With a weekend of FA Cup action getting underway later today, Fantasy managers still have plenty to ponder. Santi Cazorla misses out for Arsenal, John Terry is still sidelined for Chelsea, Michu may return for Swansea, Samir Nasri is back for City, whilst Roberto Martinez admits he’s keen to be cautious with Ross Barkley’s fitness. Here’s what yesterday’s press conferences brought us:

Arsene Wenger will be without the services of Santi Cazorla for Sunday’s home clash with Liverpool. The Spaniard is ruled out through illness as the Gunners look to avenge last weekend’s 5-1 hiding at Anfield. Wenger welcomes Mathieu Flamini back from suspension, though, but admitted he may not make too many changes from the side that drew with United on Wednesday evening:

“I will play a team with a good opportunity, a good chance to qualify. Will I rest one player, or two or three, I don’t know yet. Certainly we will have just have one focus, which is to win the game. We have rotated quite well, if you look at the number of players we have used. I have the same level of confidence in every player. For example, I rate Jenkinson but Sagna has a bit more experience so when we go in a game with more pressure I give the advantage sometimes to the experienced [player].”

Jordan Henderson may miss out for Liverpool after undergoing wrist surgery, with a late decision expected to be taken on the midfielder’s availability. Brendan Rodgers reckons Glen Johnson could remain sidelined for the Emirates trip. The right-back returned to training over the last few days and his manager is optimistic he could be in the frame for next weekend’s home clash against Swansea:

“We’ll be similar to what we were the other night [against Fulham]. Glen Johnson is working very well. I’m not sure he’ll be ready for the game this weekend, but if we can have a good week next week he’ll be very close. He looks fresher and he looks fitter. That period that he’s had out has really helped him. He’s in good condition. But there is still a bit to go yet.”

Samir Nasri and Javi Garcia are back in the City squad for this evening’s visit of Chelsea. Manuel Pellegrini has admitted Sergio Aguero, Fernandinho and Matija Nastasic are all still sidelined through injury before proceeding to hail Nasri’s return as crucial:

“Nasri is a very important player, so it’s impossible not to miss him. But we’ve also had other injuries before Sami, with David Silva, Sergio Aguero or Jovetic or Kompany and we always managed to continue winning. I think in the last two weeks, maybe we have injuries in the same position and that was our major problem.”

John Terry misses out yet again as Chelsea make their way to the Etihad. Jose Mourinho confirmed his captain is sidelined for the third successive match due to a muscle problem, whilst his worries in central defence are building – Gary Cahill was due for scans on the calf complaint he picked up during the midweek draw at West Brom.

Gus Poyet may be set to welcome back Carlos Cuellar from a hip injury as Sunderland prepare to face Southampton. The Black Cats boss has confirmed his intentions to play Emmanuel Giaccherini and new boy Ignacio Scocco but also revealed the cancellation of Wednesday’s trip to City has had a significant effect on his likely line-up:

“The postponement changed my plans, no doubt. It’s a totally different situation now with no game midweek, so it will be a totally different team. Normally you don’t put out the same team on Saturday that you put out on Wednesday but we didn’t play a game Wednesday so I have to bear that in mind. It gives me a chance to name a stronger side than I would have but I will still make changes though. Giacchy needs to play football and we need to help Ignacio feel the pace of the English game. I’m sure he’ll be surprised at the speed – in the first 10 minutes he’ll be thinking ‘oh my god!’ – but he needs to get used to it and this is an opportunity for him.”

Roberto Martinez discussed the fitness of Lacina Traore and Ross Barkley ay Everton’s press conference yesterday. The Toffees manager confirmed the former is poised for his club debut after arriving on loan from Monaco last month before revealing he somewhat regrets rushing Barkley back into action after the youngster was sidelined with a toe injury:

“Lacina has been sharp in training and has surprised everyone in the medical department at how quickly he has got his fitness levels high for the competition. We have to make sure there is no risk for him to participate but, clearly, there is a good opportunity for him to be involved on Sunday in one way or another. …..I did bring [Barkley] back too early, especially for the game against Aston Villa. We need to make sure that now, he’s fully recovered and refreshed, and is ready to have a massive role between now and the end of the season. Ross is going to be vital for us in this final third, and we need to make sure we use him wisely and when he is 100 per cent.”

Swansea boss Garry Monk is hopeful of a return to action for Michu at Goodison. The Spaniard has failed to play since late December after undergoing ankle surgery and missed a couple of days’ training recently but has now stepped up his recovery:

“He was training today, so we’ll see how he feels. If he’s a possibility for the weekend, we will talk to the player. Maybe he will be involved on the weekend.”

Kenwyne Jones and Fabio are cup-tied for Cardiff’s home clash with holders Wigan. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are waiting to hear back from United for confirmation of Wilfried Zaha’s availability, though – the on-loan wide man was an unused sub for his parent club in the Swans’ win at Old Trafford last month. The Bluebirds boss hinted he may make some changes for the clash during yesterday’s press conference:

“It’s a chance for some players to come in and show they should be playing in the league and I do not go into any game hoping we lose.”

Tune in for watching paint dry.

These Winter Olympics are garbage. I watched Women's Alpine Skiing for a while today, and after first 11 competitors had tried, I think only 2 of them had arrived to goal. The other day, I saw pictures of cross country skiing, and the guys were wearing shorts because it was +25 Celsius - snow melts at 0 Celsius.

Well, that's all I've seen so far, and don't intend to see any more.

If you filter the player list by "Big chances missed", you can see who's going to be really susceptible to these points deductions.

Giroud is top with 14 chances missed, followed by Negredo (11), Benteke (10), Soldado (9), Suarez / Aguero / Crouch (8)

Not fully understanding these substitutions in the gameweek lark...Does it mean that the likes of "cameo"players become a little more viable as you can get shut if they do a 10 min appearance...and I'm looking at you Kolarov and Dzeko.

It's probably like in CL fantasy, you can substitute them if you still have gamedays left for that GW. So, yes.

Transfer your lowest scoring players on Saturday out for your Sunday players and repeast on Monday.

Yes, this does increase the value of rotation risks. Also, the deadline is 15 minutes before the first fixture of each day which will help every time City have an early kick off.

Wakey, you have to bear in mind that it'll only work if Kolarov plays on the first day of the GW.

Next season it would make sense to have Europa league teams in place as subs as they tend to play later in the GW and can be transferred in for blanks.

          Hope that makes sense!

I'd say so. With a squad of 25 it feels like you can take a few risks but until we have a full season it will be hard to determine how badly injuries can affect things.

The scores on the transfers page in UFPL have been adjusted for the rules. Suarez has 259 (FPL: 204). There's a clear correlation between FPL and UFPL scores but it only takes a moment to see some players are better suited to UFPL.

So as far as I can tell, the basic UFPL tactic is to put all of your Saturday players into the starting lineup, have your 7 strongest Sunday players on the bench, and then decide Saturday night who you want to bring in?

At the moment, for instance, I have J-Rod as captain, with Suarez/Sturridge on the bench. If J-Rod draws a blank then I can just sub-in Suarez and make him captain?

Seems like there's too much focus on busy-work.

      TRANSFERS

During the game transfer windows you can make permanent transfers.
      Transfer window Opens Closes Limit
      Gameweek 1 22 Feb 12:30 01 Mar 14:45 4
      Gameweek 2 01 Mar 14:45 08 Mar 12:30 4
      Gameweek 3 08 Mar 12:30 15 Mar 12:30 Unlimited

Unused transfers are not carried over.

It is not possible to bring a new player into your starting squad whilst a Gameweek is in progress. Any players transferred in during the Gameweek will be available for selection for the following Gameweek.

      EMERGENCY LOANS

Outside of transfer windows you can't permanently transfer players. Instead you can bring in players on an emergency loan. Any number of players can be brought in for a period of up to 4 Gameweeks to temporarily replace players in your squad. At the end of the loan period the loaned players will be removed from your squad and the original players will be made available again.

The number of points per player that will be deducted depends on how many Gameweeks you wish to loan the player(s) for:

      1 Gameweek – 4 points per player
      2 Gameweeks – 7 points per player
      3 Gameweeks – 9 points per player
      4 Gameweeks – 10 points per player

These points will be deducted in full from your overall total at the next Gameweek deadline.

Only one loan agreement can be in place at any one time. It is possible to cancel a loan agreement, however no points will be refunded if the next Gameweek deadline has passed.

When making emergency loans your squad will still need to adhere to the rules around budget, homegrown players and numbers of players from each Barclays Premier League team.

Does that mean that transfers within a gameweek (as long as they're within the limit) are free? Or is there still a -4pt penalty for second and subsequent transfers? The rules don't mention this penalty, so presumably it's not there.

Will make it much easier to reshape a team around an expensive returning player (cough Aguero)

Yeah those transfers are free. It doesn't specify if you can take hits for additional transfers (they ought to clarify the rules for this) but I assume you can't.

So basically you get 4 transfers for GW28, 4 for GW29, unlimited for GW30 and none after that.

I love Bayern Munich with regards to SkyBet. They offered me a free £10 bet if I put £10 on any sporting bet.

So, I put £10 on Bayern to win (almost a dead cert!)

Then, with my free £10 bet, a 5-fold accumulator of:
    Chelsea
    Cardiff
    Ipswich
    Wolves
    &Rochdale
    =£299.78

    Bring it on.

I am significantly behind in my cash mini league but I have a wildcard in hand. With the blanks and double game weeks coming up it is probably my best opportunity to make up the difference.

For those in a similar situation, how are you planning to use your wild card?

        On loan.

He's actually been playing really well for them since he joined. Hopefully we will be able to make a bit of money from the sale of him at the end of this season.

Spurs get 40% of any sell on fee so we need him to have a stormer in the Champions League so that we can get a decent price for him as, clearly, Redknapp will never pick him again for QPR.

Just tinkering with UFPL. It's kind of like a draft league in that injured stars who might be returning soon are gold on your bench, right? Aguero, Ramsey, Michu come to mind.

Must say, the jargon for transfers/loans, matchdays/gameweeks is a bit confusing though.

Yep, I've got Ramsey in my reserves already, trying to work out if I can finance for Aguero too.

The resistance to player price changes (0.1m for every 0.3m in the main FPL game) should reduce the need to transfer-out your short and medium-term injuries too. Just stick them in the reserve list.

If you look at the transfer lists on the UFPL site, the Total Score column shows different figures to the FPL site - they're presumably adjusted to show what they would've scored in the whole season so far.

I'm not convinced all of that will be enough to offset the additional points awarded for scoring goals. In a typical game you might get 1 more point for key passes, 1 for big chances and 1 for crosses, say a gain of 3 points. The threshold of 8 for blocks/clearances/interceptions and for recoveries is actually quite high to earn many points that way (for a midfielder at least).

A goal scoring forward would get you 2 more points per goal, but would also benefit from things like key passes, which is probably why Suarez is still far and away the highest scoring player as he creates more chances than your typical forward, as well as scoring goals.

Compare the transfer pages for UFPL and FPL and a few things jump out, for example:

Mark Noble - 131 points (FPL: 79 points)

7th top scoring midfielder in UFPL

That will be very useful. The prices being from FPL should mean there's a few bargains in there.

I wonder if they will have different staring prices between the games next season.

I think they'll have to, otherwise all sorts of discrepancies will become apparent between the two games. But they've said Ultimate price changes will be linked to changes in the normal game, so not sure how that will work out.

Yeah, linking the price changes to the normal game suggests the same pricing.

Basing price changes on the transfers in a game with a different scoring system is obviously a flawed system so I wonder if they'll change that before 14/15.

The same thing that happened to Bolton the season they went down could well happen to Sunderland now.

Bolton had a cup run and then had a whole backlog of fixtures they had to play in a short space of time. That was what sent them down instead of us that season.
