Having already acquired Lukas Fabianski from Arsenal, Swansea City dipped into the summer transfer market for the second time last week by snapping up Bafetimbi Gomis from French outfit Lyon on a free transfer. The 28-year-old arrives at the Liberty Stadium on a four-year contract and upon completion of the deal, revealed he had rejected the advances of a number of clubs in order to sign for Garry Monk’s side:

“I’ve been really impressed speaking with the manager and the chairman over the last few days. They showed they really wanted me – and that’s one of the main reasons I chose Swansea ahead of the other interested clubs. They’ve been trying for over a year to sign me. It didn’t quite happen back then, but they kept trying and I’m absolutely delighted to be here now…..I watched a number of games last season and I think the style will suit me. It’s a collective, passing approach which I like. I think the way the team play creates lots of chances for the striker and hopefully I can score plenty of goals.”

The History

A product of the Saint-Etienne youth system, the six foot one frontman made his debut back in the 2003-04 season. Midway through the following campaign, having produced two goals in his first 19 appearances, Gomis was sent on loan to French club Troyes, when he scored six times in 13 league matches before returning to his parent club.

Back at Saint-Etienne, he notched just twice in 24 appearances in 2005-06 before finally establishing himself as a first-team regular. A total of 26 goals and eight assists over the following two seasons attract the interest of a number of European clubs but, after a further 10 goals and six assists in 2008-09, Gomis choose to remain in France after moving to Lyon for €13 million.

The 28-year-old proved a reliable source of goals at his new team and served up double figure hauls (10, 10, 14, 14 and 14) in all five of his league campaigns for Lyon. Over his time with the club, he netted 94 times and delivered 23 assists over 243 appearances in all competitions and caught the eye of the French national side, where he has scored three goals in 12 appearances for Les Bleus.

The Prospects

Discussing the new boy’s potential with the Swansea official website, Garry Monk was understandably delighted to acquire Gomis ahead of a number of suitors. Aside from Wilfried Bony, the Welsh club struggled for goals last season – Jonjo Shelvey and Nathan Dyer were second most prolific on six strikes each, whilst Michu struggled for form and fitness in his second year in the Premier League and netted a mere two times in 17 league appearances as the club ended in 12th position – nine points clear of the bottom three. Monk went on to say:

“I’m very happy. You are talking about a quality striker who has played international, Champions League and top flight football in France for a big club. It’s a fantastic signing; a very big and important signing for the club. It shows just how far we have come that we can attract a player of his quality. He’s a player that can excite the crowd, make and score goals. He’s always done that wherever he’s been – and that’s what we want him to keep doing here. We want him to be an important cog in the squad and help us to continue building.”

If Monk manages to keep both Bony and Michu on the books, fitting all three into the starting line-up may pose problems unless a change of formation is on the cards. It’s worth noting, though, that the French international flourished as part of a front two last term, with Lyon’s 4-1-2-1-2 system helping them claim fifth spot in Ligue 1 – bearing in mind his fellow frontman Alexandre Lacazette notched 15 times, Gomis clearly has the ability to play in a strike partnership or as the lone forward.

However, Swansea’s penchant for a lone striker system means Gomis’ arrival understandably has the rumour mill in overdrive. Michu has been linked with a move away, amid reports he’s under Atletico Madrid and Napoli’s radars, whilst Bony’s 16-goal debut season has many suitors circling – Liverpool and Arsenal are both eyeing up the Ivorian, while long-time admirer Roberto Martinez is desperately needing to boost Everton’s options up front after Romelu Lukaku returned to parent club Chelsea at the end of last term.

As we assess Swansea’s prospects for the season ahead, Monk’s impact as the new man in charge bodes well for their prospects in the final third. Taking over from Michael Laudrup in Gameweek 25 of 2013/14, his focus on attack harvested 25 goals in the final 14 league games – by comparison, the Welsh club mustered just 29 strikes in 24 games under the Dane. Indeed, further assessment shows Swansea scored two or more goals in nine of their 24 matches with Laudrup at the helm; a feat they achieved in eight of Monk’s 14 matches, with three strikes away to Liverpool and two against Everton and Arsenal underlining their ability to deliver against the top sides.

The newly-released Premier League fixture list also looks promising for Swansea’s chances of getting off to a strong start. Granted, whilst trips to Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge in the first four are far from straightforward, the Welsh club entertain Burnley, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Leicester in their opening five home matches, suggesting goals could be on the agenda.

Ultimately, it would be a surprise for Monk to move away from the tactical set-up which has served the club so well in recent years. With Bony once again amongst the goals for Ivory Coast in the World Cup, many feel that, as his profile continues to grow, the African’s departure seems imminent – until that point arrives, though, it’s difficult to look beyond the Ivorian as our preferred Swansea option after last season’s exploits. A potential departure, however, would change all that and surely bring Gomis onto many Fantasy radars ahead of that enticing run of home fixtures.

The USA spends $600b a year on defence and yet Tim Howard had to make 15 saves.

What a huge waste of money

I cant see so many strikers double-score or more in this round (pretty heavy defenses IMO), I´d downgrade one of your 4 forward to upgrade Gago to either Masc or ADM, with ADM riskier but more rewarding I guess.

Looks good. Not very different from mine anyway, strikers excepted. No JRod neither, could prove us wrong (again).

But most teams look alike at 80% now. I´m thinking most are spreading their eggs in various baskets and I´m surprised not to see more triple defense (on whoever) and even double-triple defense (ex: HUMMELS-BOATENG-HOWEDES + CILLESSEN-DEVRIJ-BLIND-VLAAR)
In a minileague of 6, we had only 7pts difference during round of 16, and I´m starting to think this "double-triple" is the only way to make a difference from now on. Opinions on that?

its a good thought. but I think you must free your mind from the classical fantasy footbal scoring way of thinking. For this round, I'd rather go 3 costa rica defs, and 3 colombia defs - or which ever teams you think will be under most pressure.

Normally you'd pick germany and holland for a chance of clean sheet and the odd scoring chance yes? Not so much in the MCDs I think.

          There´s also that.
But you can still have double CB+GK for FR/GE/CO/BR/ARG/BE, as well as triple Dutch/CRC CB while still banking on McD points system favoring CBs.

          My thought was:
          * everyone has the same def (pick 6 from 1GER, 1 FR, 1CO, 2HOL, 1CRC, 1ARG, 1BE) * there will be few CS (and less difference in RB or BS between teams IMO)
so if you´re to score a CS with only one of the 2 team chosen, this could be a nice differential, even under McD system.
          still considering it. Thoughts welcomed.

Some differentials I am bat around for the quarters:

    - Jackson Martinez - seems to have come out from the rain and Teo is sitting behind him. He has the physicality to do well and Brazil will be all over James like a wet shirt.

    - Memphis Depay - scored twice and could play on the left side of a front 3. At 4 would be a decent 3/4th attacker should you decide to go heavy at the back and need a punt.

    - Keylor Navas - not really under the radar, but if you are playing the one goalkeeper strategy it seems like this is the one to pick. When the Dutch player Australia (similar counter-attacking approach) they managed 14 shots, 9 on target. You would have to think Navas would be seeing at least 6-10 saves this match.

    - Jan Vertoghen - Nailed on now and bombing forward like crazy. Since taking over from Vermaelan in MD2, he scored 15 and then 13 and is only priced at 5.5. Most are taking DVB since his has been so dominant, but Jan can score and set-up goals and could be a nice differential.

Not sure about Depay because he seems to be used as an impact sub. But could be good if it goes to extra time.

Vertonghen is tempting me but will he play that same attacking role against a better team?

Depay will get at least 30 mins and for 4M is better for me than say Wijnaldum at 3.5M that is in a lot of people's teams and isn't nailed on.

As for Jan, it is a punt but Argentina aren't exactly tight defensively and they haven't played a single strong attacking side so far. Nigeria was as close at it came and they managed 2 goals pretty easily attacking the Backs.

Jackson, could be worth a punt. But then, striker spots on MacD are few, and on Fox, you already have lots of Colombia cover, I'd assume.

I wouldn't pick Navas because I can buy a keeper for half, and their points are too unpredictable. Memphis Depay, don't see anything but a sub appearance for him, and playing the last game, it is too risky.

That brings me to... Jan. Yeah, he has been brilliant, never seen him play like him. I have him on my Fox team, and could get him here.

That is why these are differentials...

I assume you are picking Cillessan (6, 4, 8, 9) rather than Navas (6, 10, 8, 10). If you don't want to take a risk (5-8 points in the bag), fair enough, if you want to take a punt at potentially hitting a Tim Howard-esk 19 points from your keeper, that is another story.

It is almost assured Navas will outscore Cillessan, the question is just how many points is worth the extra 2M?

Maybe, although he was better in MD3 than Teo in the previous two and more effectively defensively as well.

Teo is small and I would bet they need more size in the side against Silva and David Luiz. I think he is likely to start, if I was betting.

Also, no Costa Rica which is interesting and probably smart that since they are in the last game it's more of an emergency pick anyway. Better to have RVP and DeVrij to sub in.

A slightly different approach in McFifa. I think all teams are being more cautious and defensive in the knockout stages, so there are less goals and plenty of extra time periods. All of which means that recovered balls and blocked shots matter even more. So I'm going to go in favouring defenders strongly in a 5-4-1 or 5-3-2 formation. I'll be captaining Luiz, then Cillessen, then Mertesacker, then Messi. I'm currently ranked in the 3000s and would like a top 500 finish. Any flaws in the strategy? Or team selection problems? Thanks.

      David Ospina – Jasper Cillessen – 1.0

David Luiz – Per Mertesacker – Daniel van Buyten – Cristian Zapata – Stefan de Vrij – Giancarlo Gonzalez – Oscar Duarte

      James Rodriguez – Javier Mascherano – Abel Aguilar – Fernando Gago – Yeltsin Tejeda – 1.0 – 1.0 – 1.0

      Lionel Messi – Neymar – Divock Origi – 1.0 – 1.0

        I'm with you.

        A couple of notes though:

        1. Duarte got a red card vs Greece. Is he allowed to play vs Netherlands?
        2. Does a second GK contribute enough to the score? You could potentially drop 1 of them to get more midfield/forward power. What I mean is 1 more "hit big or miss" player (CAM, probably).

Thanks on Duarte. I'll check on that. And the second GK is the biggest gamble, I think. Everyone playing seriously will have Cillessen. If he fails (let's say five points, with Holland winning 3-1, closing up shop early, and CR getting few attacks), a second keeper could be a very major differential. Brazil are certainly going to be on the attack. And after Howard's performance yesterday, I think it's not out of the question for a keeper to get 20 points. That's my thinking at the moment.

            I guess my reasoning is:

If Navas succeeds, why do you have Cillessen as back-up instead of only 1M keeper?

If you don't think Navas will succeed, why invest in him in the first place?

I think that the 2M or 4M differential between 1 or 2 GKs could be more profitably used elsewhere in the squad.

My thinking is that if Navas succeeds, then I'm ahead. If he fails, I'm in the same boat as everyone else playing Cillessen. But it does mean sacrificing the possibility of Cuadrado or de Bruyne or Valbuena. Therein lies the decision and the gamble.

Valbuena is 0.5m cheaper, De Bruyne is the same price, Cuadrado costs 0.5M more. I think that Ospina is the safest bet of these 4. Ospina can hardly "miss".

My question is still the same: Imagine if Ospina gets 10 points, 12 or 14. How do you know Cillessen will not score more anyway? How do you know when not to switch to him? = How do you know when your bet has not been successful?

Also, if you are looking for something to replace 1 of the defenders from the last match:
                  Yepes at 5M
                  Fernandez at 5M

          3. Having 3 defenders in for the last match can be problematic. if you don't want to remove 3 other defenders in the process. If you have the space for 2 only and decide to leave one on the bench, could be problematic. Maybe consider having only 2 defenders for the last game?

True. That's a miscalculation on my part. If only Costa Rica wasn't playing last, since their defenders are the most affordable but also the riskiest! I might try to squeeze in another 4.0 defender. It'd help if there's a surprise selection or two for Colombia in the first game (and announced before the deadline), like Santiago Arias or Carlos Valdes in the starting line up.

            4. After appalling Origi performance and outstanding Lukaku performance in the last BEL match, I don't think Origi will start. Should be Lukaku IMO. Hope the BEL manager agrees with me. 😉

            Alternatives:
If you really want to wreck Cillessen players, Ruiz as a forward is an option. Problem is, it's the last game of the 4, so there is no switching if he fails.

Ruiz could well be a better option than Origi. Lukaku's strength is great against defences that sit back. Origi is quicker so is better at running through higher defences. Lukaku was excellent in the final 20 mins against the USA, but I'm not going to gamble on him myself.

I think you can play this strategy without spending so much at the back.

Luiz is a liability and instead of Merts, pick Boateng. I would take Fernandez on Argentina instead and then improve the middle of the park a little.

Good points. Thanks. A reshaped back line with this budget could be:
          Boateng -- Varane -- F Fernandez -- van Buyten -- Zapata - de Vrij -- Basanta
Or I could turn Tejeda into Valbuena instead.

            +1 for Boateng over Merts.

If you want to save at the back, I would keep CRC Gonzalez. Great value for 4M.
At least Gonzalez > Basanta IMO.

Also, De Vrij + Gonzalez is also only 2 DEF for the last game.

        4-3-3.

Not sure who else we'll buy, probably 2 of Vermaelen, De Vrij, Carvalho, Vidal, Cuadrado, Sanchez, etc. Obviously some of these targets are more unrealistic than others, but just giving you the lowdown from the media.

I have not really seen him enough to say, but overall it looks like the frontoffice of LIV is not doing enough. All players coming in mediocre at best. I understand Lallana could be great, but they need some finished articles right about now

Exactly! A problem for far too long, signing players with potential and not defined quality. I don't mind taking the odd risk, I think Lallana is less of a risk since he can play PL level, but they seem to only be going after foreign risks mostly.

Really. I simply haven't seen much of him so can't really comment. Nice to see business is getting done early, but if we waited for Suarez money I couldn't see Can signing.

Early business is good but only if it's for the right players. I'll be honest, I've never been impressed with him at all, I do hope I'm wrong but realistically I just want to see the best quality players possible in the PL. I genuinely hope I'm wrong though.

We don't need Suarez money to make any deal. Selling Suarez are out of equation before this and still we have 50-60M money to spend.

And we would not go agreeing a deal (Can) if we don't have money.

Playing a world cup fantasy game in Norway, similar to the Mirror one.
      Important points:
3 points extra for a player who wins a game.
We have 5 transfers for the quarter finals
Practically the budget is so ridiculous, that it's pretty much unlimited
      No baps or recovered balls

      Team atm:

      Cillessen
Blind - De Vrij - Garay
      JRod - Cuadrado - Muller - Valbuena
      Benzema - Messi(C) - Neymar

Bench: Neuer - Hummels - Mertesacker - Oscar

Who should I transfer out and in? Thinking atm is shipping out Oscar, Neymar, Mertesacker/Hummels at least. Maybe Benzema too?

For instance does this seem good? 🙂

Neymar and Oscar ➡ Robben and Sneijder?

Appreciate any help with suggestions to the other trannies!

In Fox.... so if we wait until next round to use WC with the final Four teams, will that be fine, because don't the 3rd and 4th place teams play again and these scores will count in Fox.

Of course, the coaches may choose lots of subs for that 3rd place game to reward participation.

Reason is that some of us may have 4 Netherlands players and should they be upset, a WC can restore balance.

If you use your WC in the semi it's worth remembering that the pool of players will be 50% smaller. If you want to chance your arm with diffs then now is the right time to do it. Those who lead at this point can stay calm, it's up to everybody else to catch them.
