Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

I want to captain Rooney but the early game curse has always plagued me. That being said my other option would be Ramsey who I have never given the armband to. I don’t know what to do I am going to literally flip a coin to decide.

    Krul/Elliot
    Ivan + SOT + PVA + 2 of Wisdom/Hutton/Dummett/Duff/Moore
    3 or 4 of Haz/Fab/Sanchez/Mata/Silva/Rambo/Sterling/Lamela/Schurlle Siggy

this is very true. the number of mids/fwds seems more this year, and the reason why is because the league is more competitive than ever.

even teams around 5th-8th have some class players

        Krul Mannone

        Dummett Taylor Clyne Hutton Wisodom

        SIGGY Ramsey Cesc DiMaria Sterling

        Adebayor Rooney Jovetic

Di Maria and 0.4 in the bank with three 4.0\4.1 budget defenders will not give me much flexibility in the team ? if I play with Mata and upgrade Dummett and Taylor to Colo and Williams and I can get Lamela\Eriksen or De Jong at any time instead of Mata, what do you think ?

that captain choice this weekend... Jovetic seems unlikely to snag another huge haul, rooney is in a poor united side, ramsey is away from home and hazard is up against a resolute everton defense... the struggle is real!

I probably should've made the FT's after I asked you guys, but:

    De Gea (Myhill)
    Clyne Debuchy Coloccini (O'Shea, Wisdom)
    Sigurdsson Mata Sterling Silva Eriksen
    Rooney Costa (Zamora)

0.7m in the bank, no FT's.
As far as I know Costa's healthy.
For my FT's I did Filipe Luis > Clyne, and Chambers > Coloccini.
I did Luis because, well, price was dropping quickly and for 2 GW didn't give any points. For Chambers, I feel dumb because I shouldnt've wasted that FT.

    So, Thoughts?

I would normally say Rooney but with RvP, Di Maria and Mata in the lineup it could hinder him. On the otherhand, Ramsey's form has been good but relying on a midfielder can be tough.

Exactly. Tap-ins are worth the same as an absolute cracker, and in a way it's probably a better sign that he is scoring those close range ones, at least he is getting into great forward positions regularly.

    Captain: Ramsey

    0.6 ITB

Looking beyond this weekend, i'm still unsure whether I should replace Williams with either Lovren or Kaboul/Rose

Caulker to 4.5 gives you 1.1. This makes Tadic into Sterling

        unfortunately i'm 0.1 off. i'd have to find a 4.4 defender

Oh, forgot the Caulker drop sorry. Still Caulker to a 4.5 is a good move. QPR have an awful defence and will prob concede the most goals this year

Caulker to Hutton/ Wisdom is fine

          i could do -

          Aguero > Sturridge

          Tadic > Sterling

          ?

Making Tadic to Sterling is important. Caulker to a 4.0

        great suggestion.

i downgraded Williams > Naylor to make it happen. I can move Caulker after this gameweek if he and QPR are still looking shaky

Free. Costa –> Aguero and likely Mata –> de Jong to fund it (not totally decided on that though)

        Na, Kolarov(c)

Man Utd in general look absolutely woeful and I have Rooney, so he looks like the best way to fund it.

I would love to do that, but just how many minutes will he get? and how long before he gets injured again? too many question marks for me...

I just have a feeling that his injury record will put a lot of people off him, while he continues to play week-in-week-out banging them in for fun. Just a gut feeling, really, and more for longer term than this week alone.

At least between him and Dzeko I should get at least 90 mins 😆

Hey guys, first post of the season for me, hope you've all got off to good starts.

Tricky one this week, I'm fairly happy with my team but have 2 FTs so feel like I need to play one...

    Krul
    Jones, Debuchy, Taylor
    Ramsey, Mata, Eriksen, Siggy
    Rooney, Costa, Ings
    Bench: Bego, Figueroa, Arnautovic, Duff

    What would you guys do?

Arnie looks surplus to requirements, so either hack him down to a cheapo to free cash, or punt on Chadli
