After acquiring Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Chelsea returned to the Spanish top-flight to finally complete their summer-long chase for Diego Costa last week. The 25-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a five-year-deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £32m, after Jose Mourinho’s side triggered the release clause in the Spanish international’s Atletico Madrid contract:

Discussing the move with the Blues’ official website, Costa was quick to praise his former side after a sensational season under Diego Simeone’s guidance last time around:

“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea. Everybody knows it is a big club in a very competitive league, and I am very excited to get started in England with a fantastic coach and team-mates. Having played against Chelsea last season I know the high quality of the squad I am joining. I would like to thank everybody at Atletico who made me into the player I am, it was an incredible time for me, but now I am starting a new adventure and I hope to win many trophies with Chelsea.”

The History

It’s fair to say Costa’s career was slow in getting off the ground. The forward was limited to street football in his native Brazil until the age of 16, when he was snapped up Barcelona Esportivo Capela, before signing his first professional contract with Portuguese outfit SC Braga in the summer of 2006.

Quickly loaned out to FC Panafiel Portugal’s second division, Costa grabbed five goals and an assist in 13 appearances before Atletico Madrid signed him up just a few months later. The Spanish outfit remained unconvinced over his abilities and, over the next couple of years, loaned him back to former club Braga (a goal and assist in nine matches) and, subsequently, Spanish Second Division sides Celta Vigo (30 appearances, six goals) and Albacete (35 appearances, nine goals) before selling him to Real Valladolid in 2009, albeit with a buy-back clause inserted in his contract.

While Costa’s nine goals and six assists were unable to prevent his new club from relegation, Atletico took note of his impact for the La Liga strugglers and immediately re-acquired his services for the following season. Starting 2010/11 as a squad member, Costa forced his way into the first-team by the end of the campaign and managed six goals and four assists from 28 appearances before injury curtailed his game time the following year.

Having recovered from a knee complaint, the frontman was loaned out to Rayo Vallecano in the latter half of 2011/12 in order to boost his fitness and served up 10 goals and four assists in just 16 league matches. Back at Atletico the following season, he finally flourished under the guidance of Diego Simeone – 10 goals and 12 assists in 2012/13 preceded 27 strikes and five assists last term as he led his club to their first Spanish title in 18 years, whilst eight goals and a pair of assists in nine Champions League matches helped Atletico to the final, where they were beaten by neighbours Real Madrid.

On the international stage, Costa has been a controversial figure. Having been fielded in a couple of friendlies by Brazil, he chose to turn out for Spanish after being granted Spanish nationality – he’s since played six times and failed to score.

The Prospects

Physically imposing and willing to scrap for every ball up top, Costa looks the ideal forward for Mourinho’s style of play. The 25-year-old is renowned for a somewhat impetuous streak and isn’t afraid to put himself about in the final third – as evidenced by 19 yellow cards in his last two league seasons with Atletico.

Despite splashing significant amounts of cash on forwards over the last few years, the London club have never quite managed to replace the barnstorming displays of Didier Drogba. Similar to the Ivorian, Costa was a relatively late starter in professional football and certainly seems to have the same street-fighter attitude as Drogba, who wreaked havoc on top-flight backlines for a number of seasons. As the new boy admits:

“Boys who grew up playing in academies are taught to control themselves and respect others but no one ever told me otherwise. I didn’t have a school to teach me this. I was used to seeing players elbowing each other in the face and I thought it was the norm.”

Clearly, the Blues boss needs to improve upon last season’s attacking displays. Chelsea finished just four points off the top of the Premier League in The Special One’s first year back at The Bridge despite scoring just 71 times – 30 less than Liverpool and 31 fewer than champions Man City – and it’s arguable that the lack of a world-class frontman was the difference between success and failure.

Although Mourinho wasted little time in instilling a real resilience at the back, with 18 clean sheets delivered and only 27 goals conceded, in the final third, it was a different matter altogether. Whilst Eden Hazard can be exempt of any criticism after serving up 14 strikes from the flank, the Chelsea forwards failed to offer Mourinho a solution- Samuel Eto’o was the most prolific centre-forward with nine goals, as Fernando Torres and Demba Ba chipped in with five apiece.

Already, both Ba and Eto’o have moved on as Mourinho restructures his options. Although the Blues boss has insisted his summer spending is already over, reports suggest that Chelsea are in talks to bring Drogba back as a player-coach – a scenario which could see Romelu Lukaku farmed out on loan once more, with Torres utilised as back-up once again.

Despite just one outstanding season for Atletico, Costa has been handed a premium price tag right across the Fantasy games. Coming in at 10.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 9.5 in Sky Sports, he certainly offers a security of starts and will strengthen the Blues’ close-range potential – all but one of his 27 goals for Atletico last term were scored from inside the area.

Whilst his arrival will undoubtedly bring plenty of investment the Brazilian’s way, there’s a belief that Costa’s work-rate and hold-up play, whether in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 could, in turn, strengthen the Blues’ midfielders points potential. One look at Drogba’s record under Mourinho shows the Ivorian was never too prolific – notching 10 and 12 times in his first couple of campaigns under Jose, Drogba served up 20 goals in 2006/07 in the pair’s final year together in London.

Furthermore, with Frank Lampard now departed, there are question marks as to whether Costa can oust Hazard from the role as number one spot-kick taker; indeed, this could be a potentially decisive factor for many, given that the Belgian is cheaper at 10.0 in FPL. With an opening trip to Burnley preceding home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the first six Gameweeks, Costa certainly has the schedule on his side as he looks to hit the ground running. However, it remains to be seen whether he can replace Hazard in our Fantasy affections or even offer a double-up option as Mourinho looks to bring the title back to Stamford Bridge.

    Bubz, rate my team?

Not sure if I'd rather have Shaw, DDG or no United defender. Also unsure of whether or not I want RVP and Rooney.

    De Gea - Elliot
    Azpilicueta - Ward - C. Davies - Vlaar - Wisdom
    Fabregas - Ramsey - Eriksen - Arnautovic - Albrighton
    Rooney - RVP - Jelavic

How do people approach the start of the season?

My 2 seasons I've started slowly and had to make up a lot of ground so something needs to change.

This year im starting earlier but evolving my team significantly as I absorb the information around new teams, coaches & players, whereas previously I would dedicate a large chunk of time a few days out to crash course the information.

I'm also putting less emphasis on pre season form which seems to be fairly irrelevant to actual season form (boselli the most infamous example but there are many others.

    Anyone else trying something different?

Any fast starters got any tips?

My advice is much like making love... you really should really focus on finishing strong.

"Teams that finished the season in top 10K got there gradually. Only 5% of them were in top 10K after GW5; 16% were there after one of the 5 starting gameweeks. A great start wouldn’t hurt, but it’s far from necessary."

"2,129 teams got there only in the last 2 gameweeks of the season. 305 teams achieved their first top 10K rank of the season after GW38 seizing the last opportunity."

Much like making love to really win you need to start off well, sustain it through the middle AND finish strong.

You won't win it with a poor start

Yep. I speak from experience you need a good start to be up there. Unfortunately a good start is much more of a lottery than when teams and players have settled into it. There's no right formula imo you need a bit of luck early then the skill comes more into it. Spot on about pre-season form though. Means nothing

            Pardon?

I'm showing you stats that only 5% of teams in the final Top 10k were positioned there in GW5.

Also, over 20% of the teams that finished in the Top 10k got there in the last 2 game weeks...

I saw it man. Top 10k is kinda just the minimum expected imo. I finish around there every season. The one season I started well I finished 79th. That's the difference.

"Compared to the final top 10K, the final top 1K teams got into their sacred land later in the season.

Only 22% of them were in top 1K in the middle of the season. 50% got there for the first time during the last third.

The final few gameweeks were very important: 48% of our teams were outside top 1K just 5 gameweeks before the finish."

Again, a good start can't hurt your chances (obv) but it's far from a necessity...

That depends what you consider a good start. Obviously with so many players almost nobody will sit in the top 1k all season. If you spend the first few weeks in the top 100k I think that's a cracking start because the points gaps are smaller early on.

Value has to be Costa in a Chelsea side being supplied by Fabregas, Hazard & Oscar.

Extra 1mil would be Chambers to Jagielka or Lovren (If he joins LIV)

I feel the same way about Costa sir.

A player of his ilk who you'd easily give the armband to coming in at 10.5 seems like great value.

As for your team as a whole, I really like the balance throughout the backline & midfield but, do have serious reservations about Fletcher up front.

Perhaps a pre-season of starts & a few goals will quell my doubts.

I know that Burnley & Hull rotate well so perhaps Ings & a Hull mid could serve you well?

I've dismissed Yaya ever since the prices came, but thinking about it, has anything really changed from the end of last season? He was the same price then, banging them in. Considering the qualities of his penalties, and Aguero's injuries, he could very well be on them too, right?

Might be worth it over Silva

He was affordable due to team value accumulated over the season last year.

With not a penny more than 100mil, hard to get the likes of Sanchez, Hazard, Rooney, RVP, Costa, etc with him included as well.

Surely he can't convert 40% of his chances again, can he!?

    Any idea?

    I'm torn between:

    1. Davis - as I read he will be playing in the hole.
    2. Ward-Prowse - taking all Southampton set pieces.
    3. Fernando - looks like differential to me if he gets minute.
    4. Brady - still think he can deliver if injury free.

Shelvey/Arnie rotation could be good then. For attacking rotations though I don't about home/away so much as opposition defensive ability. I'd just look at Jonjo's first 5 or 6 games and see where I don't fancy him then find someone good that fills in the gaps

Nice idea on doubling up on mid rotation. But I think I would try something different like rotating with Def; because it is easier to see it when it is in Home/Away rotation spreadsheet. Have plenty of 4.5 Def to choose from too.

Ramsey & Yaya had remarkably high SoT% & conversion rates... similar to / higher than players like RVP & Sturridge. So, the term from my stats class was we can 'expect a regression to the mean'.

As for Gerrard, I think he'll be rested / rotated much more with E. Can & Henderson to accommodate Liverpool's Champions League sched & he certainly won't get another 10 PK's accounting for 2/3rds of all his goals.

On the whole, I feel there is better value to be found in the 9+mil price bracket.

Value in the 9+mil price bracket...

          - Hazard has proven himself to be a solid 190+pt scorer under two sets of bonus point systems so I have to say he's a shoo-in for me.

          - D. Silva (when fit) has proven himself to be a consistent fantasy asset averaging over 6pts per game at City last year & could certainly have more if he manages a full sched.

          - Mata is the lowest he's ever been priced at & again he's proven his ability to rack up points averaging 5.5 pts per 90min last year & 7 ppg the year before that.

Walcott, Fabregas, & Nasri are also players I'd be more inclined to include in my team before Ramsey & Yaya.

None of those players if I'm honest. I was keen on Rooney but starting to have doubts now that the transfer rumour mill is in full swing. Will need to see how he is used in pre-season under LVG.

Giroud isn't a bad prospect but I think there are better options amongst the Arsenal ranks. Their mids will surely be a better bet.

Costa is an unknown at this stage so for that reason his hefty price tag represents a risk.

Morning all. I know its way to early to finalize teams but would appreciate some input on my ‘out loud ramblings and thoughts’.

    Mannone/ Krul
    Shaw/ Debuchy/Marriappa/Wisdom/4.0
    Sanchez/ Toure /Albrighton/ Fabregas/ 5.0 (Holilett/Davies /Delph etc)
    Costa/ Rooney/ Jelavic

I am thinking of going for Krul as only keeper. Get in a 4.0 for Mannone. Use the .5 for-

    a. The 4.0 defender to 4.5
    b. The 5.0 mid to a 5.5
    c. Albrighton to a 5.0
    d. Keep the .5 in the bank
    e. Leave it.

I would be quite happy to go with Krul all season, the difference between the goalkeepers scores at the end of the year is minimal in my opinion. Eg-
    2013/2014
    Krul 123
    Boruc 125
    Mingolet 132
    Lloris- 141
    Howard (top scorer)160

The thing is I cant see where that .5 would improve the team, I don’t plan to play the 4.0 defender at all really unless a real emergency.

    Any input welcome

Oh, or Debuchy to a 4.5 and Fab to Hazard! AAAgh, so many options!
