After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

There are rumours that say Falcao might join City, while Jovetic might go to Juventus. How do you think this will affect Dzeko in FPL? I don't think Pellegrini will play 2 target men at the same time

Anyone fancy helping out by inserting a formula into an Excel Spreadsheet I've got which will change the colour of a name in a sheet to red if found in a different sheet?

Easy for some, impossible for others :).

This is fantasy football related, fear not.

Looks like excel doesn't allow conditional formatting across workspaces.

I'd add a column with an If(vlookup) to the sheet you have the selected players in and then conditional format on whether the output is true or false.

Yes..Now tell me if I am correct:

You want to colour the player Red from sheet "Compiled Bids" if they are present anywhere in sheet "Player List" ???

For example: in the cell B6, you have Moore and Moore is also present in the sheet "Player List", hence the "Moore" in "COmpiled Bids" should be coloured red?

So entirely the other way round. I.e. ALL players appear in "Player list" but I only want the ones who appear in "Compiled bids" to be coloured red in "Player list" (and there will be duplicates in case that complicates things at all).

Are the chosen players in a single list?

If so then go to the first cell under the whole player list and make it = the first player in the selected players list and hit enter. Then drag the bottom right corner of that cell you just put the formula in and drag it down until there are as many with the formula as total players. Then select that whole list (all the players and all the cells with the formula) then click conditional formatting –> duplicate values.

Then every time you add a player to the list of those selected, they'll automatically appear at the bottom of the whole player list and be highlighted in red.

I also wonder if part of the reason Jose parked the bus in big games was the fact that he didn't have much faith in his strikers to go and win him the game if they were conceding

I'd like to know how many players you have who are new to their team this season (and of those, how many are new to the league altogether)

    Mine is: 6 (4)

Siggy, Van Aanholt, (Tadic, Costa, Luis, Sanchez)

Mine seems a little high, though on paper they look like they are born for FPL 🙂

Not really. I think LVG can get the system working and the players he has are not as bad as people make out.

Football is fickle- one bad season (under a terrible coach) and you are a nobody in the eyes of the general public.

There will be teething issues for sure, but I'd be surprised if we werent in the top 4 (both in the defensive stats and the league as a whole)

    Which do you prefer:-
    A) Fabregas and Ferdinand/Simpson
    B) Sterling and Caulker

Thinking (A) is better for the first few weeks, but (B) is better long term. Just don't like having transfers planned as something always comes up.

Going for a cheap backline with the max price at 5 million, any improvements i can make?
So far it is Ward, Clyne, Cameron, Rosenoir and Bruce
I will only be playing 3 defenders so i can rotate

FFScout Striker/Midfielder Community Ranking Results (First 10 Gameweeks)

From the percentages of people who ranked each player, an 'Average Importance Rating' was calculated based on the average position that the player was ranked in, with 10 being the highest possible score and 0 being the worst. The percentages next to the players below indicate what % of people ranked them in that final average position (of course the lower the % the greater the fluctuation in rank). From the 100+ people that answered the survey, the results were as follows:

    STRIKERS

    1. Rooney - 9.73 | 92%
    2. Costa - 7.77 | 54%
    3. Sturridge - 6.55 | 23%
    4. Dzeko - 6.03 | 19.19%
    5. Lukaku - 5.63 | 18.7%
    6. Giroud - 5.15 | 16.1%
    7. Aguero - 4.68 | 21.2%
    8. Bony - 4.41 | 22.2%
    9. Pelle - 2.79 | 35.3%
    10. Adebayor - 2.22 | 54%

    MIDFIELDERS

    1. Mata - 8.69 | 40.4%
    2. Hazard - 7.85 | 23.2%
    3. Sanchez - 6.70 | 14.1%
    4. Ramsey - 6.48 | 21.2%
    5. Yaya - 5.67 | 11.1%
    6. Fabregas - 5.56 | 21.2%
    7. Sterling - 4.44 | 12.1%
    8. Eriksen - 4.15 | 23.2%
    9. Silva – 3.26 | 28.2%
    10. Lamela - 2.20 | 53.4%

These ranks provide a good gauge for the general desirability of big-hitting midfielders and strikers on this site at the moment. I will personally be using this combined with the RMT predictions and my own analysis to determine the best players worth having, so hopefully these stats are of some use.

For me, Hazard has pens is a poor excuse when deciding between him or Cesc. Presumably, it looks like Cesc will be on free kicks and some corners, how many goals do Chelsea score from set pieces? More than enough to cancel out Hazard being on penalties, imo.

Only to some extent. Having Hazard 'cause he has Penalties is NOT a poor excuse. It's certainly a greater advantage than free kicks/corners. With Chelsea expected to attack more this time around there will be plenty of Pens IMO.

a hyptotehtical estimate of terry, cahill and ivanovic all scoring 3 each direct from set-pieces (plenty of their goals come from flick ons too). that could be 9 assists, 27 points. assists aren't doing much bonus wise. so maybe sneaking into the 30s. think that's a top end estimate for fabregas, 9 assists just from set-pieces is maybe even a record (i'm not sure). with 4 penalties hazard can get into the 30s.

Even without bonuses, 9 assists from set pieces is truly exceptional, whereas 6 penalties is completely normal number for top table clubs. Chelsea has got more than that in 4 of the last 6 seasons.

      And for pretty good reason.

Look at the other choices you have at £6 mil.

Now look at similar attack minded defender's like Debuchy & Johnson prices...
