After acquiring Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Chelsea returned to the Spanish top-flight to finally complete their summer-long chase for Diego Costa last week. The 25-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a five-year-deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £32m, after Jose Mourinho’s side triggered the release clause in the Spanish international’s Atletico Madrid contract:

Discussing the move with the Blues’ official website, Costa was quick to praise his former side after a sensational season under Diego Simeone’s guidance last time around:

“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea. Everybody knows it is a big club in a very competitive league, and I am very excited to get started in England with a fantastic coach and team-mates. Having played against Chelsea last season I know the high quality of the squad I am joining. I would like to thank everybody at Atletico who made me into the player I am, it was an incredible time for me, but now I am starting a new adventure and I hope to win many trophies with Chelsea.â€

The History

It’s fair to say Costa’s career was slow in getting off the ground. The forward was limited to street football in his native Brazil until the age of 16, when he was snapped up Barcelona Esportivo Capela, before signing his first professional contract with Portuguese outfit SC Braga in the summer of 2006.

Quickly loaned out to FC Panafiel Portugal’s second division, Costa grabbed five goals and an assist in 13 appearances before Atletico Madrid signed him up just a few months later. The Spanish outfit remained unconvinced over his abilities and, over the next couple of years, loaned him back to former club Braga (a goal and assist in nine matches) and, subsequently, Spanish Second Division sides Celta Vigo (30 appearances, six goals) and Albacete (35 appearances, nine goals) before selling him to Real Valladolid in 2009, albeit with a buy-back clause inserted in his contract.

While Costa’s nine goals and six assists were unable to prevent his new club from relegation, Atletico took note of his impact for the La Liga strugglers and immediately re-acquired his services for the following season. Starting 2010/11 as a squad member, Costa forced his way into the first-team by the end of the campaign and managed six goals and four assists from 28 appearances before injury curtailed his game time the following year.

Having recovered from a knee complaint, the frontman was loaned out to Rayo Vallecano in the latter half of 2011/12 in order to boost his fitness and served up 10 goals and four assists in just 16 league matches. Back at Atletico the following season, he finally flourished under the guidance of Diego Simeone – 10 goals and 12 assists in 2012/13 preceded 27 strikes and five assists last term as he led his club to their first Spanish title in 18 years, whilst eight goals and a pair of assists in nine Champions League matches helped Atletico to the final, where they were beaten by neighbours Real Madrid.

On the international stage, Costa has been a controversial figure. Having been fielded in a couple of friendlies by Brazil, he chose to turn out for Spanish after being granted Spanish nationality – he’s since played six times and failed to score.

The Prospects

Physically imposing and willing to scrap for every ball up top, Costa looks the ideal forward for Mourinho’s style of play. The 25-year-old is renowned for a somewhat impetuous streak and isn’t afraid to put himself about in the final third – as evidenced by 19 yellow cards in his last two league seasons with Atletico.

Despite splashing significant amounts of cash on forwards over the last few years, the London club have never quite managed to replace the barnstorming displays of Didier Drogba. Similar to the Ivorian, Costa was a relatively late starter in professional football and certainly seems to have the same street-fighter attitude as Drogba, who wreaked havoc on top-flight backlines for a number of seasons. As the new boy admits:

“Boys who grew up playing in academies are taught to control themselves and respect others but no one ever told me otherwise. I didn’t have a school to teach me this. I was used to seeing players elbowing each other in the face and I thought it was the norm.”

Clearly, the Blues boss needs to improve upon last season’s attacking displays. Chelsea finished just four points off the top of the Premier League in The Special One’s first year back at The Bridge despite scoring just 71 times – 30 less than Liverpool and 31 fewer than champions Man City – and it’s arguable that the lack of a world-class frontman was the difference between success and failure.

Although Mourinho wasted little time in instilling a real resilience at the back, with 18 clean sheets delivered and only 27 goals conceded, in the final third, it was a different matter altogether. Whilst Eden Hazard can be exempt of any criticism after serving up 14 strikes from the flank, the Chelsea forwards failed to offer Mourinho a solution- Samuel Eto’o was the most prolific centre-forward with nine goals, as Fernando Torres and Demba Ba chipped in with five apiece.

Already, both Ba and Eto’o have moved on as Mourinho restructures his options. Although the Blues boss has insisted his summer spending is already over, reports suggest that Chelsea are in talks to bring Drogba back as a player-coach – a scenario which could see Romelu Lukaku farmed out on loan once more, with Torres utilised as back-up once again.

Despite just one outstanding season for Atletico, Costa has been handed a premium price tag right across the Fantasy games. Coming in at 10.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 9.5 in Sky Sports, he certainly offers a security of starts and will strengthen the Blues’ close-range potential – all but one of his 27 goals for Atletico last term were scored from inside the area.

Whilst his arrival will undoubtedly bring plenty of investment the Brazilian’s way, there’s a belief that Costa’s work-rate and hold-up play, whether in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 could, in turn, strengthen the Blues’ midfielders points potential. One look at Drogba’s record under Mourinho shows the Ivorian was never too prolific – notching 10 and 12 times in his first couple of campaigns under Jose, Drogba served up 20 goals in 2006/07 in the pair’s final year together in London.

Furthermore, with Frank Lampard now departed, there are question marks as to whether Costa can oust Hazard from the role as number one spot-kick taker; indeed, this could be a potentially decisive factor for many, given that the Belgian is cheaper at 10.0 in FPL. With an opening trip to Burnley preceding home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the first six Gameweeks, Costa certainly has the schedule on his side as he looks to hit the ground running. However, it remains to be seen whether he can replace Hazard in our Fantasy affections or even offer a double-up option as Mourinho looks to bring the title back to Stamford Bridge.

As mentioned on a previous page, I have built a pretty decent database that looks at teams by fixture difficult. It's useful for finding two, three or even more-way rotations!

If you want to know how a team can combine with another team either for clean sheets/attacking points, just let me know.

No problem, there are better rotations but that doesn't necessarily mean more points e.g. given the form of Chambers etc. as you will have already identified.

I think everyone need a stoke asset in defense for at least till GW 12. 🙂

    Home matches:
    GW1: Aston Villa
    GW4: Leicester
    GW6: Newcastle
    GW8: Swansea
    GW10: West Ham
    GW12: Burnley

I know stoke rotates well with Swansea, but is there a three-way rotation with stoke as one of the teams?

I'm guessing Cameron over Bardsley personally.

Bards had a pretty poor season at Sunderland, seems to have lost a bit of his mojo.

Whereas Cameron had a decent season. But it's all guesswork I'm afraid

        That's what I have 🙂

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Sanchez and Schurrle cost the same as Fabregas and Ramsey (18m) but I am just wondering if Schurrle's WC form will flow into the season and if he'll get more playing time as a result...

What's your take on Herrera? His passing game is almost immaculate. I'd love to see he and Mata partner up behind Rooney and RVP with Di Maria and Valencia out wide...

FWIW Valencia is also ridiculously cheap this season @ a mere 6m.

Sorry if you have already seen this update bu just in case:

I have written a community article about the VS update but it is either taking a while to go up or not going up so I thought I'd post a bit about it here.

Many of you will have seen my New Players Analysis on the community article section. This new update has more players including Enner Valencia and Filipe Luis.

I have also added more players to the promoted clubs section so there is more information for you to have a look at.

The biggest update is the VS section. I asked the community which players they were struggling to choose between and have compared them.

With prices released I have also calculated each player's ''value.

Anyway, all the info is on the document. I hope the article is published soon so you can all see it or this is HTpiced instead.

So Van Gaal's first signing to be announced soon...

What's the story with Herrera? Who was in charge of that deal? Seems mad that such a big signing would be brought in without Van Gaal's approval, what if he is not in his plans, etc.?

Over the next few days I'd say, but no hints were given.

Ed Woodward said a lot was going on behind the scenes and to "watch this space" so I'm expecting something soon, probably Vermaelen of De Vrij

I know a lot of people on here are say 3-4-3 is better than 3-5-2 but let me ask you this.

Who is your third striker? Because I bet you could think of a fifth midfielder for the same price thats better.

    Example: siggy for 6.0

By the way, before everyone gets too settled on their teams, you do know that there are going to be a few epic signing coming from Man Utd yet before the season starts don't you.

And I'm talking of Vidal proportions (though not necessarily him by the looks of it)

I'm going to make a bold prediction and say that Man Utd will finish second behind Chelsea this year. Forget what you think about Utd based on last year. LVG is a shrewd operator and with no Europe we could easily 'do a Liverpool'. So best load up once it becomes clearer who'll be playing where and who's signed on the dotted line.

*Off to fetch my tin hat*

I didnt say bold prediction for nothing 🙂

In all seriousness, I have that much faith in LVG and his philosophy, I think we can even over-take Man City. A lot will depend on who Man Utd sign, how far City go in Europe, Aguero's hamstrings and most importantly luck. But it's possible!

Have recently conducted a study of number of incoming transfers a club makes , and the clubs resulting lewgue position after six matches.
The survey clearly showed a correlation. Generally, as may be expected the more transfers in a club has during pre season the worse they perforn over the first six matches.

Previous seasons surveys ran till the end of august.
Its early days yet in the transfe market, with more than a month left, but at this stage Based on my analysis several clubs are going to struggle early on , southampton being one.

i will write a proper article for the scouts if i find time, although i did the research for betfair reasons , not fantasy ones.

Isn't the idea that Ivanovic and Luis will get forward more from full back and Azpil is cover for both?
It's harsh cos he played really well last year, but Luis's signing seems to show that's what JM wants

Who do you think will be the best FPL Arsenal mid this season?

    A. Sanchez (10.5 m): Costly, Not proven in EPL, World-class season at Barca
    B. Ramsey (9 m): Have a great season last year. Consistency??
    C. Ozil (9 m): World-class player but his form is rather declining.
    D. Cazorla (8.5 m): Good Player but a bit overlooked, reduced role last season

Hoping for your advice d/t I'm having a hard time figuring out whose gonna be in my team.

I think Sanchez because he can score goals and provided a heap of assists to his name. Whereas Ozil will most likely claim more assists than goals. Ramsey might be hot and cold this season. Cazorla will rotate with Sanchez or Walcott.

tbh honest I'm all set on Ramsey. But then Sanchez's ownership is really frightening - imagine if he's off to a lying start and you don't own him.

Luckily we'll have the Community Shield (or any new name of it) to reasess Arsenal attacking options.

I'm sorry. I'm new in this, so; why his ownership is frightening? Is it because his price will sky rocket after GW1 or because you will fall short in term of overall points compared to other people that owned him?

        Cheers.

The latter. Some players with huge ownership you really need to cover to not go backwards in the rankings. On the other end of the spectrum the right differentials (low ownership) is what will take you forward in the rankings

Cheers. I thought that would influencing players price.

So, while we at it, how does player price rise and fall? I read the other day, the price will rise once less managers bought the players (or selling him during the round). It doesn't makes sense to me. Because before this I'm under the impression of players price will rise once many managers start buying the players.

Can you shed some light regarding this? Thank you.

Players will rise 0.1 when enough managers buy them I think around 30 thousandish. Rises are capped at 3 per week so 0.3 is the most they can rise in a week. The threshold increases with each rise too. Falls are different. Give me a sec I'll look for an old article explaining it properly.

After posting about Naismith earlier, someone asked about Kone as well so I thought i’d do a bit on those everton players people are picking here:

Naismith - Naismith can deliver when he plays. We saw last season that he can assist and score when he is playing. The problem is where to play him. He is not physical enough to be a striker and not better than Lukaku or any new striker we sign. We have so many wingers (Mirallas, Pienaar, McGeady, maybe osman) all of which are ahead of him. He seems good in the no 10 hole but a certain ross barkley is occupying that. Personally, I'd leave it down to who we sign. If we sign a new striker his stock won't go down but if we sign any new midfielders then definitely don't bother. He is a utility player and will play anywhere. Overall, if your bench is strong enough he could pay off. As i said when he comes on he delivers. You may get 5 points every 3 weeks or so is what i'd guess.

Kone – He had an injury riddled season but is fit now. I follow him on social media and he posts regular updates and he is pre-season training with everyone else. So fitness is not a concern. Again it depends on signings. At the moment he is first choice. If we sign a target man he will be a bench player. However if we sign a more direct player e.g. Alessio Cerci, i could see us going 2 up top sometimes with barkley dropping out as Martinez is quite cautious with him. So, if we don’t sign anyone (hopefully we do) or we sign a forward who can’t play target man then get him.

Barkley – He is great but hasn’t found that consistency. BAPs will be kinder this season but Martinez will sub him off happily. There’s not much more to say, it will be the same as last season.

Mirallas – Seems to be in a lot of teams. I would advise you not. He is not a good player fpl wise. He doesn’t rack up goals or assists yet. He is my favourite Everton player but I wish he was better near goal. He hasn’t really settled into English football but he has the potential to. If he gets on a good run it will be the making of him as a player. So don’t start with him but if he hits a purple patch jump on board that bandwagon!

Mcgeady – get if pienaar or mirallas is injured if we don’t sign a new winger. Fitness is a concern though, would be a good punt.
Stones won’t feature all too much, again unless there is injury.

That's all you need to know really!

You have got a good balanced team. But here is what i feel.
1)Courtois- Given that you have gone the uber route in defense,he is a godd pick.Otherwise i wouod have advocated some other GK.

            2) RvP/Rooney is a must in the start. They have some very good fixtures and you couod lose a lot of ground if they score. I read in one of the United forums thatbRooney and RvP may play together with Mata just behind them.If that is the case Rooney + Mata would be really cool.. Also swapping tgem for Costa/Sturridge later if needed will also be easier.

            3) Since you have Sanchez, Don't think Giroud is a necessity given the fixtures. The best strike force given the fixtures would be RvP/Rooney, Costa/Dzeko, Bony.

Cheers Bluey. I like the idea of having Rvp cos it allows a swap to any expensive striker that hits form and he looks a good gw1 captain. From that team above I swapped courtouis for Speroni/Gilks combo (Or any 9.0 combo if Gilks isn't #1), Mata for Shelvey/Snod and Giroud for Rvp. Looks better I think with the expensive striker

Sagna, Evans, Nasri all vulnerable to rotation. You don't want one of Arnie and Tadic to ride the pine every week, they're too expensive to do that.

Yea this team is really bad.

I was constructive on your post earlier, but this... needs a complete rework.

      I'll be constructive anyway.

Start with this and build around.

Vlaar, Wisdom, Albrighton, Eriksen, Azpilicueta, Ward, Sanchez/Ramsey

Work around that in a 3-4-3. That's a template start, use the remaining open slots to build your best squad.

    New team. Thoughts?

    Krul Mannone
    Debuchy Ward Azpillicueta Cameron Long
Hazard Fabregas Mata De Jong Shelvey
    Rooney Dzeko Ings

    What changes sould i do?

Will Vermaelen be nailed on?. I mean, i think that Wenger would line Merte and Kons.

    Thanks in advance.

Mert and Kos are first choice at Arsenal

Perfect. I didnt know that verma could join united. If that's the case then im doing debu -> Vermaelen

I have a few concerns about Azpi too. I dont know if he's nailed on.
