West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued to restructure his first-team squad for the season ahead with the acquisition of Andre Wisdom on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool:

The 21-year-old is the sixth player to arrive at The Hawthorns since Irvine took the helm earlier this summer and, as the new manager admitted, his adaptability affords the Baggies options at the back:

“I’m delighted to welcome Andre to the club. I’ve spoken to Brendan Rodgers, who I’ve known for a very long time and who I trust implicitly. He said Andre would do a good job for us. That was reassuring. He’s a versatile lad. He’s played as a right-back for Liverpool in the Premier League last season, he also played as a full-back for Derby. He grew up as a centre-back and played on the left side of central defence for Liverpool against Preston on Saturday.”

The History

Yorkshire-born Wisdom started his career with Bradford City’s youth team before being snapped up by Liverpool at the age of 14. After progressing through the Merseysiders’ youth system, he was finally afforded a senior debut by Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13 and, after playing 22 times across all competitions, scoring once and chipping in with a pair of assists, was farmed out on loan to Derby County in October 2013.

Utilised exclusively as a right-back by Steve McLaren, Wisdom was nailed-on for the Championship outfit. Serving up a trio of assists over 37 appearances, he helped The Rams to the Wembley Play-Off Final against QPR back in May, where, despite dominating for much of the match, they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

At international level, Wisdom has represented England at every youth level, from Under-16 to Under-21, on a total of 37 occasions and has found the net three times.

The Prospects

A peripheral figure at Anfield, the move has immediately brought Wisdom onto Fantasy managers’ radars due to his budget price-tag across the Fantasy games. Available for a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.2 in the Sky Sports Fantasy game, there’s a hope that the youngster could cement a starting berth for The Baggies as Irvine looks to improve upon a dire previous season which saw the club finish just three points clear of the drop zone.

Handed a start at right-back on his debut against Sacramento Republic at the weekend, Wisdom played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 win as Irvine’s side triumphed for the fourth successive outing this summer. Whilst Fantasy suitors will be delighted with his start, the imminent arrival of Costa Rican international defender Cristian Gamboa suggests that Wisdom faces a real battle for the right-back berth as Irvine looks to strengthen following the departures of Billy Jones and Steven Reid over the summer.

However, with the 4.0-priced Chris Baird also offering an option in central midfield and right-back, the situation is far from clear right now. Whilst Irvine has cited the youngster’s versatility as key, The Baggies are not short of alternatives in central defence – new boy Joleon Lescott is favourite to get the nod after quitting champions City for the Midlands, whilst Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson and Craig Dawson are also in the mix.

Intriguingly, though, the local press reckon that the incoming Gamboa could be earmarked for an occasional role on the right of midfield. Pacier than Wisdom, he was used as a wing-back during Costa Rica’s recent World Cup campaign and could offer more from an attacking point of view – certainly, if such a scenario transpires, he could well be the best option from Irvine’s defence.

Certainly, five of West Brom’s first six home fixtures (SUN, EVE, BUR, CPL, NEW) suggest defensive returns could be on the cards, thus strengthening their appeal as cheap rotation options. Wisdom, undoubtedly, has the potential to be a very budget-friendly FPL option for the season ahead, though with a number of ifs and buts still surrounding the Baggies’ likely back-four, Fantasy managers may be best keeping a keen eye on Irvine’s intentions before acquiring the youngster with any degree of conviction.

Have gone with as many big-hitter MFs and FWs as I can to start with, at the expense of the DF. Will re-evaluate after GW 5 or 6.

High value of some of these players would make it easy to transfer them out, perhaps holding onto the WC in the process.

Never gone with just two up front though, will see how that one pans out..

    DOUBLING UP DEFENDERS

I'm relatively new to this site, but there appears to be an established line of thought that you don't double up defenders. Can anyone explain why and whether this is based on any actual evidence? I won my main cash league 2 years ago (and came in the top 2000 overall) with a team featuring two swansea defenders and the keeper. Clearly I got lucky with them having a very good first season and being brilliant at home, but they got me 14 clean sheets over the season and were augmented by a utd/city defender a piece that kept things ticking over.

I suppose the dream is getting two rotating home defenders who can get 10 CS at home each but in reality how often does this happen? If I had started with the entire Saints backline last year I'd have done much better than I eventually did.

I don't see anyone doubling up even obvious clean sheet rewards like say Cahil and Luis. Surely Chelsea will keep at least 15/16 CS over the season home and away so this is guaranteed points? (selection dependant granted)

maybe. But the attacking points may well be shared around. A clean sheet is a clean sheet regardless. I love having 2 chelsea defenders.

Nothing wrong with it in principle, just that it makes more sense once we know which defences are keeping clean sheets. Till then, doubling up reduces the diversification and makes it harder to plan ahead for 3/4 defenders to play every gameweek, especially when the double-up have a tough fixture.

I'm currently going with Filipe + Azpilicueta.

So, what formation will everyone be going with at the start? I've always gone 3-4-3 by default but can see a viable team that tweaks it to a 3-5-2. Anyone care to share their formation or any theory on why a particular formation may be better this season (eg. Strikers and the BP system punishing missed shots, etc etc)? Thanks...

3-4-3 just because I think the trio of Roon - Dzeko - Costa are looking very tasty indeed and allow some flexibility to jump onto other strikers like Studge/Giroud/Pelle/Kun etc.....

And lets not forget, strikers usually score the most points compared to other areas of the pitch

i really think if you treat the bonus just like last season then you wont be going far wrong.
not sure on formations. at one point in the season there may be 5 midfielders you are desperate for so 352 is an option, then a few weeks later there are 3 strikers you simply can't do without. always players first formation second for me (or not even second, almost ignore it full stop)

He will be behind Debuchy for RB.

He can play in other positions, but I doubt he'll be a regular starter.

If I did, I certainly wouldn't have Gerrard. They are not getting half as many pens as last year.

No, because the rest of the team would be shit.

And why would you spend 9m on Gerrard?

That's super pricey...am thinking about going Sanchez, Fab, Mata, Siggy and De Jong though.

Ditch Gerrard, it will make sense and you can probably afford it.

    Calum Chambers' fee is £11m initial + £5m add-ons. £16m total.

Our 4th most expensive signing all time behind Ozil , Sanchez and Reyes

    Was all set with this...

    Mannone/Krul
    Debuchy Terry Shaw (4.0 4.0)
    Nasri Eriksen Ramsey Snodgrass (Albrighton)
    RVP Bony Pelle

But tempted with a 'power 5' mid..

    Mannone/Krul
    Debuchy Terry Shaw (4.0 4.0)
    Nasri Eriksen Ramsey Fabregas Mata
    Dzeko Bony (Bobby Z)

      Go with A but change
      RVP >Rooney
      Bony > Giroud
      Pelle >Dzeko
      Nasri > Mata
      Eriksen > Lamela
      4.0 > 4.5

Based on one or the other playing (so good rotation), thoughts on these options. Rest of mid/att plays each week.

    Puncheon + Austin (0.5 leftover)
    De Jong + Fletcher
    Snod + Ings (0.5 leftover)
    Ince + Ings (1 leftover)
    5m Burnley mid? + Long/Jelly (1.5 leftover)
