Having plundered Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana from Southampton earlier this summer, Brendan Rodgers returned to the St Mary’s club for the third time in order to acquire centre-half Dejan Lovren. The 25-year-old arrives at Anfield for a reported £20m and is Rodgers’ fifth signing of the close-season, with Lazar Markovic and Emre Can also making their way to Merseyside:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, the Reds boss admitted the Croatian’s organisational skills will be crucial for the campaign ahead:

“This is a very important signing for us and I’m delighted it’s completed so Dejan can join up with us on our US tour. I think he’s a really commanding centre-half. I’ve said since we lost Jamie Carragher that we needed that leadership. He’s a player that gives us that. He’s very strong, very commanding, but he can play. I’ve been really impressed with him. I watched him at Lyon, he came into the Premier League with Southampton and I know their players thought he was a big driving force for them and kept them defensively solid. I think he’s a player that can still improve, still develop as he’s in his mid-20s. He’s someone I’m really looking forward to working with.”

The History

A product of the NK Karlovac youth system, Lovren was snapped up by Dinamo Zagreb back in 2004. The defender was handed his senior debut as a 16-year-old a couple of years later before being loaned out to Croatian club Inter Zaprešić – over a couple of seasons, he became a first-team regular and scored once in 50 league outings.

After returning to his parent club for the start of the 2008/09 campaign, Lovren racked up 36 appearances over the next season-and-a-half before being acquired by Lyon midway through the 2009-10 season for €8 million. Spending four years with the Ligue 1 outfit, the Croatian gradually established himself as a key figure at the back and registered two goals and a pair of assists over 72 appearances.

Signed by Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino last June, the centre-half turned out 31 times, scoring on a couple of occasions, with his displays proving fundamental to a run of 15 clean sheets over 2013/14.

On the international scene, Lovren has represented his country from Under-17 to Under-21 level on a total of 55 occasions, scoring six times. The centre-half has also notched twice in 21 appearances for the senior side and played all three group games in the recent World Cup.

The Prospects

Liverpool’s free-scoring side may have earned plenty of plaudits and Fantasy investment after racking up 101 goals in the season gone by, but a series of poor defensive displays ultimately proved their undoing. Rodgers’ side came within two points of the title in spite of a backline that conceded 50 times over 2013/14 – only 14 goals fewer than rivals City (37) and Chelsea (27) combined – and mustered a mere 10 clean sheets over the entire campaign.

Clearly, the Merseysiders need improving at the back if they are to maintain their momentum and Lovren’s acquisition certainly looks a step in the right direction. Having splashed the cash and cited the Croatian’s leadership skills, Rodgers sees the new boy as vital to his plans, and with starts looking guaranteed, it leaves Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho vying for the remaining central defensive berth if, as expected, Liverpool operate with a four-man back-line again. Whilst Skrtel’s seven goals last term underline his capabilities in the opponents’ box, there’s every chance that Sakho could be set to partner the new boy, bearing in mind that Rodgers forked out £15m for the Frenchman’s services this time last year.

Priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Lovren is already the seventh most popular defender in the former game, with an ownership of 16% and rising. Granted, full-back pair Jon Flanagan and Jose Enrique are cheaper at 5.0 apiece and, if either can nail down a regular role this term, they could provide better value than the Croatian but for now, with Skrtel and 6.0 and both Agger and Sakho at 5.5, Lovren certainly seems the safest option for those willing to take a punt on Rodgers’ defence.

Having conceded 93 goals in two seasons under Rodgers, though, it’s fair to say Liverpool are hardly deserving of such lofty price-tags at the back. Bearing in mind that the likes of Mathieu Debuchy is similarly priced and offers a route into an Arsenal defence with 17 clean sheets last term, and Tottenham new boy Ben Davies, at 5.0, will be hoping to benefit from Pochettino’s installation at Spurs, there could well be better value found elsewhere.

Whilst there’s hope that Lovren’s arrival may just be the catalyst for a turnaround in defensive fortunes for the Mersysiders, trips to City and Spurs in the first three fixtures may convince many to steer clear initially. One look at the schedule from Gameweek 4, when Liverpool face four kind home matches (AVL, EVE, WBA, HUL) and trips to West Ham and QPR in the subsequent six, suggests that if Lovren’s installation makes the difference, we could start to reconsider Liverpool’s defence once again.

      Caulker too expensive IMO
Jones okay unless LVG signs a CB or plays 442. JEvans a better option IMO based upon reading the quality press.
Snodgrass - bah. Hull have Europe don't forget, he could easily be rotated. Siggy? De Jong?

I agree. Liverpool need to settle into life post Suarez and to accommodate the new signings. He could be good but plump for someone else (nasri, riksen, Lamela, De Jong?) and react if Sterling looks okay

Question is, will he score that much more than Fab for the cost difference when said cost could have upgraded a mid or low-budget player that could potentially have a major points difference, thus giving you a higher combined points total?

        Eg.

Haz + Low Budget vs Fab + Slightly increased budget to mid cost player.

          1)Chelsea will easily get 6+ pens ...
2)Hazard is a flat track bully
          3) Against weaker opposition Fab will play in the pivot.
4)Hazard on the wing with Costa/Drogba waiting to convert the crosses is more dangerous than Fab playing in the pivot.

Hazard will have another good season and will outscore Fab.

I'm not feeling Hazard at all this season.

Think about it; he ended last season poorly (I dot have the stats but this could be because he was being reserved ahead of the World Cup). He then had a poor World Cup but Belgium made it relatively far so he will need rest. There were a lot of rumours about him moving to PSG. And at the end of last season I remember reading in the quality press that Jose was disappointed with his performances in matches and - more worryingly - his inability to follow what Jose wanted in training. I made a mental note at the time to steer clear of him for a bit. And generally is he really worth £10.0 million? IMO no.

William and Oscar from Chelsea do really interest me though. William especially. He wasn't overly involved in the World Cup and I recall - again quality press - that Jose was really impressed by Willian in training and ty the was integral to plans for the season ahead.

I won't be starting with any Chelsea midfielders until Willian/ Oscar prove themselves. I'm going Costa instead.

Mourinho likes Willian as he's got a really high work rate - offensively and defensively. He's a great player for Chelsea and fits into their setup well but he isn't worthy of any fantasy investment IMO. There are doubts around Fabregas' position so Hazard seems like the only nailed on, proven fantasy player in his current team. Costa could turn out to be an inspired choice but many people are holding off at the start of the season. It is a good time to punt on him with those opening 2 fixtures though.

I agree with what you are saying, besides Fabregas position. Why is there a doubt? Surely he will play besides Matic and get a lot of freedom going forward. Just like Yaya and Ramsey last year. Cesc could even play more advanced in a no 10 role (Oscar out). IMHO Cesc is the best value in CHE midfield.

I do t think there will be a CAM role as such. With the new personnel Jose can now switch to his favoured 4-3-3 system which will likely include Matic, Ramires & Fabregas mainly. Out of those 3 then Fabregas would be the one with more licence to get forward.

A start-up team that breaks the template enough?

    Krul | Elliot
    B.Davies | C.Davies | Janmaat | Caulker | Trippier
Sanchez | Sigurdsson | Hazard | Yaya Toure | Eriksen
    Dzeko | Pelle | Naismith

Goalkeepers (£8.5): Any starting goalkeeper will likely earn similar points over the course of a season (+/- 25pts from average last season), so why spend tons on this position, especially to start with. Picking a quality, experienced starter at £4.5, along with either a rotation pairing of similar price or their natural backup is a sound decision.

Defenders (£25): It looks like attacking fullbacks will have the most potential to benefit in terms of bonus points this season, and for obvious reasons it is never a bad idea to pick up players with a reputation for scoring goals and/or racking up assists, crosses, key passes, blocked shots, etc. Here are five nailed-on defenders at £5 each. No scrubs here, as I like to have options at the back. Each of these guys will likely get their chances to score as often as the premium priced variety in either bonus points or outright goals/assists.

Midfielders (£45.5): This is looking like the season of the midfielder. With so many quality choices, it's hard to mess up these picks. Barring injury/suspension or a fluke transfer, each of these five should have excellent seasons. Yes, this midfield might look fairly "template", but I think these picks fall more in the "well, obviously" category. Each are nailed-on, known creators and goal scorers, and I don't foresee having to tinker with these picks for at least the first six weeks, if ever. 'nuff said there.

Forwards (£21): At first glance, you might think this is a weak front line, and probably because the consensus says you have to have at least one or two big names up front or your fingernails will fall out. Obviously I believe the consensus is dead wrong on this point. As I implied before, I feel that the majority of points this season will be coming out of the midfield, and I have invested my initial £100 according to that belief. In addition, I change forwards more often than any other position over the course of a season, so I tend to look at forwards as punts by default unless a must-have player emerges over time. Bottom line, you can tie all your money up in a van Persie, Sturridge and/or Aguero from the onset, but it seems a risky proposition to do so since it surely means crippling your team's overall scoring potential. That said, I've picked Dzeko, Pelle, and Naismith to lead the line. Dzeko because I think Aguero's chance of outscoring him is insignificant, and because Yaya will outscore them both. Pelle because I believe in his reputation, and really for no other quantifiable reason than the FFS projections look good for him. Obviously Naismith will be riding the pine, and the first player I upgrade as funds allow.

    Well, that's it - a (mostly) non-template start-up team for your consideration.

Depends if Bony actually stays at Swansea or not really but not only that don't forget Arsenal's first game is against a Tony Pulis inspired Crystal Palace defence and I'm not convinced picking Giroud with GW1 in mind is a sensible idea if you think he'd struggle after then!

    1. Sanchez, De Jong (New), Fletcher, Debuchy ….(3-5-2 squad formation)
