As we brace ourselves for a weekend of FA Cup action, we’ve time to take stock and assess the lessons learned over Tuesday and Wednesday’s eight fixtures:

Sherwood Has His Own Agenda
Having kicked off his tenure at Tottenham with a 4-4-2, Tim Sherwood has gradually settled on a lone striker system as his preferred formation. As the weeks go by and the treatment room empties, he continues to fine tune his preferred first XI – last night saw Christian Eriksen drop out of the starting line-up for the first time since the new manager arrived, whilst Michael Dawson – who had previously played every minute of the season – joined the Dane on the bench as Younes Kaboul partnered Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the back-four. Emmanuel Adebayor’s goals seem one of the few guarantees at the Lane right now as Sherwood shows he’s not afraid to shirk big decisions and mix things up in his pursuit of a top four finish.

Sturridge is a Genuine Captaincy Option
In spite of his superb consistency, Daniel Sturridge’s first few months failed to convince us of his explosive Fantasy qualities. His first 12 appearances – five without Luis Suarez, seven with the Uruguayan – delivered just two scores of nine or more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, highlighting his lack of captaincy credentials at a time when his fellow forward ran riot upon his return from suspension. Now, it seems, the tables have turned. Since his comeback from injury, Sturridge has beaten Suarez’ hauls in four of their five starts together ans produced nine or more points in all but one of those matches. Not so long back, many felt doubling up on the duo was overkill – not only have Sturridge’s displays put that argument to rest, they have shown that, when it comes to our armband decisions, he has to be taken seriously.

Vlaar the Key to Villa’s Survival
The Dutchman’s return against Cardiff helped his side to a first clean sheet since Gameweek 20 and their seventh of the season. Vlaar has missed six games through hamstring problems in recent weeks and it’s telling that Paul Lambert’s side have failed to register a single shut-out in his absence, averaging 1.8 goals against without their captain, compared to 1.3 with him in the XI. The Midlands side sit just four points clear of the drop zone and, if Lambert is to steer them to safety, Vlaar’s presence at the back looks vital.

Solskjaer’s Still Tinkering
A shift from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2, with Kenwyne Jones joined by Fraizer Campbell up top, made little difference to Cardiff’s faltering form as they failed to score for the fourth time in six under their new manager. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not only omitted Peter Whittingham from the starting XI for the first time this term, he dropped the midfielder out of the squad altogether, whilst Kim Bo-Kyung – who had started against Swansea in the previous match – was also given the night off, despite Craig Bellamy’s suspension. The Norwegian still seems far from certain of his most efficient side and, despite some kind upcoming home games, his erratic selection policy is likely to keep Fantasy managers away.

Reid Isn’t Guaranteed Game Time
It was widely assumed that the Kiwi international would make an immediate return for the Hammers once fully recovered from an ankle problem. Reid had played very minute of the first 10 Gameweeks before sustaining the injury but, despite his return to fitness, has found himself behind James Collins and James Tomkins in the pecking order. With five clean sheets in the last six, we can hardly blame Big Sam for sticking with his current central defensive pairing – Collins’ goal against Norwich merely strengthened his case to continue as a regular, offering Fantasy managers a cut-price option at just 4.1 in FPL.

Moyes Doesn’t Know What To Do with Mata
Four games into his United career and Juan Mata has already started in three different positions under David Moyes. Handed his debut in “the hole” behind Robin van Persie, the Spaniard was shifted over to the right in the next two as Wayne Rooney was brought back into the starting XI – last night, he was moved to the left flank as Moyes drafted in Antonio Valencia on the right. With the Red Devils boss still seemingly nowhere nearer establishing a settled side, Mata’s arrival seems to have given Moyes more questions than answers – whilst the big-money move from Chelsea has boosted his game time, a move to his preferred central role may be out of Mata’s reach.

Swans Need Hernandez’ Creativity
Injuries have severely hampered the Spaniard’s game time this term, with ongoing hamstring problems limiting Hernandez to just 11 starts for Swansea. Handed a starting berth at Stoke last night after emerging from the bench to produce a pair of assists against Cardiff last Saturday, the former Valencia man teed up Chico Flores’ goal as the visitors scrapped for a draw at the Britannia. Despite his limited number of minutes, Hernandez has now registered six assists – two more than any Swansea player – and, with Michu still failing to find a way out of the treatment room, keeping his compatriot fit could be the difference between survival and a drop to the Championship for the Welsh outfit.

Personally will keep both thanks - if one don't rack em up the other does, Liverpool on fire scoring for fun and no Europe. I was just a bit silly getting Flannigan so long as Kolo is also in the side they won't keep cleanies and the spot is better filled by one of their midfielders...

          Formula for me is now:

Great cheap keepers : Mannone/Adrian/Marshall etc
2 x Chelsea at the back - maybe 1 Arsenal for home games
2 x City in the midfield and Haz
2 x Pool up top and add Kun when ready

then fill out with a few consistent earners like Lallana, Coleman and a couple of cheapies...happy days...

It's looking right on the money but the weird thing is, we've been here before - GW5 when Suarez came back from suspension. That time, Studge's hitherto consistent returns dried up and Suarez went apeshit. What's different this time?

In those GWs Liverpool were playing 4-4-2 with no Sterling in Rodgers' plans. Now 4-3-3 and Suarez drifting left has dented his scoring potential. Sturridge gets more chances.

Thoughts? I'm happy except for with Eriksen, though I can't see many decent replacements. Would like Gerrard but that would involve taking a hit and I'm not sure which player to downgrade to make up the cash difference (most likely Januzaj would downgrade).

    GK:Mannone, Speroni

    MID:Yaya, Zaha, Puncheon, Hazard, Lallana
    ATT:Suarez, Studge, Ade

    How should I get Aguero?

I feel like I can't lose Studge or Suarez but would need a major downgrade somewhere else Ade>Aguero

    Hello, friends!

Sorry to take up space with this again but it's been a while and with so many visitors on here perhaps someone will enjoy this, and with no games in a while now and all...

    I'll make it short.

A few months ago I made a Google Chrome extension called Gargatron, the FPL stats machine which shows stats about your FPL team. It shows stuff like how well your captains and bench players have done and how far away you are from certain ranks. I'll post two screenshots and then the link to the installation page. You need the Google Chrome browser to use it.

    Screenshot of stats tab: http://i.imgur.com/D0hWsRu.png
    Screenshot of rankings tab: http://i.imgur.com/GF8KbdD.png

    Link to installation: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gargatron-the-fpl-stats-m/kpbaoamnogjcokjojimpmbdkdgobdhoe

It's of course free and not associated with anything except myself.

Thanks for your time and sorry if it didn't interest you.

              Nothing, unfortunately.

I wish I could come up with something here, but I think the Gargatron is something that's just a bit of fun as far as I'm concerned

Although if you have a seriously high amount of points spent on transfers that might be a clue, or a combination of low total captain score and high number if different captains. They're probably often related.

I had a suggestion for an enhancement. Not trivial by any means but if you could find a way of aggregating the scores it generates from everyone who uses it you could provide some benchmarks for people. For example, is my Total Captain Score (462) above or below average?

That would involve running a server and so on so I appreciate it's not easy. Anyway, thanks for your time.

Cheers for that suggestion. Mj6987 had something similar in mind above and I've had that suggestion before too.

I think it's a good idea and I'll see if I can come up with something for you!

I'm a tiny bit reluctant to use the data of the teams of the guys that use the Gargatron, but perhaps that's just me being overly cautious?

I think as long as it's anonymised and aggregated then there's no issue. You could have a checkbox to permit sharing (and users don't get averages without sharing). It's getting complex though 🙂

            It's certainly doable.

Or I could run it on a test sample of a certain number of teams every week and let a server hold the average of those teams to compare against.

bubz. mayb, but i figure in my opinion 16-22 is definitely a different mind or way of thinking than after university 22 thru 40...
40 i cut it ther as i thinkin ok,myb not 40 but after 45-50 you have a diff feel for thigs, less risk prine i guess.
afte 50 its defo a difft way of reasoning.

was asking as sometimes one ponders on a footie idea, but its good to know if one is talking to a 16 yr old or a 60 yr old. yes both can have inisghtful opinion, but it does make a diff.

im in that range dead enter, and i have freidn of 22 w/ more brais n than a 45.

            below 22 is university/teenager

No, he's not. I assume you're 23-25 yourself. I guarantee, you will change, and this opinion of yours will change as well. You will realize why we think that's a strange age bracket. As is 40+.

However, I have to admit, I don't understand half of what you say. So maybe I missed some valuable insight.

                  Seriously?

I don't know who are the people you know. People I know, who are in mid 20's and people in 30's have generally very different mindset - although less depending on their age and more on their life situation. Getting kids, for one, changes your life completely. I mean, if you actually feed your family.

To know what kind of person advices you - in a relevant manner - ask for what is his team like, and even better: what is the reasoning behind his choice. The rationale of his choices reveals you much more than his age. Kids usually know tons more about football than us adults, because they have more time for it, I definitely wouldn't reduce them to "hype" choices.

i see your pt. obviosuly one can expand upon my choices which i found quite difft.
rvp is kind of guy an under 22 would go given gt the name but rvp sacrifices equilibrium in a team and cheaper def or mid. whereas a 60 yr old guy would mayb go for a top 5 gol scorer in giroud when at the time arsenal was best team. yes no arsenal not doing well. 20-20 everyhting is easy. imm just illustrating a pt.

20-40 yes get maried the whole 9 yrd...but even married age braket of more risk taking obviously calculating risk.

Triple no. I don't think this half works by age. I know a lot of people from that middle group, we never agree on these choices. Most no is the first one:

Giroud, only people who understand modern football and are keen to stats analysis go for him. Grandpa's go for a pure goal scoring striker, one they like because they see him scoring goal, something they understand. Like RVP.

I have two top 500 finishes in last 3 seasons and have found this season very hard work! Up to inside 9k now but it's been very difficult. Not sure why. I think there are more people taking it seriously this year (largely due to growth of this site). Also, I have had an unlikely amount of injuries which has made it difficult to implement any sort of transfer strategy.

Also, like the others say above, Yaya and Ramsey.

I was late onto Ramsey and never owned Yaya.

I go a lot on the stats and Yaya just shouldn't score that many points! Think he is slowing down a bit now.

I haven't had Yaya. I got rid of Coleman too early and didn't have Ramsey for most of his points. My rank is currently 1007. Each year is different, managers must adapt. The season is far from over though remember!

That's an interesting point on strategy: stats

Could it be that the stats on offer, including those in the members area of this site are insufficient or is it up to the user to decifer how to use them

The biggest issue for me is "threat". I think FAR too much emphasis has been place on threat as far as stats go. The likes of Adel Taarabt always come up as suggestions on tables, RMT etc but that's a very one dimentional way of looking at who is going to score next.

I noticed Mark often went for odd ball players in the early part of this season and wondered if he was guilty of over analysing things a little this season? Always looking for the next big thing and ignoring the current big thing. Still an fpl legend though, just a thought

My own shortcomings as an FPL manager.

Struggled to adapt and change with the times. Stuck by my own theories about which player is good and not for too long. Definitely something I need to work on for next season. To realize for example that United won't suddenly turn great again, or that Ramsey isn't just a flash in the pan. Can't make those mistakes and still do great.

Every FPL season is different in how it unfolds and it's hard to get it right every time!

Hey everyone, just a little heads up. I brought in Ade in my wildcard for GW24 only to promptly ditch him because of the supposed injury at Hull...for Edin Dzeko.

Now, 23 points worse off, I'm reversing the move because it totally and utterly dismays me to see him alongside the SAS in my front three. Last night was the final straw: I blame HIM for the weather and I don't CARE if he's got Stoke at home a week on Saturday. I know that if I keep him he'll do absolutely nothing but seeing as I'm selling him, a hat-trick is as sure as the sun rising tomorrow.

So, there you go. Dzeko (c) GW27. It's fate.

putting forward some suarez regression explainers.

    the obvious: fixtures

how incredible some of his goals were.
the guy was scoring 40 yard volleys, 30 yard curlers, free kicks basically week after week. in that norwich game his celebration for 3 of the goals was laughing because he couldn't believe what he had just done each time. even the best players can't keep up scoring goals that insane.

how dodgy some of his assists were.
dodgy assists probably follow players like suarez more than others due to his relentless style (a bit like tevez for example). but even so he went on a run of assists where only about 2 in 8 were actual assists. it was so extreme it was also unlikely to last, or at least last at that extreme rate.

    slight fatigue.
liverpool with no europe and an early exit of the league cup have had it pretty sweet, even so their west brom and fulham games were days after big games against everton and arsenal. imo despite suarez' fitness record keeping him on for 85 and 90mins in both those matches, both of which were won at half time, was poor from rodgers. nothing to gain result wise, and a lot to lose in upcoming matches. he should have gone off on 65mins like sturridge imo

Oh yeah, these are all certainly correct to some extent.

He was never going to keep up that ridiculous scoring.

Nothing to be worried about in the end though in my opinion, he'll continue to be the best FPL player in the game, just not by such a gigantic distance.

on another day suarez could have easily got a goal and assist, hit the post and miss by coutinho.

I don't think he is showing signs of tiredness. He will be back in the mega points very soon

I think we were all a little mad thinking it would keep going, at least the last few weeks have allowed some differentials to come through.

Good points. Another thing is fixtures: almost all of his goals in his superb run were at home against bottom-7 clubs. Absolute flat track bully. Now, in more even games, big teams at home or smaller teams away, he is still getting goals, but no longer ridiculous amounts of them. This was predictable. I stated it in December.

    Shambles....

    HELP?!

    Boruc, Davis
    Coleman, Kos, Chester, Ward, Burner
    Haz, Yaya, Mata, AJ, Kim
    RVP, Suarez, JRod

    0.6 in bank. 2 FTs

Any suggestions gratefully received, as I think I'm running out of ideas and definitely running out of green arrows 🙁

      Hi pal

Isn't the sensible thing to just wait for the FA cup games to be over with and then decide? No need to try and guess when we will know in a few days time.

      You'll bounce back for sure

Yeah, that's what I'm going to do Garg - but I'm taking every wrong turn currently (and been smashed by injuries) so any early advice gratefully received.

Have you seen my last 7 or 8 GWs 🙁

Yeah you've hade a bit of a mare. Still doing better than me at least 🙂

With what we know atm I'd probably look at bringing in a Chelsea defender if I were you. Soon as I got the chance I'd probably lose RVP to fund it

Azpi / Cahill on the hit list.

If Aguero makes a return will get him for RVP, for the double but... May as well keep RVP for palace this week.

atm I think Aguero can wait till at least GW30 if City win at the weekend.

I don't think I should be giving advice but I would be dumping any of:

Coleman - costs too much and Everton defence not as good as people though
Mata - until he is played in the hole and Januzaj is a starter, can't see him scoring many points
RVP - too expensive and too many options around
      JRod - not good enough

So Chelsea cover, a slightly better midfield hitter, Aguero when he comes back and a better forward.

      'Sup Evs 🙂

Without consideration for the impending blanks I'd say Aj is a priority, even more so if Arsenal knock Liverpool out the cup as Gerrard would have only one competition to focus on. I'd also consider Paulinho and Bentaleb.
RVP -> Sturridge or Ade may have to happen to fund that, though I imagine you're holding off for Aguero.

The defence is difficult. You could sort one of Burner and Chester out this week perhaps, for Chambers. Then get Distin in next week for the other?
      hmm not sure!

I don't think Mata is too pressing an Issue, though you should Get Lallana in, Lucy rates him very highly so I hope his points will continue.

Is anyone else, like me, slow onto bandwagons?

I don't really tend to bring players in until I am sure that they are the "real deal".

This sometimes hurts me, like being late onto Ramsey, Lallana, Sturridge, etc or missing out altogether on point fests like Cisse and Sissoko last year.

On the other hand, it means that I don't waste too many transfers on duds.

depends. for me a big point total out of no where (or even 2) isn't enough on its own, i have to be able to explain why it happened in my head, if it makes perfect sense then i'll jump on the bandwagon very early
