Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

Yeah a lot did...He should be a 9.0 player. He does all the things needed including picking up hefty FPL pts. If he has a bad run for the first four weeks he'll be close to 7.5....but he absolutely will pick up pts soon...and a lot of them.

      • 12 Years

To be fair, he should be 7.9 already given the ease with which other players have been dropping it seems he's unlucky to still be at 8.0 after a couple of blanks.

Did I see it...?...Not a fan of Dzeko..he's one of those players who always looks like he'll deliver but somehow we always manage to miss his pts...14 goals and 14 assists every season but I bet we only ever pick him for a quarter of them, somehow.

To my understanding Bruce will not start, and I'm stuck with deciding who to play instead. Wisdom will almost certainly not get a CS, Wanyama is Wanyama lol, and Bojan won't be playing / is not made for BPL anyway. Alas, i was hoping to last longer before having to take any minus points. Leave it be and just play Wanyama? or take the hit and bring in the likes of Sigurdson? Help would be nice I'm crashing and wanna head off to sleep, cheers in advance guys

    Begovic
    Cahill Jones Dummet Bruce (Wisdom)
    Mata Fabregas Sterling Ramsey (Wanyama)
    Rooney Jovetic (Bojan)

rumours around last night that he would...either way kun should score no matter how much he plays...rvp is woefully out of form and not match fit, so its a bigger risk...kun is a beast

This is why I'm dumping Costa:

          1) Given his history of recurrent muscle injuries, Chelsea will be cautious with his recovery. And 3 weeks is preferrable to 3 days.
          2) If he's not fit to start, then he's definitely not coming off the bench. This is a convenient excuse to shirk international duty, as well.
          3) Assuming 1/2, this will trigger a casual sell-off, and I don't want to be forced to make a transfer early in the international break.
          4) Aside from his 2 poached goals, Costa has been underwhelming thus far. And Chelsea's schedule isn't getting any easier.
          5) I have the luxury of 2 FT and a solid squad
          6) I can always buy him back with my wildcard if I'm wrong 🙂

Having said all that, I can all but guarantee that Costa will start and score a brace. And Dzeko will get sent off in a 10 minute cameo. You've been warned!

I don't think we have a large enough sample of information to go off of there.

Yes true, Sanchez is a dif striker than him. He runs in behind, while Giroud holds the ball and Ramsey makes runs behind

what you say is true but sanchez goes wide, comes deep to collect the ball, attracting defenders and leaving space in the middle of the park for ramsey to flourish....sanchez's ability to run in behind will not stop ramsey from making those runs, but will merely facilitate them...sanchez is also very creative, always looking for a teammate, and ramsey is someone who makes great runs...match made in heaven...

Interesting, when they played together against Everton they didn't look amazing, but they may need time to settle together

I guess we'll have to wait and see

Only true if you assume that Alexis can´t handle the narrow skill-set that Giroud was trusted with...

Who is definitely playing wc for gw4?

If I intend to play, might as well use up my 1FT right?

When is the best time to wc during the int break, once you can? So you get the players you want to prevent a rise in value and then evaluate as we go along?

Activate straight away if you're going to use it. Bring in all the players you think will rise 0.2 or more then ditch them for the team you want at the end

Arsenal might be fatigued from their Champs qualifier midweek.

Looking like its going to set up well for a WC next week

                -International Break
                -Aguero likely to back starting
                -Sanchez playing up front
-De Jong, Balloteli Di Maria all on view this week
-Clear out the crap in my team
                -Liverpools kind run of fixtures

I know. Usually to clear the crap and catch price rises on the international break. I was kinda hoping I wouldnt need to use it this year but theres a few more reasons to WC now

Theres always that and not a bad idea if your team is doing okay now. For me, I never really needed the WC later so was glad I used it early last year as my really turned my team around. Afterwards i could plan pretty well in advance for the DGWs.

Am I crazy for keeping both Dzeko and Costa?

I don't like chasing last week's points by picking up Jovetic or Adebayor who both scored braces last weekend. I'd be more tempted to get Bony into my team.

Maybe take Dzeko out as Aguero is back (but it's anyones guess who will be dropped from Jov and Dzeko) Leave Costa and be smart 😀
