This would be more unlikely as Carrick would have to cover a lot of ground if the wingers would bomb down the flanks.
So, I think that may lessen Mata's appeal, with Giggs preferring a wide playing style.

This is something many smaller clubs do day-in day-out to survive. It's just dreadful when big teams like Chelsea do it. It's nothing of genius today, it has been successfully practised by many managers since invention of catenaccio. Some managers just have other values than winning too, and don't like to see football getting absolutely dire that it would if all would defend their box with and wait for opponents mistakes.
