Some of the Fantasy Football Scout community around the globe were suffering from bleary eyes this week, as they looked to eek out an advantage from the early teamsheet announcements ahead of Gameweek 23. We look back on the barmy events from Tuesday night, along with recent discussions on replacement strikers in the light of Aguero’s hamstring twang, and the chatter on shedding the big-money stoppers and freshening up our defences with some budget buys. As always, we also reserve time to call in on the latest community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Sergio Aguero’s injury during City’s victory at Spurs left many Wildcard teams in tatters as the community hurriedly looked to assess alternative striking options. Christina in his Kunundrum post believes that, with a key Champions League clash with Barcelona and FA Cup tie with Chelsea on the horizon, Aguero looks unlikely to be risked for the forthcoming league outings with Norwich, Sunderland and Stoke. Team-mate, Edin Dzeko was among the options canvassed as a replacement, with Wild Demel, in particular, cheerleading for the Bosnian. Evs, meanwhile, was contemplating a dramatic points hit to bring in Robin van Persie and Jay Rodriguez for his crocked strike pairing of Aguero and Romelu Lukaku.

In the light of this debate, we enquired whether you considered van Persie’s £13.6m price-tag as less of an obstacle with Aguero off the scene.

While attacking options dominated our thinking, we also dedicated some quality time to sprucing up our defences. Intransigent2 asked whether expensive defenders really are worth their hefty price tag. Amongst the arguments presented, he put forward the theory that Laurent Koscielny and Bacary Sagna provided far greater value than their premium-priced colleague, Per Mertesacker.

On a similar theme, Dino argued that the woeful defensive away form of teams offering the high-roller defenders makes it unviable to invest in the likes of John Terry, Vincent Kompany and Per Mertesacker. He points to Arsenal’s record, with just three of their 11 clean sheets away from home, as a prime example of how they can fail us.

Reckoner led the charge to find a cheap replacements at the back. He suggested that the returning West Ham centre back Winston Reid has all the ingredients to warrant our attention. West Ham’s kind run of fixtures has to be a factor. The appropriately named Guy Demel’s Shaved Head offered a nuts and bolts guide to West Ham’s key assets. Reid also tops his shopping list, as does the midfield pair of Mark Noble and Kevin Nolan. Given the latter’s returns on Saturday, we should perhaps pay attention.

Gameweek 23’s deadline was unique in that we had a view on half the teamsheets. This presented some of our overseas community members with the tough task of having to stay awake or set the alarm for the 6:45pm GMT team sheet announcements. We surveyed those looking to hit the caffeine, with Torres Magic setting his alarm for 5:45am at his Sydney, Australia, home. Meanwhile, it was a late night for India-based Siva Mohan, as the teamsheets emerged at 12:15am his time.

The Community Tournaments

OliDooley was top following Gameweek 23 in In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league, with 20 managers knocked out and 206 now remaining. Triggerlips and Cheeseoid are in the lead in the “Millionaire Club”, where currently 160 live to fight on. Qubit (The Irregular) leads the “After Xmas League” and Unbelievable Tek-kers leads the seeding (49th overall) for both “FPL Open” and “Elite 64”, with Koneheads in hot pursuit. For more details about Torres Magic’s leagues click here.

Going into Gameweek 24, that chap Jonty managed the triple whammy of securing top spot in the FFS “Old Farts Club league”, the FFS Moderators and Contributors league and one of In Tommy We Trust’s All Things FPL Leagues. Other league leaders in Tommy’s competition are Evs, Bootsy, Billy Ketsu, Jambo16 and Koneheads.

Meanwhile, DonTheSpecial One continued to lead the “Puffinboy Memorial Cup”, named after one of this website’s first and much-missed community posters.

In the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, there has been little change, I’ve clung to the lead in the Fantasy Premier League part of the competition, while Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the competition’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues respectively.

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First – 2 Million + Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five game weeks, Teltzham Hotspurs continued in first place going into Gameweek 24 with an incredible rank of 12,195. Five teams are now in the top 100,000 places.

The FFS UEFA group are back with a new competition for the second half of the season, featuring the top managers from their European leagues, which ran during the first half of the season. Their Champions League-style tournament gets under way this weekend and features their FA Cup winner Ryan and last season’s Champions League victor MJ6987.

Also, a reminder that another popular competition organiser, The Long and Winding Road, begin their epic 128 player FA Cup (of Tea) in Gameweek 25. Among key clashes will be Doosra against Giggs Boson and Kings of Lyon versus The Tinkerman. The full fixture list can be found here.

I think people from the uk are just a bit ignorant in the fact they say they don't like the sport but the fact that they don't want to learn the sport but when you learn and understand the sport it is great and exciting and the adverts in the superbowl are usually amazing and you usually don't think of the breaks etc.

Oh I'm sure..but maybe the problem is that it's not part of our history or culture as such..and you can't really force that part. It's same problem that America has with ever becoming a major "soccer" nation. So much of sport as a spectacle revolves around all that.

stuck with same move. I want to take out ozil tonight to avoid price drop. thinking silva because i'm chasing in my mini league and no one in my league has silva. Down side is they ALL own yaya so I run the risk getting burned by them.

                Agree with that.

Still like the game though. Followed it from early 80s when it first came on C4.
All my mates at school picked a team to follow & we meet up for a little re-union every year to watch 5/6N, Superbowl & hit the beers. We're in our 40s now.

          Never won me over..

Way too much emphasis on one superstar to win the game, meanwhile other team roles include "being really wide and not letting anyone past you", "trying to get past the wide people to get at the superstar" and "can kick the ball really far". Once that job is done off you go, don't try and do anything flair outside your role. Its the equivalent of mass production, everyone has a specific simple role.

Also having 4 goes to get 10m seems like its trying to recreate the pointlessness of the Somme

            Everybody has a roll.
Much the same as defenders in football staying put and the strikers taking most of the glory.
Obviously defenders score the odd goal and wing backs attack a bit and wingers chip in with goals as well as assists.. but American footballers make plays from every position.
Interceptions, bit tackles and good coverage at vital times is as good to watch as a big attacking play from a QB.

The emphasis on one superstar is mostly media. Some teams have good quarterbacks but are perennially bad. The left "wide person" is, on average, the second highest paid player on the team.

                      Yep.
Would obviously prefer not to have had to do such major surgery…but most of the players coming in were people I was vacillating over with my WC anyway.

Got very unlucky - so a shame it cost hits but better than trying to patch it up while scoring zeroes over the next few weeks and then not being able to afford the players I wanted in the long run.

Anyway - I'll never be world number 1, but still chasing only a small lead in my £100 ML.

When it came time to choose a name for the contest, Hunt made history once again. Meeting to plan the inaugural game in the summer of 1966, Hunt and other football kingpins ironed out the details but couldn’t nail down a catchy moniker. Officially, the event would be known as the “First AFL-NFL World Championship Game,” but its organizers referred to it as the “final game,” the “championship game” and other iterations that never quite caught on.

During one of these meeting, Hunt blurted out an alternative with staying power: the “Super Bowl.” He soon admitted that his two children’s latest obsession, an ultra-bouncy orb called the “Super Ball,” had likely inspired his flash of brilliance. (The world “bowl” was already in use for college football championships at the time.) Other members of the planning committee began tossing the name around, and before long the media picked up on it.

The Hunt kids’ beloved Super Ball was the brainchild of chemist Norman Stingley, who developed it as a side project while working for a California rubber company in the early 1960s. He discovered that highly pressurized synthetic rubber had remarkable bounce when shaped into a sphere. Stingley’s employer passed on the innovation, but toy manufacturer Wham-O—maker of the Hula Hoop and Frisbee—understood its appeal and bought the concept. By the summer of 1965 the Super Ball was one of America’s most popular playthings.

Really loving FPL the past few weeks took a 4pt hit last week and 8pt hit this week and have went from 98k to 59k OR in two weeks and the fact I have a GW rank this week of 35K and 2 players to play (Yaya & Hazard) is amazing. Sorry I know there is a lot of good fpl managers here on this site but I am really happy as this is my first real season of FPL 🙂

                nor, SUN, STO, blank, AVL

Those are some mighty tempting fixtures for City, even with the blank.

But there are 2 games with Barca and a game v Chelsea in the FA Cup to consider too.

Does this mean that it's a good idea to get Kolarov and Dzeko, who are perhaps more likely to play the 'easy' games? Or could Negredo, Yaya and Silva just run riot in 3 home wins of 5 goals or more?
