There may be under a week left under the 2014/15 season gets underway but for many Fantasy managers, the midfield dilemma is yet to be resolved. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, in particular, the player price list has handed us numerous options to consider for our five-man midfields, with ten players coming in at 9.0 or over:

In this, our latest article for members, we take a look at four of the main contenders – Eden Hazard, Aaron Ramsey, Juan Mata and Raheem Sterling – currently on Fantasy radars.

Sterling has netted in two of his last four appearances and, after notching nine times last term, is backed by many to step up for Liverpool after Luis Suarez’ departure. Ramsey’s 10 goals and nine assists in just 23 appearances last season has catapulted the Welshman into the premium bracket at 9.0, with his strike in yesterday’s Community Shield handing us a timely reminder of his talents. Mata (9.0) has been one of Louis van Gaal’s star performers in the role in “the hole” in a new 3-4-1-2 formation, whilst the 10.0-priced Hazard, despite only returning to pre-season action last week, sits in 22% of squads ahead of fixtures against promoted pair Burnley and Leicester in his first two fixtures.

Casting an eye back to last season, then, we delve into the data and compare their respective displays. First up, we assess each player’s creativity and distribution.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Liverpool played a behind closed doors friendly vs Burnley today, details are hard to come by, but it seems that its mostly players who didn't start against Dortmund yesterday that played.
    Lineup:

Jones, Kelly, Toure, Sakho, Enrique, Coates (played as DM), Can, Allen, Ibe, Lambert, Suso

Liverpool won 2-1, Lambert scored a brace, not sure about the assists or the Burnley goal.

Evans more senior of the lads and was part of a good defensive run with Ferdinand when Vidic was out season before last. By that I mean he has a record of being solid when fit.

Those first two Chelsea fixtures are irresistible.

    Fabregas, Costa & DDG/4m

    or

    Hazard, Costa & 4.5/4 GKs

really stuck on this one. It looks like it's the last decision I have to make.

Mostly, I'm hearing rumors that he'll play out wide. I find this an odd mark against him, since any of the Swansea wingers over the last two seasons would have been OK picks at 6.0, had they been nailed on, and Siggy also has some set pieces.

As we move closer and closer to deadline, are we overlooking something as we fixate on the fixtures game and how to shave 0.5m here and there, worry about rotations and potential bargains.

Fact is we can only haphazardly make 'educated' guesses at this. But one fact that is getting hard to ignore for me is...

...the fact that Liverpool and City attacks are basically fixture proof. I don't think there's a need to back this up with alot of stats and data.

No Suarez definitely is a big change for LFC, but in seasons past, we've seen how other players step up from the shadow of a big player leaving the club. There's no reason why Coutinho can't pick up some slack and dictate play (while I still have reservations over his fantasy potential) and build on the great work last season.

Just sharing my feelings at the moment as I'm starting to worry about not being a Liverpool and City striker at the start, considering how popular they are across the game.

Hmm I was adamant that I wouldn't touch Liv attack with no Suarez, but definitely been waning on this recently. Question is who? Sturridge is the obvious choice...do like your Coutinho punt though.

I agree Shifty, however in every team something has to give, and usually its 'attacking cover' from one particular big team. For me I'm currently missing an Arsenal attacker but I have one from every other top 6 side including 2 from United.

Definitely agree that inevitably, there will be some sort of compromise. Fabregas over Hazard, Ramsey over Sanchez, Henderson over Sterling. I just feel that in the big teams especially, 'bargains' are few and far between (Henderson just MIGHT be the only one).

I'm starting to see the Wisdom (:D) of Jonty's hot topic re: filling team with players from the top attacking sides. We've already seen the progression from earlier in pre season where likes of Tadic, Pelle, De Jong, Arnautovic were in plenty of teams. Not saying they won't do well...but I prefer to play the percentages when there's so much flux at start of season with the transfer window still open and teams finding their feet

I think that's a great front 8, but I would question whether Henderson is really a better pick than Sterling even at 2.5m less? Of course, it would allow a better defence. But as I was just replying to Pepereina Pizza below, I tend to build my squad around my attack...which just usually ends up with a lean defence.

Not saying my strategy is the best, but I just think maybe the small decisions like Jovetic over Dzeko to save 0.5m is being a bit too clever and if we want to pick players from City and Liverpool, i would have no hesitation paying the premium even if it means sacrificing in defence abit.

Might be alone in this 😀

Its a tough one and in order to pay the extra I'd need to make massive sacrifices at the back. Of course that could still prove to be worthwhile. I don't mind the concept of 'coverage' and in order to cover yourself completely sometimes the you have to go with the cheaper alternative (Hendo over Sterling etc).

It could also be tempting to go with complete 'attacking cover' However I'm not convinced it will work. Unless Henderson really does step up and becomes heavily involved in Liverpools attack.

It's pretty clear to me: Sturridge costs 1m more than Wayne Rooney, Yaya costs more than any mid.

When you can get value at 9m (ramsey/mata/fab/dzeko/giroud), it makes less sense to splurge on Yaya/Sturridge because you have to trade in a second (any 9m player name here) for a template Siggy or a punt.

It's going to take a repeat performance for people to buy into that. What are the other options? Invest in Aguero now? no thanks.

I haven't mentioned Silva because he's made of paper, and City rotates more than any other team. Nasri, to my eye, is an expensive punt.

I completely agree with this, as in certain circumstances there are "value" players but not because of pure pricing reasons (Yaya aside). If Aguero were fit and banging them in in preseason, we'd see alot less Dzekos and alot of Agueros.

I was coming more from the lines of shaving off $ from attack just to have a better defence for rotation purposes...which is flawed imo. I always build my team around the attack, not the other way around. To each his own I guess, but I would much rather risk going big and chasing assists and goals rather than hoping my defenders don't concede in the 93rd minute.

Mark my words, Dzecko will be the one who is dropped when Aguero returns, not Jovetic. Despite people saying Dzecko provides a balance next to Aguero because Jovetic and Aguero are too similar, I can see Pelligrini getting Jovetic and Augero working together spectacular ly.

Yeah I also don't buy the Dzeko will be nailed on argument. Jovetic didn't have much luck last year with injuries and he is less of a donkey player which is probably a good thing. I see no reason why Aguero can't lead the line with Jovetic in behind.

Out of interest, is there any reason you left Silva out of the comparison? His stats (I won't say which) match up the same if not better for some of the key threats and involvement figures.

I know he's being overlooked by many with Aguero unlikely to start the season to create for, but for those members who can see the above stats, have a look at how Silva compares.

Compare his average minutes per attempt against the 4 above, he'd be third. Ok he'd be 5th for his goal conversion stats, but coupled with his average minute per chance created he's surely an option if he can stay injury free?

He doesn't need to be the next Ramsey, he's 6 mill and Ramsey is 9 mill, he needs to be 2 thirds of Ramsey, so if he gets 10 goals and 10 assists this season (got 4 and 7 respectively last season from a supposed deep position)

I'm not going for him but I can understand why some would, he has a great engine to get into goalscoring positions with a bit of practice..

I have one. In isolation those stats are great, in their teams less so. You dont want the players doing all the work and not getting full reward, the premium paid isnt worth it. Why not just get the final touch and take the glory.

Right now, i think so. No diea what's up with Huth. Would normally be a shoe-in, but his big injury last season has messed things up.

When you add in Ward's baps & assists from last season you get a nice 4 PPG

when you look purely at goals conceeded it doesn't look good, then when you consider the number of games played

Under Holloway it was an average of almost 2 per game, under Pulis almost 1 every 2 games

anyway of squeezing out 1.0 to get Sturridge?

    Bego, Gilks

    Evans, Cahill, Ward, PvA, Wisdom

    Ramsey, Hazard, Mata, Siggy, 4.5

    Rooney, Costa, Austin

Can only really see Rasmey to Eriksen/Lamela or Hazard to Fab

      whats wrong with costa?

drogbas injury dismisses any fears of rotation

but fab for hazard or cahill to lovren / debuchy

KEEP RAMSEY 😀 Pick 2 of these:

      Austin to Fletcher
      Bego to Green/Krul/Mannone
      Cahill to Azpi
      PvA to Hutton

well I'm not parting with Austin so that is out. If I want Sturridge I think the last 2 will be what i go for

Morning folks. Just trying to solve the final puzzle of my attack in an otherwise settled team!

    A) Eriksen in a 3-5-2

    B) Dzeko in a 3-4-3
(other options for 8.5m = Bony Giroud Ade)

I want to go with Eriksen as he was golden a the end of last season and has the slightly better opening fixtures. Think it's better just to stick with a 3-4-3 and pick one of Dzeko/Bony/Giroud/Ade?

Yes imo. I think the poor Magpies will get into trouble in the City.

Dzeko is surely nailed until Negredo returns, which may be a while yet.

also puzzled about mata and giroud in similar situation

I think due fixtures 3-5-2 and then when arsenal fixtures get much better, week 8, 3-4-3
