Southampton completed their summer of restructuring on deadline day by bringing in electric winger Saido Mane for £10 million – their ninth signing of the summer. The highly-rated 22-year-old rolls up to St Mary’s from Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg on a four-year deal and, upon his arrival, Saints boss Ronald Koeman reckoned he has a real talent on his hands:

“Last season Ajax played against Salzburg in Europe, and I saw him playing and was impressed with his qualities and with the physicality that he showed. He can play in different positions in the attack – he can play on the left or right side and also as a number nine. It is incredible how many goals he has scored from his position, and I hope that he will do the same for us. With the way that we play and the fact that I know him very well, this is a good step forward for him.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Senegal, Mane began his career at French side Metz, where, as a 19-year-old, he made 22 appearances in his first and only season, scoring twice.

Purchased by Red Bull Salzburg in 2012 for around €4 million – the third largest transfer fee Metz have ever received – it’s fair to say Mane was a huge success in Austria. Mainly fielded on the left flank, his blistering pace, strength and expert finishing served up an eye-catching 45 goals and 32 assists in just 87 appearances across all competitions, with 13 goals and 13 assists in 33 league matches last year indicative of his burgeoning form.

His disciplinary record could certainly be improved upon, though – 18 yellows and four dismissals over his time in Salzburg highlights his propensity for incurring the referee’s wrath.

THE PROSPECTS

After a summer of transition that saw the club change manager and lose a number of last season’s star players, there’s a feeling that the Saints are none-the-worse after Ronald Koeman drafted in a host of new faces. The reinforcements, allied with the club’s ability to retain key assets such as Morgan Schneiderlin, bode well for the St Mary’s club and Mane is the final piece in an intriguing attacking puzzle that comprises entirely of new faces.

The Senegal winger’s ability to cut inside from the left onto his favoured right foot could potentially allow Koeman to restructure his formation for the season ahead. So far, Dusan Tadic has been fielded on the left of a three-man frontline in the opening trio of fixtures but may be moved into the centre behind Graziano Pelle in a 4-2-3-1, allowing fellow new boy Shane Long a spot on the right.

Such a system would certainly harm the chances of James Ward-Prowse’s pitch time, though the youngster could yet retain a starting berth if Koeman opts for a 4-3-3, with Mane and Tadic potentially handed the roles on either side of Pelle. Despite the considerable outlay on Long, it’s fair to say that – aside from a standout season for Reading in 2010/11 – he’s struggled for consistency in and around the box and, while his work-rate is to be admired, he certainly lacks the burning acceleration and eye for goal of the Saints’ latest signing.

At 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League, Mane comes in cheaper than Tadic (7.5) and is immediately handed a very kind run of fixtures to ease his transition into the Premier League. Koeman’s side were a little slow in finding their form but will be confident of building on the back of last week’s 3-1 win over West Ham – four favourable home encounters (NEW, QPR, SUN, STO) are allied with a trip to Swansea in the next six Gameweeks alone.

Granted, it may take a while for him to acclimatise to a far more physical environment but if Mane can replicate a fraction of the form that terrorised backlines in the Austrian top-flight, Koeman’s latest signing could be a serious mid-price contender for our five-man midfields.

        Will start with cons:

        - Possible whole process of applying for EU all over again meaning waste expenses
        - No British pound anymore. Bank of England doesn't allows it and chaos arrives

        Pro:
        - Its better to be out of EU atm
        - A lot of revenue from the oil

Pros - a good place for disgruntled englanders to live.

The economy will be a mess, the pound will fall in value and there will be haggling over who keeps the scottish companies. London wants them already.

Yes, I'm not sure about oil being so good. A country needs a diversified economy to weather out any downturns. Venezuala for example have struggled

Definitely need a balanced economy...although watching all the oil revenue disappear into the City of London whilst Scotland was plunged into continued recession in the 80's was damned near criminal...Theft...

It is very simple. Independence means NO independence.

The only way of retaking the initiative from the huge corporations is supra nationalism.

      Price drop bargains

Given the break I was having a look down the list of players who have dropped in price in the first three weeks to see whether there are any potential bargains, harder to back up with stats this but it certainly seems there are some players in the various categories who might warrant a closer look either shortly or over the course of the season. This can come in really helpful if, like me, you made a mistake initially with someone like Ashley Young. I saw one RMT the other day deliberately picking a 4.4m mid who wasn't playing to squeeze in the budget.

Some thoughts on the various categories but also very interested in other people's views:

      Proven but long-term injury
This category includes players like Benteke and Jay Rodriguez who have dropped 0.1 and Snodgrass and Barkley who had dropped 0.2. Proven fantasy performers they could all come into the reckoning when they return from injury and like Suarez at 10.9 (ok not exactly like that) there will be financial rewards for early adopters as well as points if they hit the ground running.

      Goalkeepers
Looking at this list there is no interest for us at all really unless we see injuries as all the dropping keepers are second choices.
If we did see injuries, or a sudden change of heart from a manager then some of these would come into play. Certainly Ospina at £4.9m would be great value if Szczesny did get injured and Vorm too at £4.9m (subject to Ben Davies below). No immediate interest though.

      Defenders
Some interest here at the top end. Luis has dropped to £5.7m and while we all know Jose tends to stick with his defence they haven't looked impregnable so far and he is surely going to get a look in at some point in the season. When he does, an attacking fullback in that team for approaching £5.5m will be a very interesting proposition - he could be £1.8m cheaper than Ivan.
Luke Shaw is not quite as attractive to me. He seems to have a lot of issues and is not yet proven a a great attacking fullback and who knows whether 3-5-2 will still be in operation at that time. Even if it is Shaw just doesn't have the proven ability to score attacking points when there are plenty of cheaper options in what is, let's face it, not a very attractive defence, especially as eventually the fixtures take a turn for the worse around GW9.
Ben Davies is probably the most interesting option in defence for me. Dropped to £4.8m he is an 8-figure attacking fullback in what is probably a top 6 team who will keep plenty of clean sheets against the bottom half. I really don't think Rose will hold onto that spot forever and we will likely see a switch with Rose shifting to the Thursday night XI.
Leighton Baines: Very nice to see him drop. GW8 starts a pretty good run of fixtures and his attacking stats are already excellent with the returns not yet flowing. He was a good option at £7.5m last year and remains a good option and the little price drop is a nice bonus and I can see him coming in if I am forced to wield the WC before Christmas.
Otherwise we have players like Sakho, Rafael, Smalling etc who aren't particularly great options, even with their price drop.
At the non-premium end Santon's drop will be nice when he returns from injury as he is a nailed starter who has a track record of some attacking returns.
Huth and Caulker have also both dropped for different reasons and both have serious attacking track records. The former isn't playing but if he gets his place back a Stoke defender who scores goals for £4.9m would be very tempting. Caulker is a lot like last year - in an awful defence but with attacking threat. A difficult option but worth monitoring if last week's clean sheet doesn't look like a one off.
We are also yet to find that holy grail of a £3.9m starter.

      Midfielders
There are a few options at the top end, Willian, Coutinho and Navas really aren't attractive even at 0.2m cheaper than their starting price. If we see a change in PL lineups when the Champions League kicks in it might be worth revisiting.
Gerrard, Lallana, Sanchez and Yaya have all been shunned by the community for various reasons. For the latter two their price tag means we'd need to see a serious change in form and/or something more considerable than a 0.1m price drop to be interested.
Mata took what is surely the most talked about 0.1 price drop in FPL history. There have also been perhaps more prospective United XIs posted than has been strictly necessary in the past week but clearly there will be a 'we will score one more than you' approach but the uncertainty over how that will pan out probably makes him a 'hold' but not a 'buy'.
The big gambles such as community favourites HBA and Arnautovic at £5.8m are both particularly attractive in the light of the switch to Newcastle and the injury to Peter Odemwingie respectively.
Further down the list Mirallas might just be one of the most annoying FPL players to own in recent history but like Baines the turn in the schedule could make him tempting from GW8 and the price drop only serves to accentuate that.
Zaha is also clearly an excellent option with his move.

      Forwards
Very slim pickings here. Welbeck has been covered in great deal and Rodriguez maybe as mentioned above.
The only other two are really Long and Zarate, both of him still have a feel of being a bit too expensive for uncertain returns.

Good post. Reminds me of Wakey's Falling Stars bulletins.

Isla has now dropped to 4.9m as well, not that anyone would pick him over Caulker. But he would offer a straight-swap alternative in the event of injury I suppose.

I did wonder about Isla in the 3-5-2 but Caulker's attacking touches are extraordinary and surely goals will come. I did recall Wakey's posts as I was writing - didn't mention Sessegnon though!

Can't have all the strikers unfortunately. I have Falcao instead of Rooney, who I wouldn't want at the moment anyway. Falcao to Aguero with an adjustment elsewhere is something I'm thinking of a few weeks down the line.

I'd want Kun for the weekend. Wish I had the balls to go with Falcao right now but I'm just not sure he'll come in straight away. Welbeck would allow you to upgrade Chadli, which you'll want to do pretty soon I think.

I'm a bit undecided on the Kun/Falcao situation at the moment. I could turn Chadli into Zaha, knock .1 off Hutton and hope for .2 WC profit through Fab/Nasmith/Dyer and get Kun instead of Falcao. Think Chadli could be a good option, was more advanced than Adebayor in the last game.

Early striker punts, love it! I've rushed Falcao in too. And I'd be disappointed if you didn't have your grav.

Bench looks appalling but it's meant to, isn't it? Good team.

Yours is crazy expensive though 😀

Southampton have amazing fixtures. It will also be an easy decision to sell them when the fixtures go bad because they go REALLY bad.

It's kind of a tactic ha. I'd spend too much up top otherwise, and avoid good value mids and strikers. I deliberately impoverished myself!

The starting defence I have can play every game until GW13 when a Saints clear out will occur. Hutton, because of the crap fixtures, will actually be useful when it comes to the time that I'll need him around November/December.

Turns out that Boyd has WHM and NEW the weeks Chadli has mci and che so he could actually be useful 🙂

Ah nice, it's all in the details. My defensive rotation goes to pot in GW8 so that's when I'll be wildcarding. In the meantime, my bench plebs will have their part to play too.

They probably will. Somewhat hopeful thinking from me no doubt. But then Fabregas in the double pivot may be worth the cost of a goal or two for Mourinho as he'll no doubt pull the strings from there.

Reading all the above Mila - I'd still hesitate on tripling up.
There are other good fixture runs...consider LIV or NEW ?

I'd personally hedge to 2 SOT....and have someone else as the third.
It's a shed-load of transfers you are committed to to clear them out when the fixtures turn south.
Any other injuries to your big hitters will leave you possibly carrying more dead wood than you'd like and burning extra transfers...without a WC in hand.

Very nice side apart from that though, mate - and fortune favours the brave - so it could work brilliantly & I could be talking out of my proverbial 😉

Cheers Gaucho, having Moreno instead of Bertrand was my original plan but I think I'm going to fall just short on the WC profit because of that Dier injury. Annoying but I quite like the thrill o a defensive triple up 🙂

Barring injuries, I'm happy to not make any defensive transfers until GW13 so I'm aiming to get up to 2 FT in advance of that. GW13 I'd then sell Forster and Bertrand to Green and Caulker who, from that point, have 5 excellent home games in 8 and then sell Clyne in GW14. There could easily end up being a hit in there but I think the triple Saints could pay very well.

So you have 9 guys trying to get themselves/each other into space open to receive a pass.

Ten guys trying to stop them and ultimately take out the quarterback.

And a quarterback spoting a pass and throwing before being taken out.

Now to work out the basic moves.

As usual there are two wide guys, and there appears to be five in the middle that seems to have accepted their fate and just hug each other.

          Gink,

Try to just watch the offensive line (fat boys in the middle on the quarterback's team).

If you can tell whether it'll be a run or a pass just by watching what those guys do as soon as the ball is snapped - you'll be starting to get a good grip on the tactics.

What I really like is how their a big value in regard to the quality of life over there and their ticket prices for games represents this. Many german clubs do a lot of gestures for their fans that most English clubs would never do sadly.

Sturridge is def out for a couple weeks at least. You don't tweet you're heartbroken for an injury that keeps your out a few days.

Most full grown men wouldn't tweet that they were heartbroken even if they were dead.
