Crystal Palace secured their fifth signing of the summer last week by re-acquiring fans’ favourite Wilfried Zaha on loan from Man United. The deal seems to have already galvanised a squad whose chances of remaining in the Premier League looked bleak after the shock departure of Tony Pulis in pre-season. Zaha made an instant impact last weekend, coming on as a substitute to score a crucial goal in the 3-3 draw with Newcastle, and he hopes to build on his strong start in the coming weeks:

“I had to make the move here because I wasn’t getting minutes on the pitch, so coming back here will definitely push my career forward. Since I came back, I’ve been comfortable and everyone has shown me love around the place. All I need to do is get settled again and get playing. It’s always great to play and I feel at home doing that here with players I’ve played with before. I haven’t really played too much, so coming off the bench I don’t mind because I’m getting my fitness back. But I’m definitely looking forward to starting a few games.”

Another old face is replacement manager Neil Warnock, who has backed the 21-year-old despite enduring an unsuccessful spell at Manchester United:

“Maybe at that top level they wonder if they can rely on him, but he just needs to be given that bit of freedom. I’ve heard one or two say his attitude is not so good, but for me, it’s fantastic. He was so keen [to come here].”

THE HISTORY

A product of the Palace youth system, Zaha became integral to their push for promotion to the Premier League in spite of his young age. After graduating from the academy to the first team in 2010 aged just 17, he enjoyed three successful seasons with the Eagles, racking up 110 appearances and 12 goals.

By the pre-season of 2010/11, Zaha had already established himself as a starter but scored just one goal that year. He won Palace’s Young Player of the Year, though, and caught fire the following campaign, impressing in the League Cup giant-killing of Manchester United and winning The Football League’s Young Player of the Year award, having played 48 times, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.

In January 2013, Manchester United agreed to pay £10 million for the winger on the basis that he would return immediately to Palace for the remainder of the season. He scored twice in the Championship play-off semi-final and won the penalty that secured Palace’s spot in the Premier League in the final.

Sadly his opportunities at United were limited and, when given chances, he was unimpressive. After just two appearances at Old Trafford, Zaha was loaned to Cardiff City by David Moyes last season, where he made ten appearances but failed to score.

Zaha was born in the Ivory Coast but moved to South London aged four and opted to play for England. He has played at every International level, including 13 caps and a goal for the England U21s, and debuted for the senior side in a friendly against Sweden in 2012 as an 83rd-minute substitute.

THE PROSPECTS

Zaha’s weekend goal seemed to be a result of the free reign he was given by Warnock after climbing off the bench at St James’ Park – he could have scored a hat trick in his brief 28-minute cameo. While he was officially played in the centre, he terrorised the Toon defence from all angles, managing seven touches and four shots within the penalty area, three of which were on target.

Jason Puncheon was initially preferred on the right but given his personal history with Warnock, his goal and assist in two appearances may be overlooked to give Zaha a starting role on his favoured right side. Another possibility would see Yannick Bolasie dropped and either Puncheon or Zaha fielded on the left – the Frenchman is yet to register a shot on target in three games and had the most attempts in the league without scoring last year. Zaha is also versatile enough to play through the middle, though, and with Marouane Chamakh potentially sidelined for up to a month, he could tuck in behind a lone forward if Warnock opts for a lone forward system.

Yet to register a win, Palace are hardly a horse to back heavily but after netting three times in Warnock’s first match at the helm, there’s a feeling that they may go on the offensive more often this season. The arrival of central midfielder James McArthur from Wigan for a club record £7 million is set to boost their creativity in the centre of the park and while we may not look upon their defence in the same regard as last season under Tony Pulis, there attacking assets may well be worth contemplating.

At 5.4 in FPL, Zaha is cheaper than Puncheon (6.0) and, like Warnock, has plenty to prove in his second stint at Selhurst Park – upcoming home clashes with Burnley and Leicester in the next three look particularly prosperous and certainly offer the youngster the chance to carry on from his impressive St James’ Park showing.

Out of all deadline day transfers, who do people think if the best value for money? (FPL money that is). Hard to look past Hull in my opinion. Ramirez, Ben Arfa and Hernadez are all hard too look past and may be potental bargains.. Particularly Gaston!

Will Blind at 5.5 be a gem for man united? Falcao surly will be a hit if you wanted to upgrade Rooney by 0.5.

Sandro for QPR may even do well at a good price.

What are peoples choices out of deadline day out of everybody that came in?

I wouldn't even consider any 'punts' in midfield right now, as there are a wealth of players doing so well you can't go without.

Well Keith, I'm afraid there's a lot of nonsense in what you've just written. Dembele will never "do well" and Blind will never be "a gem". Falcao for me.

I never said Blind WILL be a gem... I asked WILL he be a gem. Major difference and if it was a question how does that qualify as nonsense? And tell me, where did Dembele come out of? I never mentioned him yet you seem to write like I thought he will do well.

The problem with the cheap mids like Ben arfur is that there is no room for them in our teams. Siggi is so superior that we don't need any other players in that price range.

So really only really cheap ones like Boyd at 4.4 are of interest as bench fodder.

That really only leaves Welbeck and Falcao. Even the southampton defender they bought is kept from investment by Clyne

True but if a person took a chance on three premium forwards and needed to drop an inconsistant 8-9.0 midfielder in their team to do that, is any of them worth investment. Welbeck will be an interesting one but will he be able to score goals? We all know he had somewhat of a phobia of nets the bast couple of seasons

It's worth noting that Alderweireld does have a decent goal threat to him. It's not unthinkable he'll outscore Clyne.

Boyd interests me at 4.4 at Burnley if he's nailed on.
Also, Mane at 7.0 is relatively cheap too!

But the 7-8 price range for midfielders is really a minefield, too much inconsistency there for the price

He'll probably lose some game time once Barkley is fit and lets be honest, he's over-performing at the moment.
It's more a case of being pretty sure that I'm keeping Costa & Sturridge and I won't be able to resist an Arsenal striker for Welbeck's price once he's settled.

One time Ajax played against some amateur team in a summer friendly. We got a penalty and the guys decided to let Blind take it because it would be the only way he'd ever score in an Ajax shirt.

I expect the Falcao naysayers have already mentioned this but there is a stat called NPG90 (non-penalty goals per 90 minutes) that gets a lot of attention.

    Last season NPG90:

    Welbeck - 0.55
    Falcao - 0.45

Nah, not 'facts' in terms of 'who is better'. But it's a layer of info to add to the mix. Also, one needs to bear in mind that Welbeck got quite a bit of super-sub time against tired defenders, which can boost NPG90. Still.

Falcao is better than Rooney in taking Penalties. As a Captain I hope Rooney is smart enough to see it. He did it with RVP (relieving duties) & think he'll do it again with Falcao.

    C) DDG,Jovetic -> Krul,Adebayor (4 point hit)
    D) Jovetic -> Welbeck (FT)

That's a lot of funds if you can get through a week with a "weakened" team..

Maybe do the Jovetic transfer and keep the DDG transfer until after QPR and then maybe take a hit next week to use up some of that 2.6?

The problem is there are so many things I can work with! At the moment, my priority is to remove Jovetic. But the problem is I don't want Pelle/Naismith/Welbeck... I'll consider Welbeck when their fixtures become easier... Hence I'm leaning towards saving

Attack would be Sterling, Sanchez, Feb, Siggy, JWP, Falcao, Bojan, Costa.

It isn't worth selling Rooney for falcao yet IMO, especially for -4. I'd just do Eriksen to sterling if you have the cash. Or else the other two transfers and watch falcao for a game first.

He relies on tight games. A) because of bonus points and B) because the times he scores is usually when they're desperate for a winner or equaliser. I don't see them being free flowing all season, so he should coke good.

It really seems ominous that everyone is selling Rooney. If rvp drops out, Rooney is on penalties and freekicks, with some amazing players around him. He is a player who gets goals and assists so benefits from di maria as well as falcao. And they have QPR at home, arguably the best fixture of the season

    Lovren vs Moreno.

Moreno scored. So what? He had 1 shot, doesn't attack like other fullbacks. Lovren still had a shot and is one of the target man during set pieces.

But the reason I'd rather get Lovren is the bps. He is more of a magnet. Much nicer seeing a defender get 8 points rather than 6.

    1. Zarafa
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 3 months ago

I thought Moreno attacked quite well last game. He was constantly on the overlap and went forward a lot. On Liverpool defensive corners he's at the edge of the box (because of his size) so he's the first to break on counter attacks (almost had a 1v1 with the keeper had Sterling not misplaced his pass). Would say he'd get a few assists over the next few games.

This season the wide backs are getting the bonus points. Lovren shows very little attacking intent, while Moreno is known to be attacking fullback and has already shown why.
With Liverpools. Great fixtures he could well be this seasons coleman

Their average raw BAPS score (not including goals, assists, CSs etc are as follows)

      Moreno - 20
      Lovren - 19.5

As you can see, almost identical. Time will tell if it continues this way.

I put Lovren in my original squad and now I'm playing my WC I'm inclined to keep him for the reasons I chose him in the first place.

But there's a lot of noise about Moreno at the mo. I don't want to be swayed by a single sloppily-defended goal but I did notice his attacking intent. I don't know his history at all so I'd like some info on his style of play at his previous club so that I can ascertain if we can expect plenty of Sunday's fare or not.

By the way I'm putting either Lovren or Moreno in my squad in place of Ivanovic so that I can switch Naismith with Welbeck.

Including players which have short-term injuries, this is how I see the top six teams line up this season.

    1. Manchester City.

(4-4-2): Hart; Zabaleta, Komapany, Mangala, Kolarov; Silva, Fernandinho, Yaya, Navas/Nasri; Aguero, Dzeko.

    2. Liverpool.

(4-4-2): Mignolet; Manquillo, Lovren, Sakho/Skrtel, Moreno; Sterling, Gerrard, Henderson, Markovic; Sturridge, Balotelli.

    3. Chelsea.

(4-2-3-1): Courtois; Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta; Matic, Fabregas; Schurrle, Oscar, Hazard; Costa.

    4. Arsenal.

(4-1-4-1): Szczesny; Debuchy, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs; Arteta/Chambers; Walcott, Ramsey, Ozil, Sanchez; Welbeck.

    5. Everton.

(4-2-3-1): Howard; Coleman, Stones, Jagielka, Baines; McCarthy, Barry; McGeady, Naismith/Eto'o, Mirallas; Lukaku.

    6. Tottenham Hotspur.

(4-2-3-1): Lloris; Walker, Chiriches, Vertonghen, Rose; Stambouli, Paulinho/Bentaleb; Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela; Adebayor.

... and a special mention, Manchester United.

(4-1-2-1-2): de Gea; Rafael, Jones, Rojo, Shaw; Blind; Herrera, di Maria; Rooney; van Persie, Falcao.

Disagree with Liverpool, if you mean 4-4-2 diamond, it's easier to write it as 4-1-2-1-2. As a Liverpool fan, I doubt we will play that formation every game, we will switch between that and a 4-3-3.

On a WC and managed to squeeze this little lot in. I have a feeling Wellbeck is going to be a great points-earner this season with Arsenal.

I cant afford Aguero but worry about his injuries in any case, whilst I also like Sturridge but have Liverpool cover through Sterling and Moreno. Went with Falcao instead.

    Feedback would be appreciated.

    Moreno - Ivanovic - Clyne - Wisdom - Duff
