With the Gameweek 29 “chasm of despair” yawning, our remit ahead of the weekend is being shaped by those players immune to the pitfalls of missing fixtures. We’ll be checking on likely targets, while assessing the new regime at the Cottage and whether Arsene Wenger has handed us the most unlikely of budget options up front.

Fulham under Magath
The Cottagers are already feeling the force of Felix Magath’s arrival. The former Bayern coach wasted little time in panning the methods of the recently axed Rene Meulensteen – a bold move on the eve of his debut as a Premier League manager in a proverbial six-pointer at the Hawthorns. Renowned for his dictatorial style, Magath had his troops in for extra training this week in a bid to turn a tide of form that has seen Fulham lose four of their last five league outings – a run that also featured the shock FA Cup exit to Sheffield United. Few Fantasy managers will be anticipating a major turnaround but Magath’s confident first week in charge hints that we might well witness an instant impact. Fulham are one of the sides unaffected by the Gameweek 29 blanks and both Sascha Riether and Ashkan Dejagah have worked with the new manager before – they could become two potential Fantasy targets, along with Magath’s compatriot, Lewis Holtby. Magath and Holtby have history, with the new Fulham boss having twice sent the midfielder out on loan when managing Schalke. However, the Spurs loanee already looks a pivotal figure at the Cottage and, if Magath can get the best from him, in tandem with new signing, Konstantinos Mitroglou, we might yet cast an eye towards the Cottage. Mitroglou fired a brace for Fulham’s Under-21 side last week – it remains to be seen if we see the Greek hitman handed a debut at the Hawthorns but we’ll be watching for him, and the “Magath effect”, come Saturday.

Everton’s lineup at Chelsea
While the Toffees currently fall into the Gameweek 29 chasm, their fixtures following the weekend trip to Stamford Bridge are so strong that they have to remain in our Fantasy thinking. Sadly, things are no longer straightforward when it comes to Everton’s attacking assets. Whilst Roberto Martinez confirmed this week that Romelu Lukaku would be in the frame to return to action, the Belgian is unavailable to face his parent club but will now presumably tussle with Lacina Traore for the lone striker role from here on in. Flanking that position, Martinez must decide how he juggles the talents of Gerard Deulofeu and the in-form Kevin Mirallas. Arguably, both could do a job in the support striker role, although with Ross Barkley to accommodate, Martinez looks to have ample options here. While a role on the flank looks likely for Deulofeu and Mirallas, Everton have Steven Pienaar as a mainstay on the left, meaning that we could be looking at just one starting role, with Aiden McGeady in contention out wide. All this and we haven’t even mentioned Steven Naismith, who has now scored four in his last five appearances. The teamsheet at Chelsea may not tell us all we need to know but it will hopefully shed some light on Martinez’s current thinking.

Mourinho’s rotation
Jose has seen both City and Arsenal suffer damaging first-leg home defeats in the Champions League and will surely be wary. The draw may well have been kinder to Chelsea but a midweek trip to Galatasaray will still provide a stern test and it remains to be seen if this is in Mourinho’s mind when he compiles his teamsheet for the weekend visit of Everton. The Toffees surely cannot be taken lightly – it’s not a fixture that lends itself to rotation. Even so, Jose may feel he has the options to mix things up – perhaps introducing Oscar and Mohamed Salah in attacking areas, while further preserving John Terry in defence, regardless of his availability. We will watch with interest.

Snodgrass’ performance
So often on the fringes of our squads, Norwich’s playmaker has timed a run of impressive displays with a period which finds the Canaries coming under renewed consideration from Fantasy managers. While Chris Hughton’s side are showing relegation form, their fixtures promote them in our thinking, not least because they offer that precious Gameweek 29 fixture at home to Stoke. Snodgrass is their key attacking prospect – their creative hub and set-piece guru. The Scot has produced some impressive numbers of late and this weekend’s Carrow Road meeting with Tottenham could well be the audition ahead of a flurry of transfer traffic.

Ince’s Role
We couldn’t have asked for more from Tom Ince on debut. A goal and an assist from the support striker role immediately flagged the England Under-21 star as a potential fifth midfielder option. We’ll be watching for his performance against United with interest, then, a match that may put him on the same pitch as the fading Fantasy star that is Adnan Januzaj. While the United man looks to be somehow struggling to win recognition from his manager, Ince has been immediately trusted with supplying the goals and assists to help preserve Palace’s Premier League status. Such faith from Tony Pulis could well translate to similar conviction from Fantasy managers.

Sherwood’s teamsheet
The Tottenham teamsheet at Newcastle demonstrated that Tim Sherwood is not afraid to make changes at the cost of established Tottenham assets. Christian Eriksen recent form has failed to cement him in his manager’s plans and he made way to the bench as the Spurs boss opted to bolster his central midfield with the muscle of Etienne Capoue, allowing Paulinho more freedom to join the attack. More significantly, Younes Kaboul’s return to fitness saw club skipper Michael Dawson drop to the bench, having made 25 consecutive league starts this season. We’ve been waiting for Dawson’s game time to come under pressure but, in truth, we were expecting the challenge to come from Vlad Chiriches. With the Romanian currently injured, though, Kaboul, at just 4.6, could well present a hugely attractive option for the run-in if we can be sure he’s cemented himself in Sherwood’s plans. The Spurs boss has left several big names at home ahead of tonight’s Europa League clash with FC Dnipro – Kaboul is amongst them – perhaps indicating that his fitness is being managed ahead of the weekend trip to Carrow Road.

The Cardiff options
With the Cardiff backline leaking goals at an alarming rate, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to have little option but to go on the attack. Their next two home matches with Hull this weekend and Fulham in Gameweek 29 look crucial to their prospects of beating the drop with encounters against Spurs, Everton and Liverpool scattered around this pair of fixtures. That Gameweek 29 clash with Fulham may also draw attention from Fantasy managers shopping in the budget bracket. Solskjaer has a number of players which could tempt short-term investment – certainly Wilfred Zaha and, to a lesser extent Craig Noone. We’re going to need plenty of convincing: while Zaha impressed on his debut, he can go missing in matches and Cardiff him need him to be pivotal in any potential recovery. Show some intent against Hull and we must just be tempted to go shopping in the Bluebirds’ roster come Gameweek 29.

The Jelavic & Long show
Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic are already fulfilling the expectations created by the £15 million laid down to acquire their services. The new strike partnership have found the net in their first three matches together and will surely fancy their chances of adding to their tally when they face the obliging Cardiff rearguard on Saturday. While Long is the cheaper option, Jelavic’s numbers on his arrival on Humberside are hugely impressive – our members need only dip into the player stats for the past few Gameweeks to assess how the Croatian stacks up against some of the league’s top performers. There’s just a chance, then, that Bruce has untethered a pairing that could not only find Hull snuggling safely into a top ten position, one of the duo may also fire their way into consideration for a treasured slot in our forward lines.

Yaya Sanogo a go-go?
Handed a shock starting role against Bayern last night, can we now expect the power and pace option handed to Arsene Wenger by the young Frenchman to be favoured over the “talents” of Olivier Giroud? Having impressed against Liverpool in the FA Cup, Sanogo was given 90 minutes last night, leaving Giroud on the timber for the duration ahead of the home clash with Sunderland. So what can we expect from Wenger on Saturday? Noises suggest that Giroud was simply being handed a rest but there’s obvious speculation, fuelled by off-field antics and countless missed opportunities on the pitch. Wenger may just have decided on Sanogo as true competition for the lone striker role, giving Giroud new impetus to produce. At just 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League game, we undoubtedly have to monitor the Sanogo situation further.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Schone is also on freekicks and is kinda OOP playing on the wing.
Blind will be OOP in midfield.
de Jong - the papers are torn as to whether he starts as the striker or in midfield. He's in bad form tho so wouldn't opt for him really.

Blind has pretty much become our key midfielder, although he can be a little defensive. Always a chance of a goal or assist. Schone tho is in great form. Take pretty much all corners and freekicks. Got a hattrick at the weekend with 2 pens. Schone is the best pick

I would disagree because if it didn't then you would see more strikers with massive runs of consecutive games they have scored in.

For the record, Ruud has the record with 10 in a row. Sturridge currently on 6.

I made a similar call at the start of the season when Sturridge was going for the most consecutive games scored in at the start of the season and pointed out the odds were against him to score again and sure enough he blanked that week.

Obviously that is not to say he will blank this week.

I am not disputing that and I agree that each game he has the exact same probability of scoring (assuming all things equal) as the previous game.

However, the point I am making is that the probability of the same event happening 10 times in a row is less than the probability of the actual event happening just once.

One in (two to the power of 10). But if you get 9 heads in a row, the chance of a tenth head is still one in two. To think otherwise is known as the Gambler's Fallacy.

Someone has pointed out that it doesn't exactly apply to a footballer's chance of scoring because the two games are not independent - the first game changes the state of the footballer's brain in subtle ways that we can never model or predict. But you have to construct a pretty weird story of what happens to his brain in order to predict that every successive game makes the chance of scoring lower than the last. Maybe it is something like the pressure of maintaining a record putting him off. But there's an equally plausible-sounding story you can construct about confidence, which makes it MORE likely that he will score again. It's completely intractable but in any case is not what you're getting at, which sounds a lot like Gambler's Fallacy.

Scoring goals in consecutive matches is a lot less predictable than a coin landing on heads or tails though.

Theres nothing to say he won't score next week but the odds on him scoring 7 games in a row are likely a lot lower than a coin landing on heads 7 times in a row though.

For one thing, Sturridge is a human and subject to the possibility of being injured at any point during the game, thereby ending his streak. The coin will never get injured.

Sturridge also has 11 people doing their best to stop him scoring. The coin's only opponent is gravity.

Also, Sturridge has possible loss of form to figure into the equation. The coin is an inanimate object so has no 'form' to lose.

I could go on but I think you get the picture.

Of course there are so many variables that any prediction is incalculable. But nonetheless there is a hypothetical probability that can be applied.

Chances of scoring in the next game is 1/X

Chances of scoring in 10 games in a row is 1/X(Y[variables])^10

The odds are against any striker in every week, but the odds do not increase against that striker just because they scored the prior week. They are independent episodes. On the whole, it is less likely that you will score in six consecutive weeks than it will be that you would score in five consecutive weeks, but that is just an accumulation of math.

If you flip a coin heads four times in a row, your chances of flipping heads in the fifth time remains 50%. As it would be in the sixth. And the seventh.

If your striker has the "ability" that provides him with a 40% likelihood of scoring a goal in a match. He has that same "ability" the next match, assuming no injuries, assuming no injuries to key teammates, assuming equal opposition. Now you obviously have variabilities in the opposition and the teammates from week to week. But if there are no injuries, you can't downgrade somebody just because "they are due to turn cold"

For simplicity sakes let us assume that Sturridge has 1 50% chance of scoring and a 50% chance of not scoring.

To calculate the likelihood he will score in 10 games in a row the calculation would be:

                  0.5 ^ 10 = 0.000976563

Are you saying that if you toss a coin 9 times and get heads every time, the tenth toss has a likelihood of 0.000000000009 of being a head? Because that is absolutely 100% wrong. The tenth toss is still 1 in 2 because the previous ones don't have any effect on it. That's the Gambler's Fallacy.

You're looking at the whole sequence, which the coin doesn't. Sturridge himself might though (as I talk about above). But which way it goes when he looks at the sequence is anyone's guess.

This is exactly how casino never loses, people will continue to toss the coin and at some point the player will have no cash left to make next toss and get a win.
As you say emotional influence can change the percentage either way, such as I am on a run, or I never score against this team.

While I agree that every time a coin is flipped there is a 50% chance of it being a head and that this does not change no matter how many times the coin is flipped.

I do believe you are being obstinate in refusing to accept that in this instance we are looking at a sequence of events and not a single event, hence the reason of 10 in a row is less than a probability of 0.5.

No. It's about WHEN you make the estimate. You're making it now before event 7 of the sequence of 7. That's completely different to making it BEFORE the sequence.

We're absolutely NOT looking at a sequence, because the first six goals of the sequence have already passed. Those ones are facts. We're looking now at just one event - the last one in the sequence. He's done the first six and the next one is the same as the first one.

Look at the next comment down.

I know how it feels, I've been there 🙂 Something about it doesn't feel right, I totally understand.

Here's one more way to look at it that might help. When you talk about the odds of a sequence of goals (let's say each one is 0.4 for the sake of argument), before you make the estimate, each one is 0.4. So the odds of all seven are

                              0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.0016384

But once the first one has been scored, it's no longer 0.4 - it's 1, because it's a fact. So the odds have become:

                              1.0 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.004096 (slightly better than before)

Then the second one goes in and that one changes from 0.4 to 1.0.

                              1.0 x 1.0 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4

Each time a goal goes in, the odds of the sequence get better because more of them have become facts and fewer of them are now uncertain. By the time you get to the last one, it's:

                              1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 0.4 = 0.4

Hope this helps. It helped me 🙂

I totally get what you are saying and I appreciate you taking time to explain it so well. If I still did not accept what you were saying I would not have said I did. 😀

However, I know there is something wrong with my thought process that I have no managed to reconcile and that is why it is not sitting right just now. I just have to figure out what the fault is now. 😉

No worries man. I'm pretty sure your thoughts are wrong in the same way that mine were some time ago.

Concentrate on what I'm saying in that last one - it's about goals becoming facts instead of uncertain events once they've gone in. That's what made it click for me.

It's all about WHEN you make the prediction. Predicting 10 heads in a row before you start flipping the coins gives you very, very long odds (1 in 2^10).

But once you've flipped nine heads, and you're asking about flipping ten in a row, you're only talking about one flip.

Same with Sturridge. The chances of him scoring 7 in a row 6 games ago was (for example) 1 in 0.4^7

Once he has scored the first one, you're talking about the next six games - 1 in 0.4^6. So here's how it goes, the odds of scoring 7 in a row as predicted in each gameweek if he scores in each:

                      GW1: 1 in 0.4^7
                      GW2: 1 in 0.4^6
                      GW3: 1 in 0.4^5
                      GW4: 1 in 0.4^4
                      GW5: 1 in 0.4^3
                      GW6: 1 in 0.4^2
                      GW7: 1 in 0.4^1

But saying it after 5 balls, the other number has same stat chance as every other ball

Nice one. The main reasons I went for Sturridge last week was he went well at the Cottage last time out and he was a major differential. I still see him being a differential this week, but just less so.
                Sturridge again for me.

                  Very easy. Go to comparison.
Click on player drop down, type in player. Go to adjacent tool, do the same thing.
Now click bar just below select last weeks. Same thing again.
                  Click compare.
                  Done.
                  Check it all out.

And now compare suarez over 6 weeks compared to RVP over 6 weeks.

Now compare their fixtures from GW29 onwards.

Now double-check which teams suarez had a big haul against.

Now do your gw29 suarez --> rvp transfer?

Poverty kills more people than wars and poverty is the greatest cause of physical violence in history. The continuous growth of mankind depends on human beings finding a solution. Before we romance about living in space age cities and traveling across the galaxy, we must first deal with our natural resources. Unfortunately, many are too ignorant to understand or ask the question what is being done about this. It's that attitude that allows corporations and government to continue, because they know that the rich can survive the problem while the rest will suffer.

MP reveals Jos Hooiveld is out of Saturday's game with an eye problem.

MP adds that there is "a possibility" of Dejan Lovren and Gaston Ramirez being in the squad at Upton Park.

                  Hows my team looking guys?

                  Szczesny (Davis)
                  Coleman Koscielny Shaw (Ward Bruce)
                  Hazard Yaya Lallana Eriksen (Pozuelo)
                  Negredo Suarez Sturridge

2 free transfers, 0.1 in the bank

This week - Eriksen to Ince
GW28 - Szczesny and Adebayor to Adrian/Mcgregor and Adebayor
                  GW29 Bruce to Olsson

That will leave me with 8(9 with Pozuelo?) players for Gw29, then Gw30 Adebayor to Aguero

Sound ok? Anybody do it any differently?

I'm looking to transfer two players in that have a game in GW29, this is my list of targets ranked from highest to lowest (based on current thinking):

                  #1 - Adebayor

                  #2 - Ince

                  #3 - Lallana

                  #4 - Cahill

I would ideally like to do J.Rod ---> Ade, but I have Nasty and Janujaz that need shifting urgently. On that basis, does it sound like a good idea to use my 2 FTs this week to do:

                  Nasty & Janujaz -----> Cahill & Ince?

Please note, I can't afford Cahill and Lallana.

I could afford Ivanovic, but I'm leaning towards Cahill based on his superior PPG mainly.

2 free's this week and no spare cash, trying to prepare for 28 & 29

                  Marshall , Mannone

                  Kolarov , Kos , Coleman , Ward , Collins

                  Silva , Januzaj , Mirallas , Barkley , hazard

                  RVP , Suarez , Negredo

                  Am thinking ...

                  Negredo , Januzaj > Lambert , Snodgrass

                  Any thoughts ?

It's still an easy game. I would keep all three, and then ditch one next week and one the week after. Swapping Negredo home to Stoke for Lambert away to WHU seems risky.

navas to lallana for my FT or wait till next week?

city are at home whereas soton have the hammers away who are looking tight at the back. on the other hand navas in not guaranteed minutes now with nasri back.

Yeah, I strongly considered, but I think there are a couple of defenders with better fixtures coming up at a similar price.

Eriksen likely to start this weekend?

                  If not, replacement?

Also have Hazard, Mata, Lallana and Noone

Wish I knew. I have him, and it's shredding my cerebral nodules trying to figure out what the likelihood of him starting will be. In a way, I'm starting to think that he's not worth having if it's that much trouble. Plus, I think Sherwood likes him out on the wing instead of in the hole behind Adebayor, which probably isn't the best scenario in regards to Eriksen's FPL returns. To simplify it all, if you have a player you're not sure will start games, maybe it's time to switch him out for someone who is not prone to riding the pine.

I meant to say modules instead of nodules. Anyways, the tough thing about getting rid of Eriksen are those two upcoming fixtures and the lack of blanks for Totty. Arrgggh... 'tis a toughie.

This is reason why I got him out a few weeks ago. I would also say even if he does start then if things are not going right for Spurs then Eriksen stands a greater chance of being sacrificed as he adapatable - i.e. Sherwood can change formation alot easier when a player can play in so many positions unlike Lennon / Townsend who seem to wing merchants - Spurs move from a 4-5-1 to a 4-4-2 or whatever.

Part of the problem is who to replace him with. There are about 5 somewhat reliable mids, and those guys are priced above him. The rest of the lot seem to offer little promise. Switch to Nolan, maybe, but then there's a blank GW 29 for one of your players. Swap him for Ince, and there's that realm of unpredictability that is attached to guys who just arrived in the league. I'll wait until Totty's Europa game is over and then make a decision about Eriksen.

Yeah, I think I will do that eventually, but its just a waste of a transfer at this point with all these teams missing games coming up. I'll keep the Yosh one more week and hope for the best!

My team this week, still have 2FT to use and £2.4m in the bank.

                  Where should these be used?:

                  Boruc (Mannone)
                  Williamson, Azpi, Koscielny (Coleman, Chester)
                  Hazard, Eriksen, Toure, Lallana (Pozuelo)
                  Dzeko, Suarez, Sturridge

-Looking ahead my defence is fine for afew more GW's.
-Eriksen's gametime has been dropping (but may need him for next GW when CITY blank)
-Pozuelo doesnt play which may cause a problem when he comes in from the bench next week/the week after during GW blanks?

so it looks like my plans post GW29 are coming down to one of these options

                  a) Azpi, Kolarov, Yaya, Nolan/Snodgrass

                  b) Azpi, Kompany, Yaya, Noone

                  c) Demel, Kompany, Yaya, Nolan/Snodgrass

                  d) Azpi Zaba, Silva, Nolan/Snodgrass

Unless I dump Mata post GW31
