Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson strengthened his attacking options for the season ahead last week by snapping up Argentine forward Leonardo Ulloa for a club record £8 million. The 28-year-old arrives from Brighton and Hove Albion on a four-year deal and is The Foxes fifth signing of the summer, following Marc Albrighton, Jack Barmby, Ben Hamer and Matthew Upson to the King Power stadium.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Pearson revealed the South American was one of the Championship winners’ key targets after a couple of impressive campaigns with The Seagulls:

“We identified Leo as a player that could help us move forward quite some time ago. He complements the forwards we already have very well and his attributes broaden the options available to us, which will be important this season. I’m delighted we’ve been able to add him to the squad. He has adapted extremely well to the English game in a relatively short period of time and I’m sure he will have a great deal to offer us in the Premier League.”

The History

Ulloa’s career kicked off back in 2002 in his native Argentina with second division Comisión de Actividades Infantiles Comodoro Rivadavia. Struggling to earn a regular role, he managed just one goal from seven appearances before making his way to San Lorenzo, where he produced three goals in 32 matches in the Argentine top flight.

The six-foot-three forward had brief spells with Arsenal Sarandi (three goals from 12 appearances) and Olimpo (14 league games produced three strikes and an assist) before he was acquired by Spanish Second Division outfit Castellon in the summer of 2008. Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Ulloa served up 30 goals in 79 appearances for the lower league side and persuaded La Liga club Almeria to shell out for his services.

Despite scoring seven times in his debut season in the Spanish top-flight, Ulloa was unable to prevent his new side from relegation. Over the subsequent season-and-a-half, he delivered 32 goals and a single assist in 56 appearances before Brighton snapped him up in January 2013. The Argentine needed no time to adapt to his new surrounds, though, and proceeded to deliver 26 goals and eight assists in 58 matches across all competitions for the Championship outfit before Pearson came calling.

The Prospects

As our resident Leicester fan, Andy, discussed in an earlier article on Leicester’s prospects, Pearson predominantly rolled out a 4-4-2 formation in last year’s successful promotion push, with a very occasional switch to 3-5-2. A two-man frontline looks on the cards, then, and given the significant outlay, it seems more than likely that Ulloa’s imposing figure will partner David Nugent up top from the off.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Ulloa reckons his physique makes him an ideal asset for the English top-flight:

“It was my father that said he wanted me to play in the Premier League because my body is made for England. I’ve enjoyed my time in England. It’s been a year and a half now. It’s a different kind of football, English football is intense and strong, but it’s good and I feel good when I’m on the pitch. I enjoy it all the time. I’m more excited than I was to be playing in La Liga, because I think the Premier League is number one. I want to play for Leicester and I know they are a really good team. Last season they played really well and I think it’s a really good club. They have a good team and it’s great for them to be in the Premier League after a long time out.”

While a price of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is budget-friendly, Ulloa may well be overlooked by Fantasy managers, given that Nugent is available for an identical price and also boasts spot-kick duties for Pearson’s side. Nugent amassed 20 goals and 12 assists in the promotion campaign, compared to the new boy’s 14 goals and four assists for Brighton, suggesting that he could provide better value.

Even so, Pearson’s acquisition of winger Marc Albrighton may prove beneficial to the Argentine. The former Villa man will be tasked with delivering plenty of crosses from the flank, with Ulloa’s aerial ability potentially playing a prominent role in Leicester’s attacking forays.

Looking at the season ticker, though, it’s fair to say that few will be willing to splash out on Pearson’s weapons from the offset. With showdowns against Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United supplemented by trips to Stoke and Palace in the first six Gameweeks, the Championship winners have one of the toughest opening schedules around. Steering clear looks the safest option to begin with, then, affording us time to assess whether Ulloa is capable of usurping Nugent as a Fantasy option when the fixtures take a turn for the better around Gameweek 7.

I kind of like the idea of JWP as my 5th mid, so maybe him and Austin.

Or if you want a cheap midfield rotation (something I have tried and never works, mind) maybe Hoilett.

Cameron not nailed on, Terry not nailed on.

I see puncheon as too expensive to be an option this year, I also think a midfield needs atleast 2 over 9m players to be even considered in a 4-3-3.

Forwards look good but Aguero may not be for at the start.

Isn't this better than a normal RMT!
Most of these players are nailed on, the only ones I'm not sure about are Cameron, Taylor and Albrighton.
You have really good captaincy option from 4 of the 5 top teams.
The player not already proven in the PL is Sanchez.

I never claimed that this was my team, I suggested that it would good for captaincy options.
I do think it would score reasonably well though!
Some people seem very upset to see a top heavy team, if these three strikers start scoring early on in the season then this is what most teams will look like.

I quite like it. Not a fan of the jagielka pick; with his fixtures there are better options at that price. If you were willing to just play Krul, you could even upgrade jags -> Luis, and thereby cover a stronger defence in Chelsea.

I wouldn't be too quick to make the switch you just mentioned, I'd wait to see if Cameron looks like starting first, as well as where remy ends up.

Posted earlier today without much response. Tinkering with Studge and stumbled upon this - not half bad.

    Krul
    Luis Jones Davies (Tot)
    Ramsey, Fabregas, Eriksen, Siggy
    Rooney, Sturridge, Dzeko

While I don't buy into the notion of "cover" in terms of offensive assets, it's worth noting that Utd, City, Pool, Chelsea, Tot and arsenal are all represented up front here.

Add to that Utd, chelsea and Tottenham cover at the back, and that's not a bad team. I'd be lamenting the choice to forego haz/Sanchez I'm sure though.

Is Sturridge worth it up front? Can easily be downgraded and used to fund a high performing Sanchez or haz for example, but hard to get in if he fires from the off.

I like eriksen as a pick b/c I feel as tho he will be key to spurs going forward, compared to some of the 9m players who are competing against stronger and more numerous midfield/striking assets for the same points.

Yeah man think the front three is beasty, nice to see studge in there instead of Giroud (not sold on giroud myself). Have the same 3 man defence myself haha so I'm biased but I like it, and the hit you seem to have taken in midfield has still left you with fab and ramsey which are still great players! The only thing that niggles me is there is a mata-shaped hole but not sure how you would bring him in really!

Really appreciate our feedback. Yea, I've been trying to fit mata in there but it is difficult, since I'd be hesitant to swap him out for either of Ramsey or Fabregas. The only real option would be to downgrade Stur -> Costa and then bring in Mata in place of fab + 1m (or eriksen).

But tbh, I'm liking the look of Sturridge up top a bit too much for that.

As for Ramsey and fab over Sanchez and hazard, it's a really hard call to make. As you say, both replacements are fine picks in their own right, but I can't help but feel that I'm going to suffer. Any suggestions?

Hey so I currently need to shave 1m from somewhere to afford Pelle > Costa. Any ideas about where from? Thanks in advance.

    Krul / Speroni

    Cameron / Chester / B.Davies / Targett / Wisdom

    Fabregas / Mata / Sanchez / Siggy / Sidwell

    Rooney / Dzeko / Pelle

I would like to keep Mata, Sanchez and Fabregas.

Pretty much the same as my team. I got Costa in by going for a one team Goalie ie Foster/Myhill. Albrighton as 5th mid and Man U defender plus cannon rotation fodder for last 2 defenders.

Agger + Lovren could be an excellent pairing, better than Sakho + Lovren or Skrtle + Lovren.

This strategy will come back to bite you. The wrong players will be on the bench at the wrong time.

After years at this 2-3 sure scoring defenders is the way to go. Maybe 2, with one or two 4.5 and one 4 and you rotate the 4.5.

If you need to free up cash, there are plenty of 5-5.5 strong contenders to start. Then you pick a 4.5 and two 4's.

Four cheap defenders is fine, don't worry about it, especially at the start of the season.

I agree. need an balanced all round team. pointless having mega points up front if your defenders are not scoring any points. I go for 3 decent defenders and then 2 cheap one's who I rarely have to play.

Opinions on Harry Kane as a cheap third forward? (Got a total of 6 mil to spend there).
Will be playing 352 most of the season but need a sub 6 mil forward to rotate one of the midfielders with if one of them have a tought fixture (mailny De jong and SIggy). The saved 1 mil would be great for my defense, but I am unsure if Kane is going to get any game time at all and if a 5.5 or 6 mil striker would be a better option.

midfield is fine, but 14m for two everton defenders who have that start is a lot of your budget which could easily be used to upgrade Bojan. You have one player from city, united, chelsea and liverpool. That's insane. So many goals in those four teams that other teams will just kill you for.
