Sunderland boss Gus Poyet finally ended the search for a new left-back last week by snapping up Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea. The 23-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ fourth signing of the summer, following Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon to the club:

After completing his move to Wearside, the Dutchman revealed he rejected other suitors in order to stay in the English top-flight and was quick to talk up his attacking intentions for the season ahead:

“I had a couple of offers from different countries but the Barclays Premier League is where I want to be, I want to show everybody what kind of player I am and what I am capable of doing. I am a left-back who likes to go forward and I like to take people on. I will also try to get some assists but I will do my defending first because that is where my role starts, it is all about helping the team and I think I will do a good job.”

The History

After progressing through the Den Bosch and PSV Eindhoven youth systems over a period of four years, Van Aanholt was snapped up by Chelsea as a 17-year-old back in 2007. Despite a seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman played just eight times for the Chelsea first-team (delivering a goal and assist) and was mainly farmed out on loan by the London club after failing to displace Ashley Cole in the starting XI.

Spells at Coventry (20 appearances, one assist), Newcastle (seven league outings), Leicester (12 games, one goal and one assist) and Wigan (four appearances) between 2009 and 2012 afforded Van Aanholt little opportunity to establish himself as a regular, though.

A temporary move to Vitesse Arnhem in January 2012 finally helped him settle down and, over the course of two-and-a-half seasons on loan at the Dutch club, he finally found his form. After serving up two goals and five assists in 46 appearances in his first 18 months, Van Aanholt’s attacking forays came to fruition last season, where he produced five goals and five assists in 38 matches over all competitions.

At international level, the raiding left-back has represented Holland at youth level on 26 occasions, scoring once, whilst he’s also turned out a couple of times for the senior side.

The Prospects

With the versatile Phil Bardsley and on-loan Marcos Alonso both departing the club over the summer, Van Aanholt looks set to be handed a regular role at left-back for the Black Cats in the season ahead.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, a price of 4.5 seems likely, whilst a cost of just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game makes Van Aanholt one of the cheapest first-choice defenders around.

Analysing his stats from last term, the Dutchman’s attacking displays bode well – a total of 52 shots over 29 appearances equates to 1.8 attempts per game, whilst in terms of creativity, he averaged one key pass per league match. Bearing in mind that Alonso registered 1.6 shots and created 1.1 chances per match during his loan stint, the Dutchman looks a like-for-like replacement for the Fiorentina man.

In terms of defensive prospects, Poyet’s arrival clearly made a significant difference to Sunderland’s resilience. After conceding in every match under Paolo di Canio, the Wearsiders managed 11 shut-outs in the remaining 31 league fixtures (six at home and five on their travels) and, with their backline options so kindly priced, many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Black Cats ahead of a schedule which pits them against West Brom, QPR, Burnley, Swansea and Stoke in the opening seven Gameweeks.

With an average of 4.9 points per game under Poyet, though, it’s difficult to look beyond Vito Mannone as the best value route amongst Sunderland’s defensive options. The Italian’s heroics between the posts have already earned him over 13% ownership in FPL – the sixth most popular keeper – though if Poyet decides to alternate Mannone with Pantilimon as his number one as the season unfolds, Fantasy faith in Van Aanholt may take a turn for the better.

Posted this yesterday, but thought id post again for those that missed it and to hear some different opinions:

Is having an Arsenal defender in your backline really essential for the start of the season?

After looking long and hard at fixtures in the opening 8 GWKs, I thought I had found the 5 teams whom I believed to have the best fixtures in the opening 8 GWKs, based on whether the fixture is Home/Away and their defensive strength vs attacking potential of opponent*.

These were: Chelsea, Arsenal, Stoke, Hull, Crystal Palace.

*I also believe Manchester UTD's fixtures are great, however with the uncertainty of who will start/who they might buy/Shaw's fitness I based this on the premise of using De Gea in goal which imo is the wiser option anyway.

However when looking at which 3 out of the 5 defenders I would start each week up to GW8 (based on the popular 3 at the back formation), I found that, based on the fixtures that all of my defenders have each week, I would only start an ARS defender in 4 out of 8 of those first GWKs and only 2 out of 4 of these are at Home. Compared to a CHE defender who I would start in at least 6 out of 8 GWKs.

These are the games I would start an ARS defender:
GW1 vs CPA, GW3 vs lei, GW5 vs avl, GW8 vs HUL

These are the remaining 4 fixtures I would not use them:
GW2 vs eve, GW4 vs MCI, GW6 vs TOT, GW7 vs che

This begs the question whether it is worth having a mid-high priced defender from ARS if they will only be used in half of the initial GWKs? Or would the points gained from the 4 GWKs they would be used make it worthwhile? Are we better off going for defenders from a team such as Newcastle who on paper have promising fixtures after GWK 1? Or should we double up on GK/DEF from UTD/CHE?

If you have got this far thank you for reading. Please tell me what you guys think as I realise a lot of this is based on personal opinion/preference.

I must add that this does not consider goal or assists by defenders as these are so few and far between that at the start of the season they are not even worth considering. Does not include BPS for similar reasons. And that I understand injuries and form may play a part in decisions after the first few GWKs but this is just based on what information we have now.

I agree, and I think you can build a very good cheap defence without Arsenal.

I looked long and hard at the fixtures and also found great games for Stoke; I think that a defence of chelsea, stoke, palace, newcastle and QPR looks a lot better. Check it out!

I, like you have DDG. I did have Debuchy to begin with but have since dropped him.

      Currently looking like
      Cahill or Luis - Bavies - 4.5 or Ward - Collocini - 4.0

I keep subbing debuchy on and off my squad. I want United and Chelsea as premium defense and then mid to low priced deenders to rotate for the third position.

If I stick with Shaw, I would get Bego in goal and if I get rid of Shaw for Debuchy, I would take DDG and a 4.0 GK. All in all, I think you are right about the 5-6 teams with good defensive fixtures. I'm planning to decide on which players to populate the six positions (7 if I go for rotatking GKs) closer to deadline.

I don't fancy arsenal defence to start either. Chelsea are they only team I'd double up on. I don't understand the Utd love at all. I don't care how good the fixtures are, their defence is still poor.

That's what I like - he can come on in the last 15-20 mins and is a huge threat from set pieces, plus he will ideally get great service with the addition of Fabregas. Not sure whether I would pay even 6.5 though, quite a few options at that price

        imo the followjng 3 things:
        ball doesnt stick to him,
doesn't seem good at one touch lay offs to teammates,
and seems to run out of ideas against deep defences.

I have come to the conclusion that Rooney is the easy pick and I will therefore be getting RVP instead to avoid the inevitable template trauma 😉

The fear of not having RVP is also greater than not having Rooney.

Baines whipped in 229 crosses last season. Lukaku scored (I think) 2 of them. Only 4 in total were converted into goals.

Not saying Lukaku won't score, but I don't think it will be Baines feeding him.

I really want Rooney/Sturridge/Aguero, but it certainly wrecks your team. You have to decide if you're happy with a budget defense and/or 1-2 of the 9.0+ options in midfield to get the 3 heavy hitters up front.

Kone is dead in the water if the Lukaku deal is true. Also I'd love Mariappa if I thought he was going to start regularly, but his no-shows in 3 out of 4 pre-season games scares me somewhat.

I also think Studge is over-priced and has poor fixtures, but can understand why you'd pick him. Matter of preference that one

Thoughts on going with both Hazard and Cesc? Good shout or overkill? Currently have:

    Krul (Elliot)
Ben Davies - Debuchy - Filipe Luis (Ward) (Targett)
Fabregas - Hazard - Mata - Sigurdsson (Albrighton)
    Dzeko - Giroud - Rooney

    What changes would you make?
