Next up in our series of World Cup team analysis articles, we take a look at Louis Van Gaal’s Holland. Their campaign gets underway on Friday June 13 at 8pm against holders Spain, in a repeat of the 2010 World Cup Final, before they take on underdogs Australia five days later at 5pm, with a potentially decisive final match against Chile on Monday June 23 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

The Dutch cruised through their qualifying group, winning nine and drawing one of their 10 fixtures. Drawn against the likes of Romania, Hungary, Turkey, Estonia and Andorra, Van Gaal’s team ran riot, scoring 35 times and conceding on just five occasions, with six clean sheets accrued.

Most Starts Kevin Strootman, Jermain Lens, Robin Van Persie (9), Daryl Janmaat, Bruno Martins Indi (8), Ron Vlaar, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder (6)

Most Goals Robin Van Persie (11), Jermain Lens, Rafael Van Der Vaart (5)

Most Assists Daryl Janmaat, Arjen Robben, Jermain Lens (3)

The Key Targets

In spite of their excellent qualifying record, expectations are somewhat low as the Dutch go into next month’s tournament. Van Gaal has mainly utilised a number of young, domestic-based players and has recently, and rather surprisingly, decided to alter his team’s formation from 4-3-3 to 5-3-2 – a shape trialled during a 1-1 friendly draw with Ecuador earlier this month. Van Gaal has revealed three reasons behind his tinkering – the absence of Strootman through injury in the centre of the park, the lack of a first-choice left-back and his intention to field a minimum of three creative players in his starting XI.

In terms of Fantasy targets, Robin Van Persie remains an obvious choice. The United frontman racked up 11 goals during qualifying and is also number one for spot-kicks – he notched in the Ecuador draw last week and, available for 9.8 in FantasyiTeam, will play through the centre regardless of formation. Fielded as part of the front three during qualifying, Arjen Robben ended the qualifying campaign with three goals and a trio of assists in his last four appearances and, like Van Persie, is nailed-on under Van Gaal. The Bayern man could be shifted to the left of the new system, allowing Wesley Sneijder the playmaker role in “the hole†behind a front two – the Dutch have upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Wales which will hopefully shed more light on Van Gaal’s intentions. At 7.6 and 6.6 in FantasyiTeam, they are both considerably cheaper than the United forward.

At the back, Bruno Martins Indi offers the greatest goal potential amongst Van Gaal’s first-choice defenders. The big centre-half (likely to be partnered by Villa’s Ron Vlaar) is a real threat in the opposition box and notched twice in eight qualifying appearances – at 5.6 in FantasyiTeam, he’s already been linked with a move to Old Trafford following Van Gaal’s appointment.

The Long Shots

Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat was first-choice right-back during qualifying and chipped in with a trio of assists. He looks set to benefit from the new system – with Van Gaal opting for three centre-backs, Janmaat can be expected to forage up and down the flank as a wing-back and, like Martins Indi, comes in at 5.6 in FantasyiTeam.

For those games that reward defensive actions, Daley Blind could be worth a look. The defender (priced at 5.3 in FantasyiTeam,) is more likely to be utilised as a central midfielder in the new system and with Van Gaal determined to go on the offensive, Blind’s ball-winning abilities in the middle of the park could prove pivotal in allowing the more creative players the chance to flourish.

Coming in at 8.0 in FantasyiTeam, Jermain Lens cannot be overlooked. A somewhat temperamental figure, he started all but one of the qualifiers as part of the front three and racked up five goals and a trio of assists – he could be set to partner Van Persie through the middle in the new set-up, though is versatile enough to offer alternatives should Van Gaal change his personnel or approach mid-match.

chelsea's most frustrating bit of business is still de bruyne. they made an 11mil profit despite only giving him 2 starts in his whole time there. fair play for scouting him in the first place but that shouldn't be possible

infamous fiorentina kit. it's actually a really cool kit if you don't focus your eyes just on the darkest purple bits. and 7up must be up there with the best sponsors around. http://www.oldfootballshirts.com/img/shirts/360/extra_football_shirt_7372_1.jpg

      I only know about Derby.

Bryson could be a serious bargain if he comes in at 5m. I spose 5.5 is likelier, which is still a great price.

Ward at 5m could be decent but not as much involvement as Bryson.

Lee Grant could be decent value if rotated with another cheap option. Makes a lot of saves.

The lad Will Hughes. Liverpool likely to sign him in the future, they just think he needs to develop more at Derby first. They don't have the money to throw around by buying him and loaning him back.

Not sure just checked Pompey Fans analysis and he went with :
Cilleson/Krul; Janmaat, Kongolo/van Aanholt, Martins Indi, de Vrij, Vlaar/Veltman; de Jong, Blind, Sneijder/Van de Vaart; Van Persie, Robben.
So no Lens in there , he took part in 9 of the qualifiers so is someone back from injury or is Pompey Fan on drugs ?

        Cahill and Terry obviously
        Koscielny

        Jagielka
        Distin

yeah, every manager barring mourinho has too. makes sense mourinho prefers the english style defender. kompany is very similar to luiz, both very aggressive defenders, difference is kompany makes more mistakes than luiz now

you have to wonder then why brazil have chosen chris smalling then over dante, miranda, alex, luisao and marquinos. and why managers have chosen to spend 20m and 40m on chris smalling

Because Brazil prefer to have a defender who can attack rather than defend. Luiz has shown continuous ineptitude at CB in the PL. Bearing in mind Thiago Silva cost £20m....

So when you analyse the performance of David Luiz against Manchester United, which can be best described as totally erratic, it only serves to highlight the problems Chelsea face when it comes to replacing Terry.
With Terry suspended for the United game, Roberto di Matteo went with Luiz and Gary Cahill at centre half but, once again, Luiz looked like he had a mistake in him right from the kick-off and Cahill was 10 times better than him by comparison.
In the final 20 minutes of the game, Luiz was like something out of a comedy strip with his farcical defending and ridiculous appetite for barging into Robin van Persie.
When the game is as tense and volatile as it was in the latter stages at Stamford Bridge, the last thing you want is your team-mates to be putting you under pressure.
But Luiz was fortunate not to be sent off as his display became more and more erratic and there is nothing worse for the rest of the team to have a player alongside you who you have doubts about. Right from the second minute, when he was turned by Van Persie, it was clear that Luiz was going to have one of those days.

This Alen Hanson summary of one of Luiz's games sums him up. I can't believe anyone who has watched him in the PL can argue against it. Luiz is popular because he is Brazillian and has big bouncing hair and take spends and free kicks, Cahill (a pretty meh defender) came in and completely outperformed him, and that's not even under question!

Prefer the Arsenal boys to him as well but I rate Luiz quite highly personally. 40m is still a ridiculous price mind you, especially seeing as they have Marquinhos who is bound to be quality from what I've seen.

I'll never forget the couple of weeks where people actually bought him at Sunderland. It was like a well-scripted comedy. I ate about 10 cans of popcorn on matchdays while being on FFS those weeks

oh lord I remember that bandwagon. I think was i was going to jump on board it, then VdV's hamstrings gave up again and I had to use my transfer elsewhere

                oh yea

captained him in a DGW for 44

I think I recall that I bought him right at the start of his run of double figure hauls that season including a captaincy v Blackburn which yielded 30 points and basically saved my Gameweek after Jonny Evans and his -5 struck with his first trolling effort.
