Having lost striker Shane Long to Southampton earlier this month, Steve Bruce concluded his search for a replacement on a busy transfer deadline day. The Hull boss wrapped up the transfer of Abel Hernandez from Italian side Palermo for a club record fee of around £10 million and, after the 24-year-old signed a three year deal with the Tigers, Bruce immediately talked up the new boy’s prospects:

“Abel is a fantastic signing and highlights just how far the club has come in such a short space of time. He is an exciting talent and, like myself, I’m sure the supporters can’t wait to see him in action.”

The History

Hernandez’ career began in his native country Uruguay, where the centre forward – nicknamed ‘La Joya’ (or ‘The Jewel’) – rose through the ranks at Central Espanyol before being signed by rival side Penarol in the summer of 2008, at the age of 17. His strong performances as a regular starter for the Uruguayan club saw Palermo come calling a half a year later.

During his first season in Italy, Hernandez starred in the Palermo Under-19 squad who secured the famous Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti for youth teams in Serie A and B, and went on to make his first team debut. Across his four and a half seasons with the Sicilian side, Hernandez formed a formidable partnership with compatriot Edinson Cavani and experienced a loss in the final of the Coppa Italia, relegation to Serie B and then promotion back to the top flight last season, notching a total of 33 goals and 11 assists in 100 appearances.

On the international stage, nine goals in 11 appearances for Uruguay’s Under-20 side earned Hernandez his first senior cap in July 2010 at the age of 19, in which he instantaneously announced himself with a goal to earn a 2-0 friendly victory over Angola. A career highlight came in the 2013 Confederations Cup, when the frontman grabbed four goals in his team’s 8-0 group stage victory over Tahiti. In total, ‘La Joya’ has tallied seven goals in 14 international appearances, though he has continually struggled to earn a regular starting role ahead of the world-class talents of Cavani and Luis Suarez.

The Prospects
With a hectic final day of ins and outs now behind him, Bruce has some considerable tinkering to do before his side face West Ham after the international break. The acquisitions of Mohamed Diame, Gaston Ramirez and Hatem Ben Arfa will give the Hull boss plenty to ponder over in the middle of the park, and could result in a very different looking Hull team taking to the field in two weekends’ time from the one that lost out to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Hernandez’s prospects, on the other hand, don’t look so much of a mystery, as the record signing is bound to start alongside Nikica Jelavic in a front two, hence pitting the pair of forwards against each other for our attentions.

The knock-on effect from Hernandez’s arrival does not, however, bode well for a number of others in Hull’s ranks. Tom Ince had, until now, offered an out-of-position differential playing up top with Jelavic, but the young Englishman’s security of starts now look dubious. The 5.5-priced midfielder could drop in behind the front two if Bruce does continue with the 3-4-1-2 formation seen in the first few weeks of the season, though Ramirez, Ben Arfa and Robbie Brady do now offer alternatives in that position.

Hence, with so much uncertainness surrounding Bruce’s midfield, it would seem to leave Hull’s front two as our only viable routes into the Tigers’ attacking set-up for now. Handed a 7.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, Hernandez is a full 1.0 dearer than Jelavic and, bearing in mind the latter also has two goals in his last two appearances to boost his appeal, it would be a leap of faith to splash out for his costlier team-mate right now.

Nonetheless, there’s no denying that the physical presence and goal scoring capabilities of both players as Bruce looks to address a scoring record which saw his side net just 38 times last term. With home fixtures against West Ham and Crystal Palace allied with a trip to Newcastle to come in the next four Gameweeks, the stage is certainly set for Hernandez to plunder the points from the off and perhaps offer Fantasy managers a new ‘Jewel’ in our frontline crowns. In all honesty, though, when the likes of Everton’s in-form Steven Naismith is available for 5.3 and Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck can be snapped up for 6.9, Hernandez has a lot of convincing to do if he’s to become a genuine Fantasy force.

He hasn't looked the part so far. Missed a few chances, not scored in 3 and keeps coming off early for Gomis. He seems to playing as more of a link player than a finisher.

My other question is regarding Fletcher (another failure for me so far)...

He has to score soon, right? But I'm sick of waiting. My only choice is to take a hit and ship him out for either Pelle (decent fixtures) or Naismith (possible rotation risk?).

      Or should I just stick?

Pick which 3 defenders will be starting the most over the next 6-8 weeks , downgrade the other 2 to 4.0s like Wisdom and Duff, save money itb for Naismith to Welbeck in a few weeks ( example)

I'm shocked that after all his years of service, they didn't even give him a testimonial match.

His whistle, combined with Falcao's coolness from the penalty spot would have been a great combination.

Stats don't worry me. He will finish if given the service so LVG's problem remains. With or without Falcao he needs to get the team creating, Falcao is just another fantastic finisher to complete the team off.

Just thinking whether it's worth getting him in yet or spending the spare cash I have on Aguero instead?

That will mean I'm stuck with Naismith long term though who I hopped to offload after the next 2 GW's for maybe Welbeck.

alas, its International week....the time when England is given a stark reminder that all it does is simply stage a great foreign league on home soil and that the only English player to have actually reached his potential over the last decade ( for both club and country) now ply's his trade in Rome.

So seems people rather Balotelli. I like his fixtures and he looked great against Spurs (yes he missed chances but wasn't fully fit).

Is he not a rotation and red card risk though? Seems more punty than the other options

He has an average of 1 red card every 18 games. Do you think he'll be a rotation risk though with L'pool having so many attacking mids?

So I'm torn between Falcao or Aguero.

Obviously Aguero is PL proven but 1.1m more expensive.

After wildcarding my team looks like this

              Krul
              Ivan/Clyne/Chester
              Fabregas/Ramsey/Sterling/Siggy
              Costa/Naismith/(Falcao or Aguero)

              Foster/Wisdom/Wanyama/Taylor

Currently with the money left over I can swap Naismith to Welbeck after Arsenal's more difficult fixture run is over. Man City have 2 big games coming up so debated adding Aguero in GW6 thoughts guys?

If I were you I'd just start with Aguero, the fact that they have 2 big games coming up means he'll likely get game time and City will be rattled after losing to Stoke.. Reaction immenent?

Aguero to for me as you say he's proven and a big game player, also falcao lack of match fitness, wait and see what happens v qpr, you can always downgrade to falcao if he produces straight away

I'm going slightly off the grid with a captaincy choice here with Di Maria. Don't see his name mentioned anywhere or didn't see him in the poll.. If it is the case nobody or very few are picking him and he shines on his second game it would bode well for me! We all know he has the ability and I want to catch him at his best first while everybody else is waiting for him to adapt. Good or bad choice? I also have Falcao as my second united choice but as the second most popular on the page and I would reckon the most popular in the game for the armband in GW4, it will not reap as much benefits as getting Di Maria as captain (if he gets more points than falcao that is)

I thought at Burnley DiM was making clever passes but his team mates weren't reading them. Now he's got new team mates to gel with. Ir reckon he'll come good soon but next GW might be too soon for the armband,

Blind and Falcao are the only two that arrived deadline day and he is in the process of gelling with the rest daily as well since his arrival. Both are extreme professionals and smart on the ball so I'd say he will gel with them two no bother!

Di Maria isn't a great fantasy option though as he operates quite deep and doesn't normally get into goal scoring positions all that much, he's more of a provider.

Didn't he get 18 assists last year which was pretty good? and like 5 or 6 goals. That would leave him in fantasy terms at something like 102 points without picking up the odd point for a clean sheet and bonus points on top of that.. Granted it could be better but I reckon he will be more goal threatening this season.

Yeah, but that was with Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema and Modric playing around him in a team that won the Champions League.

Not a team with RVP, Rooney, Falcao and Mata, who struggled to make the top 6 in the league last year and haven't started any better this year..

Lots of work for Di Maria!

Rooney and Mata have massive numbers transfers out this week while haven’t gone down on price. Last season each player that was transferred out by 30k drop by 0.1mill, a further 60k would mean they would drop by another 0.1mill and a further 90k would total to a 0.3mill drop. If this was last year Rooney would have dropped by 0.3mill! This seems to have all changed. Why is this? Have anyone questioned FFL on this?

Depends on % of ownership, not a certain threshhold of transfers made.

It seems to be because Rooney has over 40% of ownership. This would mean Rooney could required 4/5times as much transfers as say Bojan . Surely not this is not a fair system - because you will have managers jumping from players with high ownership in the comfort that they will not change in price. Which makes fixtures ease more important. I just sent an email to FFL to ask for more information on transfers.

Good luck with that. The price changes are supposed to be a secret and you will almost certainly get a mail back which will let you know just that. And why would anyone take comfort from a player not dropping in price when they've just sold them?

Well it is a game, and we have a right to know the rules of the game are??LOL! Probably comfort was the wrong word, but just highlighting the fact that if for example, Ramsey who has high ownership and I don't have him in my team and I have only 9.1mill in the bank and he just scored two goals last week but arsenal playing Chelsea (away) next week and Burnley (home) the week after. I can now wait unit the week they play Burnley to transfer him in knowing that he wont rise in price. You get what I am saying?

Price rising has nothing to do with the level of ownership though. Only price falls. Every player needs the same NTI to rise in price.

Does NTI stand for 'Number of Transfer In'? I thought that the price rise is the same as price fall. Siggy had 380k transfers in week 2 and raised 0.2, in week 3 300k transfers and raised another 0.2. This week 123k transfers and a rise of 0.1. Costa has 282k transfers this week and only 0.1mil increase. Can we safely say it is 100k transfers to increase 0.1 and 300k to increase 0.2 and 600k to increase 0.3. Or do you think it works different?

We have to use this discussion board/site as a advantage to work it out so we can be a step ahead of other managers in our league.

"Last season each player that was transferred out by 30k drop by 0.1mill"

That's not true, is it? It was based on ownership percentages last season too.

No I kept a very close eye on it last year and it was 30k for a 0.1 drop, 90k for a 0.2 drop and 180k for a 0.3 drop. The two websites I looked at was Total FPL and Fiso and they had it spot on every week. This year they are way out!

I honestly don't believe that's true. Low ownership players needed a lot less than 30k to drop.

Rises have always been a constant threshold regardless of ownership, but not falls.

Falls are supposed to happen after 10% ownership sell-offs, therefore becoming incrementally smaller numbers for falls.

So are you saying that Rooney will have to fall from 40% to 30% ownership to fall in price?

No, saying that he'll have to drop 10% of 40% = 4% ownership (or at least would have had to do so under the old rules), so falling from 40 to 36%.

So it is obviously higher this year. Because Rooney was around 48% ownershiper around week 2 and now he is at 40%.

I feel like TFPL is about 80% accurate (made up number). There are a few players who appear like they are due for a fall/rise, but it doesn't happen. However, for other players on my team and players on my watchlist (Jovetic/Costa/Sterling/Siggy/etc.), they have been moving when TFPL predicted.

Yeah I know it gets some players right but also get some wrong. Like it has Guzan to rise on sunday night and still hasn't happened. I wonder is TFPL actively trying to work out the formula.
