After a week’s absence as we barely drew breath between matches, a weather-conscious Digest focuses on Tottenham’s revitalised talisman and on Liverpool’s rise to title contenders. As the British winter plays havoc with the Fantasy schedule, we brace ourselves for the impending impact on the upcoming fixture list:

THE PLAYER

Emanuel Adebayor has seen his season turn around from first-team outcast under Andre Villas-Boas to the most sought-after player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game this week. A brace and assist on Wednesday evening at Newcastle underlined his consistency and transformation in confidence under the guidance of new boss Tim Sherwood, whilst the absence of Christian Eriksen for the 4-0 win confirms that Adebayor is really the only Tottenham attacking choice going forward.

Eight goals and four assists since earning a recall to the starting line-up over Christmas has led to Adebayor averaging 7.7 points per game since Sherwood’s installation, the same returns commanded by Sergio Aguero over the whole season. Transferred into over 65,000 FPL teams since Wednesday evening, he still offers outstanding value at only 8.1 and looks hard to resist over the coming weeks as Fantasy managers look to navigate their way through blank Gameweeks and rotation risks. The Togolese striker’s contributions have helped Tottenham to seven wins, two draws and only one defeat in the period since his return, as Sherwood’s team stay hot on the heels of the Champions League contenders above them.

With the north London side out of the FA Cup and distracted only by the Europa League, Adebayor’s impact in league games looks essential if Sherwood is to clinch that fourth place spot – a scenario that would arguably cement his own position at the helm for next term. We could well see team-mate Roberto Soldado given pitch time for the Thursday night European games, then, in order to keep his fellow forward fresh for domestic duties.

Tottenham’s goal drought also appears to be over, with a healthy two-per-game average since the turn of the year and enticing fixtures against Norwich and Cardiff next on the calendar. Adebayor also looks a genuine armband contender for Gameweek 28, when City and United face a blank and the other title contenders all hit the road. Fixtures stiffen after this, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal to play in the following five but, given that he’s already notched against the likes of United and Everton and has scored or assisted in seven of his 10 appearances, Adebayor has done more than enough to dispel the doubters.

THE TEAM

Even the biblical weather may not be quite sufficient to bring Victor Moses back into the Liverpool reckoning, as his in-form team-mates wreak havoc on top-flight backlines. Liverpool are rampant and while the top three have started to falter, Brendan Rodgers’ ‘Chihuahuas’ have taken full advantage and now sit just a point behind City and four off the top. The goal machine is also in full flow – the Merseysiders have now scored 66 times in the Premier League this term, just two behind Manuel Pellegrini’s men, 18 more than both Arsenal and Chelsea and 30 more than fifth placed Tottenham.

As we head into the final dozen games, it is significant that Liverpool do not, at present, have a midweek game scheduled between now and the end of the season. Whilst their title rivals have to cope with upcoming European exploits, rest and rotation should be no issue for Rodgers and his team over the run-in – a point that Jose Mourinho has already discussed earlier in the week.

Liverpool arguably have the best fixtures, too, having already played all their rivals away from home and can look forward to Anfield advantage as the remaining head-to-heads against Chelsea, City and Spurs approach. Immediate matches also look enticing, with home games against Swansea and Sunderland sandwiching a visit to Southampton – crucially, this coincides with a period where many rivals face blanks or will look to rotate their squads.

Rodgers’ free-scoring side have shown there’s been method to the madness of throwing your eggs into one Liverpool basket this season. Doubling up on the ‘SAS’ has become a very viable option with Daniel Sturridge outperforming Luis Suarez week after week since returning from injury, as discussed in yesterday’s Scout Notes.

Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard’s class and consistency can no longer be overlooked. Returns in 14 of the last 17 appearances have served his owners well – anyone brave enough to opt for the Reds skipper in addition to Suarez and Sturridge will have been rewarded handsomely in recent matches. With Raheem Sterling offering a budget midfield alternative to his captain at 5.6 in FPL and even Philippe Coutinho starting to find a semblance of consistency, there’s no surprise many are looking to load up on the Merseysiders for the run-in.

THE TALKING POINT

In previous Fantasy seasons, the weather has often played a significant part, with heavy snow the normal source of frustration to managers. Whilst the cold snap may be yet to hit, the midweek winds which caused the cancellation of two top-flight fixtures played havoc with our Fantasy fortunes and saw the biggest variance in team scores of the season so far – welcome to some, but others saw hard-grafted mini-league leads diminish in one fell swoop. The impact does not end there, of course, as the urgently awaited re-scheduling will further shape our transfer planning in weeks to come.

Ironically, this latest twist comes at a time where additional blanks are about to bite in Gameweeks 28 and 29, with the latter still remaining a very foggy picture until this coming weekend’s FA Cup fixtures are decided – a situation we’ve already discussed in this article.

Add to this mix the impending resumption of the Champions League and we have a perfect storm of rotation, blanks, double Gameweeks and fatigue to consider. The fortunate few still holding a wild card will be licking their lips, but will also be faced with the additional dilemma of when to play it. Gameweeks 28- 31 look pivotal and transfers need to be planned very carefully – it is advisable to hold off on any Gameweek 27 trades until the FA Cup matches have been played and the fog clears a little. In particular, the outcomes of the big clashes between Arsenal and Liverpool and Man City and Chelsea will be significant to our planning.

City are a great example of this. Manuel Pellegrini’s side already have a blank Gameweek 28 and, should they beat Chelsea in the cup tomorrow, may face a blank for the following Gameweek – unless their league clash with Villa, currently pencilled in for Saturday March 9, is moved to midweek. They already have a double Gameweek 31, in addition to a further double once the home game against Sunderland is rescheduled. If the Villa match also needs to be shifted to another date, Pellegrini’s side could have three doubles over the last nine Gameweeks but if they continue to progress in the Champions League, rest and rotation could destroy many a best-laid plan and reduce their league line-ups to a guessing game.

With United already missing Gameweek 28 and Chelsea and Arsenal also under threat for Gameweek 29 if they progress, fielding 11 players looks the first objective – clearly, it is wise to hold any player in our squads who has a Gameweek 29 fixture confirmed following the cup matches. At the moment, though, many of the scenarios are hypothetical and we’ll hopefully get a better handle on the situation after the weekend’s matches. The Fantasy season is set to be blown off course a little but, with some careful planning and plenty of articles for your perusal, we should hopefully navigate a safe passage through the schedule’s choppy waters.

Wow, quite pleased with myself, a gameweek of 107 after 2 games postponed.

A gameweek rank of 56th in the world :).

Any way of viewing the leaderboards for just one gameweek at all?

Nope, the only way to see it is if it happens to be the first GW in a month then you can sort overall by month. Depending on how well you did last GW you should be in wth a crack for February's month competition. I think last year you won a case of Lucozade sport and an mp3 player.

I think he was useful as a rotating tool when I had RvP, but as long as I leave cash for Benteke to Aguero I think there's little point in holding Noone. I'll likely swap him for a short term option like Nolan or Adam, who can then easily become a DGWer like Mirallas or AJ

I watched Swansea rarely when he was in..was he carrying the injury for a long time? Because he had surgery on the ankle, no? Is it possible that's attributable to the stark lack of form relative to last season?

Well last season this was the time we had our best run, traditionally we have fallen away from here, probably because of a small squad.

The problem is the number of players we can't afford to get injured.

We can't do without Sagna, Mertz, Ramsey, Walcott and Giroud.

Whereas Man City just need Kompany and Yaya, and Chelsea need Hazard and Ramires.

I think we will be out of the title race by the end of our tough run.

Podolski is pretty bad up front. Can't hold the ball up, lazy, doesn't make good runs. I would play Giroud over Podolski up top all day. The problem is that we basically play with 5 number 10's behind Giroud, who plays like a 9.5. Giroud is only effective with a second striker there for him to link up with.
Our balance was good with Walcott because Giroud had a partner. So Podolski should be played left wing, even if it means sacrificing Cazorla.

            Giroud
            Podolski Ozil Rosicky
            Wilshere Flamini

            Should be our team.

Isn't it so frustrating when we manage to get the ball between the lines, and then all Giroud can do is bounce it back out the lines? Not one player with penetration.

I understand. Have you seen him playing with Ribéry and Valbuena for France? his link-up play with them works amazingly well time to time, Ribéry in particular has learned how to use Giroud to get to great scoring position.

You know, Giroud was originally approached by Bayern, but as they wanted to still watch the EC, he joined Arsenal instead. I've often wondered what would it have been like, because he would have been made to play between Ribéry and Robben. In Arsenal, instead, I felt already before he joined you that he is choosing the wrong team. After all, it seems I'm not quite right, because Wenger appeared to have a plan how to use him, he apparently wanted that type of player to develop Arsenal's game, but often the result just looks like an unfortunate mixture of two different styles of play.

And remember: you don't have to ply same XI every night. You can always replace one, say Özil, with Cazorla, for one match. Even in Spain, Özil was not used to play full 90 minutes every match.

Exactly. Even a change in formation once in a while would be helpful.

The change in our team against West Ham when we changed to a 4141 was unbelievable,

                Giroud
                Podolski Cazorla Ozil Walcott
                Arteta

Even that was more to do with Ramsey's injury than Wenger being proactive.

We need Rosickys energy with Ramsey out, so you would put Cazorla in for Ozil. I wouldn't argue with that, but our balance is all wrong right now.

No they wouldn't. Pod can score, but you don't seem to understand how much of Arsenal's game depends on Giroud.

On the other hand, resting Giroud once a while, for example when they are leading or have an attacking minded opponent against which they can counter, would do a lot of good to the team.

Also resting Özil once a while. Vucinic loan deal would have done good to Arsenal's title hopes, any of them.

Add kosc to that list. You need both, Mert and Kosc.

Ramsey and Walcott ain't so necessary. Ramsey has been phenomenal, but you do well with Flamini-Wilshere, even Flamini-Ox could be good. I think you're less dependent on single players in CM department, you have many good combinations, but the problem is that you've suffered so many injuries/suspensions there that you don't have any of those right now.

If Källström returns to fitness, he will be a good addition.

Walcott, on the other hand, is also a big time liability. He is very risky asset to use, means one less man to defend, completely. I understand your point about Giroud being quite isolated upfront without either Wally, Ramsey or Pod, but one of them is enough, all can bring the second striker presence in the box if needed, all can link up with Giroud and score goals, although Pod often seems reluctant to. He seems to choose his matches, 4/5 he doesn't appear in the box at all, makes 0 crosses and so on, and then he suddenly comes alive in the 5th match and scores a brace from nowhere. Anyway, I, too, think that Giroud-Wally is a winning combination, but you did magnificently with Özil-Ramsey-Giroud triangle when Wally was away. You don't depend on Walcott. In fact, if a good offer was laid on table, I would sell him, and by a more complete player to his position.

I couldn't disagree more on Walcott. He is 2nd to none for off the ball movement in behind. Podolski certainly is inconsistent, but Wenger needs to instruct him to play between the right back and the centre back, rather than dropping deep or playing wide. (Eg- some of the 2nd half against Palace)
Take away Ramsey's attacking contribution, he is still vital. He gives energy to our team (like Rosicky) and no other player in the premier league makes more tackles (opta)

With Walcotts injury, we should have loaned Tello for 6 months. He is Spain's Walcott, and Barca I'm sure would of let him go with Neymar, Sanchez, Pedro and Iniesta (when fit with Fabregas in the middle) all ahead of him.

In reality, we were given a chance with the January window to replace the players we lost, and if we fall away everyone will point to the monumental failure in January.

Well, come on, what Walcott does is that he hangs on the edge of offside and uses his pace to get scoring chances. That works fine, when opponent doesn't sit back in defence. However, often the opponent does just that, and he is pretty toothless when there is no space behind the defence line. Furthermore, the liability that I referred to is just that Walcott doesn't defend at all. He stays so immensely high up that it leaves the whole right flank very vulnerable to attacks. I reckon his abilities, but they are in a very limited area of game, and that makes him a double-edged sword: he does one thing greatly, and that can win you a bunch of goals, but meanwhile he brings in great disadvantages and you have to compensate for them.

I completely agree on Podolski. Actually, it could work fine if you played him as a support striker to Giroud, so he could profit from all the balls that Giroud wins and use his great shot more. Then you'd just have, for example, Rosicky on left and Cazorla on right, both in "inverted" positions - or Özil on either side, or Walcott, but you get the point. A sort of attacking minded version of 4-2-3-1 that comes half way to 4-4-1-1 with the support striker.

It's true that Ramsey has been wonderful to you, I don't say anything about that. But, is he irreplaceable? Now. You do not fall for losing him. He does not hold that kind of structural place in your team. He fills a couple of positions greatly, but you have also very fine replacements for those positions. You are not thin on his position, like you are in CB's, CF's and RB's.

Nah... this is just one of the points this season where they have a terrible schedule (last truly awful one was nap-mci-CHE, before that there was CHE-LIV-dor-mun-SOU-MAR, all competitions). Now it is liv-MUN-LIV-BAY, combined with an immense injury/suspension list. They'll have a little breather after that, and I'd advise them to go all out at that point to get as much points as possible, because then ther's coming another nightmare: bay-tot-che-MCI-eve. If they don't win Bayern at home, I think they should send reserves to Munchen and play their best team, full engagement, against Spurs, then defend the points they can at Chelsea and again try to counter City at home. The good thing is that if they crash out of cups, they have full weeks between Spurs, Chelsea and City matches, so it's not like when they played Liverpool, Dortmund and ManU within 7 days.

If they can survive that killer run of matches, they'll have a very fine fixtures to save their season with in the end. They'd just might wish that these good fixtures that they have in the end would have been distributed more evenly to the season so that they'd have some of them after their CL and other cup matches, and not always a big match after another.

They'd have walked the league with Suarez, easily 8-10 points better off. He knows what he's doing, just needs a striker.

Being competitive while you couldn't spend was a good achievement.

I don't understand the problem. Let him spend in the summer then you'll be better again next year.

The problem is that he doesn't spend, and doesn't seem to understand squad strength. Ozil was basically offered to us by Real Madrid in the final week, rather than us actually perusing him. We have gone 2 windows without getting a 4th choice centre back (and we have been very lucky to get away with it so far), and 3 windows without getting a striker we have needed.

The fact is that we will get best by Bayern, will probably be out the Pl after our run ( we can't win big games), and we are very unlikely to get too far in the FA cup.

His ideas are stale, we have played the same formation for nearly a decade.

I think that it's tough to judge his spending as this is the first year that you've had the budget, and being tight with the money isn't a bad thing. Spurs spent £100mil, Man Utd spent around £60mil and you're doing much better than both. Wenger is almost famous for only doing business in the summer and I think he should be judged on what he does during/after the world cup.

Finishing in the Top 4 should be considered as a success for the current Arsenal side, if you'd offered a promised top 4 finish to Liverpool over the last few years, or to Man Utd this year they'd bite your hand off

I suppose we will have to wait and see. But I'm tired of broken promises. We have been given the line about having money to spend for years.

Yes, I am a Chelsea fan, but I can be unbiased, unlike many around.

I feel Wenger should have built a good enough team, yes he has a very good eye for the young players, but only developing young players wouldn't get you anywhere. He needs to make signings, and with all due respect, stop complaining about other clubs selling or buying. I know where his arguments come from, but if you really need to build a team, you need to throw a little cash, not a lot, but yeah, you do need fresh players with ambitions to win silverware. Arsenal lack that maybe under him.

I disagree. Agree with Breadbin. Being competitive without being able to spend was marvelous achievement, and would you lot have got Suarez in the summer markets, you would have no trouble winning PL. You are just very very short on strikers.

But one tactical thing I don't get: why is Arsenal playing set pieces as they do. They have a squad made to succeed in set pieces, yet they're about the worst team in PL in set pieces. Particularly defending them, that zonal marking is sometimes so ridiculously easy to break. It looks completely stupid when Arsenal players stand in their zones in the box with only one opposition player in middle of them all, and all other opponents waiting at the edge of the box.

I agree with Camp here on set pieces. We have seen Arsenal make terrible mistakes. Against United, when RvP got that free header, and this past week, against Skrtel, especially his second goal.

              I disagree, again. 😀

Statistically zonal marking is more effective, and we can't go man to man with our relatively small squad.

RvP scored his header exactly where Mertz would have been had he played, and you just have to hold your hands up to that Skrtel goal, it was a phenomenal header.

But you can't give away a free header in the box, to a player that is probably the biggest threat in the area like that. And he had also scored in the game early on.

As for the RvP header, you might want to see it again, Giroud's positioning in the corner was just pants. He wasn't marking anyone, and that header showed just why regional marking wouldn't work against top teams.

Have you ever been into a situation where your instict told you to "Captain him in or you'll regret for the rest of this season!".

Well honestly, I had, but usually ignored it and regret afterwards. I am just wondering if any of you have been following purely on your insticts to captain somenone or to bring him in your squad and eventually succeded in following your gut rather than anyone else's advice.

I haven't gone against the grain too much this season. My gut has generally been in line with captaining Suarez most weeks.

Last season I did well. Finished top 300 with gut calls. Though I did have a bad captaincy choice once when I chose Vertonghen and he got 2 points.
