Robin van Persie steps up his rehabilitation from a knee injury. Arsenal have a number of doubts for tonight’s clash with West Ham, who are sweating over the fitness of Kevin Nolan. Elsewhere, Alan Pardew explains his recent formation change and Mark Hughes heaps praise on Stoke’s in-form Marko Arnautovic:

Van Persie Edges Nearer Comeback

The United forward posted a video update on his progress from a knee injury on his official Facebook page to suggest he could be poised to return before the end of the season.

The Scout Says: After returning from injury back in January, Van Persie racked up four goals and an assist in seven league appearances and also fired a Champions League hat-trick against Olympiacos. Stretchered off towards the end of the 3-0 win over the Greek outfit, he was pencilled in for a return to action at the end of April – coinciding with a very favourable couple of weeks for David Moyes’ side. A Gameweek 36 home clash against Norwich is followed by the visit of Sunderland and Hull in Gameweek 37, and with Wayne Rooney still struggling due to a toe problem, the Dutchman’s potential return could prove timely for both United and Fantasy managers if his rehabilitation keeps on schedule.

Gunners’ Injury Concerns Rise

Arsene Wenger had much to discuss on the injury front during yesterday’s pre-match conference. The Arsenal boss conceded he has a number of worries for tonight’s home clash with West Ham, including a certain Welsh midfielder:

“We have plenty of uncertainties for muscular problems and fatigue. Who could be available who was not in the squad on Saturday? Maybe Rosicky and Koscielny – we’ll have to test him definitely today. The main uncertainties are Monreal who had to come off with a dead leg. Podolski had a little [muscle] problem but I think he will be alright. Then there is Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ramsey (both muscle tightness). They are the main problems.”

The Scout Says: Judging by images taken from the Gunners’ first-team training later in the day, Wenger may have been slightly cautious in his assessment. Ramsey, Koscielny and Podolski were all pictured taking part in the action, raising hopes of their participation ahead of a favourable run of five matches for the north London side. Over 25,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers drafted Ramsey in after he returned from injury last weekend – with Hull, Newcastle, West Brom and Norwich all still to follow, his 19% of FPL owners will be hoping his 113-minute run-out against the Latics hasn’t taken its toll too much.

Nolan Worry for Hammers

The Hammers may have to do without their skipper for this evening’s Emirates trip. Speaking to the press yesterday morning, Sam Allardyce went on to reveal:

“Kevin Nolan is our problem at the moment. He came off with a hamstring against Liverpool, obviously that’s one that we have to be very careful about. It’s unusual for Kevin to sustain a muscle injury, I think it’s the first of his career, but we’ll be very careful about how we handle him. Kevin is going to desperately want to play, so we’ll probably wait until tomorrow to see how he is.”

The Scout Says: Somewhat surprisingly, Nolan is still owned by over 11% of Fantasy managers as we head into the final four Gameweeks. After producing three sets of double-figure displays in four matches over February, he’s since embarked on a run of six appearances without a goal or return. A possible absence tonight may convince many to part company, with a move to Christian Eriksen looking an obvious swap ahead of a run which sees the Hammers face Spurs and City in their final two fixtures.

Hughes Full of Praise for Arnautovic’s Recent Displays

The Potters boss talked up the recent performances of the controversial Austrian, who finally seems to have settled into life in the Premier League:

“It’s fair to say he came with a little bit of baggage, but we were probably exactly what he needed to get out of the environment he found himself in. It’s not easy to come in and have an impact, certainly as a creative player. It’s easier for defensive-minded players. When you are a creative player the onus is on you to win games and that’s more difficult. But once he’s got to grips with it, the second half of the season has been good for the team and good for him.”

The Scout Says: With a goal and two assists in the first five months of the season, it’s fair to say Arnautovic’s initial impact was minimal for the Staffordshire outfit. As Stoke begin to find their feet under Hughes, however, the Austrian has started to deliver with a degree of consistency, chipping in with a goal and six assists from mid-January onwards. Arnuatovic’s assist in the 1-0 win against Newcastle took him to eight for the season – a tally bettered by only five other midfielders and more than double any other Stoke midfield option. With Cardiff, Fulham and West Brom still to play, Hughes’ in-form side are afforded further chance to pick up the points and cement a place in our plans for next term.

Pardew Explains Formation Change

The Newcastle boss discussed his decision to roll out a 3-5-2 tactic for Saturday’s trip to Stoke, as he unsuccessfully attempted to address a run which had seen his side lose the previous three fixtures without finding the net:

“To give the senior players a platform to win the game. And I thought they contributed well to that. We have talked about it, trying this system. We have got an overflow of centre-backs at the moment but are lacking in other areas for sure. I just think we are missing some key players. I know they have heard that. But it does have an impact. When you haven’t scored and you don’t have that confidence in the group. You can argue that we are trying to install that.”

The Scout Says: With first-choice full-backs Mathieu Debuchy and Davide Santon sidelined, the Magpies manager moved away from the usual four-man backline and handed Steven Taylor a rare start. Pardew utilised young left-back Paul Dummett on the left of midfield, with Vernun Anita on the opposite flank, whilst Hatem Ben Arfa was once again deemed worthy of only a sub appearance, in spite of the lack of options. Newcastle have now scored just once in six matches, and whilst few, if any, Fantasy managers will be investing at this stage, their final two home games against Swansea and Cardiff suggest Pardew may yet give the Tyneside fans something to smile about.

I posted this earlier with some interesting responses, now that there is a few more about i'll see is the general consensus the same..

What points gap does everyone reckon is too much to bridge? I'm 60 points behind my rival in my main league (iPad at stake) but is that too much? I'm not sure whether to chase him with captain differentials or just try and get a good rank/win the rest of my mini leagues..

The smaller leagues are among friends etc. and without wanting to sound arrogant I do always win them (I care much more than them though 🙂 ) so it would still be nice to win again but the main league has very good prizes and i've never won a prize from FPL before so it would be nice to get something back! 🙂

You could easily make 60 points back especially with DGW, I was 50 points behind in my ML but after some good transfers I am now only 2 points behind with 7 to play this week to 5 to play.
So just plan your transfers carefully ready for DGW.

i wouldnt go for differentials for the sake of differentials but to finish the season i think there will be some good options who will be differentials. hazard for example may become one. regarding the 60 point lead mata outscored hazard by 28 points and yaya by 24 points in 2 gameweeks recently, an example of how quickly things can change, and that's just 1 player, you've still got captains and 10 other players in your team

Hello all, really torn between Gerrard and Sterling. Any thoughts?

        A) Yaya --> Gerrard = Still enough money to get Aguero, just, but not RVP or Rooney as well, and probably not Mata either

        B) Yaya --> Sterling = Aguero, a Utd striker and Mata without any problems

Current attacking players: Yaya, Silva, Eriksen, Mutch, Delph / Suarez, Studge, Lukaku

B for the other players it allows you to bring in.

I see Gerrard having a big say in the final few games though. Whether it's as much of a say as the United fella's obviously remains to be seen..

Thanks Aaron, yep B would leave plenty of cash free for Mata and RVP/Rooney, as well as getting Aguero in if he comes through Wednesday night OK. I think Sterling's a great shout for the run-in and obviously it frees up oodles of money, but after watching the game on Sunday I'm just wondering if Gerrard is going to morph into a FPL cartoon super-beast for these final games and rake in the points through sheer willpower...

Exactly, screw the stats. Sometimes that emotion and narrative is all we've got to go on... I'm dreaming of the scousers needing to beat Newcastle on the final day of the season to clinch it, and Gerrard winning a 94th minute penalty - the tension would be incredible anyway, and if I had him in my FPL team as well I'd be going bloody mental!

haha yeah! honestly even without the narrative hes a great option....don't know how he missed that free header v man city, and Liverpool could have easily had a penalty if the ref fell the Suarez's antics

Yep that is a very fair point. I was kind of assuming that at least one of them would be for next week and the run-in. Mind you if they're both fit then the appeal of Mata drops slightly.

          from BBC:

Injured Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure hopes he can help the club in their bid to win the Premier League title.

The 30-year-old injured his groin in the first half of the 3-2 defeat by Liverpool on Sunday.

Toure tweeted: Thank you for all the support! I am still waiting for the diagnosis... hoping to be back on the field soon!

        Morning All.

I haven't seen a lot of love for coutinho.

Given that Sturridge has a bit of a hammy and Hendo out for 3, and not forgetting that he's been picked ahead of Sterling of late, he has to be a good shout for a differential.

He was superb against City too.

        Any thoughts?

ok, so i have kolarov. ive always planned on getting rid of him for i.e a chelsea defender, but another transfer always seems more important. I think the pattern for now is clchy away and kolarv at home, and with three home games and two away games in the nex four gw's Im set on keeping. Especially if hes on pens when agu and yaya is not on the field and yaya turns out to be injured for a while. Seems wise?

i am not blaming anyone. just saying what is happening. Of course no one could predict Yoyo injured. If he was fit I would have stand again for that decision 😉

I believe you specifically say because of Demi 😉

So it was a choice between Yaya or Silva?

You made the right choice definitely, could have been an entirely different game if Yaya had stayed on.

Dzeko looked pretty woeful too though and Aguero nearly had an assist if SIlvas legs were longer. I wouldnt rule out an Aguero start just yet

Morning people. Was planning on downgrading Baines and bringing in Aguero this week but injuries have scuppered that plan. Any ideas what to do here? One free transfer and 0.6 in the bank

              Mannone (Davis)
              Coleman Azpi Baines (Ward Chester)
              Eriksen Yaya Gerrard Silva (Pozuelo)
              Suarez Lukaku Sturridge

              A) Yaya to Mata/Nasri, play 442 with Ward and bench Sturridge
              B) Yaya and Sturridge to Nasri and Aguero -4
              C) Baines, Yaya and Sturridge to Terry, Mata and Aguero -8
              D) Anything else?

              Cheers in advance!

Not worth a hit. Fonte looks good for this week IMO if Boruc starts. There aren't really any Chelsea mids I'd like so may as well stock up for the double (either Nasri or Mata).

Only players with notable ownership (over 5%) in the top10k tonight:

              Chesney 5.5%
              Mert 11.6%

So thankfully not much movement. Could do with a West Ham goal really.

Ozil is back in training so maybe he'll make the bench tonight. Should be returning to full fitness soon although I've no idea if he'll start vs Hull.

Here's a serious question! And some overly forward thinking. 😉

              Who to replace Hazard with?
              A) Mata
              B) Eriksen

This decision will impact all future transfers for the rest of the season, with Mata being pretty much a straight swap (just £0.7m cheaper than Hazard), and Eriksen being almost £3m cheaper.

It boils down to this head-to-head:

              PLAN MATA:
              GW35: Mata (eve)
GW36: Mata (NOR), Rooney (c) (NOR), Lukaku (sou)
GW37: Mata (SUN, HUL), Rooney (c) (SUN, HUL), Evra/Phil Jones (SUN, HUL); [1st Sub: Lukaku (MCY)]
GW38: Sturridge (c) (NEW), Lukaku (hul), Mata (sou), Evra/Phil Jones (sou)

              PLAN ERIKSEN:
              GW35: Eriksen (FUL)
GW36: Eriksen (stk), van Persie (c) (NOR), Rooney (NOR), (-4 POINT HIT!)
GW37: van Persie (c) (SUN, HUL), Rooney (SUN, HUL), Smalling/Evans (SUN, HUL); [1st Sub: Eriksen (whm)]
GW38: Suarez (c) (NEW), Rooney (sou), Eriksen (AVL), Smalling/Evans (sou)

              Cons of Plan Eriksen:
              - 4 point hit
              - Relies on van Persie's fitness (may not be fit for Norwich game, perhaps only GW37)
              - Potentially will only be able to afford van Persie in GW37 anyway (it's touch and go at the moment)
              - Smalling/Evans are less likely to play the double than Jones/Evra, but I can monitor this.

              Pros of Plan Eriksen:
              - RVP and Rooney up front vs NOR, SUN, HUL in the space of 2 weeks

              Pros of Plan Mata:
              - No hits taken
              - Can easily afford it with about £0.8m to spare
              - Both of these mean it will be far easier to come up with a backup plan, in the case of injuries to my squad.

              Please vote now! 😉

The issue is when RVP and Roo return. Until then it's very hard to gauge who is the best option, for what it's worth I'm probably getting Eriksen in this week and Mata the following week.

If both of them are fit I probably wouldn't want Mata as he'd be shoved out wide again. This is all hypothetical though but with such few GWs left, I'd think quite short-term and get Eriksen in probably.

I captained Baines. If he is injured then I think this is the final nail in the coffin this season. Things just hardly seem to go for me this season. Yet my ML leader, who I have been chasing and chasing for what seems an eternity, seems to have all the luck in the world, captain picks work out near enough every week, players he gets in perform straight away, if I start to get ahead on points in a GW. His other players deliver that week. If I beat him one week on points, he pulls them all back the next GW.

Yeh. Been like that allllllll season.

Can't wait for it to be all over.

Sounds exactly like my season. Managed to claw back a lot of points the other week only for the leader in my league to pull away again with 32 points from Gerrard and Eriksen (who he had just transferred in). Always seem to go back to being 40 odd points behind.

                Ade will have to wait.

I'd do Yaya > Nasri/Eriksen (whichever you prefer) and if you don't think Mirallas will start vs Man Utd, and don't really have a decent bench then maybe take the hit.

Yes my thinking exactly. Will be just Eriksen + maybe Nasri see how the mood takes closer to mext weekend. Price rises seem pretty stable as i have RVP in the back of my mind for the double

There's something sinisterly funny about all of the complaining over Distin's baps being followed by a Baines injury scare. I like to think Distin did it to him just to mug people off.

I seem to have had 2 points removed off my gameweek score this morning - has something happened?

You must own Distin. He got booked which wasn't initially accounted for.

Distin got 1 BAP removed and it was given to Baines.

"Please note Sylvain Distin received a caution during Everton’s match against Sunderland on Saturday. The yellow card was omitted from the data feed on Saturday and now, having received clarification from the referee’s report, Distin’s points have been changed to reflect this. We apologise for any confusion caused."

Distins yellow card has been added and subsequently baps taken away

Gerrard for safety, Coutinho for a punt.

gerrard...hes only 1 mill more for so much more security...not worth the punt imo
