With attention understandably focused on Manchester United’s impending record signing of Angel Di Maria, the capture of fellow Argentine Marcos Rojo for Β£16 million has taken a back seat. Nevertheless, the club’s third summer recruit could be a crucial piece of the jigsaw – manager Louis van Gaal sees the 24-year-old as integral to his plans and has waxed lyrical over the defender’s versatility:

β€œMarcos is very gifted. He has played at the highest level in world football and can play either as a central defender or left-back. He has ability, physical strength and a willingness to learn that means he has a very bright future ahead of him. He had a very strong World Cup and has been playing in Europe for a couple of years now. He is a very good addition to the team.”

THE HISTORY

Recruited by his local side Estudiantes de La Plata at just ten years of age, Rojo signed his first professional contract in 2009. Promoted to the first team, he was employed predominantly as a left-back and managed 53 appearances in three years, scoring four times and helping his club win the Copa Libertadores and Argentine Primera Division.

Despite signing a five-year deal with Spartak Moscow in December 2010, Rojo made a total of 17 appearances and delivered a single goal and assist in a forgettable spell before moving to Sporting Lisbon for Β£3.5 million in July 2012. His first year with the club was disastrous; rash tackling, positional naivety and temper tantrums contributed directly to the side’s worst season in their existence.

Last year the side enjoyed a rebirth, though, and Rojo began to impress Europe’s top scouts. Lisbon secured Champions League football by finishing second, utilising him as centre-half in a backline that conceded just 12 goals in 29 games. Rojo proved to be a decent goal threat from the back and scored seven times in 61 outings for the Portuguese outfit, though it’s fair to say his disciplinary record leaves something to be desired and may deter some Fantasy suitors – he picked up 23 yellows and was dismissed on five occasions during his time with Sporting.

On the international stage, Rojo made his debut for Argentina back in February 2011 and has subsequently represented his country on 28 occasions, finding the net once.

THE PROSPECTS

Although he stands six foot one and is adept at centre-half, Rojo built his reputation as a pacey attacking full-back, with excellent close control and the ability to beat an opponent before rifling in pinpoint crosses. While most expect Luke Shaw – when fully fit – to take up the role on the left, whether in a 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 formation, Rojo is certainly adept in the positionΒ and offers a definite alternative if Van Gaal chooses to overlook the youngster. In the recent World Cup, for example, he executed the most key passes and the second-most crosses of any defender in the tournament.

In terms of pitch time, Van Gaal’s statement above looks key. Rojo is versatile enough to offer United the chance to switch tactics during matches, moving from the heart of a back-three to left-back in a four-man back-line (or vice versa) and perhaps gives him an advantage over his defensive team-mates in terms of security.

Given the club’s current injury woes, it seems we won’t have a clear picture of Van Gaal’s intentions until he has a fully-fit squad to choose from, though even if Shaw edges ahead for the position on the left, Rojo’s installation will afford United a much-needed injection of pace through the middle.

Available for 6.0 in FPL, Rojo is the Red Devils’ most expensive defensive option after Shaw suffered a drop to 5.9 but it’s something of an understatement to suggest his new side have done little to vindicate our investment to date. With United conceding three goals in their opening two fixtures, few will be willing to risk so much until the Old Trafford outfit begin to show some signs of solidity. Once his work permit comes through, Rojo looks a definite starter and has some very strong fixtures in the upcoming six (bur, QPR, lei, WHM, EVE, wba), though, as we’ve seen so far, whether Van Gaal’s side have the form to take advantage is another matter entirely.

  1. How the new pricing system May affect the game

Price rises mean the template team is a certainty.

Players are dropping in value as they did last year but hardly anyone is rising in price, even when their ownership goes up 5 fold.

Look at any team. You will see lots of players with drops in value and often only 1 or 2 with a rise in value. Spurs for example – 9 players have dropped in value and only one has risen.

These changes have made the game worse and shifted the balance of power from the interested player to the casual player. Some people have said its good cos it reduces volatility in the prices but its navigating the price rises that make FPL interesting and a genuine challenge. It prohibits simply copying the crowd and encourages individual thinking and anticipation.

Price rises reward those who watch out for changes in tactics, upcoming good fixtures and the impact on a team of new signings. In other words people who predict and anticipate. They act as a barrier to those who just react, who apply a wait and see approach. Smaller price rises mean those who put in the effort aren’t rewarded and will ultimately lead to people acquiring a template team quicker. Just look at how template the teams have become already after just 2 game weeks. The new system makes it easy to simply follow the herd. Theres no longer a barrier to getting certain players in. If you miss the boat early, just get the player a week or two later – they wont be that much more expensive.

For example, last year I was one of many who didn’t get on the Toure or Ramsey bandwagons. By the time I realised that they weren’t flash in the pans I had to significantly change my team when I decided I had to jump on board cos both had risen significantly. This is a good thing. Why should it be easy for me to correct my mistakes and lack of judgement? Some people didn’t get them at all cos they missed the boat. If the system for calculating price rises being used this year applied last year then neithers rises would have been prohibitive and I could have taken them with little cost to myself. We all would have had the same team very early on.

And this year, we have seen huge numbers of transfers for Siggy yet he has only risen by £0.3m. Siggy started the season with ownership of about 7 percent. We are in GW3 and already a third of the people have him. More importantly, almost every “serious” player now has him. No one has “missed the boat” cos the boat hasn’t sailed. Hes still only 0.3m! Those who had him from the start haven’t been rewarded.

I say do away with price changes altogether. They complicate transfer decisions. Good post.

Got to disagree. Price rises are what make this game. No price rises will mean that players like Siggy who were underpriced by the powers that be will end up in every team. I reckon he will be this years Michu. Those who had him in GW1 currently get little reward for realising this and being ahead of the game. With no prices this would even worse.

Price rises are a barrier to those who aren't quick to spot trends.

Aren't the points he scored for you the reward? I can never give back Ashley Young's returns the first two weeks so you won that duel. The game is as much about the 2-3 week windows as it is about a player becoming a season keeper for you.

Siggy would be 6.5 at this point last year, edging close to a 6.6.

Dier would be 5.5 pretty easily too.

      Giroud would certainly be 8.2

I agree. Now we are not getting forced to make early transfers which gives us more time to judge a player and make better decisions instead of casual players who would jump straight away without looking at fixtures/form.
There is always a way to get ahead of the casual players. The real competition will be between the serious players by Christmas time again

I disagree. They can prevent people who missed the wagon in the first place from getting on board. You no longer have to tear up your team to fit players in.

Siggy being a good example. He is going to be massively underpriced through the entire season. That's shite.

It's early days. Templates emerge early because fewer players have scored well. Give it time and one or two other players will begin to emerge while some early bandwagons will lose their wheels.

      I don't agree with this.

I think more volatile prices reward knee jerking and those who just buys the players who did well last week.

In this situation you can gamble on somebody like De Jong at this stage, while with the old system in this situation you'd be an idiot to not jump on the Sigurdsson wagon. That created very very similar teams among the active an interested players, and eventually those are the ones you need to beat and want to play in your own style.

In your example from last season you were badly punished for NOT following the herd, to make a long story short.

Agree with this. Besides, casual bandwagoners, while they will jump on the Siggys of the world, they'll also jump on the Cattermoles. A good player should always beat a casual player, regardless of the stock market effect.

I take your point and agree to a certain extent. But last year I didn't recognise how good a season Toure and Ramsey were going to have till it was too late. I was prevented from taking them on board cos to get them id have had to rip my team apart cos they rose in value so quickly.

I missed the boat and it was my own fault. I was punished for not being smart.

I see what you are saying, this may have prevented teams becoming to template. But you only have to look at this season and see that we already have a template that is achievable by anyone.

Not sure I agree with your disagreement πŸ˜‰

The fact is, in the past the serious manager was able to use price changes to accumulate massive team wealth. The casual wasn't so interested in this as they didn't follow Fiso and TotalFPL so religiously. As a result the casual might get to a TV of 105m while the serious manager will get to a TV of 115m, thats a huge disadvantage to the casual.

Why is it a bad thing that players who don't spend 12 hrs a day on the game have a chance? It's a game, not too be taken so seriously, which is meant to appeal to a wide range audience as possible. You need to lighten up.

I spent pre-season debating Siggy vs Bojan and went for Bojan. This week I was considering bringing Siggy in but would've needed a hit and a 4.0 def so didn't, as I intend to keep my current big 4 midfielders while fit. At £6m I could've still done it that first week before any rises but it would've required an 8pt hit then.

That means I still don't have him, but as you say he's still only £6.3m. He could go to £6.5m and I could still decide to take that hit to bring him in if the wagon shows no sign of slowing, particularly with my wildcard still available.

Ramsey last year I just got on in time, but stubbornly opted against both Suarez and Yaya and before long both those were out of my range. This year I feel I have more time to wait and see with rising players.

In contrast, players are dropping a lot more regularly as you point out, which has made me quick to switch those who're falling in price - particularly the cheap players, as it's very tough to make a straight swap when a £4.5m def drops to £4.4m (as an example). I took the drop with Mata as I was determined to keep him anyway, and a drop to £8.9m still leaves many options for a straight swap with a single transfer. Bojan I moved on as a drop to £5.4m has a lot more impact at that low end of the scale with limited options.

Mark complained about this in an article two years ago when everyone jumped on what he thought was his Michu bandwagon, I think. He wanted full price if he were to sell since he wasn't profiting as much as he could and latecomers were able to get him at a higher selling price.

Price changes are not as important as getting that first points haul or two when other are still undecided. As I posted above, the points are the reward, the pounds just make it a bit easier to get there.

Don't believe you should get full price. There should be a consequence for ditching a player - the cost of getting him back in again if you realised that you made a mistake. Otherwise we can correct all of our mistakes.

I think the exact opposite is true. It comes down to playstyle...you like to play the market, I like to play with stats.

How many people on here lamented last year that Ramsey and Toure were the casuals choice? Bought by many casuals simply to net the extra £££. They lucked out, these players just happened to be the real deal.

Taking this year: After GW1 Fabregas, Siggy and Ramsey were on the rise because the masses were chasing points and team value. The smart players were backing Hazard (his at home record is great) and Jovetic (great stats), even if they didn't have them...look at the scout picks.

The slower prices rises allows more cautious players to play the game better. It allows us to 'wait and see': There is not nearly enough evidence to say that Hazard/Mata won't be better than Fabregas in the long run, yet knee-jerkers and casuals force us to make that decision after only 1 or 2 matches...for fear of losing 0.6 million should fabregas win this contest.

I prefer it this way, although for balance I think price drops could have been similarly affected.

Firstly, playing stats and the market are not mutually exclusive playing styles. The market represents an additional way to gain an advantage over other players. Be that accumulating team value or simply gambling and making an early transfer so that you aren't caught out by a rise or fall.

Secondly, waiting and seeing is not always the best tactic and isn't necessarily one only the best players always adhere to. At what point does "waiting and seeing" stop and become a "knee-jerk" transfer? Sooner or later you'll have to change a player that you've been waiting on, if they don't score any points. If the price hasn't changed then you can do this easily, essentially removing all risk from waiting on players.

A volatile market makes it harder to wait. You have to judge the pay off compared to the loss you may suffer if it doesn't work. Equally if you make lots of knee jerk transfers you're risking 4 points (not to the mention the transfer out of another player) of your score in return for a form player and a potential price rise or dodge of a fall. If your knee jerk doesn't pay off you have to take more hits. Neither strategy is a guarantee and neither is better or more educated than the other. Casuals are casuals and don't care either way. A more volatile market makes the game far more interesting and requires far more attention.

Cautious players who wait (on players like Mata/Haz):
Best Case: You get points for keeping, but lose TV. Win-Lose
Worst Case: No points and no TV. Lose-Lose

Aggressive hit takers (who follow the market):
Best Case: You get points and TV. Win-Win
Worst Case: No points and TV. Lose-Win

Fast price rises punish one group less than the other.
Obviously being in the former group, I prefer it one way over the other πŸ™‚

Let's say Mata outscores Fab over the next 2 weeks.

Easy for the Fab bangwagon to hop onto the now 8.9 Mata and pocket the profits.
Harder for the Mata holders to upgrade to Fab.

            Aside:
I do enjoy having to adapt to the changes each season.
That more than anything seperates the casuals from the tryhards imo πŸ™‚

That's fair enough I guess! Ultimately it's always a combination of both strategies anyway. Number of hits has to be managed, while a dead team will not win anything!

Whatever the thresholds for rises/falls eventually settles at...the most important thing is transparency...fpl needs to explain the way it will work and allow totalfpl and fiso to do their thing. FPL is an educated guessing game...templates do form but there's still so many variables that come into play...not allowing people to definitively know when a players price will rise or fall is a huge mistake imo. eg. My first season was my worst by far because I hadn't found out about totalfpl and fiso.

I am likely in the minority here, but I disagree with this. Being able to judge rises and falls via third party sites has certainly been massively useful over the years, but I have rather enjoyed the last few days where nobody has had this information handed to them on a plate. Makes for a more interesting game, and it's still entirely possible to have a rough guess at what's going to happen to the prices based on transfers in/out

With RVP back and potentially on penalties, I think Rooney OUT is not a controversial move despite the sumptuous fixture list. I may show 1 more week of patience (I have Rooney + A. Young, not Rooney + Mata) since it is at newly promoted Burnley, but again not bad either way if the rest of the team looks good to you. I have Dzeko so may need to monitor that closely.

It's their defence that's so bad. They'll score goals - with a full team out.

This. Rooney and Mata are quality, and capable of scoring in open play or from set pieces against anyone. Granted, the rest of the team is toilet, but I'm keeping attacking assets for the next three games.

United ain't scoring many goals and not creating much chances either. They could struggle against Burnley again and there is no guarantee they will improve seeing tonight's performance even though it is a B team.

    £37m Mata
    £30m Shaw
    £28m Fellaini
    £28m Herrera
    £20m Rojo

    Ramsey - Lamela - Tadic - Chadli - Siggy

...Should I trust Spurs? I trust Pochettino, and even though they won't be playing QPR every week, they'll still likely play with 3 "Lallana-upgrades" in Lamela, Eriksen and Chadli acting as 3 playmakers..

I'm not so sure about Chadli and Tadic looks full of potential but could turn out to be another Coutinho.

Watch how they do this gameweek and then think about them imo

Yep, thinking about this for next week πŸ™‚ will be watching Chadli's position and runs very closely.. Could be another "this year's Ramsey" along with Siggy..

Forget Chadli. Spurs haven't even played decent opposition yet! Big mistake.
