Aaron Ramsey finds the net as Arsenal clinch the Community Shield with a comfortable win over City. Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge pick up a goal and assist apiece as Liverpool cruise past a weakened Dortmund, Cesc Fabregas steers Chelsea to victory against Ferencvaros, while Moussa Sissoko grabs Newcastle’s winner over Real Sociedad:

Gunners Sweep Aside City
Goals from Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud helped Arsenal to an easy 3-0 win over City in the Community Shield yesterday.

Arsene Wenger made just a couple of changes from the Gunners’ previous line-up, as Kieran Gibbs and Yaya Sanogo came in for Nacho Monreal and Giroud. This saw Ramsey fielded in the centre of the attacking midfield three, with Alexis Sanchez and Cazorla on either side before the Chilean made way for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the break. Ramsey’s strike – his first of the summer – brings him to prominence ahead of next Saturday’s opener at home to Palace and with Wenger set to rest Mesut Ozil, the Welshman’s more advanced role could push his current 24% ownership higher before the Gameweek 1 deadline. Cazorla looks the differential in the pack, though – the Spaniard has been picked up by only 2% of FPL managers but is offering early indications he could find his stride quickly this time round.

As the days tick down until the deadline, Wenger conceded that the 26%-owned Sanchez is not yet fully fit after his World Cup exertions with Chile, though was complimentary on the wide man’s brief performance:

“Sanchez was lively, still not completely ready physically but he was very exciting. He was always dangerous, always a threat and gives us great qualities on the counter-attack.â€

At the back, Callum Chambers continued alongside Laurent Koscielny for the third successive match. With Per Mertesacker just returning to training today, the summer signing now looks poised to start against Palace next weekend but, despite a kind 4.5 price tag, his acquisition looks a very short-tern option as the German builds up his match sharpness. Wenger confirmed that, although he is still looking to bring in another central defender, Chambers will certainly have a part to play over the course of the season ahead:

“For a 19-year-old he had an outstanding performance today. He can challenge both centre backs and that’s what you want. You cannot play with two centre backs the whole season; that means he will play. You saw Monreal who played one or two games at centre back and he did well…What it does in my head is [make me think that] Chambers is among the best three and if I can find another one I will do it. But to find another one of that quality will not be easy.â€

City Slump to Wembley Loss
Manuel Pellegrini handed starts to new boys Willy Caballero and Fernando, while in-form Stevan Jovetic was partnered by Edin Dzeko up top in yesterday’s 3-0 loss to the Gunners. Despite starting regulars such as Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure in midfield, it’s fair to say City were far from full strength; Gael Clichy continues to fill in at right-back, while Matija Nastasic partnered Dedryck Boyata in the heart of defence. Elsewhere, David Silva was afforded 45 minutes off the bench as a replacement for Nasri, while up front, although Jovetic managed the full 90 minutes, Dzeko owners will be a little concerned after the Bosnian was replaced by James Milner on 59 minutes.

According to the City website, Pellegrini hinted to journalists that little should be looked into yesterday’s line-up, though. With the likes of Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, Bacary Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta, Fernandinho and Martin Demichelis only returning to training last Monday, the Chilean admitted he has yet to size up his options for the Sunday’s trip to Newcastle:

“We’ve had seven players who only played five days who weren’t in consideration – lots more who only played eight or nine days. It’s difficult to be ready in two weeks. We’ll see during the week which players are ready and which are not. We were missing key players but I think the lack of pace in the first-half was the main problem…The goalkeeper is the same as any other position – most of the players who played today played all of pre-season. All the 22 players in the squad are number 1 in all of the positions – we need them all.â€

Coutinho Orchestrates Reds Romp
The little Brazilian turned on the style as Liverpool hammered an under-strength Dortmund 4-0 at Anfield yesterday lunchtime. Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge both delivered a goal and assist against the Germans, while new signing Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson also found the net in a commanding display.

Rarely seen in many RMT’s around the site, Coutinho fired more shots than any midfielder last season but a dire conversion rate meant he netted just five times. With an 8.0 price tag attached, he sits in just 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams, compared to Henderson’s 14% and the popular Raheem Sterling’s (who earned an assist yesterday) 27% ownership but his display offers a degree of optimism that the Brazilian may be set to step up in light of Luis Suarez’ departure.

After the game, Rodgers hailed the Coutinho’s display and admitted yesterday’s role in “the hole†behind Sturridge – with Henderson and Sterling out wide – gets the best out of the midfielder:

“He’s so gifted as a player. He’s just magical. His ability to get out of tight situations and his view of the game is incredible. And that’s his best position – playing between the lines, he doesn’t get marked. He drops to the back of midfield, he draws defenders out, and the weight of his passes is phenomenal. He was outstanding, and what he’s added to his game is that relentless pressing. He’s very strong under pressure on the ball, and puts pressure on the opposition when he’s not on the ball.”

The Reds boss also took time out to praise Lovren and fellow new boy Javier Manquillo. Fielded at right-back, the latter’s (5.0 in FPL) display at both ends of the pitch had his manager purring:

“Dejan was perfect – he’s what we’ve been looking for since Jamie Carragher left. He’s a very dominant centre-half. He’ll go and attack the ball, reads the game incredibly well and you can see his leadership qualities with his talking and guidance of the back four. Like he showed us last year, he is dominant in the air in the other box, attacking it. I thought he was excellent. And young Javier Manquillo was outstanding, at 20 and playing his first game at Anfield having only joined this week. His fitness level was very good. He’s the type of full-back I like – he can get tight to people, stop crosses and defend well, but also then has the energy to attack and get forward. He was very, very good.”

Rodgers also discussed the strength and depth of his squad for the season ahead. A raft of second-half changes saw Liverpool shift to a 4-3-3 and afford new boy Rickie Lambert game time off the bench – with Champions League duties also on this season’s agenda, the Northern Irishman reckons his summer signing spree will stand his side in good stead:

“One of the pleasing things for me today was that I could make changes in the game, put players on and still feel we were strong. That hasn’t been the case since I’ve been here just because of a lack of depth. But today I felt we could still make changes and keep the desire and commitment – and the quality, very importantly – within the team. With maybe one or two more to come, by the end of August we’ll hopefully have good depth in our squad to challenge.”

Sissoko Wins it for Magpies
Having fielded a 4-4-2 for the previous two matches, Alan Pardew rolled out a 4-4-1-1 formation for yesterday’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad. With Siem de Jong missing yet again, Remy Cabella tucked in behind lone striker Emmanuel Riviere, with Yoan Gouffran and Moussa Sissoko fielded on the flanks, while at the back, Mike Williamson got the nod to partner Fabricio Coloccini, with Massadio Haidara again selected at left-back ahead of Paul Dummett. Sissoko’s strike came courtesy of a Gabriel Obertan assist and takes the Magpies record to five wins, a draw and two defeats from eight pre-season matches. De Jong – who was sidelined on five separate occasions for Ajax last season – has now failed to play since limping off against Wellington Phoenix on July 26 and his 5% of FPL owners may be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere.

Bruce Rings the Changes
For yesterday’s trip to Stuttgart, Steve Bruce named an entirely different starting XI from the side that defeated AS Trencin in the Europa League last Thursday. The likes of Nikica Jelavic and new boys Thomas Ince, Andrew Robertson and Harry Maguire were all handed starts as the Tigers prevailed 2-1 against the German outfit. Robertson and David Meyler provided the goals in a game that saw Bruce made nine alterations over the second period – in spite of some impressive showings, it seems likelier that the midweek line-up against Trencin is more indicative of the Hull manager’s intentions for the opener at QPR. Intriguingly, Ince partnered Jelavic up front, suggesting he could be utilised centrally in addition to out wide over the course of the campaign.

Cesc Seals Chelsea Win
An excellent sole effort from Cesc Fabregas helped Chelsea to a 2-1 win over Ferencvaros last night. Having played two 45-minute matches on Friday evening, Jose Mourinho made several alterations to his starting XI last night, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis fielded as the full-backs on either side of Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen. Petr Cech retained his place in goal, though, after Thibaut Courtois was ruled out with a minor knock.

Elsewhere, Mourinho fielded Andre Schurrle, Willian and Fernando Torres behind Didier Drogba further up the field before the latter was replaced by Oscar after being forced off injured during the first-half. With a game against Real Sociedad tomorrow evening in mind, Mourinho made a number of half-time changes, which saw Luis withdrawn and Mohamed Salah fielded as a full-back as the Blues, chased a 1-0 deficit – once again, we’re no nearer to solving the Chelsea defensive conundrum with concerns surrounding Mourinho’s intended back-four.

Chelsea’s two most popular FPL midfielders made their appearances after the break. Fabregas came on for Willian at half-time while Eden Hazard was handed a half-hour run out after replacing goalscorer Ramires – the Spaniard’s second strike of the summer sealed victory and the manner of his goal suggests he’s high on confidence ahead of the season opener against Burnley. After the game, Mourinho explained the former Arsenal skipper is vital to his side’s prospects next season:

“My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield. Fabregas is the player we need to modify a little bit the profile of our game, which we need. We want to give the next dimension to our game in midfield and Fabregas is this kind of player which I like to call ‘the seven’, because he’s not the six and he’s not the eight. Normally the seven is the winger, I also call the seven the guy in midfield who’s not the six, he’s not the eight. Or he’s a six and eight at the same time. So he’s a seven and we need him a lot.â€

I wrote this yesterday here on Chelsea - incase you missed it so reposting. Incase you have any question, ask them and I'll answer them (maybe an hour or two late though).

    >> Willian has been good in flashes - but looks awfully short of match fitness. Andre Schurrle on the other hand is working incredibly hard. Brilliant vertical runs and gets into loads of goal-scoring opportunity. He should start against Burnley and looks a good punt for early wildcarders. If Schurrle keeps playing well and in top form - I won't be surprised to see him playing game after game. Jose has his favourites and there were times last year (most clear on Azpi-Cole) where he refused to rotate (very unlike Rafa).

Though last season he was promptly benched after those 2 goals against Stoke and that goal against Man City.

    >> Fabregas works much better in a 3 man midfield from a FANTASY perspective we saw today than when he is in the pivot (hasn't looked as good in the number 10 role). The one time we have seen Oscar and Fabregas together - it's been Oscar as the No#10 and Fab with Matic. However, Oscar's intelligence means that Fab bombs forward alot and he comes back, and the formation thus keeps interchanging between a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-3-3. Fabregas on that game however was quiet.

    >> Hazard on the other hand has been drifting out of games too. His performance is a little better than last preseason, where he barely cared about the game. He is taking on and beating defenders with ease but isn't showing the kind of commitment and desire by other players. He has had this criticism before though of not taking friendlies and training seriously - though Jose said he had ironed that out. Last time, that resulted in a very dry opening spell for him before hitting top form in mid-season.

However, many Chelsea fans (including me) are really optimistic that this is when Eden Hazard has his Gareth Bale-like season - here's an article for further reading.

    http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2014/8/4/5963205/unlocking-eden-hazard

    >> Diego Costa's off the ball movement adds alot more for midfielders - but his goals hae usually come back from through balls and run in behind. Hasn't yet shown himself capable of breaking down deep defences (apart from that wonder goal).

    >> Be prepared for disappointment if you own a Chelsea fullback. Right now, Ivanovic looks the best bet - he has the most minutes for an outfielder in the last 2 seasons. However, Cahill is the one if you want a security of starts. I thought Luis was a safe bet since he is way more attacking than Azpilicueta and we have easy games initially - but Jose has played given Azpilicueta and Luis close to equal time on the left.

    >> John Terry should be a regular initally. Later on might get conserved with CL, due to his age. Zouma has been making basic mistakes in preseason and I am not sure Chelsea can trust him - Kalas looked way more assured. Cahill-Ivanovic doesn't work as a duo for me. Both are penalty box defenders who keep backpeddling and intent to block. Terry brings the best out of Cahill and being captain he should play most games.

Yesterday was I think the first time in 8 preseason games he got zero action - probably was being preserved by Jose.

    >> Chelsea did switch to a 3-5-2 last season on occasions (Everton away, Norwich away and Cardiff at home initially). If you are wondering, if there is only one recognized striker on the pitch then Hazard or Schurrle go uptop along with him. Along with that, one of the wingers (Hazard, Willian, Schurrle, Salah) or Ramires cover the wingback slots. Hazard leaves loads of space in behind as a wingback.

    For further reading: http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2013/10/20/4858014/chelsea-3-5-2-jose-mourinho-tactics

    >> Oscar doesn't look like he is in the form we saw at the start of last season right now - he is dictating play more. In the very remote chance of you thinking about him, forget it. Get someone like Coutinho at that price or save and get one of those shiny 9.0 midfielders.

    >> Also of note, the defence has been shaky this pre-season. While we haven't seen a complete Chelsea XI play a full game till now - the defence hasn't been as good as it was last pre-season. I think it will be sorted out by the time we kick off at Turf Moor.

    >> Courtois has had a injury. According to Kristof Terreur (‏@HLNinEngeland): Thibaut Courtois still has a minor injury, so unavailable for this friendly. Will probably be back against Sociedad on Tuesday. #CFC. I think Courtois will get games initially to prove himself - can't see why else he would stay.

Fabregas is far from what I'd call a box to box midfielder. How often do you see him charging back and tackling hard?
          He's a 6 and an 8 which equals a 7 so he's a 14 which makes him 2 7's. Kapeesh

            No silly. 6+8=14

Then we take this number and divide by x. in this case x is 2 as this is the total number of gradients in the specified equation. This gives us 7. We can take this analysis further by multiplying this number to the power of 10 which gives us 282475249. But don’t want to be putting words in Mourinhos mouth.

He failed to mention the 9 which comes after 8 and before 10. This tells me that he will play the 7 role which is neither the 6, 8, 9 or 10. He didn’t even mention the 6 times table which is odd. I think that’s maybe his weak point. He also never mentioned Algebra and SohCahToa which is fundamental in the foundations on numbers imo.

My thoughts on the Chelsea backline situation.

Based on what I have read, opinions on here and my opinion of course.

Basically you only have 5 relevant players.

    1) John Terry - the heartbeat of the defence and Mourinhos favourite. Should start the early games and is in good goal scoring form this pre season. 2nd highest scoring defender last year and 9th overall. A big thing in his advantage is the international friendlies early in the season. Having retired from international duty and his CB partners both regulars for their national team should make him the least rotated CB among the early GWs

    2) Gary Cahill - The most solid of the Chelsea CBs. Should be the second most nailed on over the early fixtures. Has to play internationals which may get him a rest either before or after.

    3) Branislav Ivanovic - Thirteen less points then JT last year with 120 more minutes yet still gets a higher price tag. But the big Serbian loves to get forward. However, Ivanovic is the Chelsea defender I am least high on. I do not believe he is a Mourinho type of player. Mourinho likes to play a defensively sound game plan and Ivan can be caught out bombing forward. In my opinion I think Ivanovic will play the rotation man for both RB and CB. Ivanovic is also a starter for his National team which may give him cause for rest.

    4) Cesar Azpilicueta - I think because of Ivanovics defensive, Azpilicueta will be the favoured RB. He had a very solid year playing OOP on the left side and is defensively strong. Mourinho like to have his outside defenders to play on their preferred side so they dont have to cut back to cross on their preferred foot. Azpilicueta is also not a starter for the Spanish national team which may means he doesnt need a week off. Also their is some concern about Felipe Luis starting the first few GWs. Who will start at LB then? Azpilicueta. If Luis plays, who will start at RB? Azpilicueta. Him and Terry are the most nailed for GW1 to 10 I believe.

    5) Felipe Luis - Luis is a natural Left footer which is a tick for Mourinhos system. Also I think he was Athleticos best all round performer last year. However he is not a natural goal scorer ala Coleman. I think Luis is the most nailed on of all Chelsea defenders, but not from GW1. Yes he may be eased in for a couple of weeks but he will nail that LB role so keep on eye on when he starts.

I hope this helps. Good luck with the season fellow managers.

Same price for Siggy and Arnautovic.

18 Chelsea clean sheets makes a budget midfield score 12-13 goals to get the same points.

Could be viewed as flawed thinking but something to think about none the less

I like it. I want Lukaku and Lovren down the line. So I may start of with this front 3 and drop out one of them when Lukaku gets fit and has better fix and swap Evans for Lovren when Uniteds fix get harder.
I think having both 6.0's could be a stroke of genius. If one of them does a Ramsey u will catch the price rises.
Would you not have Rio over PVA tho?

Kicking off today's discussion is Roscola and his 3-5-2 deliberations.....

Jonty, any way you can make it so that the RMT discussion doesn't spam the community articles? Articles which are previously posted get drowned out quickly.

'I like to obfuscate so that I sound like a maverick. Cesc is a midfielder who can play in various positions and I don't know which is the best for him. With this in mind I've invented a new fake position for him called the seven. It means I can always be right about where he was playing which makes me even more arrogant than I was before.'

      Rooney or Costa. Probably Rooney.
      - Good fixture
      - PKs, FKs, and Corners
      - LVG will want a convincing first home game win
      - Great pre season form
      - Team's looking up
      - He'll be their main man up top with RVP out, performs better by himself.
      - Swansea are more attacking under Monk, not so many CS under him

All positives, and there really aren't any negatives.

Chelsea defence pre season. Played 9, kept 1 clean sheet (1.5 if you count the half against Fenerbache), conceded 10. So far.

Between GW's 5-11 Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Cry Palace all away. As well as Arsenal at home.

Good luck trying to figure out which 6m+ player is nailed for that run.

They will CS every second game, regardless of preseason.

more likely to keep clean sheets against the harder teams because they play more defensively in those games.

      Terry and Cahill are nailed.

It just points to how Mourinho started last season, more attacking and more open to counters. He changed when he started to concede too many.

I agree the 5-11 will prob be very tight defensively but CL games are around that time so there will be travel and possibly rotation.

Non Chelsea def owner here too!

Nailed on? To play in central midfield we have:

Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Davis, Taider, Ramirez potentially, JWP, Cork.

A fit and willing Schneiderlin will be in - Koeman has kept him because he sees Morgan as vital to his long-term plans. As for the suspicions of Morgan leaving - I can't see that happening when Spurs are offering less than half our valuation. We haven't let any players go on the cheap and it won't start with Koeman's favourite.

So that would leave two positions if Koeman sticks to his 4-3-3 of pre-season (though he's shown doubts about that too). I think Wanyama would get the nod because he's experienced at this level and can anchor the midfield to allow Schneiderlin the freedom to roam and pick off players. I think Cork will be Wanyama's understudy.

That leaves one position. Ramirez is clearly talented on his day. Koeman has said how much he values Davis' experience. Taider made a great impact on his debut and really impressed the manager. JWP has been first choice with all the uncertainty and scored a stunner.

Now it's incredibly possible that Morgan won't play until the window slams shut. So that means those players would be vying for two spots and JWP's chances are good. But after that, it's very very tight. And for those who believe Schneiderlin will go - if he did, he wouldn't go without a replacement so JWP's fantasy prospects are unchanged.

the most important thing when building a team at the start of the season is picking nailed on players who you know are going to deliver points - players like ramsey, sturridge, chelsea defence.

People going with Bojan, UTD defence etc - all are untried and could be a car crash waiting to happen. I am all going for the odd risk (lamela myself), but just because you see many people/sheeps on here shoving the latest bandwagon in their team, it does not make them safe.

    Be careful

Don't agree ManU defence is risky for the start of this season though

fixtures too easy to ignore - and van Gaal has a track record for solid defenses. And at £.5.5 Evans is as good value as any defender and 100% nailed on.

there's absolutely every reason for united to be risky at the start of the season.

New formation, new manager, on the back of a crap season defensively, 3 CBs prone to making mistakes
