our thinking, we also dedicated some quality time to sprucing up our defences. Intransigent2 asked whether expensive defenders really are worth their hefty price tag. Amongst the arguments presented, he put forward the theory that Laurent Koscielny and Bacary Sagna provided far greater value than their premium-priced colleague, Per Mertesacker.

On a similar theme, Dino argued that the woeful defensive away form of teams offering the high-roller defenders makes it unviable to invest in the likes of John Terry, Vincent Kompany and Per Mertesacker. He points to Arsenal’s record, with just three of their 11 clean sheets away from home, as a prime example of how they can fail us.

Reckoner led the charge to find a cheap replacements at the back. He suggested that the returning West Ham centre back Winston Reid has all the ingredients to warrant our attention. West Ham’s kind run of fixtures has to be a factor. The appropriately named Guy Demel’s Shaved Head offered a nuts and bolts guide to West Ham’s key assets. Reid also tops his shopping list, as does the midfield pair of Mark Noble and Kevin Nolan. Given the latter’s returns on Saturday, we should perhaps pay attention.

Gameweek 23’s deadline was unique in that we had a view on half the teamsheets. This presented some of our overseas community members with the tough task of having to stay awake or set the alarm for the 6:45pm GMT team sheet announcements. We surveyed those looking to hit the caffeine, with Torres Magic setting his alarm for 5:45am at his Sydney, Australia, home. Meanwhile, it was a late night for India-based Siva Mohan, as the teamsheets emerged at 12:15am his time.

The Community Tournaments

OliDooley was top following Gameweek 23 in In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league, with 20 managers knocked out and 206 now remaining. Triggerlips and Cheeseoid are in the lead in the “Millionaire Club”, where currently 160 live to fight on. Qubit (The Irregular) leads the “After Xmas League” and Unbelievable Tek-kers leads the seeding (49th overall) for both “FPL Open” and “Elite 64”, with Koneheads in hot pursuit. For more details about Torres Magic’s leagues click here.

Going into Gameweek 24, that chap Jonty managed the triple whammy of securing top spot in the FFS “Old Farts Club league”, the FFS Moderators and Contributors league and one of In Tommy We Trust’s All Things FPL Leagues. Other league leaders in Tommy’s competition are Evs, Bootsy, Billy Ketsu, Jambo16 and Koneheads.

Meanwhile, DonTheSpecial One continued to lead the “Puffinboy Memorial Cup”, named after one of this website’s first and much-missed community posters.

In the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, there has been little change, I’ve clung to the lead in the Fantasy Premier League part of the competition, while Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the competition’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues respectively.

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First – 2 Million + Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five game weeks, Teltzham Hotspurs continued in first place going into Gameweek 24 with an incredible rank of 12,195. Five teams are now in the top 100,000 places.

The FFS UEFA group are back with a new competition for the second half of the season, featuring the top managers from their European leagues, which ran during the first half of the season. Their Champions League-style tournament gets under way this weekend and features their FA Cup winner Ryan and last season’s Champions League victor MJ6987.

Also, a reminder that another popular competition organiser, The Long and Winding Road, begin their epic 128 player FA Cup (of Tea) in Gameweek 25. Among key clashes will be Doosra against Giggs Boson and Kings of Lyon versus The Tinkerman. The full fixture list can be found here.

Having an amazing few gameweeks. Closed a 90 point gap to my mini league rival, and risen from 200K to 70K.

But my season has been blocks of good and bad... Due one more green before the reds come back

    Speroni
    Baines - Ivanovic - Kolarov
    Hazard - Mata(VC) - Navas - Eriksen
    Suarez(C) - Sturridge - JRod
    1FT. 2.5m itb

Bench: Marshall; Mertesacker - Pozuelo - Hudson

Owning Baines has been frustrating. Shall I get him out with the FT. Thinking of Terry as replacement. Or shall I improve my bench strength? I can also a JRod > Benteke.

    Please suggest.

Have 2.5 in the bank. Cash not a problem. Need the points!

Can do Navas > Yaya this week. Or Baines > Terry / Cahill. Not sure which would return me more points in the long run. Maybe Terry with the way Chelsea is shaping up.

It's great having these players, but you have to have them when they're getting the points. Owning Coleman over the last few weeks hasn't returned any points for example.

Owning Yaya the whole way, getting Ramsey at the right time, captaining Suarez regularly are all essential to rank this year.
Giroud is grand but there have been better players to own at most stages this season.

Don't worry, I've got one right here:

                    Points per game per million

                    PPG
                    RVP: 6.3
                    Giroud: 5.4

                    6.3 divided by 13.6 is 0.45

                    5.4 divided by 8.9......is 0.71!

                    Giroud wins by a landslide.

And if you want points per minutes, here's that one:

                    RVP
                    81 divided by 1050 divided by 13.6: 0.006

                    Giroud
                    119 divided 1909 divided by 8.9 is.....0.007

even your own stats prove you wrong.

You're talking BS. It is a proven FACT that RVP is miles ahead of Giroud and the others on that list as a footballer. Saying otherwises tells me you know nothing about football.

Daft to think this year's RVP is the same as the one from yesteryears. Dude is 30. Doesn't score by himself anymore, and United are struggling to top it all off.

You mean RVP from 9 months ago? Yeah Man U are struggling and thats partly down to RVP not being FIT. Dude has missed 12 games and has come back and you're suprised people want him over the Donkey Giroud?

You do understand how averages work, right? If he can't get more than 6 per game in 13 games, why 11 more change that?

                      10.4 divided by 13.4....... is 0.77.

The model I used is weighted between last season and this season so my numbers are a little different than yours. I'll admit that just based on this season alone currently the numbers don't fall in my favor but its a smaller smaple due to RVP being out for so long.

agree on this. I would say that this year's United is so bad and RVP's age is finally affecting him, rendering this years stats the most important to me. I will totally agree that if you include last year's stats that Giroud can't come close.

But Giroud is a new player this year. And if youre honest, RVP is, too.

Wait I don't have a strong opinion on this.

RVP is essential unless you have other players capable of scoring nearly as well and can make up the points difference with the $ left over. So not really essential then

i m not bothered about whether rvp is overpriced or not seriously...in some period of the season u need him for the points where he have great fixture..and after that u have ur freedom to sell again as simple as that.

ppg just mean the consistency throughout the season but more impt is you need the correct players at the correct time. plus kun out for 1 mth means u top up 1m plus can get rvp...not tough to get him in.

as far as i noe RVP or even rooney is great for the coming fixtures thus i get him in..as easy as that

If you are certain that Yaya will outscore AJ then be my guest. Yes it was 7 but Yaya only got 1 goal and 9 pts. I reckon AJ could score bigger against a depleted Hull, but that's just a wild guess.

Removing any playing defender for a -4 hoping for a attacking return sounds wrong.

I would only consider taking a hit for defender only if
              a) Downgrading to get budget for upgrades upfront.
              b) Only 2 playing defenders and the replacement have good chances of CS.
              c) Got a 6th sense on which defender is going to score big

The other strikers are all inconsistent at his level. You have to be patient with the Bony's, Benteke's and Giroud's of this world. Patience is a virtue in this game.

Nice advice. But that is applicable mainly on nailed on players like the strikers you mentioned, cause the'll always have another go at goal. Not so much on Dzeko, Wellbeck, et al. imo since their opportunity is not always big.

    having 3 arsenal against

    pool and then MAN UTD.

-4 to get rid of their defender now for say, koscielny -> Kolarov is a sensible thing to do?

its for at least 2 gw,

with city favourable fixture, and arsenal worsen fixture ( bayern for CL in between as well )

talk me out of it please? thanks in advance

    GW26: Bony -> JRod/Lambert

    GW26: Bony -> Dzeko/JRod/Lambert

    C) GW25: Ozil -> Lallana

    Szczesny
    Terry, Kolarov, Clyne
