After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

Too expensive to rotate, either is a good pick but maybe Arnie from the start as he's settled in the Stoke team and it's easier to downgrade than upgrade if you decide to change them.

I've probably read 70 pages of comments the last three days, so these are a composite of the criticisms for each player since you wanted it torn apart

You don't have a backup keeper which also means you'll be missing out on the price rises you could get from two cheap keepers

      Luis will be rotated

Debuchy's early fixtures aren't any good

Wisdom probably won't start with Gamboa coming in

Sanchez isn't proven and could be rested for Champion's League with all those other midfield options

Fabregas will be playing too deep

Holtby will start ahead of Eriksen

Sigurdsson... geez... no one's said a bad thing about the guy

RVP is too expensive, will be rested from early games and makes the rest of your team weaker due to his price

Dzeko is subject to rotation and halftime replacement

Giroud may not always start and could be rotated too now with Sanchez in the mix

also, Dzeko and Giroud will lose a lot of bonus because they miss a lot

Elliott is one of the worst keepers on a Prem squad

      Albrighton is unlikely to start

Palace will bring in someone else to start ahead of Mariappa

Yun is a punt on a terrible team that will be relegated and you could do better punting on Targett at least

wow thats a big reply mate. i should have mentioned my teams is for the first 3GW only as im going to be wildcarding

Luis will play all 3 as far as im concerned

Debuchy should get atleast 2/3 cleanies, attacking potential

I don't care how unproven Sanchez is, he is world class, not missing out

Fabregas may even play no.10 to start with because oscar may be eased in from the world cup. brilliant fixtures and even if he plays double pivot there is no problem as shown with yaya/ramsey last year

No way holtby will play over erik

i thought the same about RVP but hes mainly there just for the safe C option GW1 if he looks unfit can get anyone i want

Dzeko is nailed imo for the first 3 with kun not 100% fit, negredo imjured

Giroud will start early for sure (im an arsenal fan)

the non playing keeper is a viable tactic, its more important to be happy about the team you have getting points rather than cash, he 0.5 is handy

The cheap defenders are all flexible at this point in time.

Depends on where Sigurdsson moves; If he moves to Swansea, go for Puncheon and if he goes to CPL, pick Shelvey.

He is bound to be the main playmaker in whichever team he goes to, with his share of freekicks / corners / penalties.

          Sigurdsson is a no brainer.

If he goes to CPL (they had agreed on a fee), then Shelvey becomes a better choice over PUNCHEON.

If Siggy goes to Swansea, perhaps Puncheon is a better bet over SHelvey.

yes agree if he went to CPL, Shelvey is a better pick then puncheon.

But if Siggy goes to swansea, surely you should pick him over both Puncheon AND Shelvey??

First, Siggy would be in a more attacking team in a more advanced position. Shelvey would be in a deeper role. Not to say Puncheon is a bad pick, but statistically Swansea are a better unit and arguably, and Siggy has better FPL potential as a player and as part of that unit.

Till now they have no other player who can fill the role of a creative playmaker.

Rooney is not cut out for the role - he's great as a second striker, but not playmaker. Herrera is still untested in the EPL, and plus is expected to play much deeper. Kagawa is fast turning out to be a flop, unless he drastically turns things around.

The only player who may play in the same place is Janu - he's still a bit young and extremely inconsistent.

Mata has had time to get a hang of the team, and would be brilliant supplying Roo and RVP the balls they need. Can also have a fair share of free kicks.

don't like spurs fixtures and they were garbage in defence recently
cameron + wilson might not play
there are a lot of midfielders more expensive than your guys that you might want to switch to...just for starters think hazard

I think with Poch in Spurs have a chance and at 5mil Davies is worth a punt. You are right on the hazard front though - but not sure I can squeeze him in without downgrading costa to a cheap striker and I prefer the cheap mids compared to cheap strikers

Some good captaincy options but maybe you have expended a little too much on your strikers to the detriment of your midfield? Mid-priced midfielders always promise a lot but at the end of the day only 1 or 2 a season ever reach the heights of a big hitter

      Costa and De Jong.

In either case, your midfielder is less of a risk - Hazard nothing new to say, and De Jong has a fantastic pedigree and is widely expected to hit the ground almost running, especially with Newcastle's kind fixtures.

Costa is a bit of a punt; but I personally think (as a Chelsea fan) that he will either light the league on fire or will risk being another Fernando. Worth the risk, especially with the first two games set for him to score easy.

    Morning guys.
I posted the 1st draft of my team earlier this morning and it was absolutly battered by you guys. Thankfully you made me see the light and come up with this second draft

    Krul/Mannone
    Roseneir/Cameron/Mariappa/Ben davies/Phil Jones
    Ramsey/Hazard/Mata/Snodgrass/Albrighton
    Pelle/Costa/Rooney

What do you guys think ? Is pelle worth the punt? Am I overly loading on manu players? Should I consider fabregas or sanchez instead of hazard and ramsey ?

    Appreciated
    Thanks.

Not sure about all of the Mata hate, I know we don't have a clue how he'll be used, but United's fixtures are beautiful and I trust Van Gaal to at least USE Mata, even on the left wing or something like that, he'll still get points with those fixtures.

And there's a sneaky chance of LVG bringing back in a Sneijder role for Mata as CAM which would make him the most valued player in the game (considering he didn't rotate with Roonpig)

I think he's not as good there but I wouldn't say he's terrible. Just think that it was the way Moyes set up the team which was very rigid, never anybody to pass to, lots of distance between players. He could still be decent off-centre as I think he did play on the left at Valencia where he was excellent.

He was scoring about 10 goals a season from the left wing for Valencia and assisting even more, I think it was more United being terrible last season, Mata has the ability to make it work from the left.

He hasn't done much yet from the wing at United but I think LVG will completely change the way United play football this season.

No I'm not saying that, Mourinho is completely different to Van Gaal, LVG is all about his "footballing philosophy" and he likes using players who are technically good that will play a Dutch brand of football.

Mourinho likes power, pace and structure, with a bit of flair thrown into his pacey players (Ronaldo, Willian, Oscar, Di Maria, etc) and therefore Mata didn't suit Jose's style of team, he could be the Sneijder player for LVG though.
