The Dane was amongst a number of big-money signings made by Andre Villas-Boas last summer as Tottenham looked to recover from the loss of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. Eriksen had sparkled in the Eredivisie for Dutch outfit Ajax, racking up 19 goals and 39 assists in his final 70 league appearances, and his arrival on these shores persuaded many Fantasy managers to draft him into our five-man midfields.

Under Villas-Boas, Eriksen struggled to adapt to his new surrounds. A lack of form, blighted by both injury and an inconsistency of starts, saw the midfielder muster just a single assist in the first 15 Gameweeks before the Portuguese boss was sent packing after a 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool. With Tim Sherwood at the helm, Eriksen flourished as the north London outfit went on the attack and ultimately ended the season on 132 points – just outside the top 10 midfielders in his first year in the Premier League.

Key Factors

    • Further analysis of Eriksen’s FPL stats underline the impact of Sherwood’s tactics. With dead-ball duties helping his Fantasy potential, the Dane delivered seven goals, eight assists and 20 bonus points in his final 18 appearances of the 2013/14 campaign – an average of 6.4 points per game (ppg) over that period dismissed notions that he was too lightweight for the English top flight and underlined Eriksen’s appeal as a Fantasy contender.

    • The first few months of the previous campaign have worked to Eriksen’s advantage in terms of pricing. Available for 8.0 – the same as team-mate Erik Lamela, who managed a mere 14 points in 2013/14 – the Dane has remained outside of the premium bracket, despite that convincing end to the campaign. Coming in at the same cost as the likes of Willian and Philippe Coutinho, and just 0.5 pricier than rotation-threatened options such as Andre Schurrle, Jesus Navas and Lazar Markovic, there’s a feeling than Eriksen has been underpriced by FPL. Put the above stats into perspective, the 10.0-priced Eden Hazard averaged 5.8 ppg last season – if Eriksen can replicate those displays over an entire year, then, he could provide us with excellent value.

    • As mentioned in our piece on Erik Lamela, the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino is also key here. In his only full season at Southampton, the Argentine transformed the Fantasy fortunes of players such as Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez – Lallana’s turnaround, from 93 points in 2012/13 to 179 points last year, was inspired by Pochettino’s high pressing game as the Saints’ main attackers harried and harassed their opponents in the final third. Eriksen should be given license to attack in Spurs’ new 4-2-3-1 formation and seems to have retained corners and set-pieces under the Argentine – cementing his appeal as the man most likely to deliver in many managers’ eyes.

    • Delving deeper into last season’s data also bodes well for Eriksen. From Gameweek 17 onwards (ie, the first game under Sherwood), the Spurs playmaker produced 50 key passes – only four midfielders managed more, with Chelsea’s Willian top with 56, whilst Hazard was just two ahead of the Dane on 52. Eriksen was joint-fourth for goals (seven) in midfield over those final 22 Gameweeks – only Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Hazard managed more, though the trio had spot-kick duties to fall back upon. Eriksen averaged 41.5 minutes per attempt under Sherwood – only slightly slower than Hazard’s 39, for example – and with a 17.9% conversion rate in his final 18 appearances, the Dane’s eye for goal is more than apparent.

    Tadic vs Lamela?

I find it weird that people are avoiding Tadic due to him not being tested in PL, but think Lamela is a great prospect for warming Spurs' bench a lot last season. I think both are great prospects, but I actually think Tadic has the brighter potential.

    Anyway, please slate my team!

    Foster, (Krul)

Shaw, B. Davies, Chester, (V Aanholt, Clyne)

    Fabregas, Mata, Eriksen, Tadic, (Siggy)

    Costa (C), Rooney (VC), Bojan

    Note:

I have a nice 4 way rotation even if Shaw or Davies miss a game or two due to not being "nailed on". I think Shaw will defo assist once or twice within the first 10 GWs. His pull back for Mata vs Liverpool was great & he delivered deadly balls into the box last season!

Siggy & Bojan rotate really well which is why I haven't gone for Albrighton as a bench player.

I don't believe in coverage for coverage sake, I believe Mata & Fabregas have a brighter potential over the likes of Ramsey, Silva & Sterling for the first few weeks (mostly due to fixtures). I will buy Ramsey etc. depending on form & fixtures when the time is right.

                I'm not arguing mate 🙂

Just having a discussion as I was wondering why Lamela was getting all the positive attention.

What do you think about Newcastle? They've had a great transfer window overall imo, I think De Jong and Cabella may score 20 goals between them this season.

Yeah, I think De Jong will be ready by GW 2.

Who should I downgrade to Arnautovic? Truth be told, I just don't think he's worth it at £6.5m, I think even Shelvey might outscore him this season.

Fabregas to Hazard would be nice, but I think Fab will provide just as strong value for money as Hazard.

Why do you think that? Have you seen either play properly? I haven't. I'm just using stats and speculation for my judgements & unless you're doing something wildly different, I don't see how you can just state Lamela is a lot better. Do you think Lamela is a lot better than Remy Cabella too?

I think Lamela will do pretty well this season, but I also think Tadic, Cabella & De Jong could perform just as well or at least provide the same level of value for money as him.

i was put off tadic when i realised he plays on the left. He'll whip in a lot of balls for Pelle who i think will mostly miss them. Eriksen on the other hand will be delivering to adebayor.

I think your team is really good though. Agree on Shaw, though i think chelsea defence is essential. And i'd pick ramsey over fabgreas easily. Easier fixtures and a place over oscar in favour for fabregas, but chelsea are not a goal scoring team really, and Fabregas is bit of an unknown in this side. I think Ramsey is crucial to arsenal's attack. Will see more in charity shield.

Interesting argument against Tadic, one that I hadn't thought of and it certainly makes sense. Although I went with Bojan over Pelle, I really hope he does well this season and proves us all wrong - I have no idea why Southampton didn't chase Remy (£10m-ish is a bargain to have him, considering they sold Lambert for £4m).

If it weren't for Chelsea's first 2 brilliant fixtures & Arsenal's bad opening run + the fact they're missing Ozil, I would have chosen Ramsey.

I'll also go for Azpilicueta when Chelsea have a longer run of strong fixtures. After the first 2 GWs I can easily swap Fab for Ramsey/Ozil or even go for Cabella/De Jong & upgrade Bojan to Pelle etc. if a mid price striker is doing well.

        Thanks for the feedback!

Kolarov could be a good pick

City also have a reduced CL squad and i think they need to pick 5 home grown players (instead of 8)

                  Hart*, Willy,Wright*

Sagna, Zaba, Komps, Managala, Demichelis Boyata* Clichy*

Silva, Yaya, Nasri, Navas, Fernadinho, Fernando, Javi Garcia

                  Aguero, Dzeko, Jovetic, Negredo

That's 21 and they still need 1 more home grown player, Kolarov could miss out

Not sure. I think Bacuna will play further up. Hutton is a good player. Villa just couldn't afford his wages before so they loaned him. Now the club's being sold they can now.

Posted it a bit earlier 😉

        DDG and Gilks (understandably why)

Huth Mariappa Colo Vlaar PVA (room for a QPR defender over someone like Colo if I want)

Mata Tadic Hazard Rambo Albrighton (once again, any 4.5 will do)

        Bony Rooney Dzeko.

Offers plenty of decent fixtures from a defensive point of view and I'm happy to take a punt on Tadic now that Siggy is pushed wide for now. Be kind 😉

Colo and PVA rotate perfectly, as do Mariappa and a QPR.

I'm guessing you're taking a punt on Vlaar moving or are you hoping Villa improve on last year?

Villa actually do pretty decent defensively against okayish sides when Vlaar is present. It was when he was out they crumbled. With that said, a QPR defender could certainly happen.

I play fixtures over Home vs Away so every week at least 3 of them have nice games at the start.

Below are just the players with favourable fixtures (not focusing on home or away)

            GW1

Huth (Villa) Vlaar (Stoke) PVA (WBA)

            GW2

Huth (Hull) Colo (Villa) Mariappa (West Ham) Vlaar (Newcastle)

            GW3

Colo (CPL) Mariappa (Newc) Vlaar (Hull) PVA (QPR)

Vlaar hits tough games around GW 5 but the rest are pretty okay matches barring the odd tough one around GWs 8-11 or so.

I've just jumped on the Bojan bandwagon,

I reckon Hendo + Bojan beats Pelle + Albrighton (or any other 4.5 mid)

I wanted to avoid Bojan, and avoid a 3-5-2 even more, but I just don't think it makes sense.

The 'problem' is that there aren't any stand-out strikers in the 6.5 to 8 mill range. Or are there?

Does Pellè provide good value for £7.5? Good fixtures, probably at the peak of his career and will be the Saints' sole front-man. Major negatives attached though, most obviously the giant transition into the BPL that many fail to make.

Ha, in a way yes. But, if he can make that transition then he'll be FPL gold. Think I'm going to monitor him closely the first two or so gameweeks.

Good positioning, aerial ability and awareness, but are his attributes strong enough to shine in the BPL? That's the question, and it's so unpredictable IMO.

I've just jumped out of the Pelle boat, but might well jump in again after a couple of games if he does ok - not even 'well' just 'ok' will do.

Think I'm in the same 'closely-monitor for the first few' boat. Too much of a risk going in with him, but then again, that's what makes getting him so potentially rewarding - the risk factor.

        :/
