After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

Thoughts on Siggy? Are we letting his former exploits at Swansea cloud our judgement or is he a great option once again?

Big RMT, please help if you can

Been playing around with my team for a while now but its down to these last choices....

    Fabregas vs Hazard
Both proven in PL, but who will do better - is Haz worth the extra mill?
    Sanchez vs Ramsey
1.5 mill difference and Sanchez, while he had a good world cup, is unproven in PL

Do I use a united defender, due to the fact that they had such a poor defensive season last year?

Is only investing heavily in my midfield and having two decent forwards and having one... worse a decent tactic?

    My team:

    Schmiechel,De Gea - Happy

Cahill, Vlaar (dependant on move), Bruce, Jones, Debuchy - I think relatively strong

Fab/Haz, Silva, Sanchez/Ramsey, Mata, Albrighton - Very happy with midfield if i can choose between the two pairs

Giroud, Dzeko, Naismith (or any alternatives) - Dzeko because of Negredo injury, weakest part of team

        Mata, Ramsay, Siggy, Eriksen, Fabregas

Massive potential of goals and assists in there.

that decision on the mid's is also taking over my life (maybe a bit of an exaggeration).

i want Cesc and Sanchez, but worried about having two relatively new players in the PL. may go safe and go Cesc and Ramsey to start and see what happens.

Agreed. Once I started looking a bit more closely at the Krul Mannone rotation it was clear that it's not great at all. I've ended up with Courtois + 4.0mil.

It's a mil more expensive but a Chelsea Df will set u back that much or more anyway and I've saved myself rotation headaches

Very similar to mine, but I don't have sturridge due to fixtures. And I went for RVP instead of Rooney. Midfield could be more balanced is what most people would say, but this midfield is identical to mine. Watch Luis for position / game time preseason ofc.

Keeper spot is looking weak, but other than that I like it a lot.

    Mannone - Krul

    Debuchy - Huth - Chambers - Wisdom - Duff

    Hazard - Fabregas - Mata - Eriksen - Albrihgton

    Rooney - Dezko - Giroud

    - I think Giroud is safe bet until Walcott is back (after that Sanchez may play up front).
    - I'm gonna double up Chelsea midfield for the tasty opening fixtures. After the Leicester match I will make my decision which one to stay.

    1.
    A) Giroud, Fabregas, Chambers
    or
    B) Jelavic, Özil / Sanchez, Shaw

    2.

Pellé V Tadic - Who will be Southampton's super saint?

Looking at both players, they both have amazing stats in the Dutch league.... Pellé really starting to tempt me up front instead of Giroud. Gives me an extra few quid for the midfield area/ defence 😕

The forward spot is vital. Moreover Tadic has crosses, set-pieces, corners, pens. Pelle has a record of getting booked. Convinced now? 😉

Pelle won't create anything for himself. He'll rely on others to hand him chances, while Tadic will create chances for everyone and score a couple himself. And he'll be on penalties.

Yeah, Tadic is a good player. The only caveat here, at least IMO, is that the PL is a lot faster than the Eredivisie and I'm not entirely convinced he'll be able to cope, or at least not directly.

De Jong is industrious, so should be fine. I have him in my team right now and not Tadic, but that's also because I like having him and Eriksen in there next to each other. I see him doing well though at Newcastle.

De gea Myhill Debuchy Filipe Luis and 3 4.5 guys, currently Chambers Mariappa Chester, but they'll be swapped around when it's clear who will play. Sanchez is a certainty for me with some 4.5 guy who will play and the rest of the midfield is Eriksen De Jong and Arnautovic for now. Costa RVP and Jelavic up front.

Yeah, was 3k or so after two weeks, then plummetted and finally reached top 100k after Christmas again. Bad luck and bad choices all around.

De Jong is more like Michu, scoring goals, not creating as much. Tadic is the midfield creator type. Most of his goals are from set pieces IIRC.

Defence is really weak and there are a lot of rotation risks. Mariappa, Chambers, Cameron i wouldn't say are nailed on. Burnley are after a new CB to replace Duff and even WBA might sign Gamboa which would give Wisdom some competition.

Who, if anyone, are you getting as Citys attacking cover?

Dzeko: Finished last season well, and with Negredo's injury has a decent chance of starting

Aguero: Always a great FPL option, when fit. But just coming from a WC final, not 100% and his price are putting me off.

Yaya: Did very well last season, but it may have just been a fluke and he is very expensive.

Silva: Great player, just not always in terms of FPL points. Also £2 cheaper than Yaya.

Nasri: Cheapest Man City attacker, and could have a very good start with his rest this summer.

I am ranking them like this at the minute:
    1) Dzeko
    2) Nasri
    3) Silva
    4) Aguero
    5) Yaya

    Thoughts?

Just had a quick research and came up with a team,
I know it won't be final but would appreciate a RMT

First one and only one until last few days. Promise!

    Krul / Mannone

    Terry, Coleman/Baines, Cameron, Wisdom, Chester

    Siggy, Sanchez, Eriksen, Fabregas

    Costa, Dzeko, Remy

Not so sure on Costa to be honest, but cant imagine him not scoring with such a strong Chelsea side.

    Thanks

    2 questions for y'all:

    1) How many players in your latest draft are new to their clubs (and how many of those are new to the league) - I'm currently on 8 (4)

    2) Who do you envisage your captain being come GW1 (and yes I know it's very early days, just interested is all....)?
I'm thinking Rooney if his pre-season form and position are looking desirable. Sanchez (vc)

    too many options

Davies at Spurs makes me want Spurs defence, though the fixtures are off putting. As Wakey has pointed out, last seasons early CS bandwagons were teams with nice fixtures (Saints and Arsenal) this time around that belongs to United and a Stoke/Swansea rotation, with room for one more (which I then guess depends on personal preference). I think I may write an article on how key this is

I want Mata in midfield but there is just no spot without going 3-5-2.

I plan to have all decent front 8 mainly to make it easier to catch a bandwagon early - don't want to be stuck with a cheap mid or striker then want to switch. Jelly is there mainly because I want Snod but can't fit him in. May go RVP,Rooney,5.5/5.0 and De Jong over Arnie.

All 3 promoted clubs cover him very well. I prefer Burnley backline. Only Speroni could work, I always have 2 playing

Considered it, but Swansea look awful at the back. Plus side, they look awesome in attack!

am really tempted to just play 3 every week

Rafa/Verm, Davies and one more just not sure who else for 5.0 or less i trust enough to play every every week

Major boost for him is how big he is, a lot of foreign imports to the PL have an issue with physicality but he's a feckin monster.

Strong no 9 goal poacher. I think the look of him, even though he probably won't have pens.

Finding it hard to capitalise on the good value on offer in midfield, without wrecking my front line.

    Currently have.

    ...

    De Gea (Krul)

    Vertonghen, Debuchy, Azpillicueta (O'Brien, Upson)

Sanchez, Hazard, Mata, Siggy (De Jong)

    Giroud, Pelle, Fletcher

    ...

Will monitor Azpi's playing time - recon the rest should probably start. Any thoughts?

Id downgrade Mata and get Rooney/RVP. Dont think Krul is necessary, but looks as though youve thought about it and think you need a back up keeper. Not a fan of vertonghen.

There is no front line to wreck imo.
Lots of cash at the back.

It very much depends on LVG and his formation, style, favoured players etc. Keep an eye on pre-season games and see if Mata plays, if he does A easily.

Not many going for Stirling so far, people thinking he will not be a regular starter?

While Dzeko looks like a nice, cheap enough way into the City attack, I just don't think it's a great idea. I think we'll be seeing a lot more of Jovetic this season that we might expect!

Easy to downgrade to Jovetic if he is in the driving seat.
