The past seven days have been some of the most dramatic of the season, with the fixture list under threat from gales, falling masonry and the prospect of strike action – all this on the eve of Gameweek 29 being torn apart by FA Cup Quarter Finals. We look back at the Fantasy Football Scout community’s reaction to the week’s events and the discussion on the blanks and double Gameweeks to come. As ever, we also catch up with all the ongoing community tournaments, plus take time out to sift through some of the community’s early advice for those playing the newly launched beta of the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League game.

The Hottest Topics

Tuesday was the most anxious of days, as the community waited on the fate of the Fulham vs Liverpool clash – a fixture that hung in the balance thanks to potential strike action. Thankfully, Fantasy managers, and in particular Daniel Sturridge owners, were able to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The strike was called off, the game went ahead and the Liverpool striker notched up another huge points haul. But, as Bsloebadger’s post shows, if the game had been cancelled, there would have been some very strange formations this week among our depleted squads. Rasping Drive, who was staring at a potential 2-4-2 formation, was among the relieved masses.

While the threat of strike action looked to be our major concern at the start of the week, mother nature was to prove a far more threatening foe. Wednesday night saw Everton’s Goodison clash with Palace postponed due to storm-damaged buildings, while the gales also scuppered City’s meet with Sunderland at the Etihad. The fallout was certainly felt by the community, with Leaf amongst the biggest sufferers – he was seven players down thanks to Wednesday’s winds. Meanwhile, Yes The Sess was among those lucky souls to emerge smelling of roses – Laurent Koscielny’s points off the bench courtesy of the clean sheet for United helped a good few to a respectable Gameweek, despite the unforeseen blanks.

While we ponder just how Wednesday’s damage will create double Gameweeks down the line, the weekend’s FA Cup results will also lead to inevitable postponements in Gameweek 29. Buk II’s post proved one of the most popular this week as he calculated the probabilities of each Premier League fixture being cut from the Gameweek schedule. RabMac was also on hand to offer some sound Gameweek 29 advice – saving transfers to deal with the fallout of missing games topped his list.

Bsloebadger was on a roll this week with a further hot topic, this time focusing on an unlikely source of potential points – namely Norwich City’s key assets. He points out that, despite current form, their schedule, featuring home encounters against Stoke and Sunderland, makes them worthy of a punt.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s next two plum fixtures (nor, CAR) sparked interest from James Collins, who has his sights firmly set on Emmanuel Adebayor’s run of form, while Von Ryan’s Express likes the look of Paulinho as a midfield differential.

This week also saw the launch of a Beta version of the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game. Opening its gates on Saturday, the community was quick to set about constructing their 25-man squads for this spiced-up version of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) It’s not just the squad size that’s different to the traditional FPL game, the scoring also has some interesting tweaks, with extra points awarded for key passes and other performance stats. Studley was among those on hand to offer some guidance – his excellent spreadsheet on the point differences between players in the FPL and UFPL games proved a big draw. By the way, we’ve set up a Fantasy Football Scout league in the UFPL for those underway on the beta – the code to join is 1305-459.

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham Hotspurs has emerged as the stand out manager in Heelsoverhead’s Worst to First – 2 Million + Club – the tournament for FPL managers who suffered an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks. He’s been on the rise ever since and currently holds an impressive rank of 3,603.

TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing league lost 22 managers this week, with 138 now remaining. The Missing Link leads his “After Xmas League”, while Beric heads the seeding for both the FPL Open and Elite 64 competitions. Full details of his leagues can be found here.

Gameweek 26 saw myself reclaim the FFS Moderators and Contributors league lead and continue in front of the FPL part of the community’s Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games. Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the competition’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues, respectively.

DonTheSpecialOne continues to lead the PuffinBoy Memorial Cup, named after one of this site’s first posters. His rank of 147th is looking unbeatable among the competition’s old guard.

Some late news came in last weekend, which thankfully we have time to squeeze in this week related to Thomass’ Big Bash League. He is delighted to announced that he and Giggs Boson‘s team has won the final against d1sable and BlueLion‘s team.

    This Week’s Big Questions

Taking one for the team guys, in an effort to stop the endless questions! 😉

Personally, I will be waiting to make my transfers. But if you are forced into it or obsessed with price rises, here are the answers to your questions, based on what we know now:

    WHO WILL PLAY IN GW29?
    West Brom v Man Utd
    Cardiff City v Fulham
    Crystal Palace v Southampton
    Norwich v Stoke City
    Chelsea v Tottenham

    WHO WON’T PLAY?
    Arsenal v Swansea
    Man City v Aston Villa
    Newcastle v Everton
    Liverpool v Sunderland

    TO BE DECIDED:
    West Ham v Hull City

    And question 2:

WELL CAN’T THEY JUST BE PLAYED MIDWEEK?
    Here’s how I understand it…

UEFA frown on domestic matches clashing with European matches, and claim it is up to them whether it happens:

“...all its member leagues will abstain from scheduling matches in dates which are reserved for UEFA club competition matches, unless exceptional circumstances so justify and it is agreed with UEFA on a case-by-case basis…”
    (UEFA’s memorandum of understanding)

However, the Premier League disagrees and has said it is up to them:

“We have refused to sign because although we would never seek to go head-to-head with European games, sometimes it's inevitable. We don't believe Uefa have the right to say when domestic leagues can and can't schedule their fixtures”
(from the The Premier League's communications director - http://www.theguardian.com/football/2012/apr/04/premier-league-uefa-champions-league)

This was in 2012 and the Merseyside derby was played - i.e. a big game clashed with European fixtures.

However, the Prem were later fined for this:
“UEFA have taken more than a million pounds from the English clubs' pot of Champions League television money for scheduling domestic matches against the competition.
The 1.3million euro fine was imposed after UEFA's disciplinary panel found 'clashes relating to the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons.'

And UEFA said such things would be avoided in future:
“A UEFA statement said it will 'establish a working group, which will involve representatives of the FA, in order to avoid calendar clashes in future.'”

Although this doesn’t give us any definites, you have an idea.

Should the Prem re-arrange, here’s how it could work:
    CAN BE PLAYED:
    Newcastle v Everton
    Liverpool v Sunderland
    CANNOT BE PLAYED:
    Arsenal v Swansea
    Man City v Aston Villa

One thing is for certain - you can now be certain that things are uncertain. 😀

when the teams announce it really. you would think it would all be at the same time, but I think it's up to the admin teams at the clubs, rather than the Premier League really.

hopefully it will be in dribs and drabs over this week (hopefully before the end of the week!)

don't go crazy on the hits... e.g. getting rid of Yaya/SAS is a bad idea - you will want them back straight away, but won't be able to afford them.

yeah, good shout. Arsenal's fixtures mean you won't want them for a bit after GW29.

However, getting rid of a player you want straight back is dumb, especially with value tied up. If you spend -4 getting rid and -4 getting back, it's very dumb. 😉

With Yaya and Suarez though, they're season keepers - so value is irrelevant.

There are 8 CL matchdays left this season (4 for the round of 16, 2 for the QF and 2 for the SF); there is also an international break - so that's 9 midweeks excluded according to the above with 12 GW in FPL left this season. However If ManC win the FAC QF against Wigan (a distinct possibility) they will have 4 games to catch up - at least one of those games will have to be played in a CL GW?

    GW29 advice:

    1) If you've already used your transfer this week stop now, you're clearly not taking this seriously enough

    2) Do you absolutely need to use a transfer this week. Like is it life or death? Thought not, so save that.

    3) Can you field 11 players in GW28. Yes thats right 4 teams do not play in GW28, you wouldn't have thought so what with all the GW29 talk on here. You can? Great. Use your 2 free transfers next week to allow you to field as close to 11 players as you can GW29 as well as the other free transfer you'll receive prior to GW29

    4) Watch as you stupid rivals at work look at their team the day before the GW29 deadline to realise they have 4 players. Soak up the despair on their face. Then despair yourself as you realise how quickly they get over it because they know there is more to life that FPL and die a little inside thinking of all the hours you have spent planning as if you are going to war for this very moment

    5) Turn to the bottle

Replacement for Januzaj. Could go up to 7.2 but would rather keep it at roughly the equivalent amount (5 - 5.5 mil bracket)

    a) Puncheon
    b) Ince
    c) Zaha

Leaning towards Punch as he's on pens but Ince/Zaha would be an useful differential. Anyone else with the same problem?

    GW 29 post

    1. Everyone will be in a similar situation as you so stop panicking.

    2. At best you'll have one or two players above the average with all the time you waste planning, so stop panicking.

    3. That extra player will probably be Dan Burn, so stop panicking.

Looks like I'll carry the transfer this week and make just one next week as one of my GW29 buys will be Mata who I needn't buy until that week so I need to make a transfer next week bringing in a player who plays in both GW28 & 29

I'll be selling either Yaya or Silva so budget is not an issue.

The options are slim! So far I can only see Paulinho as a genuine option
