There may be under a week left under the 2014/15 season gets underway but for many Fantasy managers, the midfield dilemma is yet to be resolved. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, in particular, the player price list has handed us numerous options to consider for our five-man midfields, with ten players coming in at 9.0 or over:

In this, our latest article for members, we take a look at four of the main contenders – Eden Hazard, Aaron Ramsey, Juan Mata and Raheem Sterling – currently on Fantasy radars.

Sterling has netted in two of his last four appearances and, after notching nine times last term, is backed by many to step up for Liverpool after Luis Suarez’ departure. Ramsey’s 10 goals and nine assists in just 23 appearances last season has catapulted the Welshman into the premium bracket at 9.0, with his strike in yesterday’s Community Shield handing us a timely reminder of his talents. Mata (9.0) has been one of Louis van Gaal’s star performers in the role in “the hole†in a new 3-4-1-2 formation, whilst the 10.0-priced Hazard, despite only returning to pre-season action last week, sits in 22% of squads ahead of fixtures against promoted pair Burnley and Leicester in his first two fixtures.

Casting an eye back to last season, then, we delve into the data and compare their respective displays. First up, we assess each player’s creativity and distribution.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

But also consider Costa and Bojan. Infact, even then, still A.

Okay I've dropped Evans for Chester. Anyone else going without a defender from the top 7? I need some safety in numbers 😆

      O/

I'm currently going uber at the back with this lot - thoughts?

      Foster, Myhill
      PVA, Chester, Mariappa, Wisdom, Bartley
      Hazard, Ramsey, Mata, Eriksen, Moore
      Rooney, Costa, Dzeko

Other 4.5m and 4.0m defender options being Rio, Naylor & Hutton

Yeah, going with the theory of cleanies being harder to predict at the start and so lumping on premium guys in attack.

The Ramsey vs Sanchez is still a tricky one though, despite Rambo scoring in the CS.

Rambo is a cert for me, I really rate Sanchez but I think the best strategy is to go with his proven, cheaper teammate and see how he settles in over the first few weeks.

    Krul / Myhill

Sanogo is not a secure enough starter imo. All your players, even your subs should start matches.

Defence is a bit weak ish considering the attack. My defence is cheaper, but my attack is a lot stronger.

Personally would have 2 4.0s on the bench and push all the funds to 3 starting defenders, or, better still, the attack.

That's not the problem. The problem is that most RMTers don't rate other teams. They go on there just for themselves.

If everyone rated teams while they're waiting for replies there wouldn't be a problem.

The major problem is the lack of people hanging in that thread that is why there are so many few replies. Many people ignore that there is an RMT thread. When they visit FFS, they will immediately go to the main thread. A link to RMT thread should be visible on the main page or some instruction in a banner or something...

Mathematically if every rated two teams while they wait, everyone could have two replies.

People who aren't posting RMTs shouldn't have to go through rating them.

Many must literally post their team and then lie back and hit f5.

Well they aren't enough "raters" but more "RMT posters". Many FFS regulars like us don't bother rating others teams in the RMT thread so it is also our fault in a sense. How many times per day do you go to the RMT thread?
IMO this separate thread for really a bad concept...

Stats for goal scoring defenders lie.

Skrtel only ever scored 2 goals at best in 5 odd years then scored 7 last year.

Hangelaand once scored 6 in a year and has never scored since.

Gary Cahill once scored 5 at Bolton, never scored more than 3 since.

Goalscoring defenders not called Baines or Kolarov are pot luck

Agreed. Another question is who'll be putting in the FKs this season? Whittingham was brilliant last season. Don't see anyone with that sort of service in QPR's squad.

Ivanovic, 4,3,5,4 goals in last four seasons.

          Terry 2,3,6,4,2 in last 5.

They attack the ball with some serious aggression and set piece takers aim specifically for them. It's the same with Caulker.

Forget goals, Rio will get injured. Debate over

I hardly think you can compare two of the seasoned best attacking defenders in the league with Caulker, who's done it once, far more akin to Hangelaand or Cahill like I said.

Even with Terry there you can see that arguably the best attacking from corners defender in the league has a 5 season average of 3.2, hardly prolific. You'd imagine Caulker, playing for a hugely worse team, won't have chances that good

Caulker scored more goals last season than Ferdinand has scored in the PL ever, so I have to disagree on the goal threat. Ferdinand is still a decent pick though.

By the way I am in no way condoning Ferdinand, I do not rate that QPR defence that was by no means in the Championship. This is a big step up and we saw how great Cardiff were last year even with Caulker.

And Arry isn't exactly a Pulis or a Bruce.

There's better defences for 4.5 and definitely better ones for 5

Set my team up a little late this season. This is what i ended up with without any research or posting here. Tell me how rubbish it is.

    Foster, Krul
    Terry, Shaw, Caulker, Clyne, Moore
    Mata, Fabregas, Sterling, Siggurdson, Albrighton
    Rooney, Giroud, Dzeko

    Cheers guys.

I'll only say it once more ... (tonight at least)

The lack of a 4.5 midfielder and so many good options at the 8.5/9 mark means only one thing.

3-5-2. You know it makes sense. You can change to 3-4-3 in a couple of weeks, when we know which 4.5 mid is doing the best and which striker to upgrade a midfielder to.

I used my 4.5 mid last year zero times. Usually had a defender to cover instead and if I couldn't field four healthy mids that is where I would spend my transfer. Just the way I play though, could be wrong.

I suppose theres a few in there your not sure of.
Well, theres a few in there that I'M not even sure of but decided to gamble on Hoilett and Murray from their preseason goals.
As long as Davies starts i wont change the defense, Caulker and Ward rotate well.

Good luck! Keepers are sketchy, and I think Eriksen for sure and likely Lamela will both be better value than Hendo and Siggy, but I really like the rest. I like Hoilett, but do you really see benching any of the others to bring him in? Perhaps for a one or two week injury, but you might be better off putting that .5 into your keepers or defense.

Hoilett rotates with Murray, if Murray keeps his starting place that is.
Am rotating Ward and Caulker the same way.
Caulker isnt popular in here but for 5.0 I cant see any defenders with more goal threat, Huth is only coming back from injury...

Good point on the keepers. If Sunderland arent matching their defensive heroics of last yr I'll prob do Mannone to Begs.
I really like Eriksen and Lamela too but will see how the season pans out a little for Spurs before opting for one of them. Ramsey couldnt be ignored and Mata and Haz have great starts. I think Fab pulling the strings will mean more goals for Hazard too...
Anyway, cheers for the feedback, appreciate it!

Yeah, but they must be pretty organised in defence. Possibly better than Newcastle, who are always a lottery?

Not expecting them a shut out vs Chelsea, but I'm not expecting much from Newcastle at the Etihad either.

Nice team. Not really much to say except that Chambers is very short term, but if you're cool with that then go ahead.

West Brom & Villa are not going to get you many cleanies, I'd try to find and extra 0.5 and have two rotating nailed on 4.5's instead of Chambers & Wisdom/Hutton

Coutinho is an interesting punt. Could work well
