Just five days after signing Rio Ferdinand on a free transfer, Harry Redknapp continued to strengthen his back line for the season ahead with the acquisition of Steven Caulker from relegated Cardiff City.

Joining up on a four-year contract, the 22-year-old admitted that the presence of his former Spurs boss and the arrival of the veteran centre-half were both key to his decision:

“I am very excited to be here. It was important for me to be back playing in the Premier League, and Harry Redknapp has given me the opportunity to be at this fantastic club. Harry was a big factor for me, having worked with him at Tottenham. He was very keen for me to join and that was a big plus, knowing the manager wants you. Being able to play with Rio was also a big draw. He has been a role model of mine for many years, along with Ledley King. To have the opportunity to play alongside him was something I felt I couldn’t miss out on. Our first aim this season has to be to get to 40 points, to make sure we stay up. That’s our first goal.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Caulker’s career got underway in 2009/10, when he played 44 times on loan at Yeovil Town. The centre-half was again farmed out to a lower league club the following season, scoring twice in 29 matches for Bristol City, before making his way to Swansea in a year-long loan deal in 2011/12.

Under the guidance of then-manager Brendan Rodgers, Caulker featured on 26 occasions for the Premier League outfit, with only a knee injury curtailing his game time. Retained by his parent club for the following season, he failed to nail down a regular role and, after making just 18 appearances under Andre Villas-Boas, was sold to Cardiff City last summer.

Nailed-on for The Bluebirds, Caulker was the only defender to play all 38 league matches in last term’s top-flight and his aerial threat in the opposition box saw him score on five occasions; only Martin Skrtel and Seamus Coleman, with seven and six respectively, registered more.

On the international stage, Caulker has turned out 21 times for England youth teams and found the net twice. Despite scoring on his debut for the senior side back in 2012, he has yet to feature for the Three Lions since.

The Prospects

Having watched his side muster a mere nine clean sheets at home in 23 Championship matches last season, it’s no surprise to see Redknapp strengthen at the back as he attempts to keep the R’s afloat. Ferdinand’s experience and leadership qualities, allied with the agile Caulker’s threat in the opposition box, suggest QPR have every reason to approach the upcoming campaign with increased optimism.

Redknapp – who handed Caulker his Spurs debut – lavished praise upon the new boy after the deal was confirmed by the club’s official website:

“Steven’s a top player, so we’re delighted to have him at QPR. I know the ability he has and I think it’s an important signing for the club – for the here and now, and for the future. I had him at Tottenham and I was very surprised when they decided to let him go last summer, because I thought he had a big future there. He’s young; he’s a good age; he’s already a fine player but he has so much more potential – it’s a really excellent signing for the club. When good players like Steven become available, who can come in and have a real impact, you’ve got to try and get them. I’m sure he will come in and show exactly what he’s capable of – he’s got everything to be a top, top centre-half, so I couldn’t be more pleased to have him.”

Barring injuries, the Caulker-Ferdinand partnership looks set to be rolled out for the entirety of the 2014/15, leaving the likes of Richard Dunne and Clint Hill as no more than bench-warmers. Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, Caulker’s extra goal threat makes him the most expensive option amongst Redknapp’s backline but, as his heroics for Cardiff showed last term, he’s more than capable of justifying the extra outlay. With 19 bonus points accrued, he ended the previous campaign on 122 points – 15th amongst defenders – despite the Bluebirds mustering a mere seven clean sheets and conceding on 74 occasions.

The only real issue is that Caulker’s attacking potential makes him difficult to bench and trickier to play the fixtures – two of those five goals arrived on the road last time around. Bearing in mind that QPR rotate home/away with Palace for 34 of the 38 Gameweeks, some will perhaps turn to the cheaper Ferdinand, at 4.5, as a more budget-friendly option to dovetail with the Eagles. Such a pairing would hand you eight kind home fixtures (HUL, WHM, SUN, BUR, STO, LEI, AVL, SUN) in the first 10 rounds of matches, for example.

Further analysis of last season’s stats, however, underline Caulker’s capabilities and strengthen his case for consideration. He had more touches inside the opposition box (116) than any other defender and, as a result, was also top for attempts in the area (32) amongst backline options. If Ferdinand can help bolster resilience at the back, then, a 5.0 price tag could prove excellent value for his new central defensive partner.

    Formation Rotation

With the wealth of budget and mid priced defenders, midfielders and forwards, is having a rotating formation (3-4-3, 3-5-2, or even 4-5-1) a valid tactic this season?

I have got the players I think will perform well this season! so I am basically playing the easy 11(fixture wise) my current formation in 4-4-2

Without even having made my team yet, Charlie Austin is on my radar as a cheap third striker. I normally chuck all the money up front, but last season showed defensive investment is important too. I can see it working, but difficult to choose the right players all the time - very easy to miss your budget player getting their rare returns.

It's more of being able to play a 4th defender over an attacker.

I dont think 4-5-1 will ever be a valid formation until there are points for things other than G and A

Rotation through mid an forwards is a viable (if not my preferred) option, especially early in the year before our budgets increase

3 4 3 for me. I was so psyched on 3 5 2 when FPL opened, but when I started tinkering with the team, 3 4 3 still looks like the best one.. Some GW's I might play different formation but 3 4 3 still is the primary one IMO.

With many not being able to decide between 343/352, I think it might be the way to go. Came up with a rough 352/343 formation rotating draft. Doesn't look too bad.

      Begovic
      Shaw Terry Chester (Ferdinand Wisdom)
      Valencia Hazard Siggy Sanchez (Snodgrass)
      Rooney Costa Crouch/Austin

      Austin/Snodgrass rotate quite nicely.
You could easily rotate between Tony V/Snoddy and Crouch/Austin

I probably won't have the balls to follow through with this draft though 🙂

Currently looking at 4-4-2 from this latest selection.which is more def/mid

      Krul, Myhill
      Luis, Cresswell, Shaw, Vlar, Chambers
      Hazzard, , Sanchez, Tadic, Bolasie
      Remy, Giroud, Austin

Sanchez killing my forward selection but don't want to miss the boat if he plays forward.
Hoping Cresswell will be the new Coleman.

I've been playing this game for about 8 years, and this year's pricing is just utterly broken.

    Speroni, Green
    Cahill, Shaw, Davies, Colocini, Targett
    Hazard, Ramsey, Erikson, Sigurdsson, JWP
    Rooney, Dzeko, Remy

I know that people will say that a lot of players have moved, but that's not unique to this year. The problem is that those players were generously priced to begin with, so they're even more of a bargain when they move. The top players are also too low, and so you end up being able to get full coverage of all the big teams right from the start, instead of having to wait until perhaps halfway through the season. There's no challenge. The knock-on effect is that punts become pointless and the whole game gets a bit dull. I'd say that about half the players are priced 0.5m too low compared to times of yore.

Anyone else agree t hat there'e been some dumbing down of prices this year/

You may be onto something here. It's also because of last season's best player left the league and many of other big fishes had a bad season. It's hard to point many players who had a great last season AND the season or two before it. That's why it's hard to price them higher.

No, you should be able to afford that team, because it's not good.

If you want to get a lot of points, then you want to get the top scorinh players, which would mean you need to find the cheapies and good punts to accomodate the big hitters.

Only Siggy is obviously underpriced imo.

I agree that pricing appears to be slightly more lenient than in the past... but without knowing exactly how the season will pan out in terms of points scoring, it's impossible to know for sure...

There will still be a challenge in terms of finding the right balance within the squad early doors...

And a potential negative knock-on effect of this so called 'fair pricing' could manifest itself when we start feeling compelled to use up the extra team value it generates just for the sake of it, even though the form players are actually cheaper players...

Just a few scenarios that come to mind...

Everyone is still forced into making tough decisions, Hazard or Fabregas, Sanchez or Ramsey, RvP or Rooney. Owning or not owning the right one could be massive and having 'cover' of all the big teams might not be enough if certain players underperform and others excel.

I kind of agree. All those 9.0m midfielders should be 9.5. Rooney is very cheap as is Hazard. However it's also more difficult as there are so many more options in each positions it's impossible to have all the players you want. Easy to have a strong team, but there will also be lots of variation between teams.

completely agree, 100%. For the first time in yeasr, i found it very easy to draft a team that is strong throughout. i've 9 starters from clubs who will contend CL places, a solid GK pairing, and decnets options on the bench.

i've hardly changed a thing from my first draft a couple of weeks back.

It has been too easy to build a team this year.

I have a suggestion for this tool which you may or may not consider.

I assume the scores are multiplied by some sort of "nailed on ness" % factor.

It would be great if you could see what factor has been applied to each score and have the option for the user to change it. E.g. If you have Mariappa at 75% but I think he is nailed on, I could change him to 90% for my purposes.

Sadly at work all day & wouldn't be able to give an insightful opinion on Burnley's friendly this afternoon, until either late tonight or tomorrow mid-evening...

However, just a brief injury update (on main fpl prospects) that could interest you guys if you own any of these:

Heaton (first choice keeper) has a minor calf complaint & did not feature in our first friendly

Kightly, again, a cheap option (5.0) first teamer, has not featured much in training...

An outside bet is midfielder Dean Marney, been injured a lot for us last season, but if he gets upto match fitness, will dislodge Dave Jones in CMF, so as an extremely cheap midfield (probable starter) he's certainly one to monitor... Certainly chips in with the odd goal & assist, & at 4.5 you can't get much more....

How will Remy fit in at Liverpool?

Remy is nearing completion for his £8.5million (rising to £10.5million) move to Liverpool, with only personal terms to be agreed. It is believed he will be getting a salary of £80,000 per week, which would suggest that he has not been bought to sit on the bench, nor to be an impact sub, like Lambert, who is currently on £40,000 a week.
One factor in Remy’s game time will be of course, other attacking players. I will list them below and how they are a threat to his position:

    • Lallana – Recently picked up an injury, and will most likely miss the first 5-6 GWs of the season. When fit, he will most likely pick up a place on a flank. He may also play a more central role in a 4-4-2 diamond, alongside Henderson, Can or Lucas. The odd game he may play in the #10 role, however this doesn’t look likely with the wealth of players they have in this position.

    • Sterling – Will take the right flank in a 4-3-3 formation or the #10 spot in the 4-4-2 diamond. Contrary to most people’s opinions, Sterling does not really hold a threat to Remy’s starting potential.

    • Sturridge – Is able to play both central and in a wider position. He was more often the man who would play wide with Suarez playing down the middle. Sturridge is expected to be the main man, the spearhead of the attack, in a 4-3-3 formation. In a 4-4-2 diamond, both he and Remy will play up top. There is a large chance that Sturridge will be forced wide some games with Remy in a more central role if this suits the team.

    • Markovic – A young player with no experience in the Premier League. He will be eased in, bench appearances from the start, with the odd appearance in the starting XI. He is a player for the future and I would not be concerned that he will affect Remy’s game time too negatively.

Liverpool will play 2 main formations, 4-4-3 and a 4-4-2 diamond. The expected line ups are below:

4-3-3, played 75% of the time against easier opposition:
    ------------- Gerrard -----------
    ------Lallana -------- Coutinho
    Sterling ------------------Remy
    ------------- Sturridge ------------

There are a number of ways this could be changed, if BR rests players:

    Sterling > Lallana
    Lallana/Coutinho > Lucas/Can/Henderson
    Remy > Markovic

The other formation they will play is a 4-4-2 diamond, like so:

    -------- Gerrard --------
    Lallana --------- Henderson
    --------- Sterling ----------
    Sturridge ------- Remy

There are a number of ways this could be changed, if BR rests players:
    Sterling> Coutinho
    Lallana/Henderson> Coutinho/Can/Lucas

Lambert will not start many games, and will come on for Sturridge in the 4-3-3 games at around 70 minutes and Remy for the games they play the 4-4-2 diamond.

Brendan Rodgers is impressed with Remy's versatility, and so signed him because he believed he could cover a number of positions. He did not sign him as a bench player to boost the squad. That was more what Lambert was signed as.

Here are Remy's stats for the last season:

    Goals - 14
    Assists - 3
    Mins Per Goal - 150.2
    Conversion Rate - 15.6%
    Shots Per Game - 3.5
Key Passes Per Game - 1.2
    Dribbles Per Game - 1.1

His stats work out as about a goal every second game.

Although primarily a striker, he can operate anywhere across the front line.

Remy featured in five different positions for Newcastle last season and that is a clear sign he will fit into a Liverpool attacking system that is likely to have Daniel Sturridge as its beating heart but with a mix-and-match group of players as its lifeblood.

Raheem Sterling assumed a key role during Liverpool’s title challenge last season after learning to be more flexible, while Philippe Coutinho earned rave reviews in the latter half of the season after showing a similar willingness to adapt.

Rarely did they get in each others’ way as Liverpool smashed goals with abandon at the height of their resurgence; Remy will be equally expected to work out his place in this grand scheme.

There will be inevitable moments of confusion when Sturridge and Remy both pull wide and deep, or chase the same balls into the box. But Rodgers will trust them to come good, in time.

The Liverpool manager would not have spent the £8.5m on Remy if he were not confident there will be no long-term clash of styles, no fighting for the same positions.

His game outside of the box in terms of passing, creativity and hold-up play clearly cannot be compared to Suarez, but when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net, while still perhaps a level below Suarez, he is at least 'in the conversation', to quote Brendan Rodgers.

On loan at Newcastle United last season, the Frenchman scored 14 goals in just 26 games in a team that appeared almost disinterested from January onwards, and 6 goals in 13 starts for a struggling QPR side threatened by relegation.

It is a respectable return, and in a team that creates as many chances as Liverpool did last season, that tally and his minutes-per-goal record of 150.21 could well improve, especially when you consider that his shot conversion rate (21.54 per cent) was better than both Suarez (20.39%) and Wayne Rooney (20.99%).

Of course, with Rodgers having switched formation on numerous occasion between and even during games, and with the prospect of challenging on four fronts in 2014-15, the chances are that Remy would get his fair share of opportunities from the start. Given that he failed to register a goal in his four substitute appearances last season, perhaps that is just as well for us. He would be a wasted talent coming off the bench. That is a role more suited to Lambert.

Overall, Remy looks to be a great addition to an ever maturing Liverpool side. He will not replace Suarez but provides cover and support for the void he left in Liverpool's attack. He can play both central and on the wing, which means he will start many more games. In my opinion, I believe he will be a regular starter, given the formations. However, it is vital we observe pre season in order to get a better picture.

There is a growing list of viable options in the 7.5 to 8.5 bracket (Dzeko, Giroud, Bony and now Remy). Makes sense to have one or two of those in your squad.

Remy being 1.0 less is a deal breaker for me. You can have him, with say Dzeko and then Rooney or Costa, and have a premium midfield and defence, with good strikers too.

    ::2014 Expected Value::

I am only bit-part fantasy player and forum watcher due to work and time, but long time member and love pricing up the players from last season pre-season in an attempt to find value!

    Check out past season stats:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oy77nufv3TIN2eqWhsj5JYJsB1wRUyEia4jviEqRmsw/edit?usp=sharing

---Best use of this is to go straight to file, download, save as excel spreadsheet--- this should ensure you have no filter and sorting issues.

You won't find any new players data, and unfortunately I couldn't find my old archives for Cesc and Drogba among others, but nevertheless - take a look at the "Points Per 90" and those who love the actual PPG, but can no longer access that stat with a fat 0 next to all the players... well - you're welcome 🙂

Highlights - Aguero. Wow, his figures are excellent. Surprised he is such a big differential around here.

In terms of Value. Difficult. There are many players representing 0.5mil of value, but only a single player who is rated 1mil or more of value!...

    Stevie Gerrard.

Enjoy (and let me know if any comments or questions)

Silva 5.6 to 5.9pts per 90mins pretty much all of the last 4 seasons (based on actual points against actual mins played... nothing to do with games).

Yaya, has only faired better than him once in the last 4 seasons. But, expect that to be of no surprise to anyone 🙂

My tip from all of this... normality to be restored if Sergio can find fitness. Aguero to be a must have, Silva to be a nice to have, and Yaya to struggle at that price, even though he came in bang on my EV rating of 11.

veryyy nice. i would choose fab-dzeko and de jong if you can manage it. thats what i did 😀
but im also positive on diouf. at the beginning of the season i try to select new transfers because
i think they have a point to prove, thats why i didnt select hazard but fabregas to my team. still, very good choices

De Jong limped off today during the game against Wellington Pheonix. Not sure we know anymore than that. Colo got injured in the same game, but not sure how.

          No idea regarding Coleman.

to much rotation with Santi, Podolski, Snachez, Walcott,

And Ozil, Ramsey can also play wide if needed

For me there's such a big appeal surrounding defenders with a significant goal threat

Finding the perfect rotation with the cheapest defenders may mean you can get 3 x 6 points every so often but one of the most satisfying things in FPL is having a defender scoring, cleanie and max bonus, bang 15 points.
