Alan Pardew continued his summer spending spree last week with the acquisition of Emmanuel Riviere from Monaco for around £6 million. The 24-year-old frontman is the fifth new signing to arrive on Tyneside as the Magpies manager looks to improve his options in the final third after loan signing Loic Remy returned to parent club QPR.

With out-of-contract Shola Ameobi also leaving and Papiss Cisse sidelined for a number of months due to a broken kneecap, Pardew was clearly delighted to land one of his long-term targets:

“This is an important signing because we know that in the striking department, with Papiss (Cisse) injured, we needed to improve that area. We have looked at Emmanuel for a while and we know he will score goals for us. Now we have an offensive line that will threaten the best Premier League sides with Emmanuel, Remy Cabella and Siem de Jong all on board.”

The new boy was similarly pleased with the move, admitting that his move to the English top-flight has realised a lifelong ambition:

“My dream was always to play in the Premier League and so when Newcastle called me, I said yes. I am a striker who is fast and strong, and I score goals. I think my characteristics are good for the Premier League. I love space to run and tire out defenders, and I work for the team. I want to adapt quickly to the Premier League because it is not Ligue 1. They are very different. I will work hard to adapt fast, and to play for Newcastle.”

The History

Born in Martinique, Riviere joined the youth ranks of Espoir Saint-Luce back in 1996 before his performances at the Clairefontaine academy persuaded Saint Etienne to snap him up as a 15-year-old. Handed a first-team debut during 2008/09, he managed nine goals and three assists in 38 Ligue 1 games over his first couple of campaigns before eight goals and 10 assists in 2010/11 caught the attention of Toulouse.

Riviere spent two years at his new club, though his form was hardly prolific – nine goals and two assists from 44 league matches later, he joined Monaco in January 2013. After serving up four goals and a couple of assists in 14 appearances over his first few months, the 24-year-old turned in the most prolific season of his career last term, netting 10 times from 30 appearances in Ligue 1.

At international level, Riviere has represented France at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 and scored nine times from a total of 34 appearances.

The Prospects

Versatile enough to also be fielded out wide, Riviere’s fleet of foot is likely to see him play on the shoulder of the last defender in the Magpies’ lone forward role, as Pardew looks for a like-for-like replacement for Loic Remy. With 14 strikes and three assists in 26 appearances on loan last time round, the latter scored at least twice as many goals as any Newcastle player but his subsequent return to parent club QPR has left a huge gap to fill.

After netting just 43 times in 2013/14, Newcastle clearly need bolstering in attacking areas. As Remy and Yohan Cabaye both proved, though, there’s Fantasy potential in Pardew’s squad and the Magpies manager will be hoping that Riviere – reasonably priced at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.1 in the Sky Sports game – can thrive up front after a summer of investment has added a much-needed creativity to the Tyneside team, with fellow new boys Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella looking canny business by Pardew.

Bearing in mind he’s only hit double figures once, there’s a degree of doubt over Riviere’s ability to make an instant impact. To begin with, those seeking to invest in the new-look Newcastle may turn to de Jong, in particular, as a viable option. Purchased as a replacement for Cabaye, the former Ajax skipper is expected to be fielded in “the hole” behind Riviere and arrives in the North East with an excellent record – scoring 10 or more goals in four of his last five seasons (also managing seven in 19 appearances last term), his classification as a midfielder (7.0 in FPL, 6.2 in the Sky Sports game) across the Fantasy games is also of particular interest.

If Riviere can quickly settle to the Premier League, though, he has the potential to flourish amid an opening schedule that smiles fairly kindly on Pardew’s side. Following a testing Gameweek 1 visit to City, Newcastle face just one of last term’s top eight in their following seven matches – with Palace, Hull and Leicester paying visit, and trips to the likes of Villa and Swansea also on their early agenda, his early form certainly looks worth monitoring for those on the lookout for a mid-price option up top.

    Chelsea Vs Palace defence.

We know both of these teams are good defensively, and there's 1.5 price difference between their most popular defenders. So I thought I'd work out the clean sheets per million.

Pulis - 26 games / 10 clean sheets / 0.38 clean cleans per game / 0.076 clean sheets per million.

Mourinho - 38 games / 18 clean sheets / 0.47 clean sheets per game / 0.072 clean sheets per million.

Pretty damn close! I may opt for 2 Palace defenders instead of 1 Chelsea and 1 Palace.

chelsea in the first half of last season where pretty poor defensively, they only manged a few cleanies, it was the 2nd half of last season when they got going & I fully expect themt o carry on where they left off hence why i wouldnt go without a chelsea defender

I know. But Pulis missed the first 12 games, and didn't have a pre-season to develop his side and build his squad up his way.

True, I just think chelsea were so solid from jan unwards that I just can't look past them, I think they'll be better this season & at the same time I'm not enturely convinced Palace can replicate the same form, it's not a given & might struggle.

    Some interesting ownerships so far:

    Sanchez (35%)
    Remy (20%)
    Shaw (28%)
    Rafael (2%)
    Sturridge (35%)
    Mertesacker (20%) Debuchy (24%)
    Vlaar (26%)
    Gerrard (5%)
    Aguero (11%)
    De Jong (10%)

These lead me to worry about not owning Sturridge in case he starts as strongly as last year. It's interesting that Gerrard is such a differential despite racking up the points last year too.

I also think Rafael could be a great differential to Shaw and for .5 million less as long as he can nail down that right back role. Suprised by the high ownership of Remy, Vlaar and Debuchy. Remy has question marks about where he'll be next year, Vlaar plays for a very poor Villa team (although is cheap at 4.5) and Debuchy is a yellow card magnet. Not at all suprised by Sanchez, I think hes one to definitely start with as he's just such a quality player and you want to get on board early.

Aguero and De Jong is also surprising given that they have the same ownership but De Jong is a complete newcomer and Aguero is a proven FPL great when fit. I think if these ownerships stay the same, it could be the Gerrards and Agueros that really lead you up the rankings.

Seeing these same cheap defensive player combos cropping up. Littered with problems imo.

Rose looks like being replaced by Davies, Cameron has competition this year from Bardsley, Mariappa going to be under threat as we know Pulis is looking for more defenders having bid for Caulker, and Chambers probably won't be nailed.

Chester, Coloccini, Shackley etc all better options imo

“Players who can run all day long, who invest a huge physical effort, who attack and defend box to box. But the way I understand it, you also need someone who delivers simple short passes, even if they seem innocuous at the time.”

“In English football sometimes it seems hard for people to rate those who instead of shining themselves make the team work as a collective,” Xabi Alonso said last November. “For example, Michael Carrick is a player who makes those around him play, regardless of the fact that maybe he is not the player that shines the most individually. ‘It is more important to find players who can build a team rather than simply finding two very good players and putting them in the team even if they don’t play so well together. I mentioned Carrick, but there’s Paul Scholes too – another player who maybe hasn’t had the career in the national team that he had at United.”

he isn't great now but we signed him after chelsea won their second consecutive PL title and he was our only signing that summer. he was instrumental in winning the title back and there is a reason why he was in the team for 95% of the time after that, especially during the last few year of the fergie reign, one of the more successful periods in united's club history

Quite frankly you can throw as many quotes and accomplishments on this forum as you like but I base my opinion of players myself subjectively, by what they do on the pitch, I'd say he played his part but wouldn't say he was considerably above average. You're within your rights to disagree but will you please give it a rest with the references! 🙂

I made a purely subjective statement and you tried to back it down with an argument that is irrelevant to the thought process, if I had claimed something definitively like "He's not a great player'' then I'd say it welcomes a debate, but as for an unwavering opinion, you may as well quit before you start trying to persuade!

fair enough, I myself would never profess to have unwavering opinions as I am always learning and observing from those that know more than me in every walk of life. having unwavering opinions seems stubborn/narrow-minded.

I have to agree with you there. I'd say an unwavering opinion is only justified when we're just talking about what one feels, and I think that's where our wires are crossed, whether you enjoyed something or not should be unwavering, this should be the same for how great one thinks a player is.

also I agree it is important to judge players yourself, but to completely ignore the viewpoints of players/managers who have a more detailed understanding of the game is ignorant and foolish

If I was trying to decide who to put in my FPL team I may use sources like these but when deciding if I think a player is good or great I make that distinction by myself.

Look, if your friend asks you what you thought of a particular TV show do you answer back with what you thought about it based on how much you enjoyed it at the time or do you look up reviews for the show and then tell him whether you thought it was good or not? 😀

the difference there is that the person writing the tv show review is often no more qualified to give an opinion than the average joe watching the show. they might be a better writer but that is about it.

in other fields I think it is important to take into account various things in forming your opinion.

You never have a chance of winning an argument with a united fan but the fact he wasn't choose for a poor England team sums it up for me really.

he didn't deserve to go this year as a result of his performances and injuries this season. I think if you look at how England got torn through on the counter attack though you might appreciate that a defensive midfielder with an appreciation for positional awareness could have filled the gaps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDgAC2dQfqM

'Result of his performances' thank you for backing my point. He's good at passing backwards and fletcher was a far more influential player in winning you the title. Wilshere was also injured most of the season and had poor performances still picked above the great Carrick himself. I can honestly say Jack Rodwell would have been took before Carrick if I was in charge.

Interesting though isn't it. Yaya is too expensive at 11m but Sanchez is almost essential in some people's eyes yet he is unproven in the premiership and only half a million cheaper. Yaya scored over 240 points last season and plays for the champions. Funny how we justify things.

I currently have Sanchez but not Yaya by the way!

it's the psychology. confirmation bias my friend.

Sanchez is an exciting player, coming from Barca, and we want to see him bring great attacking football to the PL. His price tag is huge, but we'd rather ignore that and his lack of experience.

Yaya, we keep expecting him to fall down a level and despite his great record last season, we tell ourselves it won't happen again this season and it's easy to say his price tag is too much!

I expect Yaya to do great this season, but I'll probably still go for Sanchez 😀

Guys anyone not going with Yaya .

Important you guys remember that Yaya was the main reason a lot of fantasy managers finished outside the 50k Mark .. he is a must have imo . If Suarez was still here he would b in everyone's team even if he was 14m .. Yaya is just as important ..him and Ramsey were in my team till January and Then i made a massive mistake by using Jan WC and bringing in donkeys .. went from 7k to 30k

My point is Yaya is a must. Pay that extra 0.5 for Yaya rather than Sanchez .. as much as I don't like the cry baby .he is gonna smash it again this season. And personally I would rather go for a proven premiership player.

    Good luck all

ooo will be a good contest that i suspect. Yaya is no doubt class and will rack up a healthy points total but i just can't start the season with him.

I'm doing a draft game at work and i really couldn't put anyone off making him the first pick. He'll play every game, will score goals and is just about guaranteed a decent FPL score come May... but still... £11 mil!?

He was absolutely on fire last season but I will wait for him to demonstrate the same form before I invest.

Silva is way cheaper and his ppg wasn't far off Toure's most of the season if I remember correctly. While he's fit, Silva is a great option given the price.

It all depends on how city set up for me. I think yaya benefitted massively from being pushed into the support striker role when they were struggling with injuries/results.

I also doubt he can keep smacking in 35 yard free kicks off the underside of the bar.

But I thought this last year and as the man says - it cost me at least 50k positions!

    So lets gets this straight.

    1) Sell Suarez your best player
    2) Buy Lambert and Can(injured) to sit on the bench
    3) Buy Lallana for the same price as Kroos
    4) Buy Markovic to sit on the bench
    5) Not be able to kick Borini out for 14mil
    6) Suarez replacement looks to be Remy
    7) Leaves Liverpool with 15mil and Borini still there

Donno if Tottenham or Liverpool spend their money worse 😀

but they did try to sign Sanchez. seems like not too many quality players want to go to liverpool. Not much rodgers can do

I agree Remy is terrible. Can is seen more for the future with Lambert there to replace Aspas, and to offer experience to the youngsters considering his journey to where he is now. I think your doubting their qualities, Lallana is an excellent player, you cannot deny that, Kroos only wanted Madrid and don't get hung up on prices, there is more to it than just the number the papers say. Borini wants to stay and fight for his place, fair enough I like the kid, great attitude. Oh and Markovic is a very highly rated player and won't simply sit on the bench.

      2) Lambert was always backup striker whom we paid 4m for ( Bargin ), Can not played today (injury?)
      3) English players always more expensive and Kroos only had eyes for one team
      4) He won't sit on bench for long if at all
      5) Borini deal been accepted by Liverpool
      6) Remy will be very good squad player adding depth and for 8.5m is great deal

They've sold 3 players and bought 2, the situation is being perceived as worse than it is. If a couple more players are sold then they might have a problem but at the moment I find it odd. Chambers has been a popular pick so far and is by no means nailed on.

Boruc +4m for 12 weeks then switching to Adrian works very well looking at the fixtures.

Southampton actually kept a CS in that fixture last season, not that I'm expecting the same but I wouldn't base the decision on 1 GW.

Every single season I always start with somebody in my team who I know is going to be crap, but theres a slight chance that they may just come good and find their old form and do well. But I always go with them anyway just because of money constraints.

But I'm not making this same mistake this season goddamn it!

Hence...... Au revoir Mr Jellyfish from all further drafts.

I won't let you drag me down and end up being 5.2mil by GW4 after missing countless chances and getting 2pts every week

There's going to be some great Defenders on offer this year for the top sides if transfer rumours turn out to be true. Could have:

    Debuchy (Ars) 5.5
    Verm (Man Utd) 5.0
    Davies (Spurs) 5.0

And I'd play those three every single week with Wisdom (WBA) (4.0) + Duff/Upson/Bruce (4.0) rotting on my bench.

looks good indeed. Debuchy is debatable due to BAP competition and bookings, but he should also benefit from crosses and may be booked less for a better side.

I'm planning two 4.0s on the bench GW1 anyway, as I just don't want to bench any value whatsoever when I can change it down the line.

It's reported in the telegraph as a possibility yeah. Currently there aren;t any 4m defenders starting (although likely there will be a couple come the start of season). WBA have nice home fixtures as well.

exactly. ive had some good returns from 4m cheapies in the past! as long as they start for a decent side im good. Foster / McCauley/ Lescott CB pairing is not that bad to have a 4m in alongside if he plays.

Just to put the other side:

    Speroni/Adrián -

    potential cs: 26

    potential bns: 28

    Krul/Mannone -

    potential cs: 21
    potential svs: 232

Went to our first pre season today -
We beat Darlington 5-1. Fletcher(2), Whickham, Gomez & Giaccherini.

    We played 4-5-1.

Mannone & Pantillimon played a half each. Neither was threatened.
Billy Jones played LB(because we haven't got one at the minute) & looked lively.
In centre Mid we had -
Cabral, Larsson & Ba in the 1st Half
    Cattermole, N'Diaye & Gomez in the 2nd.

Gomez had a pretty poor game.

Fletcher looked lively as did whickham when he came on. It will be interesting to see who starts up top out of those two come the start of the season.

In general? He works hard but has never found his position & quite often he lacks an end product, I imagine he will have a marginally better season but I dont think he will nail down a palce in the first eleven unless Poyet decides to play Borini up front which I dont think he will.

Borini will likely le Left Mid again especially if we get Alonso as he helps Alonso out defensively. Wickham did well at the end of last season but a fit Fletcher is better than him.

        Look above re;Giaccherini.
I suppose it was Gomez' first game, his passing was a bit sloppy, I expect him to improve.
When we sign a LB, Jones will move to RB.
N'Diaye looked uninterested, was disappointed with him & he offers nothing better than what we have.
Borini has apparently been trying to force the transfer to us, dont know why he was in their starting 11 today tho.
