Technical Area

All eyes were on Arsenal’s summer signing Alexis Sanchez as the Gunners squared up to City in Sunday’s Community Shield. Starting on the right flank for Arsene Wenger’s side, the Chilean was afforded 45 minutes of the 3-0 win as he continues to build up his match fitness, although a failure to produce the goods has seen his popularity and ownership levels dip across the Fantasy games as we edge towards next weekend’s deadline.

In our first Technical Area piece of the 2014/15 campaign, we delve into the data from Sunday’s encounter to assess just how Sanchez fared in his first competitive match for his new club.

“sanchez"

As shown by the average position map, Sanchez (number 17) found himself in possession further up the field than Santi Cazorla (19) or Aaron Ramsey (16), the other two players in the Gunners’ attacking midfield three behind Yaya Sanogo (22).

The Chilean may have only featured in the first-half of the 3-0 win but it’s clear how much his team-mates are looking to get the ball to him – Sanchez received a pass every 1.6 minutes which, along with Ramsey, was the quickest of any Arsenal player. Furthermore, his average of 1.1 minutes per touch was, along with Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, joint-top for the Gunners, despite being fielded on the flank.

When we focus on the final third statistics, it’s clear just how prominent the former Barcelona man could become in Arsenal’s attacking forays. Sanchez registered 26 touches in the final third – more than Cazorla (25) despite the latter playing 70 minutes – and also not far behind Ramsey’s 31. In addition, the new boy received more passes (18) than Cazorla’s 17 in this area, with Ramsey registering 21 over 86 minutes on the pitch.

A comparison with City’s David Silva, who managed 49 minutes, is also encouraging. The City man touched the ball every 1.1 minutes, though managed 21 touches in the final third and received 13 passes in this area.

When we assess the distribution, though, there’s clear room for improvement. The Chilean mustered a 60% pass completion rate, with just 15 of his 25 attempts finding their target; compared to the rest of the Gunners midfield starters, Ramsey (81%), Cazorla (85.7%), Mikel Arteta (86.5%) and Wilshere (87.8%), this suggests Sanchez is not yet on the same wavelength as his team-mates or is simply trying for the killer ball too often. It’s perhaps telling, though, that Sanchez’ 79.7% pass accuracy in La Liga last term was the lowest of any Barcelona outfield regular; bearing in mind he accrued 10 assists, this suggests that he’s willing to try a riskier pass more than most players.

Whilst his passing was less than impressive, Sanchez’ trickery out wide posed City plenty of problems – the Chilean’s seven dribbles was second only to Ramsey’s eight and underlines just how often he is willing to take on an opponent.

His overall impact shows he’s yet to settle, though. Sanchez managed just one touch in the penalty box, failed to fire any attempts on goal and produced just a single key pass – those numbers don’t exactly scream out to Fantasy managers but, as the final third stats indicate, Wenger’s side is looking to feed the former Barcelona man as much as possible high up the pitch and once he integrates with his new team-mates, we can surely expect an end product.

Ok, so this is a bit late in the day given that the season starts in a few days and most people have made their decisions with regard to defensive rotations, etc. but I thought I'd post it anyway.

The image I've linked below is of a spreadsheet which is intended to give a VERY crude measure of clean sheet predictability for the season just gone.

Basically it's informed by another sheet in which I've recorded all of the clean sheets each team kept, the venue (home/away),the opponents and the opponent's "value". The "value" is the opponent's final league positions. E.g. Man City in 2013/14 = 1. In other words the lower the value, the tougher the opposition the clean sheets were achieved against.

The front sheet I've shown then summarises this data and averages the value per clean sheet at home, away and in total. I've sorted the table on total average (highest to lowest), which in theory shows the teams who keep clean sheets in the easiest fixtures at the top.

What this shows is that last season Swansea were arguably the easiest team to anticipate a clean sheet for - not only did they keep most of their clean sheets at home, but they were also against weaker opposition generally speaking. The same can also be said for Hull whose home/away ratio was even greater. This would have made Swansea and Hull defenders excellent candidates for rotation last season as you would have caught almost all of the points and benched very few.

At the other end of the scale there are some big hitters. Chelsea being at the bottom is probably to be expected given their much discussed tendancy to 'park the bus' in the big games. Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton also appear near the bottom of the list. This suggests that if you own their defenders you should play them every week - a tactic already employed by most.

Interestingly, West Brom and Sunderland are also near the bottom suggesting their defences sometimes perform when not expected to and vice versa. Given that they also had a near even split of home/away clean sheets they would seem to be poor candidates for rotation by either of the usual theories.

I'm sure other people can read more into this data (if they're so inclined) but those are the first points I drew out.

I'd like to reiterate how crude a measure this is and highlight the obvious point that this is data from last season which is nigh on irrelevant once this season gets going properly and new patterns emerge. If anyone is desperately interested I have this data for every season back to 2009/10 but that's more because I don't get rid of data rather than I think it's useful 🙂

    Anyway - here's the image: http://i.imgur.com/Jihrmw8.png

      *Warning repost*

Hey guys, I've done none of my own research & am incapable of clicking the *Preseason* tab so can you please:

      RMT, again?
(I mean I have changed one midfielder since I last posted it 17 minutes ago but, I had to repost it because it *got lost* on the bottom of the last page)

Tell me who the best £4.5mil mid is?

Provide me with a 2/3/4 & 5-way rotation spread sheet?

Give me a rundown of every starting line-up from the weekend's friendlies & what the sub patterns mean to my team specifically?

Give me an opinion on two equally priced players who by season's end will wind up within 10pts of each other? (Note: Whoever you suggest will be wrong but, thanks for nothing ahead of time.)

Let me know if *I'm crazy* for taking a *punt* on some irrelevant fantasy prospect from a soon to be relegated side?

Oh yeah last thing, & even though I could pull up the ownership %'s on the official FPL site; how many of you are going for that guy, from that team, who's sorta marginal & might pay off but, probably won't, because I want to justify taking him / not taking him from only three people's comments here in the FFS forum?

To begin, I'm not upset, this is just fake football after all...

Oh, & I find satire is a great way to have a laugh about things we'd like to change in this world.

So to answer your question: What *are* people allowed to ask about?

          First, anything they like...
So long as they've done a simple Google search & read the Hot Topics!

The amount of drivel we have to wade through here because sheer laziness is staggering.

For example, they mods received enough negative feedback regarding the crush of RMT posts they moved them to their own thread just so the forum could function again.

Overall, a forum like this works best when everyone contributes however, if the majority of posters are simply looking for *quick fix answers* without doing any work on their own then we have seen just how quickly it all breaks down.

I really think Fab will do well, and can see him starting no.10 early on, which is why I may yet end up throwing him back in there at the expense of you-know-who. Mata is going nowhere though - Swansea are in a state and I think United will batter them before losing to Sunderland week two.

One cheapie is passable but two? No way.

You need Rooney. So maybe Rooney Costa 4.5m if you're going down the cheap third striker spot route.

              Howard > 4.5m
              Shaw > N. Taylor
              Filipe Luis > Terry
              Sanchez > Ramsey
              Ander Herrera > Sigurdsson
              Besic > Mata
              Campbell > 4.5m
              Zarate > Rooney

              Something like that.

                Giving you something like:

                4.5m, 4.0m
                Terry, Lovren, N. Taylor, 4.0m. 4.0m
                Mata, Fabregas, Ramsey, Sterling, Sigurdsson

He won't be a regular starter but he will make regular appearances. He played a part in 30 games last season. And got regular starts towards the end when Mirallas was crocked. I think Martinez likes him.

So he's definitely not one for your first XI because of the cameos, but he could be a good 5m first sub in a 3-5-2 if that's your bag. He will also probably play up front against Leicester in GW1 in Lukaku's absence, which is a nice way to avoid playing Siggy (mun).

      In previous season's he's been:

      1) Forced to play reverse OOP, second fiddle to RVP/Ronaldo/take your pick
      2) More expensive, 11m+
      3) Arguing with Fergie, kicking up a fuss in general, or playing under the incompetent David Moyes

This season, all those problems are gone. LVG loves him and he's had a cracking pre-season. And United have amazing fixtures, and no Europe to worry about...

          Psychic, are you?

There will be no "second fiddle" because they're playing with 2 up top, and Mata behind in the hole.

For several years they've played a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 with Rooney either too deep or stuck out on the left.

    Leicester Injury Update : Official

    ALBRIGHTON
“(We’re) disappointed to pick up a potential injury in terms of Marc Albrighton because I think he’s had a very good pre-season so that’s the only downside.
“It’s groin related but exactly what I don’t know at the moment, we will have to wait and get the scan results.
“We will deal with it – it’s something that happens and I’d rather pick up injuries in games rather than in training so we will have to see how that pans out.”

    Knockaert
“Anthony is not going to be as long as we first thought – it’s still going to be a couple of weeks.

“Jamie VARDY is improving and whether he will be available for next week is, at the moment, a little bit unclear but he’s doing ok - he’s about where we think he should be.

“Matt [UPSON] will have to undergo a bit of surgery so he will be a while yet. "I want someone of his quality to do what we want him to do. He is still a really good signing for us and it is frustrating for the lad more than anything else.

it doesn't seem like hazard will be starting gw1 judging by his preseason minutes. hasn't started a game yet and there is no need for mourinho to rush him considering the depth of chelsea's squad. really want him in but hard to justify for the first few weeks.

I've been pro Fabregas ever since he signed, thinking Hazard looked so tired at the World Cup that he might not start the first few games. But the fact that Haz is on penalties means he'll almost definitely be the one to have eventually. I think you're right in that he may not start GW1. Unless it becomes clear that he definitely will I'm going to go for Fabregas at the start.

i'm the opposite on fabs. just don't see him delivering enough points from the deeper role mourinho has said he will be occupying. hazard is the main man, and id rather have the money to downgrade than struggle to find the 1mil needed to upgrade fabs to haz in a couple of weeks.

    Hi everyone, this is my second shot at RMT, think my team is getting a bit better;

    Begovic - (Myhill)
    Evans - Cahill - Ward - (Wisdom,Bruce)
Ramsey - Fabregas - Eriksen - Mata (El Ahmadi)
    Rooney - Bojan - Costa

Considering downgrading ward to change Eriksen->Sterling, but with Spurs having marginally better fixtures for the first 6 don't know if i should.

    Thoughts and advice, football gurus?

It's amazing what not having a Chelsea defender allows you to do

Does it allow you to worry about not having a Chelsea defender?

Worries me, but then I have a few mil in the bank to upgrade once I know who will play (queue Jose change of defence after me buying one)

I know. I think about that but I figure I'm going to want to use my transfers further up the pitch.

True, I have a few potential moves I can do with the money in the bank, just need to work out where to invest once I know how the teams line up GW1. Although being at the start of the season then they could line up completely differently GW2

Terry for me. we don't really know yet who the bargain defences will be so better to start safe and use the WC later to get them

Lots of teams and no comments in there. And I'm not the only one posting teams so leave the moderating to moderators if you please.

I imagine it'll be the same routine as last season and on Friday morning we'll start publishing our predicted line ups, which will be updated throughout the day as news comes n.

Ramsey is cheaper and he is a better player than Sanchez so there is no real debate
