After the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game opened for business yesterday, we’ve been busy assessing the Player Price List for the season ahead. Having analysed the Goalkeepers in our first article earlier today, we turn our attentions to the defenders next, beginning with the cut-price options.

After shipping 61 goals last term – more than any side bar the relegated trio – Aston Villa have been placed firmly in the budget bracket this time around, with their main men coming in at 4.5. Holland’s World Cup hero Ron Vlaar is the clear standout candidate for Paul Lambert’s side; he earned bonus on seven of the nine occasions his team produced a clean sheet, though with five of those shut-outs arriving on the road, the midlands side have proved more than a little unpredictable. Jores Okore could offer an intriguing alternative after recovering from the injury that forced him onto the sidelines for the majority of 2013/14. Elsewhere, the full-back options are currently a lottery and with Leandro Bacuna classed as a midfielder once again, there’s very little reliable attacking threat on show.

Midland’s neighbours West Brom dovetail home/away perfectly with Villa over the season and have a couple of new signings in the sub 5.0 price range that are worth keeping an eye on. Belgian international Sebastien Pocognoli sets you back 4.5 and seems poised to take on the left-back role following the departure of Liam Ridgewell. New boss, Alan Irvine, has also drafted in former Fulham man Chris Baird, though it remains to be seen whether the 4.0-priced utility man can claim a starting berth. There’s a remote possibility that he could claim a holding midfield role.

The promoted sides are always ripe with budget options and Burnley duo Ben Mee and Jason Shackell are available for 4.5 to offer an alternative to those who have baulked at Kieran Trippier’s loftier price tag. Michael Duff is even cheaper at 4.0 but it seems likely that manager Sean Dyche will replace the veteran in the heart of defence: he’s had two bids for West Brom’s Craig Dawson (4.5) rejected. For those eyeing up the Clarets after they delivered 18 shut-outs last term, they alternate home/away with Hull over the full 38 Gameweeks.

The Tigers can offer James Chester, Maynor Figueroa and Liam Rosenior for 4.5, whilst Paul McShane and Alex Bruce are even cheaper at just 4.0. If he can steer clear of injuries, Chester looks the likeliest to partner Curtis Davies at centre-half and offer a stronger security of starts than the rest of his budget team-mates. A goal and three assists in the final 12 matches of last season also underlines Rosenior’s top flight improvement.

Revisiting the promoted prospects, Leicester’s main men are nicely camped in the 4.5 bracket. Former United man Ritchie de Laet produced two goals and five assists from right-back last term and looks the best option for those eyeing up a rotation partnership with Southampton over the 38 Gameweeks. Skipper Wes Morgan is similarly priced and missed just one match last term, finding the net on a couple of occasions. Matthew Upson comes in at 4.0 after joining from Brighton earlier this month, though it’s uncertain whether the veteran has been earmarked as back-up by boss Nigel Pearson.

Southampton can offer Callum Chambers at 4.5, with the promising full-back hoping to nail down a starting berth under new manager Ronald Koeman. At present, Chambers’ game time remains uncertain but, if he can prove himself over the pre-season matches, he could be an intriguing choice, given the Saints’ excellent opening schedule. We’re uncertain on the centre-back pairing, at St Mary’s, with both Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte subject to recent transfer speculation. This could yet bring both Maya Yoshida (4.5) and Jos Hooiveld (4.0), onto the radar.

With a transition also going on down at White Hart Lane, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Spurs shake-up. New boss Mauricio Pochettino helped Southampton to 15 clean sheets last term and if one of Kyle Naughton, Benoit Assou-Ekotto or Ezequiel Fryers can edge into the starting line-up, at 4.5 apiece they would be worthy of our attentions.

The Palace defence will inevitable be a popular source for mid-price defensive assets but, in the budget bracket, we’re limited to the fortunes of Adrian Mariappa. Bearing in mind he started each of the last 10 Gameweeks of the previous campaign, Mariappa, at 4.5, could just be the value route into a defence that delivered 12 clean sheets in the last 28 Gameweeks of 2013/14.

Palace rotate home and away with West Ham, although, from the Hammers’ squad, only James Collins is available at 4.5. Like Mariappa, he could still emerge as a Fantasy prospect but, having started just two of the final 10 Gameweeks of 2013/14, he looks to have fallen down the pecking order under Sam Allardyce and could be a risk too far. If we want to invest in a Hammers rearguard that kept seven clean sheets both at home and away last term, the mid-price bracket seems our only solution.

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett have both been priced at just 4.0 this time around. Neither is a guaranteed starter under Alan Pardew, though, and with Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat arriving to replace Mathieu Debuchy on the right, Dummet faces a tough task to oust Davide Santon at left-back. Fabricio Coloccini looks the safest route at 4.5. The Argentine earned bonus on six of the eight occasions he collected a clean sheet and could appeal to those considering a rotation with Sunderland over the 38 Gameweeks. The Ryan Taylor (4.5) situation is also worth monitoring – he seems unlikely to make a claim for a staring berth but, with his set-piece prowess, he could make some handy cameos once back to full fitness.

Sunderland’s new signing, Billy Jones, the injury-prone card magnet that is Wes Brown and the decidedly unexciting John O’Shea are all available for 4.5. It’s hard to justify a Black Cat defender, however. If Vito Mannone can shrug off the challenge of Costel Pantilimon and replicate the resilience that saw him average 4.6 ppg in 2013/14, it’s difficult to look beyond the Italian, whose save points strengthen his appeal over any defensive team-mate.

QPR are the final promoted side and they boast Danny Simpson, Richard Dunne and Clint Hill for 4.5. However, it remains to be seen whether either of the two centre-halves will keep their starting berths in the season ahead – the imminent signing of Rio Ferdinand underlines that Harry Redknapp is determined to significantly strengthen a defence that managed just nine home clean sheets in 23 Championship fixtures last term. Ferdinand’s price, when he lands at Loftus Road, could be of interest.

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron started 37 of last term’s league matches, yet comes in at just 4.5. The Potters’ home form particularly boosts his appeal – Mark Hughes’ side shipped just 17 goals in front of their own fans last term, producing seven of their nine shut-outs at the Britannia. As we’ve seen, the Potters afford us an excellent home and away rotation with Swansea over the season.

Indeed, the potential departure of Ben Davies could bring Swansea’s Neil Taylor onto our radars. The former has been linked with a move to Spurs since the installation of Mauricio Pochettino and if Davies makes the switch to north London, Taylor, at 4.5, looks perfectly poised to take up the left-back role and could hand us a rotation partnership with Stoke’s Cameron for just 9.0.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Very few. Most that are in line to start will probably be ousted by new signings so will have to wait for pre-season. Wisdom if he gets a loan deal somewhere looks the best bet. Dummett might play for Newcastle at the start as I think Santon is injured. Duff for Burnley was a mainstay last year but pretty old and likely to be replaced this year.

Morning! I'm thinking maybe Albrighton. The thing with the cheapest players is they're generally that cheap because their role is unsure, and there's always the chance they'll be usurped by a new signing.

Personally I'm a big advocate of the "early wipe wildcard" a few weeks in once the dust has settled, for this very reason.

Going with Fabregas myself. Yes Hazard has penalties in his locker (Costa might take over?) but his returns are wildly erratic. Fabregas looks like he could be a source of steady points.

----Pre-season should go someway to clear up the role each player has under Mou. He has complainers about Hazard's refusal to track back, with his midfield options, I can see him sitting out some games(entering wild speculation zone here).

Short version : My vote's for the former Arsenal captain.

Am I crazy for wanting to start the season with a 5 2 3 formation?

You can get much better value players in defence than any other position. And it’s easier to predict clean sheets than it is when a player will score.

Here is what im thinking if I do it.

    Szczesny
    Rafael Cahill Dawson Terry Jones
    Silva Eriksen
    Giroud Rooney Sturridge

The problem with looking at value, is that last season's points aren't a reasonable projection for this season.

Bonus points have changed significantly meaning the days of 3 BPs for multiple defenders are long gone.

Its not just looking at last season. The trend for big clubs is to get about 13 clean sheets each season. Not too many midfielders that cost 6.5mil will achieve that.

And to get a big hitter I would have to downgrade 2 or three of those defenders for defenders at significantly less reliable clubs.

It's viable. Even the big hitting midfielders are prone to a run of 2 pters - bit of a risk, though - and you end up watching a lot of games hoping for a 0-0 which isn't much fun. I do like a defence that reminds me of Monty Python, though - so well done on that.

Why are so many people on here against the Dutch Eredivisie League? They make out like it's non-league English football. Fair enough it's probably not the greatest league in the world, or even Europe, and there's been a lot of players who have excelled in the Eredivisie and failed in the Premier League, but let's not forget that not all the players coming from that league have flopped in the Premier League. van Persie, van Nistelrooy, Suarez, Bergkamp, van der Sar, Kuyt, Jaap Stam + Bony to name a few, were all signed from the Eredivisie and have done well in the Premier League, some a lot lot more than others.

Van Persie: Needed a few seasons to bed in
Van Nistelrooy: Can't remember how quick he adapted
Suarez: Genuine quality to be fair
Bergkamp: Came from Inter Milan after dutch league
      VDS: Same as above
Kuyt: Not best example for the league to be fair!
Stam: Questionable one good season for united then Sir Alex got rid
Bony: Did well but this season determines if it was a flash in the pan

When genuine quality comes from holland it tends to shine through albeit eventually in most cases. Problem is we've had Kezman, Altidore etc... score a lot of goals over there and struggle to score even one over here. What becomes of Tadic and Pelle remains to be seen. I was intrigued as to why a guy so prolific missed out on the Italian national side at world cup (Pelle)

I think the crucial point is you have to be wary especially surrounding goal scorers where like it or not it is easier to score a lot in the eredivisie compared to PL as noted with the Kezman and Altidore examples. Its still a weak league in my eyes you only have to look at how Ajax perform in the champions league to see that they aren't the power they once were but undoubtedly some individual quality comes across. I'd be more wary of Pelle rather than Tadic in terms of FPL for the reasons outlined at the top

Yes you have to be wary, but you can't completely write off a player, especially pre-season.

Yeah, I don't think Pelle will do too well, but Tadic might thrive.

I don't agree with you. I think that European leagues, with the possible exception to the Bundesliga, are to be treated with extreme caution.

What you forget, is that many of those you mention, made their names HERE, not in the Eredivisie.

But how many players coming to the Premier League from the Dutch League this season have really made their names in the Eredivisie?

        Pelle and Tadic haven't.

Basically what I'm saying is you cannot completely write off a player due to what league he previously played in. Take caution yes, but don't write them off.

No, I take your point there. What you are dealing with, is the assumption of most on here, that foreign is always better.

I, and many others, are forming the back lash against that.

I didn't say you were. But a majority of posters are definitely of the view that foreign is better than English.

Hence the Soldado debacle last Season, in which I was stupidly caught up!

Lamela also. So I, and quite a few others, have resolved to be cautious about many of these wonder signings.

it's not that. people just say to be cautious/weary of someone who scored a lot in the Eredivisie. some like the ones you mentioned were successes while others like Altidore were flops

Well, maybe they're wrong to do that, but who is doing it? You always need a closer analysis of the particular player, just that he plays in Eredivisie is not a reason to write him off.

For example, Suarez only came from there a couple of seasons ago, and one season after large part of PL fans thought he's the best player in the league/world. What he did in Eredivisie was something like 4-5 times what likes of Pelle do there. We were completely entitled to be cautious about him, to ask how much of that can he make on a higher level, but to write off a guy who scored the numbers he did, would have been outright stupid.

Sorry to sound like a broken record here and it will seem like I'm hammering this guy already but take a look at the lad Pelle's GS record he is 29 years old by the way!

          Crotone (L) 6 in 17
          Cesena (L) 10 in 37
          AZ 14 in 78
          Parma 1 in 12
          Sampdoria (L) 4 in 12
          Feyenoord (L) 27 in 29!!
          Feyenoord 23 in 28

It might just be that Koeman gets the best out of the guy, he may just be a late bloomer but comparing his record in Italy to his record in Holland either means a) he wasn't utilised properly/wasn't loved etc.. in Italy b) He plays well for Koeman or c) the dutch league is easier to score in. If its B then he will be a big bargain in FPL but if its C then previous points about being wary come into play

Well, it is a fact that the level of the Eredivisie is very low today. Defences in particular. In 90's it was still a top league.

That doesn't mean good players wouldn't come from there. It's a great place for young forwards to develop, but when you see that a player has got strong attacking stats in that league , you have to take into account the awful defending in that league. Not only are the defences bad, even the smaller teams also play extremely attacking football. This is also partly why it is a good place for young forwards to learn their trade.

I could be convinced if pre-season or/& Rogers indicates he will play directly behind the striker. That's Coutinho's best position no? And he's no slouch either.

This post-Suarez is still a top half of the table team... Top 6 at the very least. And he's got a motivated forward in Sturridge keen to prove his performance last season wasn't all down to Chewy.
---For his price, he's got to be THE guy behind Sturridge.

I know everyone on here is passing on Barkley due to opening fix and other options.
But I have a feeling looking at his development that he will be the main man @ Everton and if he learns to pass instead of trying to take on 4or 5 players every time he gets the ball then he going to be gold.
With that in mind I think I am going to put him in hoping that he is the next Ramsey instead of other choices such as Siggy, Arnie, Tadic.
So here are my front line up.

Sanchez, Hazard, Erikson, Barkley ( Albrighton)
    Rooney, Jelavic, 8.5 Bony/Dzeko/Giroud/Remy

It's an idea that's got legs. Many have a dilemma on which one of the two to go for, and you won't have that. You can then always keep the dominant one and trade the other for whoever leaps out for Ars/Mun/Liv/Mcy without too much trouble.

    Ok, Im sorted.

Based on pre season I will sort out the 4th big milf, and the cheapo defender he effects.

    What do you prefer?

    A) RVP and de Jong

    Or

    B) Rooney and mata/nasri

Who's going to have a punt on Vlaar? At 4.5 is he worth drafting in now with the possibility he gets a move to a bigger team after his world cup? Vlaar in a top 6 team I'd have, Vlaar in Aston Villa, not so sure?

His price won't change if he gets a move. No matter how good a WC he had he still plays for villa. If he gets a move to a decent team then he becomes a prospect.

    @Doosra.

Thought I'd reply to you down here.

That's exactly the route I'm taking this year. Cocked up a lot last year by taking too many punts at the beginning, and including a lot of foreign players. This year I'm going to try to play it safe and go with as many proven quality players in the Premier League as I can.

Think my team is all proven premier league players at the moment, apart from maybe Albrighton.

Albrighton is not exactly unproven, though.

I think having one risk is a reasonable choice, as it's easy to fix - but more than that could lead to transfer trouble.

I just think the new players are generally a bit expensive whereas there are some well priced proven ones.
