After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

Any thoughts on my team would be very appreciated.

    Courtois
    Debuchy / Davies / Verm
    Hazard / Mata / Eriksen / Assaidi
    RVP / Giroud / Dzeko

    Gilks / Albrighton / Wisdom / Upson

    0.5m in the kitty.

The bench players may change depending who look the best options at their rock bottom prices but either way they will just stay as pure bench fodder.

Assaidi is a gamble but at 5.0m and a player who Mark Hughes likes I think he is worth the risk if he will perform anywhere near as good as on his loan spell he will be great value for money.

Too big of a gamble for 5.0m? You do realise I mean for him if he gets his move to Stoke? He was one of Stoke's best players toward the end of last season.

Yeah there is definitely competition for places but I really see Assaidi being one to nail down a spot in the XI. But you're right he isn't nailed on.

I think with his low price and Stoke's early fixtures he's worth the punt.

To start with yes, until he started showing his potential and then ended up as one of Stoke's biggest attacking threats in the latte part of the season IMO.

Rooney versus RVP headache is killer. The extra 2 million make such a massive difference to the squad but everything just seems ripe for an explosive start for RVP.

    Krul Mannone

    Rafael Davies Coloccini Vlaar Wisdom

    Mata Ramsey Fabregas Siggy Albrighton

    Aguero Rooney Remy
    0ITB

Defence - Obviously dependent on Davies' and Wisdom's moves. Rafael can be changed to any other Man Utd 5.5 defender who looks more likely to start.

Midfield - Dependant on Siggy's move to Palace

Forwards - Hopefully Remy will be starting at Liverpool. Is it too top heavy?

    Thank you 🙂

Guys, I need some help with my team. I am currently a bit worried that my defense is too weak, altough I like the stoke/swansea home/away rotation and the newcastle/west brom fixture difficulty rototation so that's why I have chosen for a rather cheap defense. Up front I am quite happy altough I may downgrade RvP to Costa to be able to upgrade Ozil to Sanchez. Thoughts...?

    Krul/Foster
    Cameron/Debuchy/Pocognoli/Williams/Coloccini
    Arnautovic/Mata/Ozil/Eriksen/Delph

couple more things to throw into the rvp early gameweek danger.

rvp himself is almost only half the story. it's also luxury of alternatives. with rooney and mata man utd are very well stocked in this area. we've also identified that man utd have the best fixture list to start (not that van gaal will ever take the piss or risks).

wenger benched rvp for the first two gameweeks of last season. fellow world cup finalist fabregas was so behind he didnt even make the gw1 squad then came on as sub in gw2 http://www.arsenal.com/match/report/1011/pre/first-team/liverpool-v-arsenal
    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/-match-fitness-a-vital-factor-in-selection-

different manager of course, but the same physiology, very literally in van persie's case.

van gaal's bayern at start of 2010/11:
august 7th super cup - klose, lahm, schweinsteiger and muller all started, van bommel rested.
august 20th league opener - klose, lahm, schweinsteiger, muller and van bommel all start.

whether van gaal came out and said any of those players were exhausted after the WC i have no idea.

i really want rvp and ozil this season but am fairly certain not to start with either. you want assurances for those prices (especially if you're captaining) and ozil has cazorla who can keep his seat warm at the start, along with arsenal having the community shield and 2 CL qualifiers squeezed in. it's a messy start.
you could even go sturridge with 1mil in the bank in case the fears are unfounded

Question is - how far did a player have to go into the tournament to be affected?
      Ie. Rooney, Dzeko, Sanchez?
These guys were eliminated from 24-28 June but they still effectively trained for 1 month longer than their counterparts not featuring in the World Cup
Even if this just means they got less of a break, they could still technically be 2 weeks behind in fitness meaning the opening 3 GWs could be both unpredictable and unrepresentative of the rest of the season

wouldnt really be concerned about anyone who went out before the semis, so none of them.
also depends on the player, and in general the playing position. for example if mertesacker had a world cup final the week before gw1 i'd back him to start

With Man U's fixtures I think at least one of their attackers would be useful. Sturridge -> Rooney imo.

I'm playing in a 6-man draft league. Transfer priority every 3 weeks to pick up any unchosen/ dropped players, so can get rid of long term injuries.

I have 2nd pick, not sure who number 1 will take.

Who are your top 2 players in FPL?

I think so although its hard to assess RK's preferences as yet. He'll be on corners and can pick a pass, I think he'll get decent game time.

At 6.0 milion would you rather have

    a) Crouch - Plum fixtures to start off with, no space for Arnautovic in my team.

    b) Long/Jelavic - Decent fixtures, but Europe concerns.

Shows how easy Man United's fixtures really are. They have the lowest rating even with the fixtures against Burnley, QPR and Leicester. Funny to see Palace so high up there, but without taking into consideration our games against Leicester and Burnley, we do have some tough games

The problem I have starting with Sanchez is if he has a blank or 2, he'll drop like a stone and it'd seem silly to shift so early if you've backed him. If he does well, Theo isn't far away, and I'd rather have him at 9.0. Offers an easy catch up route.

Adopted a similar strategy last season with avoiding Sturridge and getting Suarez. I lost out, but not by much at all
