QPR boss Harry Redknapp continue to strengthen his first-team squad for the season ahead with the loan acquisition of Mauricio Isla from Italian champions Juventus. The Chilean is the fourth player to arrive at Loftus Road this summer and follows Rio Ferdinand, Steven Caulker and Jordan Mutch to the club as Redknapp looks to prevent another drop down into the Championship:

After confirming the season-long deal via the R’s official website, Redknapp proceeded to talk up the 26-year-old’s prospects for the season ahead and reckons Isla will be a key figure for the London club:

“He’s a top player and we’re delighted to have him here. He showed his quality in the World Cup for Chile and it’s a great loan signing for us. He’s a versatile player, he’s full of energy. I’m confident he’ll be a really big asset for us this season.â€

Isla – who is believed to have turned down a number of offers to join up with QPR – was equally enthusiastic over the upcoming campaign:

“I am very happy to be here – this is the start of an exciting new adventure for me. Everybody knows that the Premier League is the greatest league in the world and the QPR proposal is very interesting and one I am very excited about. I hope this coming season is going to be great for both the club and myself. I will give 100 per-cent in every game to help QPR in the Premier League.â€

The History

Isla spent eight years in the Universidad Catolica youth system in his native Chile from 1999-2007. Starting off as a forward, he was converted into a defender but failed to play a single match for the club – instead, his displays in the 2007 FIFA Under 20 World Cup persuaded Italian outfit Udinese to hand Isla a five-year contract.

Afforded his Serie A debut in December 2007, Isla’s pace and stamina down the right flank quickly cemented his role as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation. A slow start to his career in the Italian top-flight produced just one assists over 42 league appearances in his first couple of campaigns before Isla served up six goals and 18 assists in his final 85 league matches before Juventus came calling in June 2012.

Over his two seasons with the “Old Ladyâ€, Isla failed to nail down a regular role. With Stephan Lichsteiner preferred on the right of Juventus’ 3-5-2, the Chilean was afforded just 18 league starts and 11 sub appearances and, over 47 matches in all competitions, chipped in with five assists.

On the international scene, Isla made his senior debut back in September 2007 and has proceeded to play 37 times for his country, including four appearances at Brazil 2014, and found the net on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

It’s somewhat telling that a change in tactics over the summer has preceded the Chilean’s arrival. Redknapp utilised a 4-4-1-1 in the Championship last season, with the occasional switch to 4-4-2, but the R’s boss has rolled out a 3-4-1-2 in recent matches – given Isla’s familiarity with the system, the new boy should settle quicker in his new environment.

Whilst Isla is versatile enough to be fielded in defence and in the centre of the park, a role on the right of the four-man midfield looks tailor-made and immediately casts doubts over Danny Simpson’s game time for the season ahead. Classified as a defender across the Fantasy games, the Chilean looks poised to offer us an out of position option under Redknapp – earlier today, he was priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), mirroring the cost of fellow new boy Steven Caulker, who netted five goals for Cardiff last time around.

With Rio Ferdinand at 4.5 and looking nailed on, though, many may baulk at a potential price of 5.0, bearing in mind Redknapp’s side mustered just 16 clean sheets in the Championship last term. Isla’s attacking potential could more than atone for that, though; if he can bring his Udinese form, there’s every reason to be optimistic over a player who affords the R’s plenty of top-level experience in the upcoming campaign.

The opening schedule hands the R’s home fixtures against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks and affords Redknapp the chance to make Loftus Road a fortress for the season ahead. With the likes of Ferdinand and Caulker bringing a much-needed quality to the back-three, Isla’s raids down the right could become a familiar for R’s fans this term and he gets off the mark early, has the quality to persuade many to get on board.

Missed the Community shield. Did Ramsay play in the hole behind giroud? I'm wanting someone who pulls the strings and it's between him and eriksen

not necessarily in the hole, more box-to-box.
arteta sits deep, wilshere in front, ramsey does have license to go forward with the two wingers and giroud.
but wilshere plays similar role to him as well.

I would get ramsey over eriksen if you can. but i've got both

LFC fan and I don't have a clue. I hope Sakho/Lovren start but I think it'll be Skrtel/Lovren based on yesterday. RB and LB will be two of Manquillo/Johnson/Enrique/Flanagan. Flanagan didn't feature yesterday. Johnson and Enrique shared LB with Manquillo having a full 90 at RB

CB- Lovren & Skrtel (Sakho to give competition)
RB - Glen Johnson with Manquillo featuring prominently
      This is my guess

i keep putting in sturridge then seeing i can have sterling for 3mil less and getting cold feet. i love sturridge but think he may just be a gw1 pick (would want him back later on) and feel that extra 3mil goes a long way

        It's not an extra 3m, it's an extra 1m.

        You downgrade Sturridge to Costa.

I'm keeping Hazard no matter what, so then I have to upgrade Eriksen to Sterling. So only an extra 0.5m in total.

So for me, its Costa + Sterling, or Sturridge + Eriksen

      None of them unfortunately.

But I'm going for Luis as I think he'll play the vast majority of games.

I don't believe for one second that Jose spent 20-odd million on a 28year old bench warmer. Obviously he will have to perform well when he's played to retain his spot, but he will be given plenty of chances that's for sure.

Many will disagree, but he's in my team and I've saved 0.5 over Cahill/Terry

anyone looking at holtby? has played more than any other spurs player this pre-season (couple of MOTM performances). He will likely be played in the double pivot (like fabregas at chelsea) or as a winger.
He is definitely a risk but has the potential to outscore Henderson and Siggy.

This isn't too say he *won't play* just that the Stoke mids are far from set.
      Shame to with their sched.

Prob for now but Sparky's trying to get Redmond, who'd challenge for Arnie's place.

Thinking of dropping Siggy and getting a 4.5 mid in order to upgrade my defence, but would mean having to start Bojan every week.. Thoughts?

I've thought about it, looking at fixtures purely than City away is the only challenging game in the first few weeks. But then, if he flops, changing him out could be awkward / requiring multiple transfers given his price bracket.

Definitely the right idea, means a better defense and less benched points.

I thought I was all set on going with just Krul (and Elliot) all season, but I am getting cold feet. I just don't like rotations, but I also don't like spending big for goalkeepers. What are you guys doing?

I had Bego + 4.0m for ages but decided on Foster and Krul. Don't want to rely on one keeper or risk needing to use a transfer

I am looking at Begovic + 4.0m myself, mostly because the uncertainly around the kindly-priced Stoke defenders.

Either Krul or Speroni, depending on how many 4m defs I feel like I can live with 😆

Someone said that the difference between the highest and lowest scoring keepers last season was less than 40 points, which is quite telling. But I don't know if it's true.

It's true that there is very little between them and premium GK's do not justify their price, it's true every year. Is Speroni still #1 after they signed that Forster fellow?

Southampton signed Forster, not Palace. I've heard rumblings that Pulis would rather play Hennessey than Speroni but I really don't think it's true.

I think that's one of the better rotations out there, together with NEW / SUN, though we do not know Sunderland's #1, I guess.

General consciousness here & according to FPL site is Begovic.
Great fixtures & a decent price.
          I can't argue with that.

          Although, I've gone with Speroni.
His opening game v. Arsenal is an obvious turn off but, for me this is a 20 week decision & frankly, TP's Eagles are just a better defensive side than most others in the league.

If / when Hennessey gets the nod I'll make the switch.
Kinda hope it happens actually... Who can say no to a free ½mil?

      Mariappa.

I wish I'd looked into Jerome Williams before now, I would have saved myself a lot of anguish. He is absolutely not a threat to Mariappa's Premier League gametime.

Ok, I guess I'll put a team list out today and see how it gets on...

    Bego, Krul

    Azpili, Jones, Cameron, Duff, Wisdom

    Ramsey, Mata, Siggy, Sterling, Boyd,

    Costa, Rooney, Dzeko.

    Hit me!

Not sure on azpi is he nailed on ?

Really like the mid and strikers though good job imo mate

Defence is obviously a bit week and I think the general consensus is that Cameron isn't nailed on

      Overall looks good though

Fancy sharing your thoughts on my team ?

        Foster Krul

        Rooney Sturridge Jovetic

I had Foster Krul until recently, I defo think it could work, but I feel Bego, DDG or Howard to be less of a gamble

I have the same Issue with luis and do with Azpi, im off to the game tomorrow so I hope that helps me figure out who is nailed.

I like PVA, think he will be great, dont really know much about Naughton or Naylor, and Im not sure how nailed Bruce is, I know hes like 20% selected, but he may not start.

Midfield is very nice, Mata for Player of the year, Isgrove could be a cool differential.

Very cool strikers, im currently swinging between Dzeko and Jovetic, landed on Dzeko at the moment tho. Rooney is essential, and Sturridge could be great, just slightly overpriced if u ask me, so i went to sterling instead.

hope something in that is of some use to you!
