Liverpool move to four points off the top with an emphatic win at Old Trafford thanks to a couple of Steven Gerrard spot-kicks and a goal from Luis Suarez. Elsewhere, the north London derby was settled by the tie’s fastest ever strike – a Tomas Rosicky thunderbolt on just 72 seconds. Three points and a clean sheet on their travels for both Liverpool and Arsenal, then, as the Premier League title race heats up:

Suarez Repays the Faith
After both Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku failed their armband backers on Saturday, the pressure was on Luis Suarez to produce in Liverpool’s Sunday trip to Old Trafford. With a tough tie on the cards and some emerging alternatives, Suarez was far from the automatic captaincy contender last week and garnered just 18% votes in the Captain Poll – yet again, though, he rose to the occasion by grabbing a goal (and, apparently, soon-to-be-awarded assist) in the 3-0 rout. Whilst Daniel Sturridge had temporarily threatened to usurp the Uruguayan, Brendan Rodgers’ switch to a diamond formation in the last two matches and field the pair as a front two has swung the momentum back in Suarez’ favour. Once the assist is added in the FPL game, Suarez is also likely to receive a couple of bonus points and will then have outscored Sturridge by 26 points to six in the last two matches, strengthening his credentials once again ahead of the double Gameweek.

Gerrard Racks up the Points Again
Three penalties awarded to Liverpool in one match – at Old Trafford, no less – and there could have been more. There is no doubt that Steven Gerrard is benefiting from Liverpool’s direct and attacking philosophy, with the Reds now boasting double figures for penalties awarded. Even after missing the third (and let’s not forget that he handed one to Sturridge earlier in the season) Gerrard’s two goals and maximum bonus took his average to 5.8 points per game – joint fourth with David Silva in midfield and bettered only by Yaya Toure of those likely to play twice in the double Gameweek. With an ownership sitting at 11%, the Liverpool captain could prove a decisive choice in the season run-in.

Liverpool Defence Tightening Up
One clean sheet does not necessarily make a great defence, but Liverpool have always had it in them, but for a few errors. The Reds have now come through their last two league games unscathed with 3-0 away wins at Southampton and United – clearly, the midfield diamond seems to benefit the Merseysiders’ potential at both ends of the pitch and with Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger now fit and back in the starting XI, Liverpool are finally starting to replicate the resolve which harvested three successive clean sheets at the start of the season.

Van Persie’s Star Fading Fast
Still bearing the weight of the highest price tag in FPL, Robin Van Persie will have given many of his owners food for thought with his latest ineffective display. For all his pre-match statements of intent, the Dutch international looked uninterested and failed to create anything of merit in a home tie against United’s bitter rivals – the sort of game he used to thrive in and could almost always be relied upon to bring home the points. With the double Gameweek deadline ticking down, it’s a sign of the times that just over 200 Fantasy managers have drafted in Van Persie for United’s pair of fixtures so far – the out-of-sorts Dutchman’s owners have a real quandary, now, though many will likely hand him a final stay of execution and reassess the situation once the double is over.

Rosicky Relishing a First Team Run
Following his Gameweek 27 strike against Sunderland, Tomas Rosicky notched his second goal of the season in memorable style with a powerful match winner against Spurs. The midfielder has sat on the periphery for much of the season at the Emirates, but with injuries accumulating Arsene Wenger has turned to the Czech international as a source of attacking creativity. Aaron Ramsay, Mesut Özil and Jack Wilshere all set to miss the double, making the 5.5-priced Rosicky a decent budget differential with less than 1% ownership.

Arsenal Backline Grinds out Another Clean Sheet
Some tough fixtures will have deterred many from investing in Arsenal but with yesterday’s north London derby producing the Gunners’ 13th shout out of the season, many may look to hold onto Per Mertesacker and co. The upcoming schedule is by no means easy – aside from a home clash with Swansea, Arsene Wenger’s side square up to Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton in the next three Gameweeks but if they are to emerge from this difficult run with their title challenge intact, defensive discipline will be key.

I am also curious about this, I brought him last week because he's cheap and allowed me to get the likes of Yaya Toure in. I was considering playing for the DGW but no idea why he was dropped. I thought he was a key player for Sunderland.

My TV is shocking so this is the WC team I have come up with.

    McGregor (Boruc)
    Coleman, Williamson, Bardsley (Ward, Shaw)
    Silva, Gerrard, Sissoko, Ki/Hazard
    Sturridge, Lukaku, Suarez (c)

Probably going to go with Hazard over DGW Ki but Ki is still going to be good value for the remainder of the season imo.

Yeah, already have Hazard but will only lose 0.3m on him if I get rid for a week. Could be worth it given the number of pens Gerrard gets these days!!

Delph is just because I'd only have 4.3m available, he has a DGW and I'd already have 3 SUN if making the planned moves. Could switch to Ki and Perhaps get Vlaar or someone else instead of Bardsley.

I'm sure this subject has been covered in depth already, but surely by FPL changing the Suarez assist, they are opening a whole can of worms? Since it means they are able to change errors which have been made, but will only change their decision if the player in question has sufficient ownership.

Moreover, it would have been fair enough if they had added the assist within the one hour deadline after the game. But the inconsistencies in decisions made by FPL throughout the season have been pretty ridiculous; as contradictions are constantly being made. Given that, I don't see how this decision to award Suarez the assist should be allowed to follow different regulations to other clear incorrect decisions which have been made.

For example, FPL awarded goals for the Terry 'goal' against Everton or the Bony 'goal' against Liverpool, but would you not call that an error which should also be rectified?. Since, just like with the Suarez assist, FPL have realised that they have contrasting and dissimilar data to OPTA, yet FPL did not correct these errors, even though these ‘goals’ have thereafter been awarded to the different players by OPTA.

Furthermore, this is only one example of the type of errors which have been made by FPL, there have been numerous non- assists and assists which have been not awarded and even awarded in some cases. However, the only consistency which remained throughout these decisions was that they were not changed after the one hour deadline. Hence, this leads back to my first question, with FPL changing the Suarez assist after the deadline, FPL have once again contradicted any rules which they have put into place.

Adminstrative error in Suarez's case.. Judgmental error in Terry/Bony etc. There was no doubt over the suarez assist. was just an oversight. move on. If ud captained him you'd be pisd you dint get the points.. trust me

Absolutely the rules clearly state that points will not change after Opta have marked them as final and they will not enter into any discussion around the statistics used etc but now they feel that this one does need to be changed? As you say there have been mistakes made in the past that weren't changed due to the closing of the data. Suarez definitely should have been credit with the assist but if they are going to have points amendment deadlines then they have to stick to them as now people will refer to these point changes as a precedent when other mistakes are made.

    Mann
    Coleman Flannagan Ivanovic

I'd was torn between getting Johnson/Skrtel over Flannagan, but considering his price it's a worthy gamble I reckon. I also wanted to swap Mata for Silva but thought it was more important to get Sturridge, so swapped for Nolan instead.

Good luck with the Silva pick, I hope it doesn't backfire on me!

Ok....I have managed to swallow yesterdays result and it still hurts. It's not so much losing to Liverpool (although that doesn't help), but it was the manner United went down. United have no identity. I refuse to point all blame on our defence cause the midfeild did nothing to help them.

I don't think you can play all 4 of Adnan, Mata, RVP and Rooney in the same side in a game like that, they weren't interested in tracking back and against a side like Liverpool its a recipe for disaster. Hats off to Liverpool, they totally deserved the 3 points.....they should have had another pen with the Fellani incident, but the 3rd pen (sturridge) was a dive IMO. It could have been 4 or 5.

I have been trying to urge people to give David Moyes time but now I am begining to think that he is out of his depth. I was under whelmed when he was first appointed but thought that we had to give him at least 2 seasons. But even I am swaying, who could have predicted a fall from grace of this magnitude for United?!?!?! Can you trust Moyes with a warchest of 100-150 million as quoted? I just think that the footballing landscape is changing, maybe we need a manager in the mould of Klopp to take us forward into a new era.

How much patience will the board have with this under achieving manager, after all.....we are the champions and there is still quality in the squad. But the young players brought in to take United forward (Anderson, Nani, Zaha, Valencia, Cleverley, Smalling, Jones) need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves do they deserve to wear the badge cause they don't seem to have the belly for the fight!

So....any thought? Do we think that Moyes is out of his depth?

That was a pretty bizarre change I am guessing he thought back to when United got battered by City and Fergie said he had wished he had made changes to keep the score down instead of try to still go for it at 3 down and finish up make things even worse.

Damage limitation. In fact he should have done that Rio sub earlier.

His reaction to the game was abysmal. Change should have come immediately after the 2nd penalty if not at half time. Instead he waited until the 75th minute to give Liverpool something to think about.

This season was always going to be tricky no matter who came in. You would expect to see performances start to improve from here on. Investment was always needed even if Fergie stayed on his ability to drag the team along was incredible but even he would have wanted to strengthen over the summer and without the changes the improvements would no doubt have been better but that isn't only Moyes fault Gill moving out at the same time as Fergie was always going to make things even harder.

Moyes should be given until Christmas to show a real improvement in performance if there is none then I would imagine the board will start to get itchy fingers as they move into the Jan WC. I find it high unlikely he will get moved on much before that.

At Everton, his seemingly innate caution in the transfer windows, admittedly with limited funds, always left the impression that a more positive approach would have given far better results.

The result of his thoroughness and rigour though was that when he did sign a player it usually turned out to be of exceptional value (Cahill, Arteta, Baines, Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Fellaini). I've included Felllaini as he played well up front for Everton and when they sold him it was for nearly double thanks to Moyes.

Utd though are a huge club compared to Everton, and with both Fergie and David Gill going together with the new overcautious manager's arrival, the summer transfer window was always likely to be a disaster.

He panicked signing Fellaini after failing with other targets, and after that and his dreadful start, the January window was always going to be difficult.

I think he's just not used to dealing in a totally different market of top players for big fees and needed guidance on how to adapt or bring similar thoroughness and detailed planning to that market.

If all the speculation is right and the players have little or no confidence in him then his position now must be near untenable.
