It’s time for the third instalment in our Burning Questions series, focussing on some of the main dilemmas facing Fantasy managers for the season ahead. Having quizzed our contributors on Alexis Sanchez’ prospects and Defensive Heavy Hitters, we now turn our attentions on a certain Dutch forward, as United prepare for their first season under new boss Louis van Gaal.

When Van Gaal’s appointment was first announced, our expectations for Robin van Persie soared. The veteran manager’s preferred 4-3-3 formation looked set to force Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata onto the flanks and hand his compatriot the lone forward role but, since taking the helm, Van Gaal has continued with the 3-4-1-2 formation that earned Holland third place at the recent World Cup.

Rooney and Mata have resultantly flourished in central roles for the Red Devils over the summer friendlies so far and, whilst Van Persie has yet to return to action after his summer exploits in Brazil 2014, the former pair approach the upcoming campaign in excellent form.

At 12.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Van Persie is the priciest option available to Fantasy managers despite scoring just 12 times in an injury-hit campaign under David Moyes last time around. Granted, with Van Gaal at the helm, we can surely expect an improvement but can he rediscover the form that served up 56 goals, 28 assists and 94 bonus points over 2011/12 and 2012/13?

With just a week to go until their season opener at home to Swansea, we ask the question – Can Robin Van Persie emerge as “essential” once again?

Evs says…
This may shock you all (being the proud owner of an RVP duvet) but I am going to say NO. He just doesn’t look as sharp as in previous seasons. Even in the World Cup, with the exception of the Spain game, he looked ordinary at best. Whereas beforehand he was in your team and there to stay, I think he will be better bought and sold as fixtures dictate. So bearing in mind he is unlikely to start the few first games of the season, then, he’s not essential for now. The only thing that may help swing it in Van Persie’s favour is a lack of European duties for United this season – while many rival strikers have busier schedules, he only has Premier League games to contend with. The duvet is in storage for now… But it may used again!

Applebonkers says…
Back in May 2010 a man called Darren in a Sunderland shirt took me to one side and said, “Son, look at me, I’ve scored 24 goals this season and played in all 38 matches. Yet I still haven’t reached the 200 point mark.” It was at this point that I learnt that it is not actually the more alluring goal which makes the true heavyweight striker, but the assist.

So I think this question could be as simple as will Van Persie start to pump out the assists again? We know he’ll score goals as not even David Moyes could unpolish that diamond, it’s all about the three point cousin. Fellow left-footer Juan Mata is a serious contender for right-sided set-pieces and that could dent van Persie’s potential to earn assists from the deadball.

The Dutchman’s number of passes and all-round involvement plummeted last season, this not only hurts his assist threat but hit him hard on bonus too. Rooney’s 46 passes per game compared to van Persie’s 18 (30 being the magic mark) meant the Dutchman struggled to compete with Rooney’s goals. Overall I’m sceptical whether van Gaal will help inject enough mojo back in to replicate the essential version of 2011 and 2012.

Tom Fenley says…
This is really down to Louis van Gaal, and unless we find out exactly how he’s going to set up the team it’s difficult to know. If it’s two up front then he’s likely to score about the same, or perhaps a little more than Rooney but not enough to warrant spending that extra two million. It’s always possible that van Persie will become essential, particularly if he starts playing up front on his own. It’s sensible to keep a way open of fitting him in with two transfers. However, overall, for that price and the money you save, unless Rooney really isn’t performing (and he does tend to have either very good or bad runs) it makes no sense to have van Persie, right now. Two million elsewhere in the squad provides much stronger value.

Jonty says…
I’m starting to think that we may have seen the best of Robin Van Persie during his sensational 531 point run over the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. I can’t see him replicating that form again. Of course there are significant positives. He plays for Manchester United, he is on penalties and, when fit, should be nailed-on to start. He’s also still capable of scoring sensational goals as his header in Holland’s opening World Cup game showed. But with fitness concerns remaining I’m not sure this 31-year-old will be essential again. Crucially he is 2.0 more than Wayne Rooney, who with assists and goals in his locker, as well as a good pre-season under his belt, looks to offer similar or better returns for far less money. Van Persie also misses the opening fixture – if Rooney shines that day, then the Dutchman will struggle to gain our attention as he once did.

D1sable says…
I’m not so sure. We all know Van Persie’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) history and what he can potentially offer but sometimes past performances cloud our judgment; more recent times suggests he’s lost a little something and has started to succumb to injuries again, though I suppose the trick here is to work out if that was down to David Moyes and ascertain whether Van Gaal can reignite his compatriot’s thirst for goals. The comparison with Wayne Rooney also works against him for me –for an additional 2.0, you’re basically paying for penalties (when he’s on the pitch at the same time) and with Van Gaal already looking at playing a front two, I don’t think there is enough value there.

7shadesofsmoke says…
Was Robin van Persie (RvP) ever essential? The age-old argument goes that RvP is the Fantasy manager’s comfort blanket, the easy choice for captaincy if you want guaranteed returns, but in his most productive season (2011/12) his 269 points came at a rate of 12.38 minutes per point (MPP). He was slightly quicker again in 2012/13 but had fewer minutes, registering 262 points at a rate of 11.91 MPP – slower than Theo Walcott in the same season, let’s not forget.

Considering his eternally mighty price tag, I did present a case for a non RvP captaincy strategy before the start of last season and I’d adopt the same stance again this year. Will Van Persie be a major factor again? I really do think so. Luis van Gaal will need his main man back at his best if he is to make United a force to be reckoned with once more, but is RvP worth the extra 2.0 over his inevitable strike partner, Wayne Rooney? That’s far less clear.

If Robin van Comfort Blanket registered a point every 12.49 minutes over the past three years – in two of which he won the Premier League Golden Boot -Wayne Rooney offers up a similarly consistent point every 12.94 minutes for considerably less over the same period. It would take a season of Luis Suarez proportions for the Dutchman to be tagged ‘essential’ in my plans.

Swanny14 says…
As a Man United fan, please excuse any excessive bias here. But yes, I don’t believe that RVP’s ‘essential’ days are behind him. In an underperforming side and with a whopping 14.0 price tag hanging heavily around his neck last season, many of us naturally fell out of love with the Dutchman as our ‘affections’ turned towards Luis Suarez. But Old Trafford is a very different place now. With Louis van Gaal at the helm, a certain spark seems to have returned to the United side (just watch some of the football they’ve been playing in pre-season, the link-up play is miles ahead of anything we saw from them last year) and Van Persie is certain to benefit from his close relationship with his former international coach.

Sure the Dutchman wasn’t in the finest of form in 2013/14, but Van Persie still bagged 16 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, and that’s with a midfield behind him that had about as much creativity as a sofa. If Van Gaal can get new signing Ander Herrera pulling the strings in the middle of the park, and figure out the ‘RVP, Rooney, Mata’ dilemma as David Moyes failed to do, then Van Persie – bar injuries – will have the platform to return to his title-winning heroics of 2012/13 and acquire his ‘essential’ status once again in the coming season.

Gavigon says…
I have a feeling that one of Robin Van Persie or Wayne Rooney will become essential. Which of them it is will come down to niggling injuries, and who Van Gaal decides is the attacking focal point – I’m favouring Rooney currently, but I don’t think it will be a clear picture until November or so.

Roscola says…
Those two explosive seasons were no fluke; we can’t doubt Van Persie’s credentials. Louis van Gaal knows and rates him, yet he failed to really ignite Van Persie at the World Cup and there are worrying signs that injuries are coming back to haunt the striker. From a Fantasy point of view, the 3-5-2 system negates any positional advantage he once had over Wayne Rooney and the extra money makes it look like the latter will always be a valid alternative to the Dutchman.

Mark Says…
My love affair with van Persie may well be at an end, but the soft spot I hold for him will doubtless have me considering acquisition at some point. Rooney’s form and the fact that Van Gaal is adamant on playing two central strikers does cast doubt over the potential on offer, however. For me, and doubtless many others, I need to see clear evidence that Van Persie is the stronger and more productive option over a consistent spell before I’d be willing to change the current thinking on the United strikers. Right now, Rooney has the edge and we’re hoping he can deliver value by keeping pace with this team-mate. Underestimating Van Persie is dangerous, however. He definitely has the ability to soar away from Rooney and the rest of the pack in the Golden Boot race, particularly if he can remain fit and the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Sergio Aguero suffer setbacks, fatigue and rotation. Events will need to align but that could happen. Evs and I could be snuggling under those RVP duvets by Christmas.

Krul & Foster is a popular choice as it seems the best £9m rotation where both keepers are nailed on.

How do *you* build a team?

Do you start from the front? The back? Pick the 5 players you want the most, and then fit in whoever else you can afford?

Or just autocomplete and hope for the best?

I pick my top 5 or so - Rooney, Mata, etc. and then fill in the holes according to the budget. But I'm sure there are many ways to do it.

I'd start with the cheapest keeper (or combo) I'd be happy with until the Jan WC.

After that, I would buy the player I cannot go without this year.
This should be a a player I could hand the arm band to & not think twice.

After that, I'm taking the *next* most important player to me & optimally he would be a mid if I've already taken a fwd & fwd if I've taken a mid. Although, I'm not too fuss about this...
Either way, he'd be a player I'd be happy to captain most weeks as well.

Following that, it's time to decide on my defensive strategy:
      -3 HH & 2 ubers
      -2 HH & 3 way
      -5 way rotation
The only catch here, they all have to play. No matter what.
So, if that means spending a ½mil more to buy a £4.5 or £5mil option just to be safe, so be it.
This is better than having to waste a transfer on some budget non-playing defender bleeding off value because I didn't plan ahead.

Now, I'm starting to tinker with the budget I have left & just go from there.
Although, the next player I choose should hopefully be a potential captain's choice too. As I'd like to have 3 solid options heading into the year.

Final note for my bench; I want as few £ there as possible.
As a result I'm not a fan on rotating £5mil defenders, 6mil mids or fwds either.

      Hope this helps mate...

      i did this (roughly) first:

      4.5/4.0
      5.5/5.0/5.0/4.0/4.0
      9/9/9/9/4.5
      10.5/10.5/5.5

then tinker with the price based on essential player needed. then choose player based on price bracket. make other template. repeat.

A few thoughts now that Spurs pre-season is over:

    - Back 4 is very uncertain. Before today I would have said Walker-Kaboul-Vert-Davies but Rose started over Davies and looked good first half, Vert hasn't played a minute of pre-season and Walker wasn't even in the squad. With a new signing (probably Musacchio) coming in too, Kaboul could be off soon. Hopefully Pochettino will give some clarity on this in press conference next week.
    - Bentaleb looks very good and could be a great option at 4.5 if he nails down a role. However with Paulinho and Dembele still to come back into the squad this is far from certain.
    - Lamela and Eriksen will both start, and they will both be influential. Eriksen and Lamela shared corners against Schalke but all pre-season the majority of corners have been taken short. Eriksen is still very dangerous from free-kicks though, and I don't think he even recorded an assist from corners last season (not 100% sure on this, but I can't remember one).
    - Who will start up front? Nobody knows. Soldado has looked promising in pre-season, both with his link-up play and goalscoring but Adebayor now has two goals in two games too, and even Kane has looked good (although Kane played behind Soldado today, so he's certainly 3rd choice striker).

Verdict? As a fan, promising. In terms of fantasy football, anyone other than Eriksen/Lamela is a huge risk.

A quick look at Aston Villa after the final friendly of their pre-season at Villa Park - a slightly underwhelming 0-0 draw with Serie A side Parma.

            Key points:
+ £4.0 FPL defender Alan Hutton held on to his starting berth and looks good for the season opener.
+ Captain Ron Vlaar returned to action at Half Time with Jores Okore joining him twenty minutes later. These two appear to be the first choice pairing, though it remains uncertain as to which formation Lambert will use (3 centre halves being a serious possibility).
+ Darren Bent is fit again. He emerged from the bench to strike the crossbar with an almost-winner in the dying moments and should have been assisted by Agbonlahor, but Gabby failed to find him in space.
+ Charles N'Zogbia maintained a healthy fist team presence and was involved in Villa's most threatening attacks and had a share of set pieces. He looks set for consideration ahead of the trip to Stoke.
+ Kieran Richardson provided the free kick from which Phillipe Senderos scored, though the goal was ruled out for offside.
+ New boy Cissokho watched on from the stands

            Starting XI
            Guzan
            Hutton, Senderos, Baker, Stevens

                It's looking likely.

Ultimately, nothing is a given with Villa at the moment, but at 4.0 Hutton is certainly looking a decent prospect.

            1) Why on earth would Soton buy a £10m keeper? That's the one area where they're not weak...

              1) Boruc is an egotistical disaster waiting to happen. Flashes of it every season, good keeper but has serious silliness stored up when he doesn't have to fight for his place. This will straighten him up.

We aren't attempting to replace 5 players with 5 players. We realistically can't attract £20m players and we sold players at a high premium. We can use the money to strengthen all areas of the squad. Buying Forster isn't at the expense of buying other players for areas which require investment. We are typically spending £8-10m on players or getting loans with a view to permanent deals, rather than making the mistake of paying more on risky investments.

Ramirez cost us £12m. I can't see QPR valuing him at anywhere near that and the club won't be willing to make a massive loss on him. I think Koeman wants to try and make a go of the Ramirez thing as Lallana and injury always prevented him from really getting time.

I really backed Ramirez to shine on FPL when he first came to the club. I'd love to think this is his breakout season but I just can't see it happening. I think you need someone really decent and proven in the Prem to ensure you have another strong season & to my Remy is the perfect fit. Can't believe you paid the same amount for him as we did Kagawa :O

What if you offered Wanyama + cash as they really need a CM?

If you keep Schneiderlin you could set up like this:

                    ........Schneiderlin

                    ......Tadic..........Ramirez

                    J Rod.............................Remy

                    ...............Pelle

Although, I would then buy another decent CM just to make things safe.

Wanyama and Davis are very capable CMs. You've shown poor knowledge of the squad. Tadic would never play deep and central like that. Schneiderlin can't cover for the flair of Ramirez and Tadic. Wanyama would allow Schneiderlin to roam and pick off players.

I'm a United fan, cut me some slack 😛

I really don't remember Schneiderlin's performances last season tbh so just assumed he was a really strong play making CDM (because of the Spurs speculation).

I knew Tadic was a winger but since he created so many chances over last 2 seasons I assumed he could maybe play CAM with J Rod & Remy on the wings.

Well don't suggest team sheets then 😉

Problem is Koeman plays 4-3-3, similar to how you've laid it out. Schneiderlin is a great DM but I think he'd be a bit limited by being tied to staying deep all the time, if that makes sense? Someone next him can hold back to give him freedom. I see it being Wanyama, Schneiderlin and X.

                            Yeah that makes complete sense.

Ironic as someone earlier today suggested United could play a midfield 3 like this:

                            ...........Herrera

                            ..Di Maria........Mata

I laughed as I thought it was a crazy idea, it would completely null the point of having Herrera who's a box to box mid.

Don't think he'd want to come to us. He messed Newcastle around enough and they're a bigger club in terms of reputation or prestige. He's got a massive ego, I can't see us soothing it.

If he doesn't make a move to another PL club it looks like he'll stay at QPR, surely he'd jump to you guys rather than stay there. Since you sold players at a premium, there is a chance of offering him bigger than usual wages too. Imagine a front 3 of J Rod, Pelle, Remy - it would be amazing!

We wouldn't bust our wage structure for him. The board want the club to be handled responsibly to slow down investment from the ownership. Pardew said that Newcastle withdrew because of Remy's attitude and it really doesn't surprise me. Plus he's had a glance at what a CL club can offer him - we wouldn't be able to compete with Liverpool's wage offers.

Rojo is still being negotiated on and Koeman has confirmed interest. That would be a massive signing.

I'd like one more winger but haven't heard much.

Hummels would be a great signing!

Oh yeah I remember the Rojo rumours from today, he'd be a great value replacement for Lovren. I think you've done a pretty strong job of rebuilding your squad this window & didn't really get why Southampton fans were so angry about the sales, since you bought Tadic & Pelle pretty quickly.

Hummels would make me VERY happy but only if we bought him for £30m or under. Any more than that would make me quite unhappy.

Also, selling Calum Chambers was fine imo as £12m is a lot of money and Clyne can easily play as a decent first team RB.

So in reality you've replaced/are about to replace everyone in a decent enough way imo.

                            * Chambers to N/A
                            * Lovren to Rojo hopefully
                            * Lallana to Tadic
                            * Lambert to Pelle
                            * Shaw to Bertrand

I only thought Bertrand's been a dodgy replacement. It's a shame Spurs were interested in B Davies, 'cos he would have been the perfect boy to replace Shaw for you.

Didn't realise he had 2 seperate release clauses! I thought Southampton may have been able to clinch him for between £10-12m. Fair enough, he's a no go at £15m.

Do you think that Ashley Young is a good alternative to have for Man U attacking cover if you've already got Rooney but can't afford Mata or should I just get Herrera

            Any ideas would be welcomed

I have Young personally, think he's good differential. he's been lighting it up in pre-season and at 5.5M worth a shot. I think Herrera is a great footie player but won't score big in fantasy... just my opinion.

I've watched most of the United matches in preseason and if Young plays half as good as he has been he's worth 5.5M.

            Any thoughts on this lot:

            DDG / Gilks
            Filipe Luis / B.Davies / N.Taylor / Clyne / Gamboa (possibly OOP)
            Hazard / Sanchez / Mata / Siggy / Snodgrass
            Rooney / Wickham / Diouf

Hey, guys. I'm running a classic league with some friends here in Mexico and each of us pays $250 pesos (around 10 pounds) to play. The first place gets $1200, the second $700 and the third $350. The last place has to pay an extra $50, we implemented this to avoid having people not playing by the end of the season. Who should get this $50 pesos?

I don't want to give it to the player with the least transfers, least yellow cards or the most goals or anything like that because it could cause people making a lot of transfers just to get those 50.

Which would be your criteria for giving that prize? Thanks! Be creative if you want!

currently on Luís and Shaw in the hope that they emerge as solid options but might switch to Cahil and Evans if the bam'ole gets twitchy.

Luis and Shaw are both risky. Not sure why you'd be considering them ahead of Cahill and Evans who are both more nailed on and offer goal threat.

because I have super high hopes for Shaw. I'm thinking a Coleman-esque performance so i desperately want him in.

The fact that i have the Cahill and Evans contingency plan illustrates the fact that i am not confident in their starts but i remain hopeful and won't change to the CBs until saturday AM

You not worried about Shaw's fitness though? LVG said he wasn't fit enough to hold the wing back position yet

not really. He looked good against Liverpool and played 80+ mins in that game.

I think LvG is making a point with him to kill any complacency or ego that he might have gained over the big money move. He's fit and i think he will play.

Taking risks for no real reason there, Terry/Cahill and Evans/Jones is a lot safer.

Thanks guys. TBH I don't understand the Evans love in here, I would have thought Jones was more nailed on than him. Any explanations why? Jones had more game time last season and pulled in more points!

more experienced, more reliable, a solid second centre back (as in hummels or someone being the main man), left-footed helps him too. I'd say Jones is equally likely to start the season though... Jones/New-CB/Evans

Ibe won;t get too many appearances, better to have someone who will play more regularly.
