West Ham made their first signing of the summer ahead of the World Cup in Rio, bringing some South American flair to East London in the form of Argentine hit man Mauro Zárate last week. The 27-year-old former Lazio and Inter man arrives on a free transfer from Argentinian top flight outfit Atlético Vélez Sársfield on a reported three year contract, having finished the 2013/14 season as the league’s top scorer:

Inspired by former Hammers favourite Carlos Tevez, Zárate revealed his excitement at following in his compatriot’s footsteps, and his ambitions for the coming seasons:

“Carlos is a fantastic player and a fantastic person, I hope I can become as big a favourite at this club as he was… I hope I will play good football and reach the highest possible level. I am very confident I am going to succeed here.”

A recognised striker, with the pace and technical ability to operate from the flanks or behind the target man (as his number 10 shirt would suggest ) Zárate’s arrival at the Boleyn Ground could prove significant in our Fantasy thoughts ahead of the new season.

THE HISTORY

The new Hammers striker will come as a familiar face to the Premier League faithful who will have seen him don the blue of Birmingham City while in England on loan back in 2008. The-then 21-year-old clearly demonstrated enough to warrant further interest – netting four goals and an assist in his brief loan spell in the Premier League – not to mention catching the eye of Serie A big boys Lazio, who snapped him up the following season.

Zárate’s form in Italy was somewhat questionable, however. After a promising debut campaign in Rome which saw a young talent notch 16 goals in 41 appearances, the Argentine stuttered, failing to breach double figures in all competitions in his following two seasons at Lazio despite racking up 42 and 36 appearances in respective seasons . Worse was still to come, though. In his solitary season on loan at Inter Milan, a return of three goals in 31 appearances for the Nerazzurri saw him return to Lazio a fringe player – bowing out of Italy with a single league appearance in the 2012/13 season, he headed back to Atlético Vélez Sársfield in July 2013, the club where it all began.

Things certainly picked up in Argentina. The Golden Boot Award was secured courtesy of 18 strikes in just 29 league games, comfortably eclipsing his previous best of 16 in 32 for the same club in the season which secured his first trip to Europe’s big leagues.

Though Zárate’s goalscoring record raises questions over his ability at the top level, it is worth noting the player’s ability to tee up chances for others. In his 126 appearances for Lazio, Zárate provided almost as many goals for his team mates as those he buried himself. At Inter he was, relatively speaking, even more generous with three assists to match his three goals , though if we consider game time in Milan, he averaged just over 45 minutes per match, making his returns slightly less underwhelming. In fact, while his strike rate dropped massively in Europe, the gap between Zárate’s minutes per goal involvement (m/gi) don’t differ so greatly when compared with his form in South America.

Europe
Birmingham: 613 minutes, four goals, one assist. 123 m/gi
Lazio: 9383 minutes, 34 goals, 28 assists. 151 m/gi
Inter: 1444 minutes, three goals, three assists, 240 m/gi
Total 11440 minutes, 41 goals, 32 assists, 157 m/gi

South America
Vélez: 5799 minutes, 37 goals, six assists. 135 m/gi

THE PROSPECTS

Irons manager, Sam Allardyce was keen to back the arrival of his new striker, suggesting that Zárate’s guile and speed will bring a new dimension to his side’s attacking play:

“He is a different type of player to what we have already got, which is what we have been looking for for a while… He is small and sharp and quick and has got good feet, so hopefully he can give us another dimension for what we don’t have in the squad at the moment.”

While Big Sam purrs over the acquisition of guile and precision that he’s been missing for some time, Zárate’s presence may have serious implications for some of West Ham’s most attractive Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options. In a game where security of stats is a major factor, former midfield stalwart Kevin Nolan and emerging starlet Ravel Morrison (both of whom commanded significant interest at various points in the 2013/14 FPL season) could find themselves vying for minutes with Zárate as the three compete for a chance to play off Andy Carroll.

Nolan has proved time and time again that taking up positions off Carroll can bear fruit, frequently converting chances created by the Hammers’ target man inside the opposition’s penalty area but has come under criticism from the Upton Park faithful due to a lack of overall contribution, while Morrison’s unpredictable nature frustrated Allardyce to the point of finding himself in the Championship on loan at QPR for the second half of the season.

The likelihood then, is that Allardyce will maintain his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, with Matt Jarvis and Stewart Downing continuing to provide the width, Andy Carroll leading the line and Mauro Zárate pushing Kevin Nolan onto the periphary as he looks to nail down the role in “the hole”. Beyond that, the Argentine offers Allardyce some much sought flexibility in the final third. His ability to play in almost any attacking role could see him cover either wing, pair up with Carroll in a 4-4-2, or see him used as an outright forward should Carroll pick up another injury.

Certainly, with the Hammers owners ordering Sam Allardyce to find a more offensive approach after another barren season in front of goal, the installation of Teddy Sheringham as new attacking coach may force us to re-assess their key assets in 2014/15. Discussing Sheringham’s appointment, Big Sam seems confident that his side could be set for an upturn in fortunes in the final third of the pitch.

“Teddy was interested in coming into coaching at this stage so we’re obviously glad to have him on board to give us a new outlook on how we are working with our attacking players. We hope he can give some individual expertise and one-on-one coaching with our attacking lads to hopefully help us to score a few more goals.”

Rumours Vidal may be fit and Ronaldo injured so I've got a decision to make on iTeam...

    Neymar > 1 of: Robben/Vidal/Ronaldo

If I sweat it out and wait for the Portugal game, only to find Ronaldo isn't fit, I'll just play Lukaku instead I think. Just hope the other two have quiet games.

Vidal out of those three, but I think Lukaku/Benzema/Messi/Higuain are even better options. Do you have Neymar captained?

Yeah Neymar is captained and will be back for their 2nd game. I think I'm sticking with Ronaldo and if he does pull out, will hold out further for Lukaku. Money isn't an issue luckily so can do what I want.

    Right...

Team set up with early day players on the pitch.

That puts me in a starting formation 433.

I've got Neymar in the middle of my front three, so my front line flexibility is limited and decisions should be reasonably straightforward. I'll probably play 3, but if they flop that'll just give me more freedom in the defence and midfield.

First bench player to be brought in will be Valbuena

Therefore will either need to sub a mid, or switch formation to 343

I have De Sciglio in my current back 4, so that shouldn't be a tough decision

Next player to come on will be Pjanic. Can't have less than 3 defenders, so that will have to be a straight midfielder swap. Lowest mid score OUT, Pjanic IN.

Then I have an Iranian mid and an Iranian defender. The mid can probably stay on the bench unless I'm desperate, but I think the Iranians will park the bus, so the defender would be worth playing. Therefore I might be switching from 4 to 3 mids, and need to plan so my rightmost mid at that point is the lowest scorer on the pitch at that point. Which should be my second lowest scorer up to that point as I'll take one out for Pjanic.

I've then still got two defenders (one German and one Algerian) and two mids (one American and one Russian) to fall back on.

    Right?

    Incoming rant:

    1st goal:
Scuffed shot that went right into the corner off the post.

    2nd goal:
    Penalty that he guessed correctly.

    3rd goal:
Unexpected powerful and extremely accurate toe poke shot from Oscar right into the corner.

I'm sick of hearing everyone blasting the keeper last night, the commentators for ESPN (I had to stream it online) would not stop going on about how much he was at fault.
I'd like to see any other keeper do much better with those shots.

Everyone was waiting for Oscar's leg to lift back up to anticipate what he was going to do though.. Or at least me and everyone I wathced it were surprised to see him toe poke it so fast from outside the box while surrounded by 2 defenders, and it was right into the corner.

Maybe the best keepers in the world might have saved it, but the first thing people tend to do with goals these days is look for who's to blame, whereas I just think it was a moment of genius from Oscar,
It sucked being like "OH WHAT A GOAL!" and then being immediately puked on by commentators wanting to blame people left right and center. I guess its what I deserve for watching ESPN 🙁

Which just confirms what you're saying.

Oscar took his shot really early too. Croatia were ultimately outclassed.

The refereeing wasn't the atrocity so many are saying either. The penalty probably wasn't a penalty, but the defender did have a had on him. The foul on Cesar wasn't a foul, but if the whistle hadn't blown there's no guarantee the ball would have ended up in the net.

A goalie's opinion: For the third goal he made a basic mistake in the way he dived for it. He pushed off on the wrong foot meaning he couldn't get across quick enough. He could have also come out from his line further to restrict the space next to him, but then I'm just a guy saying this who wasn't playing under the pressure of a world cup.

It certainly wasn't a Rob Green level of error so it gets excused in my book.

      2. No way was that a penalty for Brazil.

quite possibly, though he is a home-grown player which could be important for CL

Hart, Clichy, Milner nailed in to 3 of the 5 spots.

Boyata, Wright, Richards, Rodwell, Sinclair all possibilities for the other 2.

It's too random, 2 pts for Blocked Shots.

You might find keepers in poor teams do really well, Iran, Algeria etc as they get points for saves and only lose 1 point for every 2 conceded.

I've successfully put my most recent playing players on the left, so if I change formation my guys that haven't played get subbed out.

    What a hero! 😉

I did this but then realized it doesn't matter because I won't be bringing any subs on until all those players have played.

The better option is to do what others are doing and put the players you think will score the least to the right rather than sort by date of game.

Tina, just went Sanchez (c) in Fox cause I doubt I'll be taking too seriously anyway. Just a bit of fun in that one so have Sanchez and Valbuena in GW1 and already lined them up to leave my team with 2 FTs for Robben and a striker (maybe Dzeko or something...)

I'm not sure about rules either but i think it only has to do with the match-up. You match up with your respective on opposing team.
I have just Alonso tonight. 2 players last night might end up subed but no hurry as sub don't play today.
          Great pick with Oscar.

Careful if you end up having to use Mbohli, he may actually not be 1st choice. Out of Algerias last 7 fixtures Mbohli has played 3 and Zemmamouch has played 3. Has a look the other day and the last 7 have gone:

7th last - Keeper not in squad
      6th last - Mbohli
      5th last - Mbohli
      4th last - Zemmamouch
      3rd last - Zemmamouch
      2nd last - Zemmamouch
      last game - Mbohli

Mbohli has 26 caps Zemmamouch has 6.

Mbohli was used in the qualifying campaign until they lost 3-2 to Burkino Faso where Zemmamouch stepped in for the return leg*. Algeria won 1-0.

*Not sure if Mbholi was injured.

I know I looked at the caps also but it doesn't seem as clear cut as some think.

Zonal marking has it down as Zemmamouch who have done pretty good team predictions for each team:

Australia have conceded 33 goals in their last 20 internationals.

    All 30 of the 33 goals conceded came within 7 games against the likes of France(6), Brazil(6), China(4), Romania(3), Japan(3), Ecuador(4) and Oman(2)(lol)

Their 8 clean sheets were against shit teams like Guam, Jordan, Hong Kong, Iraq, Canada - the best clean sheet achieved in the last 20 was arguably against Costa Rica in Nov 2013.

Considering that both Ecuador and China put 4 past them recently, I'm backing Chile to score at least 3 goals. Although Croatia only managed to beat them 1-0 last week, Chile are playing in a familiar climate that they don't have to adapt to, and hold an abundance of fresh attacking talent.

Chile to score over 2.5 is 31/10 at WH, I'm all fking over that. 🙂
