After casting an eye over Group B’s rank outsiders Australia, we now turn our attentions to Chile. Jorge Sampaoli’s side kick off their campaign against the Socceroos on Friday June 13 at 11pm in the most favourable of their three matches and could be worth the early investment before squaring up to both finalists of World Cup 2010 – first they take on Spain on Wednesday June 18 at 8pm, then go up against Holland five days later at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

After losing five of their opening nine matches, including hammerings against Argentina (4-1) and Uruguay (4-0), Chile chose to replace Claudio Borghi with Sampaoli in December 2012. The latter’s installation sparked a turnaround in form that saw his side win five and draw one of their final seven fixtures, scoring two or more on six occasions, and finish third in their group on 28 points – only Argentina (35 points) and Colombia (30 points) boasted a superior record.

Chile have since played four friendlies under Sampaoli, beating England (2-0)and Costa Rica (4-0) but have also lost twice, tasting defeat at the hands of Brazil (2-1)and Germany(1-0).

Most Starts Claudio Bravo (14), Mauricio Isla (13), Gary Medel, Alexis Sanchez (12), Marcos Gonzalez, Marcelo Diaz, Arturo Vidal (11), Eugenio Mena, Eduardo Vargas (10)

Most Goals Arturo Vidal, Eduardo Vargas (5), Alexis Sanchez (4)

The Key Targets

Sampaoli’s installation to the hotseat ensures we can expect the same high pressing, attack-minded philosophy from the previous World Cup under Marcelo Bielsa. Whilst Sampaoli is more likely to operate with a three-man backline during the tournament, it’s worth noting that he selected a back-four for four of his seven qualifying matches in charge.

Regardless of tactical set-up, there’s no doubt that Mauricio Isla and Eugenio Mena will be crucial to Chile’s chances. Isla has fallen out of favour at Juventus and was handed only 10 league starts this term but is a key starter for his country – both will patrol up and down the flanks, whether as full-backs in a four-man backline or as out-of-position wing-backs in a 3-4-3 formation and are priced at 5.0 and 4.9 respectively in FantasyiTeam. The downside is that the heart of Chile’s defence hardly bodes well for defensive returns – Cardiff’s Gary Medel is utilised as a central defender due to a lack of options, whilst veteran Marcos Gonzalez’ lack of pace will be targeted by opponents.

Currently sidelined with a knee injury, Juventus’ Arturo Vidal is expected to be fully fit in time for the tournament opener against Australia. With spot-kicks also boosting his appeal, Vidal (6.8 in FantasyiTeam) was one of three players to score four times in Sampaoli’s seven qualifying matches and his superb all-round style of play is likely to be looked upon favourably by Fantasy games.

Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas also netted four times for the new manager. Sanchez, in particular, seems to have stepped up a level since Sampaoli stepped in – he had previously failed to score during qualifying under Borghi and has also gone on to score twice in a recent Wembley win over England. Vargas started only three times for Borghi but was quickly installed as a key player by the new manager, though he’s stuttered domestically this season, scoring just three times in La Liga for Valencia compared to Sanchez’ 19 goals and 10 assists for Barcelona. Nonetheless, at only 6.7 compared to his fellow forward’s 9.4 in FantasyiTeam, he could appeal to those on a budget.

The Long Shots

Having started each of the final three group games, playmaker Jorge Valdivia (5.3 in FantasyiTeam), looks to have established himself as a member of Sampaoli’s XI and is expected to get the nod as the most advanced central midfielder. This could see him utilised as a false nine, dropping deep to leave Sanchez and Vargas as wide forwards, though there’s a possibility Sampaoli may opt for a more defensive-minded player against the Spanish – he chose a 3-5-2 formation in a 2-2 draw with the defending champions in September last year.

I'm hearing Poch set to reject Spurs for extension to Saints contract. Best news for Saints and for all clubs below the top 6. Im stil sure we will lose Shaw and Osvaldo though but wiith that £38m in the bank our debts will be sorted with funds to deal with obvious gaps in the line up. Critically though we need to retain the others eg Lallana, Schneiders, Lovren, Wanyama, JRod et al.

Amazing the quality that Saints have throughout their team, especially considering they haven't spent a ton of money on building it. It would indeed be a shame to see that team gutted.

Agree, and very young talent in there too Ward-Prowse, Clyne and Chambers to add to those mentioned by Staurel.

Shaw going shouldn't be too bad but unfortunately the players on the second list will almost certainly leave if a top 4 club come knocking

I did thanks for backing up my view. He is a beast in centre midfield. Im actually becoming more confident about next season now that it looks like Poch will sign. His signature was more important than Shaws. The boys control, speed and power is immense but £27m is also pretty immense especially if it sorts out a few things at the club.

          Yeah I agree fully.

If any of those guys mentioned move on there is no reason why Pochetino won't find the next Shaw/Wanyama/Lovren etc to fill the void. I don't know if it is the scouting network that picked these guys up or Pochetino had more hands on involvement pinpointing targets but either way as long as the method is still in place then it might not be AS big a blow to lose some of them.

          Predicted sales in the press:

          Shaw 27m
          Lallana 20m
          Osvaldo 10m
          Ramirez 12m

You would have to be fairly confident Pochetino could replace all of these with half the money they generate.

Can anyone apply for team member or are there limitations based on activity on FFS UEFA?

No limitations except you need to have an active McD team. It's upto each captain how they want to scout their team member. Considering it's a tourney for mainly the folks here, i would think they'd want active posters on FFS too.

It looks good, I think they thought it up pretty well.

Also the additional points for an unseeded player reaching round 4 is nice, encourages having 1-2 wilder punts.

As for the WC UEFA Game,

They need 160 people to run the game. i doubt they'll be able to get that many.

Alternative is of course, having teams with 3 or even fewer people, which won't make much of a difference judging by the rules

I'm seriously considering going with 3 Brazilians and swapping them out for 3 Russians in GR1. Then in GR2, swap the Russians out after they've played for Portuguese players. I will then have numerous options in GR3, and a wildcard to use between the end of GR3 and the start of GR4.

The other tactic I'm considering, is going with 3 Brazilians and RvP. I'll then use my free transfers to swap out RvP for Sturridge, then Sturridge - Messi, and finally Messi - Ronaldo. I'll then replace one or two of the Brazilian players in GR2.

Tactic 1 = more players scoring points
Tactic 2 = less but better quality players scoring points

You can enter a weekly Quiz with your first attempt each week completely free and the top 10 get paid out. Over 18's can enter into a Free Credit Comp, again, top 10 get paid out. Both are massive long shots, but anyone playing the game has nothing to lose by having a go.

If you're feeling confident you can also challenge other users to Credit H2H's for anything up to 5,000 F/c, and enter into paid Credit competitions. Obviously these require you to have some credits initially, but 1 win could set you up for months.

I'm not a big fan of picking up 3 Russians, plus the fact that Neymar, Ronaldo, Messi etc. all play on different days can be exploited.

Quick question regarding captaincy. Say if I want Messi captain in GR2, but don't have him, is it OK to captain someone playing after him like de Bruyne, and changing captaincy to Messi when I bring him in(Before de Bruyne plays)?

When GR2 starts, just deselect your current captain (just click on your current one to do this) and then you can captain Messi after you bring him in. Your workaround will also work.

I was thinking of the same tactic, but I fancied 3 South Korea players as they play Algeria next. The captain choice is confusing though and not clear, I assume it's ok to captain neymar getting his double points, then switch him to heung-son before the end of the gameweek?

Because it's Russia v South Korea straight after the Brazil game.

By taking out 3 Brazil players for either Rus or Kor before that game starts, you get points for 6 players instead of 3. Doesn't work with Algeria because they play Belgium before the BRA v MEX game.

Sounds good. You can captain Neymar, get double points for both games and then transfer him out for a South Korean. As you can only captain one player in a single GR, the South Korean you bring in won't score double for you, but you will keep all the captain points that Neymar scored for you.

Just make sure you don't take Neymar out before he's played both games, and you bring heung-son in at least 10 minutes before the game kicks off.

What do we make of Upson joining Leicester? Will he start?

Most of us are targeting Leicester defenders for a 4th/5th defender, so it's worth looking at. How do we think they will line-up? I'm guessing:

    Schmeichel / Hamer

de Laet, Morgan, Upson, Schlupp / Konchesky

Reckon any of those will come in at 4m? I think whoever starts the season at LB could be good since they will probably be 4m due to uncertainty of who is first choice. I fear the other 3 will be 4.5m

That looks good. Yeah they can be a bit too relaxed in their defending at times. Aerial threat and the chance of some free kicks from Luiz though.

Need to have a closer look. I like Argentina/France/Belgium for fixtures. Ivory Coast/Greece/Colombia could be a tight group so cheap defenders from there might be an option.

All over Columbian defence, great record in qualifying.

                        As it stands i've got...

                        Ospina;
                        Rojo, Schaer, Luiz;
Oscar, Yaya, de Bruyne, Kagawa, Cuadrado.
                        Falcao, Neymar(c).

Plan to do Yaya to Muller, Falcao to Messi, Messi to Ronaldo in the first round. Neymar & Oscar out in the 2nd.

Fabian Schaer looks a top player. I was looking at Lichtsteiner earlier.

Schaer is a major goal threat, 3 goals in 5 games for the Swiss, worth a go given their Group.

Also prefer Shinji, I think he was the better of the two at the Confederations Cup last year, but i'll monitor that one in the friendlies.

I presume Falcao will be fit, if not then i'll probably put Cavani(vs Costa Rica) in his place.

Derby scored more goals than any other team in the league.
But they conceded more goals than 12th placed Middlesbrough.

    .
So they should have cheaply priced defenders and good budget attacking options. Just how I like it 🙂

apparently they have got 12 penalties this season! not going to get half as many in PL.

Martin took 7 of them, converting 5 with rather poor rate of 71%. But that was loudly better than the other two: Bryson, 1/2, 50%, and Russel 1/3, 33%.

Overall rate just 58%!!! Shockingly low. I would not get their penalty taker in FPL, minus points coming!

The last 16 games of the season Derby conceded 12 goals with 8 clean sheets.

Since McClaren only took over in September he was in charge for 36 league games winning 22 of them and getting 12 clean sheets in total but you can see a marked improvement the longer he was in charge.

Derby might be underpriced due to their full season performance last season but if they bring their form from the last 16 games into the EPL their defenders could be bargains by the looks of things.

Not too sure whether Spain will be as solid defensively as they were back in 2012, especially up against Holland & Chile, I wouldn't say Ramos is worth 6.3.

So, David Luiz is really going to PSG...that sucks, he's one of my favourite CB. The FFP is a farce, by the way. PSG was fined for 60 million and now they're spending the same amount to buy one single player.

The FFP sanction was, for one part, that they can spend up to €60M, but on one player only.

They have that idiot Thiago Silva to thank for it being precisely David Luiz who they spent that on.

Yes, i know he wanted his "brazilian partner"...but still, come on...it seems to me that only ones who actually believed in the FPP have been the italian clubs.

Well, that goes precisely according to what UEFA sanctioned, and frankly, take a look at German clubs and all other French clubs than PSG and Monaco (is that even a French club), they more than obey FFP.

Reason for the French clubs is same as for Italians: lack of money. The French have an additional burden that they are not allowed to get indebted in the first place. If there was still money in AC Milan, as there is now in say, Monaco, they would do exactly the same thing.

For Germans, it is that these clubs actually are profitable businesses and have no problem in adapting to any financial demands whatsoever.

Yes, but the rule of the FFP is that Clubs should spend according to what they generate. I don't believe for a second that PSG and Monaco invoice that much compared to the premier league clubs or compared to Bayern. PSG has not won the Champions League and Monaco has not even won the Ligue 1. Let's just say that UEFA is just trying to find as much excuses as possible not to "punish" PSG and other clubs that may attract viewers in the european competitions.

Yes. As said, other than PSG and Monaco.

By the way, Monaco is not investigated for same reasons as Liverpool is not investigated: they do not play in European club competitions. After next season, they will be too.

Actually, you might not have really read the sanctions to PSG and City. They were both punished and quite severely too. Not excluding them from the competitions was clear from the beginning. Exclusion is the harshest penalty there is, not the only one, and it was never expected that they would deal that penalty easily.

Yes, i know exclusion was not the only penalty but it just seems to me that the whole FFP idea was one big "Scarecrow". The richest teams keep spending as much as they want even if they don't generate that much money. And the teams who are having some money issues(Inter and Milan for example) believe the lie and keep talking about the FFP as if it is something that could hit them harder than everybody else.
