Another set of double Gameweek fixtures dropped into the schedule this week to further befuddle the Fantasy Football Scout community, with Newcastle, Arsenal, Swansea and Everton joining the Gameweek 31 party. We look back at the raft of hot topics this fixture change provoked, take a walk of shame by admitting our season faux pas and find time to meander down memory lane to revisit our favourite and most notorious World Cup moments. We also drop in on all the latest standings and ties in the community’s tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

While we’re all pre-occupied with bringing in new recruits for Gameweek 31, it also presents some tough choices regarding benching form players with just a single fixture. Irish Madrista asked whether Eden Hazard owners plan to oust the electrifying midfielder in favour of a double Gameweek player. Meanwhile, Rosola went one step further and asked which non-double gameweek players the community will be ditching. John Terry, Eden Hazard and Southampton keeper Artur Boruc are among those mentioned as “untouchables”.

Sergio Aguero has already being discussed as a key Gameweek 31 pick for many, although Innsie wonders if there are perhaps other options. His post comparing Aguero and Newcastle striker Loic Remy proved interesting and surprising reading. It’s a subject that surfaced again this evening, with Nate dropping in with another Sunday evening hot topic, talking up Romelu Lukaku’s claims for inclusion in our plans.

When it comes to midfield options, we find both West Ham’s Kevin Nolan and Sunderland’s Adam Johnson firmly on many a watchlist. The pair of mid-price contenders are vying for community’s affections and came under the microscope of Evilfuk this week, who looked closely at points per game as well as home and away statistics.

Elsewhere, Wednesday’s international friendlies gave the community a chance to reminisce about World Cups of yesteryear. Demel asked which was our favourite World Cup, with Colonel Wasabi nominating the 1978 Argentina tournament – his first chance to get his mits on a World Cup sticker album. Meanwhile, Rayne Wooney asked for opinion on the dirtiest World Cup team, with the Chile squad of the 1962 the stand out selection for Portsmouth Bubbeljet.

Earlier in the week, Giggs Boson invited some community purging as he quizzed us on our most shameful decision this season. Parmtree was among those in confessional mood, openly admitting to his Nani purchase and finding back-up from Granville. Mark also chirped up with another mention of his failure to adopt Aaron Ramsey. He’s still losing sleep over that.

Finally, if you’re dabbling with your Ultimate Fantasy Premier League Wildcard right now, be sure to check out Archie’s superb analysis of the weekend fixture breakdowns. Brilliant stuff.

The Community Tournaments

With a score of 67, Irina’ss emerged as the winner of Gameweek 28’s Scout Picks Challenge, which is loosely based on our very own Scout Picks and has been created by @ocprodigy. The picks themselves finished a credible fourth with 64 points this week.

In TorresMagic‘s Leagues, Intranisigent topped Last Man Standing where 20 managers got eliminated leaving 95 to move on. Sara Oxyzoglu scored best in Millionaire Club, where only 9 managers survived as 44 went broke. In addition, his FPL Open first round draw is available here.

ENR, Bootsy, Jonty, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17 and Koneheads were the league leaders going into the Gameweek 29 in In Tommy We Trust’s All Things competitions.

Ahead of Gameweek 29, Gaz Downright continued to tighten his grip on first place in the Fantasy Football Scout’s Moderators and Contributors.

The Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, saw no changes in the top spots with Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continuing in first place in the competition’s Sky and Metro leagues respectively and Jonty retaining the FPL lead.

Sorry for the late reply, folks. Had to be away from keyboard for a while.

Thanks for the response. I see Meyler made it to the scoresheet last night. Haven't seen much of Meyler and thought Colback is the best 4.2m option with the limited funds I have. May have to do a comparision between the two and weigh out the fixtures as well.

I think the better question for me to ask would be should I lose Sturridge for Aguero/Lukaku. Sigh, it's been a massive headache but I think I'll need to weigh out the differences and their fixtures.

I'm also damn tempted to get Aguero but Lukaku would settle a lot of things, giving me the extras to stay solid in midfield and defence areas.

Gerrard if you're looking strong to win your mini leagues and have suitable money on it. Liverpool do enough going forward for Gerrard to get consistent points given his set piece duties so is a 'safe' pick despite his cost.

If you're wanting to be a bit more risky then go the other option. That said, keeping Lallana could be a safe option in itself if you're protecting a lead due to his high ownership

Gerrard decent schedule rest of season, 2 dgw's upcoming, and is the Red Yaya ... always finds a path to the points.

Lallana's great, but SOT have 0 dgw's and SOT don't have much to play for, really.

All stats per 90 apart from the bottom two:

    Stat Silva Toure

    Touches - Final Third 44.78 19.27
    Touches - Penalty Area 5.1 2.13
    Chances 2 1.73
    Chances Created 3.95 1.06
    Successful Corners 1.03 0
    Big Chances 0.49 0.2
    Shots - Six Yard Box 0.18 0.08
    *Goals From Direct Free-kick 0 4
    **Goals From Penalties 0 3

*Nobody apart from Yaya this year, has scored 4 direct free kicks in a season from since my data starts (3 seasons ago).

**City have had one penalty whilst Aguero has been on the pitch (1231 minutes), but 3 whilst Aguero has been off (1021 minutes)

Ultimately Yaya has benefited from Aguero's injury, stepping up for penalties: 3 goals = 15 points + 3 bonus points from those games combined.

Furthermore we can infer Silva has suffered slightly in his number of assists due Aguero's absence due to other striker's inferior goal conversion rate:

Player Shots SoT Goals Sh Acc. G Con.%
    Aguero 70 34 15 48.6 21.4
    Nergredo 61 24 9 39.3 14.8
    Dzeko 67 20 7 29.9 10.4
    Jovetic 13 6 1 46.2 7.7

I estimate from this that Silva has been denied 2-4 assists or 6-16 points inc. Bonus Points.

If Aguero was fit all season I estimate Yaya would have a 5.64ppg and Silva 5.71-6.29ppg

Conclusion: With Aguero on the pitch, Silva is the better option. Otherwise, Yaya.

I've had SIlva all season and I'm going with Yaya, rest of season.

People have tried making the statistical comparison you've just done ALL SEASON LONG, and still Yaya has smacked everyone down (while Silva underperforms FPL wise)

Yaya's an anomaly, and yes he "shouldn't" be achieving what he has. Apparently this doesn't mean anything ... we have been waiting for a regression in Yaya's FPL numbers ALL SEASON LONG, and it never comes.

We (Silva owners) have been waiting for his FPL numbers to catch up to his attractive stats. It never happens.

One is underperforming, and one is achieving in spite of his seemingly unfavorable stats.
If you want to trust the common sense that hasn't worked all season, cross your fingers.

Something I posted on the last page:
Yaya was scoring points even when Aguero played 90min every weekend. He may not be on penalties with Aguero on the pitch but consider that
      - yaya can still score an open-play screamer
      - he also takes free kicks
      - and Aguero is likely to be subbed off after 60 minutes, when MC are up by 2 or 3 goals... if there are any penalties in the last 1/4 or so of the match, step up, Yaya Toure

They're both great options. Disregarding stats and figures, Silva's been playing quite well all season and always a threat, he could've perhaps gotten more points.
IMO considering the 3 DGWs everyone should have 3 from Aguero, Yaya, Silva & Zabaleta / Kompany

Also I have to disagree with this part:

"Furthermore we can infer Silva has suffered slightly in his number of assists due Aguero's absence due to other striker's inferior goal conversion rate:"

consider that SIlva was injured gw's 4-6 and 11-15.
Aguero PLAYED in all of those matches, but one in GW6

Silva played gw16-current, with only 1 absence
... but Aguero has only played 73 minutes of those 12 matches

.... so it's not really good statistics to infer anything about Silva/Aguero's existing stats suffering this season, since it's a 5-6 game sample group.

Yaya may have scored 3 PK's, but how do you account for the other 10 goals? Ten!
At some point, 3 goals from direct free kicks turns from Improbable Yaya to something more like CR7 or Gareth Bale ... some guys just have the stuff

Am sure this has been asked before but who are the near essentials for the dgw? I would think
    - atleast 1 pool attacker
    - 1 everton def....and possibly lukaku
    - aguero/ silva/yaya
    - Arsenal attacker...a derby followed by a good home game

SaS are the only ones I'd call essential. Maybe Baines

Suarez is the only absolute essential and most will captain him.

This team ready to rock? Have taken a -4 this week.

    Boruc
    Azpilicueta - Kolarov - Ward
    Nolan - Oscar - Lallana - Mata
    Aguero - Lukaku - Suarez

    Davis -- Demel - Olsson - Pozuelo

Next week thinking Oscar and Lallana out for Yaya and AJ. Thoughts?

      I went with B).
Man City will be out of Europe by next week and there will only be the EPL title to play for, so hopefully they will be pulling out all the stops. It may be wrong, but we'll have to see.

Plan was to play my WC this week.. rather than activate it yesterday i decided to just do Mirallas and Adebayor to AJ and Aguero for -4. now that i look at my team

    Boruc (Davis)
    EVRA BARDSLEY Ivanovic (Ward Olsson)
    MATA AJ Hazard Lallana (Snoddy)
    SUAREZ AGUERO STURRIDGE
    0.0 in the bank

Do i really need to play my WC or should i just take another hit next week(Ivanovic + Lallana to Baines/Sterling or Demel/Yaya or similar)

u shld wc this week. future dgw are not nearly as attractive and even if u keep the wc for then are u going to load up ur team with palace villa etc. the only guys u would want long term are city and eve and sun, which have a dgw on gw31 too. so u can prepare both dgw at the same time and use the remaining transfers to get in a few other dgw-ers.

losing 8 points from hits is not worthy..plus u will get in yaya at a higher price. not to mention u could play baines this week if u wc. The only real negative is that u may have to sell lallana who has a good fixture.

In two minileagues I'm chasing a team that has Suarez and Sturridge. I have JRod, Suarez, RVP. Although I should be able to get JRod -> Remy, does it still mean I should wildcard before the DGW? Surely I'm in too much danger to fall too far behind already.

    Mannone (marshall)
    Coleman fonte azpi (ward bruce)
    Hazard lallana mata punch (zaha)
    Ade suarez studge
    4.0, 2FTs

Final piece of my GW31 wildcard jigsaw. There doesn't seem much in it but you know how these things drive you mental!

Zab & Bardsley or Kolarov & Azi? (I've already got Azi & keeping Cahill).

Zab will almost certainly play more games than Kolarov but Kolarov has more explosive potential (if also a propensity for one pointers) and Bardsley has three games more to play than Azi but even still Chelsea are likely to get more clean sheets than Sunderland before the end of the season.

    What you reckon chaps?

B lukaku (and invest 4.0 in mid and def)
