After examining the beneficiaries of the forthcoming fixture schedule in yesterday’s article, today it’s the turn of the less fortunate sides. A number of last season’s high flyers have testing schedules over the next four to six Gameweeks that could counsel caution over their Fantasy assets.

Man City

“involvement

The champions hammered all comers at the Etihad last season and will be hoping to maintain that form as a couple of title rivals pay visit. With a dressing room full of world-class talent, Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit could well emerge from their upcoming fixture list with a barrel-full of goals and a pocket-full of clean sheets. But history says caution may still be required when faced with (LIV, ars, CHE) in the next four: of those same three fixtures last season, City won one, drew one and lost one, scoring just four goals and conceding in each game.

Anyone eyeing up David Silva after his goal against Newcastle may want to hold fire until easier fodder heaves into view, and a gamble on Sergio Aguero’s nascent fitness seems similarly risky. Likewise, with so much potential for rotation in defence, looking elsewhere may well be the safest option, at least for the time being. Gameweek 6, however, is a different story. A glorious period of fixtures will prove extremely tempting for Fantasy managers and many will doubtless be trying to figure out how to squeeze two or even three pricey Citizens into their squads.

Leicester

“involvement

A well-earned point against Everton signalled a bright start for Nigel Pearson’s side but there are tougher tests to come: the Foxes prepare to face Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United in the next four Gameweeks. Liam Moore got the nod to provide Fantasy managers with a precious 4.0 budget starter in defence, but few owners will be keen to start him over this schedule. Chris Wood came off the bench to grab a goal but is unlikely to tempt much investment, though Leonardo Ulloa was on a few radars following a successful campaign with Brighton. These fixtures suggest monitoring the Argentine and his strike partner, David Nugent, before investing, however. The Foxes’ schedule does clear markedly from Gameweek 7, an ideal time to invest if any of their players manage to impress in the interim period.

Aston Villa

“involvement

Touted for relegation by no fewer than nine of the scouts in our season’s predictions, Paul Lambert steered the Villains to a narrow victory over Stoke. The next two fixtures – home ties with Newcastle and Hull – look winnable too. Following that the Midlands club will need to batten down the hatches as they face a hurricane of title-chasing opponents in the shape of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and City. Of course, after last season’s disappointments, few Villa players are gracing Fantasy Watchlists, let alone our squads, but the 4.0-priced Alan Hutton’s clean sheet in the opening Gameweek has caught the eye of some. Anyone holding him can make hay while the sun shines on the next two fixtures but clean sheets look improbable in the subsequent five.

BE WARY OF

Everton
Their winless record in pre-season was carried over into the opener as the Toffees struggled to close out a valiant Leicester. Such insipid form does not bode well considering the step up in quality of their upcoming opponents – encounters against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United in the next six Gameweeks suggest that Roberto Martinez will have his work cut out to ensure a favourable start to the league season, particularly with Europa league commitments to fulfil.

Last season’s hugely successful campaign has had the inevitable effect on the prices of the Everton defence, with even youngster John Stones being elevated to the upper mid-price bracket. With such hard-hitting adversaries on the agenda, investment looks too pricy for most. Aidan McGeady and Steven Naismith, on the other hand, seem very kindly priced and may be ready to step up this season, particularly with the expected long-term injury to Ross Barkley. However, even their most ardent suitors would surely admit that they’re likely to struggle for points in the short term. It looks wise to use the forthcoming fixtures to weigh up their likely pitch time before committing.

West Ham
A match of two cards eventually resulted in a loss for Sam Allardyce as his side were finally undone in stoppage time by Spurs. Traditionally, the Hammers’ appeal to Fantasy managers is limited to their hardy and well priced defence but Allardyce’s forays into the transfer market have so far suggested an increased focus on attacking prowess. Enner Valencia, Mauro Zarate, and Diafra Sakho are all hoping to announce themselves in the Premier League – the former catching some Fantasy eyes after a decent showing at the World Cup. But with a middling set of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks, including Liverpool and Man United and – crucially – only one truly tempting home game (QPR), points potential at either end of the pitch looks limited. Again, Fantasy managers are advised to use these fixtures for reconnaissance before the weather turns clement for the Hammers around Gameweek 7.

Liverpool
The win over Southampton was hardly convincing, as Liverpool attempt to come to terms with life without Luis Suarez. They may need to get up to speed more quickly if they are to start the season with much needed momentum, which won’t be helped by their next two fixtures against Man City and Tottenham. Investment in double-digit scorer Raheem Sterling has been strong this week but he will tested against those opponents, as will Daniel Sturridge. Brendan Rodgers’ defence picked up where it left off last season – conceding – and as such look unlikely to shut out City and Spurs, meaning the heavily backed Dejan Lovren may need to rely on his goal-scoring prowess to atone for a lack of clean sheets. However, the skies clear markedly from Gameweek 4 as the Reds embark upon a far stronger schedule.

Is the cheap midfield category now a dead zone for fantasy?

Seems that with all the big hitting midfielders this season that there is no room for punts on cheaper players. Siggi has taken the fourth spot which is traditionally made up of a 5-7.5 mid, and its looking like his spot for the season.
The fifth spot reserved for a bench player appears to have very little of interest

Looks like 9 9 9 Siggi 4.5. Is here to stay. Will be very difficult for any of the other midfielders in the game to make a claim for a spot

Normally decent options like Snodgrass Mirallas Puncheon Walters Nolan. Etc etc. are just not going to be options this season as Siggi looks way above any of them

I still have my reservations as well...we need to remember that Siggy benefited greatly from Michu that high scoring season. Can Siggy replicate his productivity with Ki and the rest stepping up? Not so sure it will suffice...although I'm willing to gamble on it for the moment due to his price.

      Replace your 4.5 mid with a 9

    Jovetic young chambers naughton etc

Now ppl have to sell them just after 1 week or risk price drop/sub appearance

Never get in non starters and think of transferring them out becos by tt time there will have other pressing transfers to make which results in having to take hits

Well, Twin Peaks is hugely overrated but i've just bought The Entire Mystery on Blu Ray to upgrade from The Gold Edition. The problem is: it costs way too much and the quality lasts only for about 13 episodes(the 8 episodes of the first season plus the first 4 or 5 of the second season).

Deadwood is ten times better but the Blu Rays are available only in America and Germany if i'm correct.

The Wire's Complete box set is always the first choice.

The cultural relevance and "historical" importance of Twin Peaks is not in doubt but after David Lynch left the boat(since we're talking about boats) everything fell apart. I don't really see how TP affected the birth of Deadwood and especially The Wire, which owes its life to Homicide: Life on the Street and the experiences that David Simon had as a producer/writer on that series.

TP kinda opened the door for that cinematic level of television with long story arcs. Shows like The Wire with story lines that take seasons to conclude really owe a lot to it. Maybe not directly, but indirectly at least. It was a pretty radical show at the time in a lot of ways.

Don't think everything fell apart in season 2 either, you just learn what scenes/arcs/ characters as a whole to fast forward through after you've watched through it a couple times =P

That first season is absolute perfection imo.

If we want to talk about stories that take seasons to conclude, well then The Wire owes much more to The X-Files rather than Twin Peaks. Actually, every series owes something to The X-Files, which is the quintessential cult TV-Series. Season 2 is pretty bad from episode 7 or 8 onward, Mark Frost was forced from ABC to do everything Lynch didn't want to do, mainly revealing Laura's killer, but other things too.

Twin Peaks really thought television how to use setting, memorable locations and particularly small towns.

Anyway, i bought the two box sets because i have all the best tv-series ever, the most important ones and all of my favourites on Dvd or Blu ray; i love physical copies.

Nice when we do get a bit of a change of scenery. You see some cracking sunrises but as you can imagine, spending a lot of time out here can make them seem like the norm. I'm actually quite a big reader. I usually just use the tv for the football and news. One of these box sets will probably take me some time to watch. When your sitting up here for 18 hours a day there's still time for a bit of a box set 🙂

That's my crew just finished for tonight so I better head down to my bed. 4am start again!

That would be my guess for this weekend, though Koeman may go back to 4-3-3 of pre-season.

After this weekend, it's harder to predict. Koeman wants a winger and Gaston and Taider will be sniffing around too.

Taider played and scored as a 10 for the U21s in midweek. He'll compete with JWP and Davis for the advanced midfield role IMO.

Ramirez will be an impact sub again.

I think Tadic is the only Saints midfielder worth owning - but I think JWP will play on Saturday.

As a Hazard owner, I certainly feel your Hazard/Fabregas pain this week. For what it's worth, I have spent a lot of time looking at the underlying stats from the game against Burnley and I can assure you that there are many positive things we can take away from his performance.

      STATS

Apart from 9 succesful dribbles (Costa/Fabregas had 3), he also had the same number of touches in the penalty box as Diego Costa (5) and the most succesful passes in the final third (29, compared to 15 by Fabregas). The downside is that in terms of goal threat, he had exactly the same number of attempts on goal as Fabregas (0).

      PENALTY

At the moment, we assume that Hazard will continue to take penalties for Chelsea; In the game against Burnley, Chelsea had a penalty unfairly disallowed. Assuming he is still on penalties/took the penalty succesfully, he'd have had enough points for the Hazard/Fabregas debate to have never come into question.

      ARMBAND

I think that the underlying stats are more than enough to make him a worth candidate for the armband this week. In terms of goal threat, only Schürrle, Diego Costa and Ivanovic looked more dangerous - and they all got one! I own Diego Costa, but I am still going to go with Hazard (C) - as the number of people getting excited about Fabregas can only help me gain rank (as a decent little captain differential).

      DISCLAIMER

If it turns out that Hazard has lost penalty duties to someone else, I'd be all over Fabregas like a cheap suit. I think there is a strong argument for owning both, but that's difficult whilst carrying Costa and Chelsea defender (which is more important IMO). As soon as Aguero gets more than 30 minutes, I may consider Costa --> Aguero, in order to bring Fabgregas in as well.

I think it's hard to captain fab as a deep midfielder.

Hazard C makes sense, but I think he has to relearn how to play in this team. He is playing the Ronaldo winger role, holding it up, looking for the killer pass or highlight reel shot and he needs to be more like robben, receive, dribble inside, shoot hard, repeat.

So, Mata is going down? I'm all for sticking with him, especially since I've used my FT on Lamela -> Siggy. But it's frustrating to lose 0.1m (which effectively means 0.5m early on) right now.

What do you reckon are the chances for a productive GW for Mata?

Is it just plain stupid to waste 4 points on bringing in Sterling, Tadic or someone else?

    Have we all underestimated Swansea?

They were fairly poor last season, however its possible to lay much of the blame for that on the europa cup and a change of manager.
Then their pre season was poor, although as the manager himself said they were just using it to trial new ideas and get the players fit. Not trying to win meaningless matches

The manager has been described as clueless by many on here, but he formulated a good strategy to beat utd. They have lost a few. Players but have also added a few quality ones. Siggi Gomez and the new centreback.
Without the euro league to worry about and a good start they could be worthy of fantasy investment, especially with the kind run of fixtures

Currently own Taylor and Siggi, contemplating Jovetic to Bony

Van Persie returning is only good news for owners of Mata. Whilst Rooney is a top class striker and no one doubts his abilities, having RVP up top alongside him is going to greatly enhance both Rooney and Mata's opportunities to assist as well as score goals.

If I had Mata I'd be clinging on for dear life!!

As a non Mata owner, I agree. Far better for him to have RVP to supply or to feed off. Mata RVP Rooney will all score more if all 3 are in the side than if any of them are out. Class players opperate on a similar wavelength. Take one out for a lesser player and the attack as a whole suffers.

6.0 is too much imo. 5.5 is suitable price. regular defenders for MU all have 5.5 price tag.
