I can’t say I’ll be sorry to see the back of this season. Those of you who have sampled this article regularly, or had the misfortune to listen to my bleating via the ScoutCast, will know that I’ve suffered somewhat. The rank doesn’t lie – this is my worst ever Fantasy Premier League campaign.

I’ve wasted words and breath attempting to analyse what’s gone wrong and, while I can point to some bad luck along the way, I’ve little doubt that my season has been tainted by errors of judgement and stubbornness to go with the “wisdom of the crowd”.

At least I can comfort myself by the fact that I’ve left the season with some lessons learned: nine months of struggle have at least helped me come up with the following pointers:

  • React as quickly as possible to form players and don’t be shy to use hits.
  • Apply that rule to bandwagaons and hunches alike – if there’s form, back it.
  • Don’t beat yourself up about chasing points when signing form players you’ve missed.
  • Don’t take unnecessary gambles with the captaincy in a bid to make ground.
  • Sign dominant centre-backs who win headers.
  • Only sign full-backs if they have an outstanding statistic in their favour – normally, crosses or tackles.
  • Don’t be shy spending money on defenders if they also offer goal threat.
  • If you think a player is injury prone, he’s likely to eventually live up to that tag.

Few of these will come as a surprise to most of you. You’re seasoned Fantasy managers, right? You know this stuff. I thought the same. For some reason, however, I’ve either been in the dark on these principles, or I’ve just been far too stubborn to apply them. I’d say it was 25:75 in that respect. Personally, I’ve been taken by surprise on just how much the bonus system favoured centre-backs over your run-of-the-mill full-back, while my reluctance to jump on bandwagons has punished me.

I mentioned some of these in last week’s ScoutCast and Granville, wise old whining head that he is, pointed out that “every season is different”. A cliché for sure, but an essential point to consider.

We can have our lists of rules and principles to follow but the fact remains: each season we are given new problems to solve and have to react and shape our strategies accordingly. The list above may have worked better for me this season – it could be next to useless next time out.

That’s the beauty of this game we play. Guiding principles are great and undoubtedly can help you out – but they can only get you so far. Most of use are pretty convinced that succeeding in Fantasy Football requires you to go with your gut and ride your luck, almost in equal measure.

The ten sets of 22 players each weekend aren’t aware of the methodical thinking we’ve put in – they’re not working with us or conspiring against us – not even Aleks Kolarov. We can construct best-laid plans and hope they aren’t ripped up by the whims of a Premier League manager or a reckless challenge and card-flapping referee. If they are, we have to ensure that we don’t give in to frustration and go again the following week, reacting to what we’ve seen, what’s unfolded and what we’ve learned. Or in my case, the following season.

I’ll be back in a few months, then, oozing positivity and seeking a season more like that of Luke Weston and Tom Fenley than my own experience over the last nine months. Those two Scout league names tussle for the Fantasy Premier League crown today, with Borna Gamulin sandwiched between them. Best of luck to those guys – and all the Fantasy managers who soaked up this and any of our articles and other efforts this season. It’s been a pleasure, even in this most bruising of seasons.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I do think some of the points he makes are valid. Dzeko is a very honest player and has really dug in and scored some really important goals for City when most people thought he was a donkey.

if you look at his minutes to goals ratio on his FPL page it's insane. Every season it's brilliant. He'd easily be a 25-30 goal a season man if he played all the time.

        1. Somalion
          • 16 Years
          12 years, 2 months ago

Yeah I do think that that ratio can skew the view a little bit but I do think he could hit 25 in a season certainly.

I think my thing is he's really stepped up for the good of the team. Suarez on the other hand was brilliant when there was no pressure and over the last number of weeks as the pressure has been building he's been dying off.

I'm not saying Suarez hasn't been crucial to Pool or their success and he's certainly been outstanding. I suppose Mourinho's view is the team that win the PL probably have the POTY and if you look at City it was Dzeko that kept them alive when Aguero was out. My thinking is Yaya deserved it.

im actually really interested to see what United do in the summer transfer window. some massive calls to make. i was thinking which UK based players they could go for but there aren't too many, maybe Lallana or Shaw. So a lot could be from other countries but this could end up like Spurs where you bring in loads of foreigners at the same time and they don't settle quick enough. i reckon they will bring in about 6 players.

Difficult definitely but I can't see them relying on entirely untested foreign players. Doesn't mean they have to look outside the PL though 😉

Vertonghen, Paulinho etc. Tottenham look like a few of them could be lured away.

Song could be one too. There are certainly players with PL experience that they could sign I think. But they will have to gamble on a few players too.

True dat, did not get that.......
Yes Vertonghen vould be a great by, i also like Lovren... experience from Lyon, showed he fits in PL, good age for defender.

I do not like the Song idea though..

It is gonna be an epic summer for us Utd fans though....

By the way i also think LvG is the wrong guy, due to his age.... but aint much else out there realisticly

Vert and Fonte I'm a big fan of.

I'll be honest with you, I think Song is perfect. Arsenal have shown that they do in fact desperately miss him in my opinion, he's a really good player in that role. Not to say I wouldn't expect them to sign another CM as well though.

LvG is a tough one. It depends on time frame. I think United need a big big change in attitude, in the academy attitudes, in everything really. Van Gaal is the perfect man to overhaul a club with too many huge egos (ego is good but not when it's bigger than the manager's)

Once he's done his job with the overhaul I think they'll look for a more stable replacement.

I think Song is totally the wrong type.
But my biggest Concern is that he just has played some 30 games in 2 years, not a lot of them against top opposition either....
I want someone on the up.

Yep LvG would be hood at exactly what you point out, but what then....

We set ourselfs up with his style and in 3-4 years we must get someone else with the same style...
Will that even be possible, if you look ag LvG's stats he was at his best a while ago..... He don't represent the forefront in football.
No doubg he is good but hevis old and the next one would hsve to take over his style of play, schooling etc etc

Unfortunately he probably id our best bet, but thag aint makinh me warm snd fussy

So this is it....the final curtain on a great season full of shocks and yet despite logic stating otherwise, i still here with a nervous energy as Liverpool could still win this thing!

On an FPL front it been a strange season, the new baps system, the volume of injuries and a few players that have provided season long consistency Suarez v Yaya.

Many a rank and mini league to be settled today so wish you all well.
