Robin van Persie laughs off suggestions he may require knee surgery. Maroaune Chamakh could be back sooner than expected for Palace, Kyle Walker is set for further time on the sidelines for Spurs, while Peter Odemwingie may be out for the season.

VAN PERSIE DISPELS SURGERY RUMOURS

Robin van Persie has moved quickly to deny reports that had emerged in the last few days suggesting the Dutch international would require surgery on an ongoing knee problem. Speaking yesterday, the Man United forward highlighted the progress he still needs to make after starting the season late, but starkly refuted the suggestion that he would be undergoing surgery in the near future:

“I am impressed that people have the imagination to invent something like that. I do not know where it comes from and can say with my hand on my heart that I’m not in a hospital to have an operation. I had three weeks’ vacation and then had three good weeks of training. Last weekend I played an hour. Still without the desired result, but I’m assuming it will be okay.”

The Scout Says: Van Persie fit. Wayne Rooney fit. Juan Mata fit. Angel Di Maria fit. Radamel Falcao fit. But how do they all fit in? This is the question on all Fantasy managers’ minds right now, but we’ll have to wait until two weekends’ time to find out what Louis van Gaal plans to do with his plethora of attacking talent. A front pairing of Van Persie and Falcao looks the most popular reckoning right now, with Rooney being pushed back behind the front two or into midfield. This scenario would see the Englishman’s potential fall far behind his two team-mates, and guarantee a straight scrap between Van Persie and Falcao for our investment. The former remains the most expensive player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with a 12.5 price tag, with loan signing Falcao entering the game at 11.0, and RVP’s acknowledgement of his own lack of ‘results’ vindicates why 42,000 more managers have acquired the Colombian’s services than the Dutchman’s. Nonetheless, the question of which of United’s Galacticos will rise above his team-mates as the Fantasy asset of choice is a topic that looks set to dominate these parts for a good while yet.

CHAMAKH INJURY FEARS PLAYED DOWN

Reports suggest that the hamstring injury sustained by Crystal Palace’s Marouane Chamakh in his side’s 3-3 draw against Newcastle last weekend will keep the striker out of action for two to three weeks, rather than a month as initial reports suggested.

The Scout Says: With Chamakh’s absence now confirmed for Gameweek 4 and possibly 5, Neil Warnock and Fantasy managers alike will be considering their alternatives. The Moroccan has accrued a goal and assist already this season and had looked one of the stand-out options for the Eagles’ strong run of fixtures in their next four (BUR, eve, LEI, hul) before yesterday’s update. His short spell on the sidelines may allow Frazier Campbell the opportunity to return to the starting line-up alongside Dwight Gayle, though Warnock could instead choose to utilise loan-signing Wilfried Zaha in a central role. The former Eagles’ academy star has already acquired over 10,000 new owners in FPL since his goal-scoring performance for his new side last weekend, and that number could be set to rise significantly if Warnock does indeed signal his intent to use Zaha centrally.

ETO’O ENCOURAGED TO BUILD FITNESS

Roberto Martinez hopes this week’s international break will offer new signing Samuel Eto’o – recently retired from Cameroon’s international side – the chance to focus upon his match sharpness and fitness levels:

“He’s fitted into the dressing room really well so I am really happy to see him have that big impact and we have to work extremely hard to get him up to speed so he can play 90 minutes in every game.”

The Scout Says: Whilst Martinez’ words suggest that Eto’o is likely to be fully up to speed come two Saturday’s time when the Toffees face West Brom, Fantasy managers should remain aware that – thanks to Capital One Cup and Europa League duties – Everton face a daunting seven fixtures in just 22 days from Gameweek 4 onwards, suggesting that rotation may well be on the cards for the majority of their assets. However, Eto’o’s goal against former employers Chelsea last weekend in a 21-minute appearance from the bench highlighted what the 6.0-priced striker is capable of even when not fully fit, and will give managers optimism that he can still produce even if he misses out on a starting spot.

KNEE SURGERY REQUIRED FOR ODEMWINGIE

Stoke City’s Peter Odemwingie may miss the rest of the 2014/15 season with cruciate ligament damage sustained during his side’s surprise victory against Manchester City last Saturday. Mark Hughes confirmed that the winger will be sidelined for the foreseeable future, and highlighted that the loan acquisition of Oussama Assaidi form Liverpool came as a result of this news:

“It’s unfortunate that we look like being without Peter for a while, but following his setback we felt it was important that we moved to bolster the resources at our disposal.”

The Scout Says: Although the Nigerian now seems likely to remain out of action for the majority, if not the whole, of the season, the competition for places on the wings for the Potters remains hotter than ever. Hughes’ move for Assaidi suggests that the likes of Jonathan Walters, Victor Moses or Marko Arnautovic are vying for the roles on the flanks for his side, and Fantasy managers looking to take advantage of Stoke’s superb upcoming schedule (LEI, qpr, NEW, sun, SWA) are advised to focus their attentions on the Potters’ back-line or last weekend’s goal-scoring hero Mame Biram Diouf until Hughes’ plan with his midfield options becomes clearer. Bojan Krkic’s pitch time continues to look questionable as a result of Hughes’ shopping spree.

WALKER GOES UNDER THE KNIFE

Having been missing for his side since pre-season, Tottenham right back Kyle Walker has undergone lower abdominal surgery. No news has emerged yet regarding how long he will remain out of action.

The Scout Says: Going into the new season, Walker’s 6.0 price tag made him the most expensive Spurs defender along with Jan Vertonghen, with the full-back’s raids down the right flank having proved prosperous in previous years. A lengthy absence looks likely, however, ensuring that Walker’s season won’t be getting underway anytime soon. In stark contrast, Eric Dier’s campaign has got off to a flying start with two goals in three appearances for the summer signing from Sporting Lisbon, and his starting role in Mauricio Pochettino’s side now appears set to continue for the near future, though Kyle Naughton does offer an alternative. Spurs face Sunderland, West Brom and Southampton in the next four Gameweeks, and the north London outfit will be hopeful of adding to the two clean sheet sheets they have already recorded this season in that run of fixtures.

Rooney as captain is nailed on I think - but not necessarily up front. Can see him taking the Mata role and Mata benched for some matches. I think RVP and Falcao if fit will start most matches, especially with no Europe.

Blind looks nailed on either in def, mid or wing back - all areas where they are lacking. He'll likley be an OOP though.

Jones and Rojo are surely nailed on as is De Gea. LVG likes Evans too - not sure why, but he does.

Wingbacks is still an area where they lack players though so oddly there is every chance one of Valencia and Young will start most matches.

Di Maria looks nailed but if the Burnley match is anything to go by in an assister of the assister role in midfield.

I'm not so sure. LVG didn't sign him and has already publicly criticised him for being fat and lazy. I see Shaw being eased in perhaps but not straight in.

              Exactly.

I wouldn't want Young as my wingback for any longer than was completely necessary.

But he authorised the signing, said he liked them. He got super defensive of Shaw when Hodgson tried to criticise him. I think it was a case of making sure Shaw's ego was kept in check after they paid him so much. Reminding him who's boss.

He said he was "not fit enough". Hardly equates to lazy.

Playing a wingback in a 3-5-2, how many people (including other prem players) are "fit enough" for that role...very few, it's very demanding.

I think the fact that he was on such hard training in preparation for a wing-back role is indicative of the fact that it was his spot to lose.

I couldn't begin to put a team in with any confidence it would be right. Amazing that everyone seems to think that all the new signings across the league will sparkle and adapt to the Premiership in no time at all.
When what we know from history is that some never adapt apart from straight away.

The fact that this has been discussed on here so much even while United are out of form by so much and providing very little fantasy-value at the moment.. I think there are more pressing issues for us to worry about than United's formation, personally..

I'm not saying I have more pressing issues, I'm just getting tired of this one particular issue because United's formation has been one of the most discussed topics over the last few weeks and it's all still guesswork so I'm not sure what all the talk of it really accomplishes.. Sorry, I don't mean to sound spoilt, I'm just saying 🙂

I have no idea who Van Gaal will pick as his first 11.

      De Gea;

      Rafael, Jones, Rojo, Shaw;

      Blind; Herrera,

      Rooney, Mata, Di Maria;

      Falcao

Hopefully it will be something like this, with RVP and Falcao rotating. Mata could be dropped and RVP could be pushed up front with Falcao. Seems very likely Rooney will be operating wider and deeper however.

As posted earlier...Why touches in the box matters for mids and defenders...it just does...I'm not saying all your picks should be from that stat but certainly one from each position would be a good idea...

It seems a considerable amount now have the template midfield of Ramsey, Siggy, Sterling and Fabregas (or Hazard).

I'm a bit disappointed how the price changes have worked so far this year. For example, many of us here owned Siggy from the start which still made him a differential in comparison to the c.3m odd in the game. I think he had an ownership of about 6% in GW1. Perhaps this is due to his explosive start vs Utd that all the casuals then went for him, but now as we reach just the 4th gameweek he is owned by almost 40% yet has only risen .5m. I heard this is because every 0.1m a player increases, they need an even higher amount of transfers in to rise again in the same GW before it resets before the next round.

I'm comparing this in context of Ramsey last season, when he started doing well but by the time he reached 40% ownership his price had already increased by about 2-2.5m. Then again, he was a player who many did not expect to maintain his form and did not perform well right at the start.

This is a long game and 3 weeks is nothing, there are plenty of testing times ahead. But it seems that when I look at the ownership % levels in my team, my differentials come down to a couple of defenders and the 5th midfielder (as I'm using 3-5-2).

I'm glad the transfer window has shaken things up a bit, as it should sway people to take a few risks and break away from the status quo. Personally I would have liked the price change system to be more dynamic so players such as Siggy would have reached 7m by now due to his high ownership, which could actually help those who are on the train receive some profit before it gets going.

tl;dr: I'm disappointed some of my starting players are highly owned but still low priced.

Gw1 high performers always get slotted into early wc's hence the huge increase in popularity without the big price rises.

I see your point. But Michu, for example, did well from the start a couple of seasons ago, and his price rose rapidly.. Surely the early WC's come out every season.

I agree, I don't know why they have made the changes to it.You need that flex in the pricing for hot players - otherwise it doesn't matter when you move for them. I remember last season early on toying with getting in Lampard or Yaya - I went the wrong way and paid for it. This year I could have easily rectified that error and it wouldn't make much difference

New system removes some of the flair from the game in my view, and also means you have to protect your team value more carefully (ie avoid price drops where possible.)

Just my point - I think I went with Lampard as well! What a mistake that was. But with the current system, I'd have been able to bring Yaya in early on without much trouble.

It makes it much harder to find differentials as well. I think the interesting point will come closer to Christmas when players such as Walcott return and start firing. At the moment it is just too easy to hop off one player and hop onto another.

I think it has to do with a slower increase. Ramsey steadily increased every week, whereas everyone rushed for Siggy who could only go up a max 0.3 every week. Not everybody thougth Ramsey could keep it up and were reluctant to get him. Whereas this year, everyone is seeing Siggy as this years Ramsey and getting him in fast.

You're right, not everyone did. Although even in that case, with everyone getting Siggy he should have reached about 6.8m by now! Forgot to mention it does work both ways, though. If I see a player performing well who I didn't have at the start, I'd be very grateful if they'd only increased 0.1 - 0.3m!

haha thats true too. Yeah there must be something else slowing it down too. I would've expected more from Siggy too at this stage. Serious points each week so far.

Even under the old system Siggy would only be 6.7m by now. Ramsey's increased from 5.5m to 7.6m from 60% ownership btw as well.

      1. A Wild Lurker Appeared
        • 11 Years

Of course, as each player can only increase a certain amount. Maybe 6.8m if we're being generous! I know what you're saying though. It seems a better system would be one where the price rises are similar to last season, but transfers out do not negatively impact players as much as they do now. This would reward those who 'stick' with their key players, for example Mata may reach 8.7m by the next GW, which puts a lot of pressure on his owners to switch.

          • 12 Years

Yes I agree. It seems as if this price system does support a template because there are so many fallers and so few risers. This leads people to jump on the relatively few risers and avoid all the very many players that might be falling in fear of losing value, thus creating a template.

What I don't really like about the new pricing system isn't really the rate of rising/falling, but rather the quantity of rising/falling.

Are there too many fallers, or too few? (Only because people have complained Rooney hasn't fallen yet, but also that falling is too easy.)

I have to say that I dislike the new pricing system very much!
The prices should go up faster so the ones to move first will get higher rewards with risk early transfers have.
      Others should be priced out!

you're using a very small sample of 3 weeks. there's plenty of room still to be creative and pick a couple of unique players with favourable fixtures. not all is lost…how boring would it be if everyone had the same team

Of course, thats why I added that 3 weeks is nothing and that the transfer window will mix things up a bit. But as GR3G mentioned above, prices should rise faster to enable those who act quickly to reap the benefits. I'm just viewing this in terms of ownership levels vs price rises.

Surely the skill to this game should be picking the best talent on form and fixtures. Not being able to build a better team value to everyone else by knowing when players are rising or falling. I prefer the new system.

its hard to say whats best tbh. I thought that having mines at the end of last season wasnt really of much benefit as people had plenty notice ahead of the double g/w's so had time to plan properly negating any of the benefits of still having mines to play. I thought the early w/c players seemed to benefit last year

When it becomes clearer how this season really is unfolding. ie who are the players and from which teams to have. This is never clear at this point. As AB says above. A lot are being played to turn 8/10 into 10/10 (or at least perceived that way) teams. In a few weeks time things could be very very different.

The longer you can hold on to it the better IMO.

You can use the Winter Wildcard to freshen up your team, then, depending on how things turn out (e.g. DGW, injuries etc) you can then use the Wildcard.

As a last gasp scenario, and even if there were no DGWs or they were all over and done with, you could use it in GW37 or GW38 to make last-minute wholesale changes becoz by that time, several teams wouldn't have anything to play for anymore, and there would be those still fighting for the title/European places/relegation, thus you would expect those teams to field their strongest 11 who would theoretically play hard, perhaps against opposition who couldn't care less one way or another.

Or, come GW38 and you have nothing better to do, use the WC to change all your players to names starting 'B' or 'S' 🙂

I certainly believe that Game Weeks 37 and 38 are way too late for a wildcard, unless you're already doing so well that you can afford to retain for that long. A wildcard should be used to set the scene for several game weeks at minimum, or perhaps to maximise returns for a cazy DGW.

I don't mind the idea of a late WC, but probably somewhere between GW30-35. Will give you a good run to finish the season strong with a new team.

best time to play is when you need it the most. some DGWs are easy to handle with freebies and hits, no WC needed. then all of a sudden 3 of your players get injured and one in suspension while others are just crap and new bandwagond emerge.

I think the chances of Rooney goal assist combination in the next match are quite high. Especially with all the transfers out, it's the way it goes. I'm hoping to buy him back at 10.3 on my wildcard on Saturday morning. Sell sell sell!

    Falc ... oh

More Falcao naysaying. This is intended as an assessment of Falcao's contribution to the team as a whole, not just goal-scoring (short answer: been declining markedly over the last three years). But it's still very relevant to Fantasy point-scoring. And it's written by a United fan, before anyone thinks "bitter ABU" 😉

    http://thebubblegame.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/falca-oh/

Note the second bar chart, a list of European players ranked by NPGA90 (non-penalty goals and assists). Can't really argue with the top 10, which lends plenty of weight to this being a valid way to assess players.

Very, very much. From what I'm reading, he has to reverse a three year decline and deliver his best season ever to justify his pricetag. Especially if he doesn't get given penalties.

On my WC & need a differential against my rival who's leading me by 40 points. It seems he's sticking with Rooney so I'm kind of desperate. Tough decision.

We've only had 3 Gameweeks, there are 35 left. I made up 90 points over three Gameweeks last season.

You don't need differentials. Play your own game.

But for what it's worth, Rooney's stats aren't great. I have an abysmal history with punts, so this is probably less than useless but I'm having a crack at Balotelli. Amazing fixtures and he seems to have fixed Liverpool's attacking malaise.

Didn't Ramsey blank too in the first 3 GWs or so?
GW 4 was Ramsey's first real burst to fantasy radar and it will be the same case for Bojan too.

Many people would laugh at you for getting Ramsey in last year's presesason
          Both blanked in the beginning
Both are male and play football
Both have between 5-6 letters in their name.
Both plays for a very attacking team with world-class supplies.

Need some advice on what to do with Dier please. Who could I bring in for him? I'm 0.1 short of doing Rooney>Costa and I really want Costa in my team.

Green -> Bego is not a good move, Stoke were horrible before the City match, they might revert back to that, give them another game to see if that was a freak result or a corner turned.

I like Krul mainly for his fixtures and price.

I'm the other way and am shipping out Krul for Beggers.

For me Toon have conceded 5 already. Stoke were a bit slow to start but have only conceded 2 and looked tight against Citeh. Their upcoming fixtures are far better than Toon's and I think the momentum is with Beggers over Krul, enough to invest an extra 0.5m.

But Begovic also conceded at home to Villa and away to 10-man Hull and looked like a joke of a team in those two matches... They jsut turned it on against City, and if they continue in that vein then he's a good buy, but if not, then he's overpriced, I'd just give it a week personally but you don't have to obviously 😛

Yeh, I'm doing it on a WC. If I'm wrong I can downgrade back to Krul or to Mannone.

If I'm on Krul and he's poor I'm stuck or have to take a hit.

what are your opinions on Tom Lawrence to Leicester?

I am looking for a 4.5 FW to fill in possible injuries in my team (I will be playing 3-5-2 mainly)

Not a FPL prospect really, especially considering Leicester already have Ulloa firing.

thanks. Who would you advise then as a 3rd 4,5 striker? Anichebe? Vaz te?

For me, no one at that price; only Zamora and maybe Vaz Te will see any pitch time. For any chance of points you can't go below 5.3 (Naismith).

There is no good 4.5, simple as, choosing any 4.5 is throwing him away essentially. 4.5 forwards are a big waste, you only have 3 striker spots, and they're precious. I'd advise you get a 4.5 mid, or go cheap on your defence slightly more, 4.5 forwards are not the way to go. However if your heart is set on one, Vaz Te. Anichebe is 5.0 anyway.

The only Lawrence that I have in mind now, is the girl from the Hunger game.

She is more fantasy prospect than Tom Lawrence could ever be.

    Nicely done! 😆

    Begovic (Gilks)
Debuchy - Dier - Clyne (PVA - Kelly)
Ramsey - Sterling - Eriksen - Siggy (Marney)
    Costa - Rooney - Jovetic

    1FT, 1.8 in bank

First transfer priority? Rooney? Eriksen? Debuchy?
