Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to announce that last season’s winners of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) – Tom Fenley and Alex Bowers (gavigan) – will be joining our ranks of contributors for the 2014/15 campaign.

Tom and Alex will be writing exclusively for Fantasy Football Scout, providing input to a number of articles over the pre-season to help guide your FPL and UFPL strategies. We’ve also got a few new ideas for regulars next season, with the pair hopefully chipping in with their knowledge and experience along the way.

Things are set to kick off this week, with Tom bringing us a two-part guide to using the Members Area, while Alex’s Ultimate Fantasy Premier League strategy guide is also scheduled for an airing.

Welcome to Fantasy Football Scout – Tom and Alex.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I took a few hours off and went to play some FIFA. It helped me establish a few things I think

    a) Cahill is the best Chelsea defender
    b) Neither DDG nor Courtois are worth it over their defenders
    c) The best time to get Debuchy is probably GW8/9 in a swap for a United defender

This has left me looking atm at

    Krul/Foster

    Shaw, Cahill, Davies, Ward, Colo

No I used FIFA as a way of clearing my head

I played only in Spain, so no bearing on FPL

          it's very possible Trigg but

Ivan, Azpi, JT, Luis I think could all be rotated from time to time. Cahill looks the most secure

I'd like Azpi tbh (I think he's a better option than Luis) but I think he could be the biggest risk

Coverage is not a "thing". Do you think Dzeko will score less points if he has Yaya in or if he doesn't? Just pick whoever you think will score the most points; Giroud imo.

I know it isn't a thing. I for one, am against the term, do not know why I said it.

I prefer Dzeko and would chose him regardless, but it gives a wider spread. I would rather have Dzeko if I had no City players, than have Siggy and Bony for example, or Sanchez and Giroud.

I agree, it isn't a thing. But Dzeko is the best value City player and common sense would suggest him over the other 2

Costa and Sanchez could both be great players but hard to guess how quickly they will adapt. Sanchez value will vary as well depending on where Wenger chooses to deploy him. Hazard is the safe option as he is already a proven commodity and has the potential to maintain or improve his value from last year. The other two are interesting prospects though but both come with more of a risk for the amount of money invested.

Yank here who writes for a sport website in the States. I wrote this “beginner’s guide to EPL fandom” that I thought you lot might enjoy simply for how basic it is and how much I have to dumb things down for people stateside! Been getting some top responses on twitter as people have never heard of the likes of Rooney, Sturridge, or Aguero, let alone the names thrown around regularly on here!

I really like that the Americans finally seem to get a handle on football 🙂 The world cup was the first time in ages that I have seen enthusiasm and genuine interest in a so typical non American sport.

And I hugely admire whoever sticks up their arms and champions the sport over there.

Now you need to write a similar guide to American Football for people like me who only watch the SuperBowl 😛

Ha! I'm the rare American who can't stand American football… You're not missing much. Just beefed up lads seeing who can run into each the hardest, without much of the skill of rugby. The quarterbacks and receivers are very talented, as well as some of the running backs and defensive backs, but for the most part they're just unskilled brutes who happen to be bigger than the rest of the population.

Glad I got that off my chest... If I said even half of that in America I'd be ostracized!

Not true at all. Offensive linemen, the biggest of those big brutes, are not only very strong and very quick, but also have excellent footwork and must be intelligent to make the right reads. Any sport is hard to appreciate if you don't watch it a lot, but they all require skill, otherwise some players wouldn't be better than others except by sheer athleticism.

Ha I knew this was coming. Fair point, and don't get me wrong, that was an oversimplified version. I play baseball in college and from that I can respect the difficulties of all sports. But my larger point is not that linemen are unskilled, it's just that if you're not 300+ pounds (and you're not obese or whatever), you have NO CHANCE of making it. What I like about soccer especially is that any average Joe athletically can make it if they're good enough. Even a 270-pound dude with the best linemen footwork in the history of the world has no chance of playing in the NFL

Cheers. And good q. Spot on assessment. Almost everyone plays in "draft" leagues. So no assigned price value for players, just you and your friends take turns picking players until each team is filled. Brilliant for intra-friend competition, but as you're saying, tough when you want to measure yourself against the world. I believe FPL-style leagues exist, but they're not at all popular

Too weak on defence. And I'm generally in favour of a relatively cheap defence.
Also, if you want to go 3-5-2, then make sure the 2 strikers are top-notch. Remy at QPR is questionnable.

At the end of the day its just about maximising points potential. I like the set up though, but sorry to point out its the same as 85% of the others on here, with a change to a couple of the subs. I like the Naylor pick, Jelly should do well too.

I had a look at De Jong and he was in my provisional team couple of weeks ago. Than he's scored a screamer in his debut but was withdrawn early next game as a precaution meaning there may be an injury concern there. Goufran may be a Newcastle option to start with.

I can't see Gouff starting pal, It'll be Moussa, Cabella and De Jong. We look like were signing Grenier too so Gouff will be used from the bench mainly.

Good to know. I wasn't considering him seriously to start with, just to monitor on the radar same as De Jong really.
Who do you think start in defence? Any chance of Steven Taylor? i hear Ryan Taylor also close to full fitness. Any truth in that?

Taylor is still a few month away from even looking at a run in the team. De Jong is gonna be the boy if he stays fit. Pardiola tried 3-5-2 at the weekend with M'biwa Taylor and Collo but it didn't really work so i'd expect it to be Janmaat Willo Collo and Haidara to start the season with. Willo hasn't kicked a ball pre-season as yet so there is a small chance Taylor could start against city, but i seriously doubt he will. If your looking at a toon defender i'd look at Janmaat, loves dribbling and getting forward. 2 goals and 5 assists for Feyenoord last season in 30 games. Albeit it was in the Dutch league..

Check out the spreadsheet in the article, most centrebacks get less while fullbacks get more.
Not a huge difference but enough
For example cahill may get 5 less over the season while a full back equivelent might get 3 more.
Thats a swing of eight points. Dosent sound much but they all add up

Not much has been said about Valencia around here... In the absence of Carroll and at 7m he surely has to be considered?

West Ham are very shot shy. If they sign Valbuena (no idea how credible the rumour is) then maybe. Is Big Sam for the boot? seems the most unwanted manager going at the mo. Will need to wait and see on WHam this season

That's the major thing putting me of Evans. Hugely worried that he will have no attacking returns.

But as soon as people score doesn't that make the occasional couple of points for crosses etc completely meaningless as the ratio's have been maintained?

high scoring games, it shouldn't matter

I'm pretty sure the new BPS only really just levels the playing field though. So fullbacks can do just as well as centerbacks. I think we're taking it out of proportion in choosing just fbs

Some FBs, like Luis, have little attacking threat. A lot of CBs do.

it's probably a decent starter strategy, but it so often leads to having players for the sake of it, or probably missing out on players due to pointless phobias (slow on suarez & sturridge for example). on the flip side of coverage i saw someone show a team with 3 chelsea defenders in it yesterday and it was like he had shown a picture of a dead baby. people acknowledge that chelsea have the best defence so why is having 3 of the best defence so shocking.

It's less about that and more that having 3 means you're cutting yourself off from all of Hazard, Fabregas and Costa

Having 2 could work if you know which 2
