After analysing the sides with Strong upcoming fixtures yesterday, the second part of our weekly assessment focuses on those with menacing-looking opponents. The caprice of the schedule dictates that London teams feature heavily, whilst Southampton also have a couple of road trips which are likely to cause concern:

Tottenham

tottenham30

A gutless performance (to paraphrase Tim Sherwood) was rewarded with humiliation at Stamford Bridge and made it just one goal in three games for Spurs. A sudden fall in form allied with a downturn in fixtures is most unwelcome and the straight-talking manager will be hoping his side shows some character as he looks to navigate games againt Arsenal, Southampton and Liverpool in the next three. With no double Gameweek to garnish their appeal, it’s perhaps no surprise that Tottenham players are amongst the most transferred-out this week.

At the back, Michael Dawson’s hamstring problem adds to an injury list that also includes Vlad Chiriches and Danny Rose, suggesting Tottenham’s resilience will be severely undermined ahead of these dangerous games. The midfield lineup has become rather unpredictable lately, with Christian Eriksen the main source of woe for Fantasy managers, and many will use these fixtures as the trigger to rid themselves of the headache. Emmanuel Adebayor is a slightly trickier question, but with double Gameweek assets shrieking for attention, his recent form blip and these fixtures mean that many will be minded to part ways with the Togolese striker, at least temporarily, until the fixtures brighten from Gameweek 33.

Arsenal

arsenal30

Last night’s draw in Munich saw Arsene Wenger’s side leave the Champions League and, whilst they will be frustrated, it may be for the best – the last thing they require over the coming weeks is another distraction. Arsenal will need all their focus on a schedule that will likely decide their season as they prepare to face a couple of title rivals plus Tottenham and Everton in the next four weeks. A double Gameweek that includes a home fixture against Swansea scarcely compensates for such a daunting trial and many Fantasy managers are preparing to offload their Gunners assets in favour of players with paths of lower resistance.

The Arsenal defence has been a prolific source of clean sheets and bonus points but Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker et al will be hard pressed to maintain their level of returns against this opposition. Mesut Özil’s injury accelerates his slide from Fantasy Watchlists but in truth, with form and fixtures against him, few Fantasy managers would have been interested at this point. Olivier Giroud is a different matter, though. A brace against Everton in the FA Cup continued the Frenchman’s resurgent form and presents his owners with a conundrum, though the upcoming schedule is as tough a test of the old “form over fixtures” maxim as we’re ever likely to see. Finally, Aaron Ramsey is also worthy of note; the early-season Fantasy bandwagon has been injured since Boxing Day but reports suggest he may be back in contention for the double Gameweek. These fixtures probably make it unwise to bring the Welsh prodigy straight back into our midfields but if he comes through unscathed and in form, he will be a strong contender for Arsenal’s splendid run-in, starting around Gameweek 35.

Fulham

fulham30

Felix Magath clearly had a tough task on his hands regardless of fixtures, with his squad looking bereft of both confidence and cohesion. Failing to take points from relegation rivals Cardiff was a big blow and his job is even harder now. The next six Gameweeks contain games against Man City, Everton and Tottenham and few would bet on the Cottagers picking up anything from those encounters. Few Fulham players have darkened the doors of Fantasy Watchlists this term, let alone made it into actual squads but new Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou raised eyebrows as an interesting prospect, arriving off the back of 17 goals in 19 appearances for Olympiacos. These fixtures, plus the lack of a double Gameweek, will surely quell the interest even his most ardent admirers, pending further evidence of points potential.

BE WARY OF

Cardiff
Ole Gunnar Solksjær’s team may have boosted their chances of survival with a crucial win over Fulham but a trip to Everton and visit of Liverpool will test the Bluebirds’ resilience. The going eases up after that but right now it’s hard to recommend many Cardiff players for Fantasy purposes. At the back, Steven Caulker’s owners may have to rely on further attacking returns from the goalscoring centre-half and, whilst Ben Turner has found his way back to the first team, his owners will be inclined to bench. Further up the field, Craig Noone, at 4.3, looks like a bargain but will find it hard to attract investment over the next few weeks.

Hull
Only Sunderland fans and the cold-hearted would begrudge the hard-working Tigers their place in the FA Cup semi-finals. A spirited win over the Black Cats showed that their form has not tailed off as the season wears on, and with a decent looking double Gameweek 31 coming, many Fantasy managers are eyeing up their kindly-priced assets. The fixtures surrounding the double counsel caution, though – with Man City beforehand and Stoke, Arsenal and a blank in the following four, returns look limited to the double Gameweek and the visit of Swansea a couple of weeks later. James Chester seems to be back in the first-team following his latest injury whilst Nikica Jelavic is in good form – both offer decent value options but few Fantasy managers are likely to load up on the Tigers.

Southampton
Saints players featured heavily in many managers’ plans for dealing with last week’s decimated fixture list and most of us will own at least one of Mauricio Pochettino’s players. Home games against Norwich, Newcastle and Cardiff in the upcoming five look promising but the downside is trips to Tottenham and Man City, with the White Hart Lane encounter arriving in Gameweek 31, at a time when 10 teams play twice. Carrying one or two Saints players through these stern tests could be manageable but anyone who took the plunge with a triple-up may now take the opportunity to capitalise instead on double Gameweek options.

True, but Ki seems highly unlikely to score regardless of their opponent. Even if Sterling plays 25 minutes, I'd rate his chances of a goal or assist as equal to Ki's.

Just to make sure I've got this right:

In the CL game, if I have Raul Garcia as my current captain, but I also have Ibra, Ronaldo and Aubameyang still to play (all on different days). I essentially have 3 shots at improving on my captain score, right?

I guess I'm asking - can I change my captain more than once in a gameweek in the CL game?

Going to be weird next season, Suarez will likely be priced out of the game as RVP was this year.

Would anyone pay 13.0 for him as a starting price?

12-13 definitely, 14 i'd say no! RVP looked to have peaked last year, especially given his age whereas Suarez looks like he is at the peak of his powers. If Liverpool got CL football and bought a solid LB, CM and LR/RW they would be quite the force....although alternatively maybe the amount of extra games would royally f**k up his ability to consistently deliver.

In summary, yes, although only if decent summer signings are made

I started a new team 2 weeks back and I am paying that much for him 😀
You can get an OK side even after paying that much for a player who can produce that much pts, but can he perform like this year? Is there any history where a player has performed very well in 2 successive seasons? Maybe CR7 was last?

13.0 he's worth considering, 14.0 (Which I kinda think is more likely) is probably prohibitive, but it really depends on other players' pricing and new players in the league.

He is "relatively" nailed. I have seen every game under BR, he has used different formations quite a bit this season; not only to find his best team but his best team to play the opposition. His first obstacle where I was very impressed was half time against Villa at home. We were out played first half. A change in formation was key. In that game we had to accommodate Sterling Coutinho sturridge and Suarez, so we changed. It worked.
Man U away I expect a ridiculously quick Sterling to come on against tired legs, not to start. But that doesn't necessarily mean Coutinho will start because he has Mata syndrome.
For the double I honestly expect Sterling to start both. Along with Mourinho he is the most interestingmanager to observe. The way he sets out is brilliant.
Prediction, 25-30 against man u and getting assist.
80-90 for both games in the double. With a lot of points.

I usually like to make up my own mind, but needing some input for this week. Mata to Yaya/Silva this week for -4, or give Mata one last chance against Liverpool? If Mata were to show signs of life and I decided I wanted to keep him, I could still get Yaya or Silva next week by upgrading Lallana and downgrading Snodgrass.

I am keeping Lallana, especially if the choice is him or mata. lallana is the guy that soton flows through and is incredibly dangerous, much like watching hazard...even when he just gets his 2 points you can see the potential for explosion.

do you ever say that about Mata in the current United offense? exactly.

That's why this week is Mata's last chance of showing he's worth a place in my GW31 team. Also, his 5 PPG since joining United is the same as Lallana, and United has decent fixtures after the DGW. Not to mention, Mata has a DGW...

Could just be a matter of Mata needing time to gel with Rooney and RVP though. That's the only reason I'm thinking of giving him 1 more week. Price changes may help me make up my mind in the end. If it looks like Mata will fall before the deadline and whichever City player I decide on is going to rise, I'll probably switch this week. I'll need every 0.1 I can get to work Aguero in later.

Money is not a concern (right now anyway).

    Silva or Yaya?

The stats say that silva has been much better:
    Pen Touches: 21 vs 10
Shots In Box: 5 vs 4
Shots on Tar: 2 vs 3
    Chances Cre: 16 vs 4 (!!)

But I still can't bring myself to believe that Yaya won't outscore Silva.

Silva has been wasteful to say the least, is there any reason to believe this will change?
Any City fans have some observations to add from recent matches?

those stats would lead me to yaya even more
if silva is getting lots of touches he must not be doing anything with them, mis control poor passing etc.
also if he is creating chances then others arent making them goals, again could be poor passes making chances harder or just crap finishing. obviously yaya prefers to shoot

Yaya is definately the more clinical shooter (especially this season).

With Aguero back on the pitch you have to think more of those chances will end up in the net though.

Silva has been frustrating, both as a fantasy owner and as a fan. He should have 3 or 4 more goals than he does, easily. He's not as bad a shooter as Dzeko, but he has missed several quality chances. You gotta think he'll get it together though, says the hopeful City fan.

      Liverpool's formation.
Southampton game was just one game. Tactics have changed vastly this season for the mighty ones, I don't think the last game was a sign of things to come regularly, but on certain occasions. Have a look at the many previous adjustments and discuss why they happened and which formations are likely to happen against which teams. This obviously, and more importantly, would affect line up.

When DGWs let you down, it's often because they involve lesser teams and if you sign on their players then you end up with a rubbish squad for the week after.

This one feels different because so many of the top teams and top players are involved.

Not a question as such, but a big talking point is which budget midfielder under £6m to select to GW31, that frees up funds for SAS, Yayas & Gerrards.

Questions about whether Sterling's place is guaranteed. Sissoko having a bandwagon despite being rubbish for 12 months. Who else.. Shelvey? Mark Noble? Januzaj? Colback and Ki as cash saving long term picks.

Are the Chelsea players worth keeping over the next few weeks considering they have no DGW?

Hazard and Terry could be easily replaced by Yaya and Baines for example, giving you more games for your buck.

Serious question... although I would love it if you answered my previous question... 😉

Do you think it is worth it to lose Lallana for a DGWer?

So'ton don't really have anything to play for, but they do have some good fixtures to come, and Lallana is obviously keen to put himself in the shop window for a starting place at the World Cup...

      Thanks

I've got a question for each of you.

      Here's Mark's question -

If you knew your rivals (Granville's) captain choice each week, would you choose the same captain as him each week (damage limitation) or would you try to captain someone else (to make up ground)?

      And here's Granville's question -

We know that Chelsea's defence has been solid recently, would you advise doubling up on Chelsea's defence for gameweek 32, until the end of the season, as they have very favourable fixtures after this?

I should say that my mini league leader, who I'm 48 points behind captains Suarez every week, which is why I asked that question. He even captained Suarez for his blank and vice captained Sturridge! It's the same every week!

Your mini league rival sometimes goes two or three game-weeks without making any transfers, which suggests that he is sometimes too busy or too far from his computer to look at his team.

He probably didn't bother to check whether Liverpool actually had a game in GW29 and just continued on auto-pilot. Or possibly he might have thought that one of his other players would have been promoted to captain (as used to happen before vice-captains were introduced).

He's a die hard Liverpool fan, even has a tattoo of it. So he did know Liverpool didn't have a game that week.

If you're worried about Sterling's game time, then Livermore might be just as good as him for the dgw, but if you're thinking long term Sterling is probably still better even if he only starts half the time.

Any other week it'd be an easy decision for Yaya. But City may get run ragged chasing the ball for 90 minutes, then to come back to England Thursday morning and have to play an away match at Saturday noon means it's difficult to predict what tempo City will have for that Hull match.
