Alan Pardew continued his summer spending spree last week with the acquisition of Emmanuel Riviere from Monaco for around £6 million. The 24-year-old frontman is the fifth new signing to arrive on Tyneside as the Magpies manager looks to improve his options in the final third after loan signing Loic Remy returned to parent club QPR.

With out-of-contract Shola Ameobi also leaving and Papiss Cisse sidelined for a number of months due to a broken kneecap, Pardew was clearly delighted to land one of his long-term targets:

“This is an important signing because we know that in the striking department, with Papiss (Cisse) injured, we needed to improve that area. We have looked at Emmanuel for a while and we know he will score goals for us. Now we have an offensive line that will threaten the best Premier League sides with Emmanuel, Remy Cabella and Siem de Jong all on board.”

The new boy was similarly pleased with the move, admitting that his move to the English top-flight has realised a lifelong ambition:

“My dream was always to play in the Premier League and so when Newcastle called me, I said yes. I am a striker who is fast and strong, and I score goals. I think my characteristics are good for the Premier League. I love space to run and tire out defenders, and I work for the team. I want to adapt quickly to the Premier League because it is not Ligue 1. They are very different. I will work hard to adapt fast, and to play for Newcastle.”

The History

Born in Martinique, Riviere joined the youth ranks of Espoir Saint-Luce back in 1996 before his performances at the Clairefontaine academy persuaded Saint Etienne to snap him up as a 15-year-old. Handed a first-team debut during 2008/09, he managed nine goals and three assists in 38 Ligue 1 games over his first couple of campaigns before eight goals and 10 assists in 2010/11 caught the attention of Toulouse.

Riviere spent two years at his new club, though his form was hardly prolific – nine goals and two assists from 44 league matches later, he joined Monaco in January 2013. After serving up four goals and a couple of assists in 14 appearances over his first few months, the 24-year-old turned in the most prolific season of his career last term, netting 10 times from 30 appearances in Ligue 1.

At international level, Riviere has represented France at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 and scored nine times from a total of 34 appearances.

The Prospects

Versatile enough to also be fielded out wide, Riviere’s fleet of foot is likely to see him play on the shoulder of the last defender in the Magpies’ lone forward role, as Pardew looks for a like-for-like replacement for Loic Remy. With 14 strikes and three assists in 26 appearances on loan last time round, the latter scored at least twice as many goals as any Newcastle player but his subsequent return to parent club QPR has left a huge gap to fill.

After netting just 43 times in 2013/14, Newcastle clearly need bolstering in attacking areas. As Remy and Yohan Cabaye both proved, though, there’s Fantasy potential in Pardew’s squad and the Magpies manager will be hoping that Riviere – reasonably priced at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.1 in the Sky Sports game – can thrive up front after a summer of investment has added a much-needed creativity to the Tyneside team, with fellow new boys Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella looking canny business by Pardew.

Bearing in mind he’s only hit double figures once, there’s a degree of doubt over Riviere’s ability to make an instant impact. To begin with, those seeking to invest in the new-look Newcastle may turn to de Jong, in particular, as a viable option. Purchased as a replacement for Cabaye, the former Ajax skipper is expected to be fielded in “the hole” behind Riviere and arrives in the North East with an excellent record – scoring 10 or more goals in four of his last five seasons (also managing seven in 19 appearances last term), his classification as a midfielder (7.0 in FPL, 6.2 in the Sky Sports game) across the Fantasy games is also of particular interest.

If Riviere can quickly settle to the Premier League, though, he has the potential to flourish amid an opening schedule that smiles fairly kindly on Pardew’s side. Following a testing Gameweek 1 visit to City, Newcastle face just one of last term’s top eight in their following seven matches – with Palace, Hull and Leicester paying visit, and trips to the likes of Villa and Swansea also on their early agenda, his early form certainly looks worth monitoring for those on the lookout for a mid-price option up top.

Ok I finally had my team finalized or so I thought. Then I read about speculation of Remy to Liverpool. I got rid of remy and got Costa instead.
But to this I had to sacrifice erikson and got snodgrass,

I then changed Shaw and from two cheap rotation gk to just de gea.

Here is what I am left with::3-4-3

    De Gea

    Figueroa Cameron O'shea

    Sanchez Hazard Snodgrass Mata

    Rooney Pelle Costa

    Subs (4mGK) (mariappa albrighton upson)

My question is - is this fairly generic for this site?

You'll probably waste transfers on your defence throughout the season as not enough money is invested in it. High risk but potentially high reward with your attack. My main concern is one injury to your front line and you'll have no wiggle room. You'll either end up taking lots of hits for extra transfers or using an early wildcard. Personally I'd downgrade pelle to free up funds to improve defence.

I was thinking about wildcarding gw 9 when uniteds fixtures toughen up. I paid badly when I should have wild-carded earlier last year. I suppose an injury to a forward could mean a 4/8 point hit. But I remember last years winner on the podcast said he took as many hits as he needed to get the team he wants. Hopefully I will have more balls this year!

Pelle is the joker in the pack judging by his record he might hit the ground running if he settles based on the fixtures and this tadic guy.

I am hoping that a few 4,0m defensive options might appear in a couple of weeks after injuries etc

        Thanks for your comment.

Accidentally posted this as a reply, sorry!

Somebody suggested that I scrap whichever of Barkley/Mirallas I would use, and instead get Baines in defence, as he'll out-score them both.

    My current defence is:

    De Gea, (Krul)
    Azpilicueta, Flanagan, Shaw, (Mariappa), (Wisdom)

I've doubled up on two United players as they should keep a few clean-sheets in their generous opening seven games. I would've swapped Shaw for a City defender after GW7, but neither Demichelis or Kolarov may be nalied-on at the time.

Swapping Shaw for Baines at this point would be convenient, as Everton's fixtures get better as United's deteriorate...

I currently have Barkley instead of Mirallas in my team, so that I can have Shaw instead of Jones.

If I were to use the above plan, I would have 7.0-7.5 (depending on whether I use Shaw/Jones) to spend on a midfielder, but this midfielder would have to be downgraded at GW7 to accommodate Baines's extra cost over Shaw.

This means that I need a 7.0-7.5 midfielder with seven good opening fixtures...

Siem de Jong would be appropriate, and costs less than my second choice - Dusan Tadic. I already have Pelle upfront, so using Tadic means I would have to swap Pelle for a different 7.5-8.0 striker, (depending on the Shaw/Jones predicament), although changing Tadic at GW7 for a 6.0-6.5 (depending on my United defender's price rise during the first seven GWs) would leave me without one of the two Southampton signings, and I'd most likely like to keep one if they are performing.

What should I do? I like the Baines idea, so it's more of a case of choosing my temporary midfielder? Thanks!

*Just got one thing to add. Schurrle (7.5) would be my ideal choice if he was nailed on. He had a great World Cup campaign, and most people see him as superior to Willian, but does Mourinho? I'll have to monitor over pre-season...

      GW1:

      De Gea, (Krul)
      Azpilicueta/Luis, Flanagan, Shaw/Jones, (Mariappa), (Wisdom)
      7.0-7.5, Yaya, Ramsey, Eriksen, Shelvey
Rooney, Pelle/7.0-7.5 (if the midfielder becomes Tadic), (Jelavic)

GW7 (not accounting for transfers after GW1):

      De Gea, (Krul)
      Azpilicueta/Luis, Flanagan, Baines, (Mariappa), (Wisdom)
      6.0-6.5, Yaya, Ramsey, Eriksen, Shelvey
      Rooney, Pelle/other, (Jelavic)

If I use Tadic and he impresses, then I'd downgrade my second (non-Pelle) striker instead, unless I use Pelle from the start and he impresses, then I'd keep him and downgrade the non-Tadic midfielder that I pick at the start. Sorry if that's confusing...

Really tempted to rotate him with a Palace mid over the first 6 games or so, not sure how much value there is to be got from it though . . . but strong fixtures.

I am amazed how Spurs have laid waste to a number of quality midfielders in the last couple of years by just not properly utilising them.

Motherwell are playing starjnan of Iceland in Europa league this week .
Starjnan have just announced they can have 85 tickets in total, and they will sell them on first come first served basis day before game.
Quality way to treat fans, club have already taken charter flight and sold over 150 seats, plus the other fans that make their own way.
Stadium is £80 return fare from city, so fans need to get there, get taxi to hotel , get taxi to ground and hope there still is tickets.
Know it ain't many fans and isn't one a big team but really joke that teams can do this in uefa competition.

      Cameron / Figueroa / O'Shea / Mariappa / Upson
      Eriksen / Ramsey / Mata / Fabregas / Albrighton
Rooney / Diego Costa / Pelle

Would like to replace Fab/Costa after a couple of weeks (unless they do incredibly) for Liverpool players. Thinking Sturridge/Lallana or Sterling (depending on play).

Any other ideas for 8.5m? Any other ideas on the team? Pretty lost here. Also, kinda annoyed that I'm having to play Pelle vs Liverpool in the first week, don't see him starting off his scoring vs them at Anfield...

Very weak back line is my first thought. Think Figueroa is far from a starter, same with Upson. Great midfield, which is probably the envy of most posters. Strong attack, though maybe two Chelsea attackers aren't required. I don't think they will score enough to get enough points, but just my opinion. Would prefer a Chelsea def with an attacker

Appreciate the feedback. Honestly, was planning to get rid of the two Chelsea attackers after a couple of weeks (don't like the fixtures - definitely don't see huge scores by them in that time).

Wouldn't mind getting rid of one of the two - but would still like to bring in Sturridge after a week or two somehow (I don't see many strikers apart from Rooney/RVP who will be scoring constantly) - can you think of any way I could do that?

I would probably keep Rooney then. Like you allude to, Chelsea's opening fixtures are okay, but you could probably get rid of one of them a few weeks in. Sturridge has a tricky opening few games, so maybe a straight swap of Costa > Sturridge after week 3 or something. If you're keeping Rooney, then you could also downgrade Mata for funds to spread on your defence. Likes of De Jong/Cabella or a Stoke mid seem decent mid-priced options

I'd like to hold onto both Mata and Rooney to start with.just because of fixtures. If Mata isn't doing well - can always sub him out - enough options for his price range. Think he'll do well though. He actually had a fairly good second half of the season.

14 games started - 6 goals, 4 assists with a team that wasn't too high on confidence. If he holds up to that ratio that's something around 16 goals / 10 assists over 38 games. Even if he does a bit lower than that - it's not too bad.

Anyway, I'm down to downgrade Fab and improve my defense... Debating on Tadic or de Jong. Only worry is that they both have a horrifying fixture in GW1 where I would already be playing Pelle vs Liverpool.

Thoughts on Pelle? Any better options there?

Neither City nor Liverpools defence is all that, so it might not be too bad a risk for the first week, and just rely on the rest of your team getting the majority of your points anyway.

I don't like the stuff i read about Pelle, just got a feeling he's not going to do anything great. How about Diouf instead for Stoke? Looks like being ahead of Crouch as a starter with some excellent starting fixtures.

Not 100% sold on Pelle myself... Was taking a gamble just because of fixtures.. Would actually much rather be taking that shot on Tadic for example.

Diouf... seems interesting. Is he ahead of Crouch? He actually did decently at Hannover last year.

If I bring in Diouf over Pelle and De Jong over Fabregas - I have 2.5m left to upgrade defense (while saving 1m for a Costa -> Sturridge switch in a week).

If I go with Tadic over De Jong, it's 2m. Who would you replace in the defense? And lastly, think Chester is more of a lock-in over Figueroa?

Yes, he should be. I'd keep an eye on pre-season, but pretty confident he is. There was talk of Crouch leaving because of the Diouf signing before. Hughes has talked him up in pre-season.

I think i would replace Figueroa and Upson. Yes, Chester is pretty assured of starting. Just had a big injury last season.

Maybe Figueroa and Upson > Chester and a West Ham/Newc/Saints defender too if you can afford?

How about... I replace De Gea / 4m with Mannone/Krul.

And replace Figueroa with Chester. Upgrade Upson to Jones (Verm if he transfers).

Leaves me with 2.5m to spend. Squad is:

                      Mannone - Krul
                      Chester - O'Shea - Mariappa - Cameron - Jones
Ramsey - Mata - Eriksen - De Jong - Albrighton
Rooney - Diego Costa - Diouf

If I upgrade De Jong, can replace him and costa in week 3 for lallana/sturridge.

Sounds like a good plan, like the goalkeeper change.

I'd probably upgrade De Jong out of those then. You don't need to decide on who yet, if you're planning on doing it in week 3, but i'm not keen on Lallana. Think he will be rotated with the wealth of Liverpool attackers. Another option should emerge from another team that we probably wouldn't think about now.

And you're good, thanks. Not got much to work on for now, hoping for some manager insights, and seeing what other bandwagons transpire from the pre-season matches.

                          So finally..

Upgraded De Jong to Fab (back to this again haha, first two fixtures are mouthwatering though - relegation teams with Fab having something to prove / always on song early in the season).

I'll change Fab to someone else depending on signings / form if something comes up.

Also, upgraded O'Shea to Clyne. More variety in defense that way (since I had Mannone at Sunderland already).

                          Sound good?

Yep, sounds excellent to me. Clyne is a good buy, but nearer to the start, if Chambers looks being equally assured, assuming they don't buy a full-back, then you could downgrade to get some extra £ for maybe upgrading Albrighton if you feel like it.

But that's a good plan still. Best of luck

If Wisdom stays at WBA - will definitely downgrade a defender for him as well. Should be a shoe-in to start, correct?

But Wisdom's about to move to West Brom. 😉 Problem solved.

There's also Upson/L.Moore at 4.0 too. But which of them is going to be first choice, is anyones guess at this point.
