Kieran Gibbs is out for Arsenal, though Olivier Giroud is likely to return to the XI. Southampton could be boosted by the potential return of Dejan Lovren against West Ham. Robbie Brady is ruled out again for Hull. Cardiff are set to be without Mark Hudson for the rest of the season, whilst Oussama Assaidi faces weeks on the sidelines for Stoke:

Arsene Wenger has ruled Kieran Gibbs out of Arsenal’s home encounter with Sunderland. The left-back has failed to recover from the hamstring problem that forced him off against Bayern Munich in midweek, though the Gunners boss has hinted at a first-team return for Olivier Giroud as part of his “refreshment plan for the weekend”.

Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that Dejan Lovren and Gaston Ramirez may return to Southampton’s squad for the weekend visit to Upton Park after stepping up their recoveries from ankle injuries. The Saints boss has ruled out defender Jos Hooiveld with an eye problem against the Hammers.

Gus Poyet has hinted he may leave Lee Cattermole out for Sunderland’s trip to Arsenal, with one eye on the upcoming Capital One Cup Final. Steven Fletcher is back in training for the Black Cats but is still lacking in match fitness – Poyet has yet to decide whether the Scot will be included for the Emirates clash.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes has revealed that winger Oussama Assaidi will be out of action for “at least a number of weeks” after damaging knee ligaments during the Potters’ training camp in midweek. There is positive news on defender Robert Huth, with Hughes confirming that the German has returned to training as he steps up his comeback after recent knee problems. Elsewhere, Andy Wilkinson and Matty Etherington are back in contention for the trip to the Etihad after showing no ill-effects to the injuries that had sidelined them up till now.

Pepe Mel has ruled Claudio Yacob out for the weekend through injury, and the midfielder joins striker Nicolas Anelka on the sidelines for the visit of Fulham. West Brom will be boosted by the return of a trio of players though, with Jonas Olsson, Stephane Sessegnon and Billy Jones all in contention to feature at the weekend after overcoming their respective injuries.

Hull defender Liam Rosenior could return for the trip to Cardiff after missing the last game with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, the club will assess both James Chester and Sone Aluko after their lengthy absences, whilst Steve Bruce is set to be without the services of Robbie Brady as he struggles with an ongoing groin problem.

Cardiff’s injury troubles have grown with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirming that club captain Mark Hudson is expected to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

Great so as soon as I drop Dzeko and bring in Ade he decides to go make himself a doubt for this weekend. Watch Dzeko rack up a hattie now just to rub it in. Hate this season.

Why wouldn't Dzeko score loads home to Stoke anyway? And you brought in someone away to Norwich who have kept 3 clean sheets in 4?

Hit a man whilst he's down why don't you 😆

My reasoning was more along the lines of taking out a rotation risk for a nailed on player. Also 2 blanks vs. 2 games coming up. Form comparison. Chance to make a profit on a rising player vs. losing some on a falling player.

        ....but get your point 😥

Yeah that's fair enough. I have Dzeko but think he's pretty nailed on to start home to Stoke so am giving him this one more game and then will ditch. You got the profit out if Ade though.

With Tottenham having beat Newcastle 4-0 at St James', do you really expect Tim to change his starting XI? That said, if you really want a Tottenham cover, I'd get Paulinho if it's a mid, but Adebayor is by far the best option.

Hehe, I'm indulging in some further tinkering currently - had a couple of gambles lined up that now seem too risky with a bit less Talisker in my system 😉

Won't be massive changes though - my tactics are basically to load up on the big boys for the first 3 weeks and then worry about the rest of the season after that.

4 Man City (to be transferred out in GW2)
          4 Liverpool
          4 Chelsea

And a smattering of Arsenal, Spurs and cheap filler.

If I were to put my pens down now and just go with it as-is I would be looking at:

Ruddy, Walker, Sterling, Gerrard, Sturridge, Suarez, Adebayor

I'm only going with one up front for Saturday - if he scores I'll probably keep Ade on the bench. Would be a nice dilemma to have though 🙂

I have and I am but not just because of the stats. Those stats are to be expected considering the way they both play

Pronouncing one as better than the other based on shot stats relies on the assumption that they convert chances at the same rate, an assumption that is not so weak over an entire season but varies considerably over shorter periods, at least partly due to form as well as luck. Pays to pay attention to that and I think Sturridge has the clear edge there at the minute.

But that's the point, one is putting the chances away and one isn't, it's an either/or thing and hitting the post is the wrong outcome. I used to go off shot stats alone too, and this path led me to Coutinho Mirallas Moses etc, none of whom can consistently shoot. Suarez is a better finisher but has his own ups and downs. My main lesson this season has been to include your own judgment of their ability to finish - something which varies between players and between times.

Yes, I 100% agree, and that's something I've also learnt this season. If you look at Suarez though, I don't think you can say he is off form and that he will continue not to score.

In terms of hitting the post, I see what you're saying, but it's not like he's blazing them over/wide. We are talking about a margin of a few cms. If those shots were slightly to one side, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

You also have to take into account that Suarez is creating a lot more chances.

Also worth talking about sample size.

It's 4 weeks, which also more or less reflects the whole season*, with one major exception: Goal conversion. If you think he has gone crap at finishing, then don't captain him.

*yes, there is a slight drop in key stats in terms of volume of shots, but we're still looking at an elite rate

Yeah I take all those points on board - he is an absolutely top 3 striker and will stay there for the rest of the season. It is just his conversion which has gone down which I'm sure is a temporary thing but happens, it's just about calling when it stops. Football is a game of really fine margins and I'm sure small psychological things can make a big difference. Like you I own both and am unsure which to captain, I'm thinking Suarez is much likelier to assist and Sturridge somewhat likelier to score. Anything could happen really.

I have two free transfers but don't want to make any changes for this GW. Feels strange to throw away a transfer, so maybe someone can give me some ideas. 0.3 in the bank:

    Boruc - (Mannone)
Azpilicueta - Koscielny - Kolarov (Ward - Olsson)
    Hazard - Y Toure - Cazorla - Lallana (Puncheon)
    Suarez - Sturridge - Adebayor

Thinking of GW 29 best i can come up with is Kolarov -> Fonte, but that's meh, esp. this GW. Any other clues?
