After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

Midfielders I REALLY want to own:

    Sanchez
    Ramsey
    Fabregas
    Hazard
    Eriksen
    De Jong
    Tadic
    Sigurdsson

And that (foolishly?) ignores Yaya, Silva, Ozil, Mata...

I honestly think any and all of those could have fantastic seasons and be well worth their price tags, I don't remember it being like this for years 😕

I dropped Sturridge for it though.

Agree with you some diffs in there could do really well, Tadic, Siggy
          Erikson Hazard set pieces etc.
          Sanchez.

          Those 5 I have.

Could be a nonsensical post this but hopefully it should make sense...

Comparing Southampton with Swansea of 2012

Laudrup replacing successful Rodgers who'd built both a successful defence and attack in just one season of Prem football
Loss of key players such as Allen, Sinclair, Caulker and Siggy
BUT bought the like's of Michu and Hernandez and the former was an incredibly successful vfm bandwagon but of course a relative unknown
Swansea started that season on fire albeit with a better fixture (qpr) than Soton have this year (liv)

      So...

Newcomer Koeman could be the equivalent of Laudrup, Rodgers left for a top 6 team as Poch has done (kind of irrelevant as is Davies being Targett's equivalent but hey)
Loss of key players such as Lambert, Lallana, Shaw and Lovren
Tadic and Pelle are both big bandwagons, particularly the former
      Great opening fixtures for Soton

There seems to be a general theme this year where the top teams have 1 nailed on striker and then a load of generously priced midfielders playing off them, with the exception being United having 2 strikers and 1 midfielder to choose from.

Chelsea - Haz, Oscar, Cesc, Willian, Schurrle ----- Diego Costa.

Liverpool - Coutinho, Lallana, Markovic, Gerrard, Sterling ----- Studge

Arsenal - Sanchez, Ozil, Rambo, Caz, Wally ----- Giroud

City - Yaya, Silva, Nasri ----- Dzeko (Kun not in a single RMT yet)

United - Mata ----- RVP, Rooney.

It is for this reason that I see Mata as my top priority mid to start with, even if he plays out on the wing and is hindered, I expect LVG's Dutch style to suit him more than Moyes' outdated form of defensive Everton football. Plus United have the best fixtures to start off with.

Also worth noting that Dzeko and Giroud offer a route into some of the most attacking sides in the league for outstanding value at 8.5 when Costa, Rooney, RVP, Kun, Studge are all at least 2 mill more expensive and those other teams have an abundance of 9.0 mids to choose from to "cover" (I know, I know) those teams' attacking outputs.

Totally agree with you on Mata. I think I will go Costa over Giroud, but that is due to balance in the team. I want Eriksen and Mata because I think they offer great value. I dont dare to go without Sanchez so then it is no room for a Chelsea mid. I have thought about choosing Giroud and Hazard over Costa and Eriksen but it feels a bit boring. What do you think?

Still in confusion when it comes to defenders..
Am planning to go with 3-4-3 or 3-5-2, so is it worth going with the 3 good defenders (1 each from United, Chelsea and Arsenal) and 2 cheapies or should I go with 2 good defenders (1 each from united and chelsea because of good fixtures) and 3 rotational cheapies?

For me, it depends who you're backing them up with in nets. If you've got a 4.5m goalkeeper then i'd say three good defenders. If you've a 5.5-6m gk then stick it 2 and rotate the third.

Here we go, first RMT of the season:

            De Gea (Krul)

Debuchy - Filipe Luis - Davies (Mariappa - Wisdom)

            Sanchez - Oscar - Mata - Eriksen - Snodgrass

            Remy - Rooney (Naismith)

Still very much WIP until GW1

This you need either Hazard or Costa. They're both potential Captain whereas Oscar is not.

I wasn't quite decided on Costa or Rooney. I'm going to see how they both perform, and in Rooney's case where he plays, over pre-season then make a decision.

            Thoughts on my current draft?
If Palace don't sign anyone I will probably opt with Debuchy and Mariappa.

            De Gea, Myhill

Filipe Luis, Davis/Debuchy, Ward/Mariappa, Cameron, Wisdom

            Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Albrighton

            RVP, Dzeko, Austin

            How's this looking:

            Mannone Krul
            Terry Coloccini Mariappa (Wisdom Duff)
            Hazard Ramsey Eriksen Arnautovic (Albrighton)
            RvP Dzeko Bony

Would like some help deciding between:
            1. Sanchez and Fabregas vs Hazard and Ramsey +0.5
            2. Two out of Dzeko, Bony, Giroud and Pelle.

            Cheers.

He'll play with Sakho I think. Better than Skrtel (though I've seen him make plenty of mistakes) but inferior to Agger.

Agger still the best CB there but won't be used as BR doesn't like having both him and Sakho (both being left footed) playing. Realistically it should be Agger and Lovren but how will they justify spending £18 million on Sakho?

Any suggestions for adjustments welcome. Think Morisson on the bench will suit me better than Albrighton as he has bigger upside potential.

              Schmeichel (Krul)
Flanagan / Luis / Davies (Targett / Wisdom)
              Mata / Mirallas / Hazard / Siggy (R.Morisson)

Javier Saviola is targeting a move to England after agreeing to part company with Olympiakos. The 32-year-old moved to Athens last summer on a two-year deal from Malaga, but he could finally be heading to the Premier League. Swansea and Queens Park Rangers are among the clubs understood to be taking a keen interest in Saviola.

Anyone thinking of Leonardo Ulloa as a third striker. He's got a great record, albeit against weaker opposition. He has a scoring ratio of 1 in 2.

Yep...although sad to see him leave. He's a very clinical striker that is capable of getting 10 PL goals if he can be a certain starter. I'd say 6m would be reasonable for him. 6.5m presents more of a challenge. 7m and above would be overpriced. If he's 5.5m I'd definitely get him in and use the money for the midfield.

I think he'll come in at 6.5m given his record. If he's 6m I'll also get him, a big re-shuffle will be needed, but then that's half the fun.

Too much money in the defence I think, especially since Trippier is on your bench. Pretty risky team with a lot of people who haven't played in the premier league before but it could work out.

I'm thinking less ball will go through Haz now that Fab is there. He opens a whole new avenue into the front third and a class that Chelsea have missed since Mata stopped playing regularly... While I think it is a slight over read to say that it will damage his prospects irrefutably it's food for thought.

just toying with the 'my tables' feature... is there any way to see those stats alone? or do you just make a table and look at it that way?

              Thanks in advance 🙂

Some stats separate on top left. Otherwise you need to build the table to compare the specifics you want.

Most of the stats are available under player stats if you wanted to look at those in isolation. But the best way to see it is make the table and look at it there. Make sure you press the public view button on the bottom so that everyone can see them.

To narrow down the selection try filtering to things like minimum 20 starts 2013/14 or minimum 10 goals if you are looking for a sharp shooting forward.
