This evening, we roll out the fourth instalment in our series of Burning Questions articles, focussing on some of the main dilemmas facing Fantasy managers for the season ahead. Having quizzed our contributors on Alexis Sanchez, Defensive Heavy Hitters and Robin van Persie, we now turn our attentions to Liverpool’s frontline as Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for life without Luis Suarez:

Having served up 197 points in 2013/14, Daniel Sturridge has been slapped with an 11.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – the third costliest player available for our 15-man squads. With Suarez now gone to Barcelona, though, Rodgers will be leaning more heavily than ever on Sturridge to deliver but bearing in mind the Reds striker managed only 26 league starts due to injury last season, there are fears the increased schedule, brought on by Champions League duties, may have an impact on his ability to steer clear of injury.

With only a few days remaining until the season gets underway, we ask the Burning Question – Will Daniel Sturridge flourish or flounder without Luis Suarez?

Tom Fenley says…
Liverpool have lost their most creative player after Suarez’s move to Barcelona – given that he scored 31 of his side’s 101 goals and assisted 12 times, that’s a lot to find from the rest of the team. However, Sturridge will now be the focal point of a Rodgers side that will maintain the high pressure, fast breaks and attacking football that suited the England forward so much last season. He scored 22 goals and assisted eight times but played less minutes than Suarez and I think he will still be a consistent points scorer, snapping up a goal almost every game.

I expect him to make up some of the difference from Suarez leaving and see him scoring 25-30% of Liverpool’s goals, gaining lots of bonus points. The issue could be that he will probably only score that one goal each game – he does not often get braces, so while giving him the captaincy should be a safe bet but with a low ceiling. It also seems highly unlikely he will be fit for the entire season. I’m expecting Sturridge to grab at least 20 goals and be in and out of my team due to injury; certainly at 11.5 he is easy to downgrade, though Sturridge is a little expensive and at the level where his value is in the balance, suggesting he will need to be delivering consistently to stay in the frame.

Paul says…
I don’t doubt his goal-getting abilities but for me, the negatives outweigh the positives this season. Sturridge turns 25 on September 1 yet this is his first season as a first-choice forward in a team competing on the European front and his injury record doesn’t bode well. Earlier this summer, he flew home early from the club’s US tour with a hamstring injury and with the fixtures coming thick and fast, Rodgers may try to pre-empt any knocks and niggles by managing his game time more often.

Suarez’ loss cannot be downplayed. Liverpool scored four times in five matches without the Uruguayan last season compared to 97 strikes with him in the first XI – that’s 0.8 goals and 2.9 goals per game respectively. Yes, Sturridge notched all four of those goals in Suarez’ absence but over the course of an entire season, that’s a tough ask of anyone to replicate, never mind someone with Sturridge’s dodgy injury record.

Price is an issue, also. Last term’s exploits have catapulted Sturridge into the premium price bracket this time around and while I wouldn’t have any problem with him at 11.5 alongside Suarez, is he an 11.5-priced player without his former sidekick? I’m not so sure. Impressively, Sturridge’s average of 6.8 ppg last season was the equal of the 12.0-priced Sergio Aguero but if I had to choose one of this injury-prone pair to justify their lofty valuation, my money would be on the man from the Etihad.

D1sable says…
Even with Europe and an onus to stay fit all season (something he has never managed before) its hard to foresee Sturridge failing. The guy is just too selfish and too good at finishing – a perfect blend for us Fantasy Managers. You could argue that although Luis Suarez’ departure harms him in terms of creativity, but it also benefits the England striker as it means he will more regularly take a large share of the bonus points on offer. At 11.5 he has had a significant hike in price and I don’t see him as truly essential; however, handing Sturridge the armband when he plays at Anfield will surely feel warm and fuzzy more often than not.

Applebonkers says…
This one is fairly tricky to assess as whilst games without Luis Suarez in the past two seasons suggested flourish with a capital F, there were only nine of them. It was a small if impressive sample. With Suarez it’s 22 goals and 13 assists in 34 matches, without it’s nine goals and one assist in nine matches. He’ll lose Suarez’s creativity yet at the same time he’ll be a more central figure, with less attacks gobbled up by an often-overwhelming player.

Step to the side for a second though and look back at those two records combined (43 apps, 31 goals, 14 assists). This is Class A Fantasy beefcake; it will take an awful lot for him to suddenly flounder. My only real concern is the addition of European football on a historically fragile body. Likewise, Liverpool bombed out of both domestic cups very early last season. It was an FPL dream; he was at home making Subway commercials whilst Aguero and the rest were flying around Europe. Long story short, Sturridge is still my bet to push the Manchester strikers for the Golden Boot.

7shadesofsmoke says…
The trickiest of questions in my opinion. Daniel Sturridge will really have it up against him as the main man to carry the weight of new expectation in Liverpool’s attack. If we stretch our minds back to the pre-Suarez Liverpool at the start of last season, the Reds were making a habit of sneaking a “Danny Sturridge 1, Opposition 0†scoreline with the emerging Fantasy talent quietly tucking away modest points ahead of Suarez’s unleashing. It wasn’t until his strike partner had returned to wreak havoc on the league’s defences that Sturridge and Liverpool really started scoring Fantasy interest for attacking returns. With European competition to contend with (added injury risk?), the loss of a truly world class strike partner and a bar of expectation set very high for attacking returns, Sturridge will really have his work cut out if he is to top last season’s heroics.

Gavigon says…
As long as Liverpool retain their attacking effectiveness Sturridge will make hay. He didn’t have any trouble when Suarez was suspended, and if anything becomes more of the main man. If he stays fit and, as long as teams haven’t got Liverpool’s attack ‘figured out’, as Chelsea and Newcastle showed right at the end of last year by defending with a wall of eight, he should be in for a huge campaign.

Roscola says…
I think we have to look around the Liverpool team for inspiration on this one. For starters, this almost feels like a make or break season for Philippe Coutinho. Brendan Rodgers will be reliant on the young Brazilian to step up and fill in for their lost playmaker but I don’t know whether he’s got it in him, personally. I also think that Rodgers will be keen to deal with last season’s biggest problem- defence. There were individual failings aplenty but a lot of it was it was down to a somewhat gung-ho approach. That system came so close to winning the title because it played to their strength – Luis Suarez. Without him, I think Rodgers might want to rein in their attacking verve just a little and protect the defence that little bit more. If that did happen, it would be a double-blow for Sturridge’s potential.

Jonty says…
With Luis Suarez now at Barcelona, Sturridge will be the focal point of Liverpool’s attack and the player his team-mates will be most keen to pass to in the box. His talent as a goalscorer is not in question and, in theory, he should benefit in a team where he should hog the opportunities and goals. But with Suarez gone, Liverpool’s attacking powers will be more limited. In addition, Liverpool will have European football and in Rickie Lambert the side has a ready-made replacement for Sturridge when rotation is needed. I think Liverpool as a whole, and therefore Sturridge, will do well this season but I can’t see them scoring the same amount of goals with Champions League fixtures and the loss of one of the World’s best forwards.

Ryan says…
I think Sturridge will flourish. Without Suarez drawing a lot of the play, I think the rest of Liverpool’s key players will step up and take greater responsibility. Sturridge in particular will have a prominent role as he spearheads the attack without his former strike partner. What’s important, however, is that Sturridge won’t be left to do it on his own; Brendan Rodgers has already stated how he wants to see Jordan Henderson get up more often to score goals and if he expects this from a central midfield player, he will certainly expect more from his attacking midfielders. This is a good thing for Sturridge because with others chipping in to help out, the frontman will have the freedom to play his own game and not have to shoulder most of the goal scoring responsibility. I think Sturridge would struggle if he had to carry the team, fortunately for him he will have strong support in attack.

Mark Says…
Sturridge is another one who looked a shoo-in for my initial lineup and then, as the barmy summer passed by, the doubts began to creep in. The 11.5 price tag is the key factor – that’s a big price to pay for any striker, let alone one with fragile limbs. Watching Sturridge play is a rollercoaster for Fantasy managers – he’ll make sure he has plenty of goal attempts but then, at every challenge, his owners are forced to wince and look away. Every time he’s subbed early, you wonder if he’ll make the next match. I can see him scoring 20 goals but then, I can also see the likes of Diego Costa, Romelu Lukaku and even Olivier Giroud running him close for total points given they’ll likely get more pitch time. Alongside that, I have to consider that Brendan Rodgers will look to get more from his midfield – that could see Raheem Sterling and Phillipe Coutinho offer strong value that could ultimately tempt me to overlook Sturridge.

Is anyone else creating a team with a certain degree of flexibility built in?

For example I've been very tempted to go for an uber defence but then if a 5.5 defender like Coleman comes in then it takes a big shuffle to get him, or if I have 4 midfielders 9+ and someone worth 6.5 like Michu comes along but I don't want to get rid of any of my big 4? Or if I go for the big 3 up top in Rooney Costa Sturridge and then Bojan runs wild early doors but I have no way of getting him in?

Seems like a very wordy and pointless post but I think that it's very difficult to put together the perfect team at the beginning and the key to getting off to a good start and building team value is partly your starting team but also jumping on the bandwagons as soon as they become apparent

Every team is flexible if you learn to save transfers so you can do two without a hit.

      I agree about flexibility.

However, attackers take priority, and it is easier to downgrade than upgrade. So I'm going cheap at the back to get more flexibility up front.

A lot of teams on here seem to be swerving Man City's attack, I'm not sure why?

Yaya - Had a monster season, but he is definitely over priced considering he has no consistency since being in the prem, one off? I personally feel Yaya does not turn up (fantasy wise) to big games, I'll definitely squeeze him in with a good run of fixtures and a price drop to maybe low 10's (Not In)

Nasri - Little Consistency over multiple season, and inconsistent during the season. Despite his falling out with Deschamps, I think he was motivated a lot by the world cup which didn't persuade Desch, I don't think he will be as good this season (Not In)

Silva - I know people say how he gets the majority of his points with an in-form Aguero, and I also used to believe this, but if you look at where Silva got his points from last season, Aguero didn't contribute to that many of his assists and vice versa.

I personally am including Silva in my team, anyone else have any thoughts on City's attack?

I was going to include Silva in my team, but it would be at the expense of an Arsenal / Chelsea heavyweight. Something that I have to take into consideration. Plus City usually has a slow start to their season and their opening 2 fixtures aren't the easiest.

Dropping a Chelsea heavyweight wouldn't be wise, but Arsenals fixtures aren't that kind either. I prefer City's first 7 than Arsenals if you think that far in advance because of value changes or transfer saves. But yeah, I do agree City have tough fixtures also.

It's not the same role this season, in the Shield Ramsey had the pivot behind him and played the match almost like a second striker. Fabregas is in the pivot and will have to sprint past his #10 to arrive late in the box to get his goals. He just isn't that player anymore. Ramsey was that player last season and if anything will be given more license to attack this season.

Last season some kind fellow did a ultra cheap defensive rotation article that has good options for 3/4/5 cheapo defenders. Has one been done this season does anybody know?

At the moment in going with 4 cheapso on a 2x2 rotation scheme but wonder if there is a possible 5 way alternative.

        Title
        Subject
        Fantasy rotation
I think I’ve found a 5man rotation up until GW23 that only uses up 1 transfer.
        Possible players: Cameron – Wisdom – O’Shea – Coloccini – Taylor = 22.0m
Stoke – West Brom – Sunderland – Newcastle – Swansea
After GW12 you transfer Stoke to West Ham and it gives the following:

        AST, SUN, wba
        BUR, ast/sou/hul
        CRY, WBA, swa/qpr
        LEI, EVE, sou
        HUL, SOU, qpr/bur
        NEW, BUR, SWA
        STO, NEW, sun/swa
        SWA, LEI, sou/sto
        CRY, LEI, sou
        WHM, lei, cry
        NEW, EVE, wba
        BUR, QPR, lei
        CRY, NEW, whm
        WHM, QPR, bur/wba
        SWA, hul, whm
        AST, WHM, sun
        SUN, LEI, qpr/new/hul
        HUL, AST, MCY/man
        EVE, sto, ast
        BUR, WBA, whm/qpr
        HUL, WHM, swa
        SOU, HUL, eve
        BUR, hul, sou
Only one standout difficult fixture and that is either MCY/man.

There are plenty of 5-ways. They just use teams that we are scared of e.g. Southampton, Hull, Stoke, QPR, Swansea looks very good.

Make a transfer at about 8 for QPR --> Burnley and maybe Southampton --> Spurs.

Stat Attack: Is Sturridge Worth More or Less Post Suarez?

When a world-class player like Suarez departs a team and is not replaced with a player of similar ability former team-mates can suffer or thrive. Despite the departure of Suarez and the price hikes of Sturridge and Sterling this season (Sturridge at 11.5 is now the 3rd most expensive striker in the game) I am surprised that both have the 3rd highest ownership of any player in their position in the FPL game (at the time of writing). Sturridge is being considered one of 'The Holy Trinity' of most popular big hitting strikers (along with Rooney and Costa). As a non-Sturridge owner this got me thinking... in a post-Suarez era is his premium price-tag justified?

    The Story Last Season
Last Season Suarez missed the first 5 games against Premier League opposition while he was serving a suspension for gnashing Ivanovic, he then played almost every minute of the remaining 33 league matches*. In the first 5 Premier League games of last season Liverpool only scored 5 goals a rate of 1.0 goals per game. In the 33 remaining league games Liverpool scored 96 goals at a rate of 2.9 goals per game, this statistic alone should be cause for concern for those considering any big investment in the (less toothy) Anfield attack.

    Individual Player Analysis
When investigating individual goals scored the story is a little less clear cut. Sturridge did score 4 of the five goals (0.8 goals per game) in the five games without Suarez, but in his 25 remaining league games he scored at a rate of 0.7 goals per game. In other words Sturridge scored more goals per-game last season when he wasn't partnered by Suarez. So was Sturridge a bigger goal threat without Suarez? Suddenly that 2.5 price hike seems much more reasonable, or does it? Unfortunately goals per game don't tell the full story.

For those first 5 weeks Sturridge was not substituted once and missed no games through injury, so his 0.8 goals per game also equated to 0.8 goals per 90 minutes. When you calcualte the per 90 minute goals for Sturridge for the rest of the season he actually scored 0.84 goals per 90 minutes when Suarez was on the Pitch. Assuming Sturridge plays every Premier League minute of the season, that equates to a difference of -2 goals per season without Suarez (that's -8 Fantasy Football Points to you and I). Of course with Sturridge's hamstrings, Chapmions League Football and the signing of the formidable Rickie Lambert that is unlikely, therefore it's probably better to work from the minutes played by Sturridge last year (2269). Assuming Sturridge plays that number of games it would equate to a difference of -1 goal for the season (-4 Fantasy Football Points).

Not a huge difference you say (and you'd be right) however the factor that has the biggest potential impact on Sturridge's Fantasy Football point haul this season is the potential reduction in his assists. Last season Sturridge had no assists in the games he played without Suarez, this is not surprising when you consider that he was passing to less accomplished strikers than Suarez in the final third and that Liverpool scored far less goals without Suarez on the pitch. For the remainder of the season Sturridge completed 7 assists in what equated to twenty 90 minute games (0.35 assists per game) an additional 21 Fantasy Football points.

Without Suarez, Sturridge would likely have scored only 172 points last season (not adjusting for loss/gain in bonus points). In order to exceed that total this season Sturridge will have to improve as a player and avoid injury or rotation in a season where there are far more demands on his hamstrings, (at least 6 additional Champions league games this autumn alone). With his high price tag and Liverpool's difficult early fixtures (Man City, Spurs & West Ham away and Everton at home in the first 5 games) I think there are better alternatives to Sturridge for the first few game-weeks.

    Trusted Alternatives
Based on his performance without Suarez, Sturridge's total score would have been comparable to the final tallies of Giroud, Lambert, Lukaku, Bony and Dzeko (+/- 15 points), all of whom are around the 7.5-9.0 price at this stage in the season. Here I examine which of those proven forwards are the best options for the first 5 game-weeks.

    Giroud 8.5 (187pts)
Giroud played more minutes than any of the below to reach his tally of 187 points last season and, with Wenger declaring him lacking match fitness ahead of the Gunners opener against Crystal Palace, is not nailed on. Additionally difficult early fixtures (Palace and Man City at home and Everton Away in the first 5 games) mean it may be prudent to look elsewhere for the beginning of the season.
    Verdict - Gamble

    Lambert 7.5 (179pts)
Lambert also played significantly more minutes than any of the below options to reach his tally of 197 points last season. With questions over his playing time at new club Liverpool and their difficult early fixtures, Lambert does not seem a good investment.
    Verdict - Steer Clear

    Lukaku 9.0 (168pts)
Lukaku played a comparable number of minutes last season to Bony, Sturridge and Dzeko but, like Giroud, is lacking match fitness ahead of Everton's curtain raiser at Leicester. This in combination with Everton's difficult early fixtures (at home to Arsenal, Chelsea and away to Palace in the first 5 games) mean there may better options elsewhere. However it is worth noting that Lukaku has a knack of scoring against stronger opposition and so he may be worth a gamble.
    Verdict - Gamble

    Bony 8.5 (158pts)
Bony had a very successful end to the 2013-14 season, and while Swansea have a few tricky fixtures away in the first few games (at Chelsea and Man United) it remains to be seen whether recent investment in the squad (with Gomis arriving from Ligue 1) will provide better service for him in the coming season.
    Verdict - Gamble

    Dzeko 8.5 (157pts)
Played less minutes than any of the comparable strikers in this list last season but still managed a high points total. With Negredo injured and Aguero lacking match fitness, Dzeko seems assured of a good number of minutes in the first few game-weeks. Man City have a few tricky fixtures (Liverpool at home and Arsenal away) but Dzeko seems by far the best proven centre forward in this price bracket on offer at the moment.
    Verdict - Good Buy

Posting this as I had written this as a community submission yesterday but as I submitted it this article went live! Figured it would fit better here now.

*Suarez was subbed off in the 89th Minute against West Brom, the 92nd Minute against Norwich City, and the 86th minute against Arsenal at Anfield. After Suarez returned from suspension no League goals were scored by Liverpool when he was not on the pitch.

Evans injury has left me with a defensive quandary.

No longer want United defenders due to injuries. Do not want Chelsea due to uncertainty as to who will play. Do not trust Liverpool defense. Debuchy looks good value but is a card magnet. Man City have tough fixures and Kolarov is uncertain to start. Everton horrible fixtures. Tottenham all unfit or rotation risks.

Want a defender from a top team but do not see any value!

I started late last year and had to use a wildcard on my first day; as I didn't get to actually pick my players.

Imagine starting in GW4 with no wildcard... let's just say that this year; it feels good to have all this money. 😛

          Krul/Schmeichel
          Ward / Caulker / Clyne / Cavies / Hutton
          Hendo / Siggy / Mata / Ramsey / Albrighton

Cool, i rather like it, think yours is better, but i came up with:

            Krul - Elliot

Wisdom - PvA - Chambers (placeholder) - Chester - Hutton
            Siggy - Ramsey - Mata - Fabragas - Marney
            X X X

Similar indeed. I like my rotating 4x5.0 defenders quite a bit though and think that the difference between them to having a budget defense and having a stronger 4th mid is greater. I like a lot of the midfielders in the 5.5-7.5 price bracket so I can always shift around there and I think be happy. Or just downgrade one of my strikers to a big hitter anyway. I just think that the defensive stability is more important early doors and will prevent me from having to take an early wildcard.

Yeah good explanation and reasoning behind the defence and WC prevention strategy, lot of good players around teh mid price brackets you mention too.

I'll say this, if you are going with the power three, i will too haha. Sticking to it?

There's a very good reason why they have Rooney and Costa (and not Sturridge) but it doesn't mean it's totally guaranteed that results will pan out the way they should. Even if Sturridge has a good first game, he could struggle through the next few.

Not wrong to go either way, but Rooney/Costa is the safe way to go.

Lots of self doubt about teams and that's fair enough. The real advice won't begin until the season has started.

My advice to all, go with your gut and don't let people talk you into or out of the team you think will get the job done the best.

Realistically there are 20 different team combinations that could all return the same points.

    Sentimental manager, out!
